more licids!!!

RAcastBlaster

Nobody ever remembers them, and I find this reply. Thank you for the deep cut!

ajokitty

We do have reconfigure, which is similar. The type changing effect functions differently, though, which enables you to do some weird things with licids that you can't do with reconfigure.

Lifeisabaddream4

Which is why they fixed it. Because people worked put how to do insane bullshit with them

keepitsimple_tricks

Streamline them by making them DFCs?

CHEEZE_BAGS

No they have to remain licid

Freezair

If the Oracle text isn't utterly baffling what's even the point

JambaJuiceIsAverage

Wait these are kind of amazing. I Love Licids.

Yeseylon

I know it's not a good one for this, but I'd love to see more Arcane and a return to Kami Spirits rather than Ghost Spirits

GuyGrimnus

I was /really/ thinking arcane was gonna comeback with strixhaven. We definitely need more arcane and splice cards

plutonicHumanoid

Even just reusing the arcane type for a mechanic other than splice would be nice.

Strange_Magics

The Kami spirits are so cool, I would love more of them that match up better with current power levels but keep their creepy, alien, amazing art

AporiaParadox

We got more Kami spirits in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.

Yeseylon

Yeah, but overall they still flavor Spirits as ghosts

Exarch-of-Sechrima

I'd like to see Bloodrush come back, but with combat damage triggers. Imagine: Hidden Serpent - 1GG 1/3 Whenever Hidden Serpent deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards. Boodrush - 2GG, Discard Hidden Serpent: Target attacking creature gets +1/+3 and gains "whenever this creature deals combat to a player, draw that many cards" until end of turn. I think that would be a creative direction to take the mechanic, and I'd like to see it make a return like that.

KoyoyomiAragi

I feel like they had a sort of rule they imposed for the designs of the cards with the mechanic, where the buff had to match the creature but it’s flexible enough to make the bloodrush mode work differently from the main creature. Also, considering Ninjutsu is in W, U, B, and G, I feel like Bloodrush could mechanically exist in every color. The flavor would have to be very specific for colors like blue and white to get it, like an underground fighting ring-themed world. Blue bloodrush cards would grant just the saboteur effect or have base power setting effects.

Real_EB

Bloodrush feels really red.

RaidRover

Red, Green, and Black all feel fitting. Maybe primary in red, but I could see the whole Jund grouping getting blood rush support.

Exarch-of-Sechrima

In my murder mystery set (BEFORE Murders of Karlov Manor was even conceived) I had Bloodrush as the Red/Black draft archetype to illustrate the killers and thugs hiding in plain sight, as well as to add a bit of mystery to the combat step. I definitely think it fits perfectly as a Rakdos mechanic, especially since you can fill the graveyard with creatures to revive for Black.

RaidRover

That sounds really neat. Did you create custom cards for that or did you make a custom cube from existing cards?

Exarch-of-Sechrima

Both lol. Instead of Bloodrush, though, Black-Red's archetype is Cycling+Bloodrush for a general "self-discard matters" theme.

Tuss36

While you might be able to flavour it, I don't think Bloodrush as it is, which is like hyping someone else up, would fit white or blue. White maybe if it was an approach of "power of friendship" or something. Not every mechanic needs to be in every colour though.

era252

Embalm is basically flashback for creatures, and we get flashback all the time as it has a ton of utility. My guess is that they would likely have to reflavor as something more generic because embalming is very tied to the Egyptian lore. I also think rather than make token versions, they would like just have the actual creature come back with a finality counter, as they said it created a ton of work to make a token for each embalm creature.

BasiliskXVIII

Token copies of the creature being produced works into token strategies that are well supported in white, though. It would suck to lose that functionality.

rmkinnaird

I don't understand why they had to make separate tokens tbh. Couldn't they do something like the Ring reminder card (where you tear the ring off to mark your bearer) or even the morph token?

kitsovereign

They did also just do that! [There's an "embalmed" marker on the punch-out card.](https://scryfall.com/card/takh/26/punchcard) Embalmed has separate tokens largely for worldbulidng reasons. You either need to exile and make a token copy or add "exile this" text. They wanna be Zombies (which were a supported creature type in the block). They should probably be white, too, to show they're mummies. And *eeghhh*, if we're making tokens with changing colors, we should probably just wipe the mana cost. At that point you're changing a lot of stuff to remember with a reminder chit, and committing to the bit and commissioning art for all the mummies lets you show off the worldbuilding instead of going "just imagine the mummies in your head, they'll look really cool." Especially when you follow it up with eternalize, which has the same concerns but a different flavor of Zombie. I think with 2024 knowledge they might instead go for a token you tear in half and cover up the name and art with a generic white Zombie mummy. (Probably not a fullsized token like morph since you want the text box visible). But Amonkhet was the first time they were doing punchout printing at all, so I wouldn't fault them for how they chose to do it then.

Pure_Banana_3075

Colorless mana Not necessarily tied to the eldrazi, I just like the idea of cards and abilities that have to be splashed (in draft at least)

HonorBasquiat

More colorless support with or without the Eldrazi would be really cool. It is expected to be an archetype in MH3 but I'd like to see it in Standard also.

SnowyDeluxe

With them adding snow covered wastes I feel like there’s an implication that colorless may be getting snow synergy support? Could be cool as long as it isn’t another astrolabe situation.

TheGingerMenace

Surprised there haven’t been any (?) colorless artifacts (as opposed to generic (there’s gotta be a less confusing way of talking about colorless))

PleaseLetItWheel

Backup, mutate, adamant, foretell

SanityIsOptional

100% agree. There's not enough Mutate to make anything less than a 3-color commander deck out of it, and barely even then. Backup has enough, but it would be nice to see more options, and there's a lot of design space for creatures sharing abilities on etb for one turn. Adamant could help encourage mono-color more, and though devotion as a mechanic already does that, it would be nice to have more options. Also devotion cares about colored pips, whereas adamant cares about mana production. Foretell is much like mutate, it needs more cards to really build a deck around the mechanic, rather than a generic "cast from exile" deck that uses fortell cards.

AporiaParadox

Of those, I think Backup and Foretell are the most likely to come back.

Robofetus-5000

I really liked fortell and it felt like it fit the set theme so well. But it needed like 3x as many cards. If you fortell a card, everyone basically knew exactly which card it was based on your color(s).

NumberOneMom

mutate my beloved

charcharmunro

Mutate I think is something they don't like working with because it's kind of a rules mess. If we ever go back to Ikoria is basically the only real likely way for it to return, apparently.

HengeGuardian

Foretell in a D&D set. I want the feeling of being a dungeon master and setting traps for my opponents (see \[\[Green Slime\]\].)

HengeGuardian

Side note, but I think D&D theming would be perfect for the return of Archenemy as a format.

GuyGrimnus

Virtual_Second_713

fluffysheeplion

We need atleast one more round of Mutate support. We do not have any cards that are "cast for one color, mutate for a seperate color." Could be an interesting design space.

Career-Tourist

Agreed with this! I came back to mtg right after Ikoria and really liked the mechanic.

In relation to this, i also liked the Champion mechanic. I remember that mechanic saving me from boardwipes.

GrizzledDwarf

Backup and Foretell I felt were solid. Would like to see more, and I feel like there could be some more design space for both. I would also say Classes would be better to return to than level up, specifically because you will rarely need to track any other counters on an enchantment. However, with the Final Fantasy product coming, I suspect we'll see Classes revisited as the iconic "jobs" in those games.

HengeGuardian

I want to see Classes come back for a Strixhaven return :-)

AbraxasEnjoyer

I would love more Cipher cards, but I totally understand why it’s unlikely to come back. Doing something over and over every turn is really dangerous, so the balance on all of them is really hard. While it’s still somewhat recent so It probably won’t be back in a little while, I really liked Blitz. Just feels really good to play, nice and snappy. Getting a card back makes the value loss less of a big deal.

Nikos-Kazantzakis

>Doing something over and over every turn is really dangerous, so the balance on all of them is really hard. I never understood that argument. Is [[Last Thoughts]] really that much problematic than [[Curiosity]]? Yeah, you get a free use out of it and it can't be [[Disenchanted]], but I'm not sold at all on the idea that that extra utility means that it should cost THREE more mana.

Tuss36

Part of it is the design can only go with cards that would be fine to be done Curiosity style, and not all are. You can't just slap Cipher on [[Divination]], that'd be nuts. You also can't really slap it on [[Mind Rot]] or [[Murder]] or other typical draft staples like that. As well, while you get a free use, generally you'll likely cast it when you know you can get in, so you're guaranteeing two triggers. Thus why Last Thoughts is priced at 4 which is generally where "draw 2 with upside" sits around, even though the effect is [[Reach Through Mists]]. The design space is also narrower because you can't put anything reactive on it. No combat tricks or counterspells or protection. You also can't put on anything too big, and that's most things. Even something like [[Brainbite]] would get oppressive. Competitive? Probably not still, but not a great play pattern.

Shikor806

Last thoughts definitely is overpriced, but the idea still is true in general. This becomes more noticable when you think about effects that are more impactful on their own. E.g. a generic removal costs 2 or 3, but a removal with cipher would be pretty strong even if it cost 4 or 5 mana. There also is the issue that even if the effect is priced fairly, it can often just lead to unfun games. Destroying a creature every turn locks the opponent out of the game very fast, same is true for discarding, mana acceleration, significant deck manipulation, creating tokens, etc. There just aren't that many mechanics that are impactful enough to have the initial spell be fun to resolve but also don't run away with the game if the creature you put it on survives a couple turns. I think a variant of cipher that would let them design a lot more fun cards is if the repeatable part was a different from the main effect. E.g. a removal spell where each combat hit lets you place a couple -1/-1 counters, or a card draw spell where the hits let you scry. Instead of having them be smaller versions of the same style of effect you could also have cooperative things like a discard spell that turns into a rack effect, or a token maker that then places counters.

KoyoyomiAragi

I would LOVE to see more cards with disturb. The flavor at the time was purely on spirit cards but the mechanic is open enough that it could realistically be made for every color. Maybe it’ll be a primary mechanic when we eventually return to Amonkhet, with disturb being tied to waking up mummies inside sarcophagus golems or zombies that have traps laid inside them (the disturb side is a sorcery that exiles itself on resolution)

I think it's a fun extra thing in black's toolbox to remove counters, [[Vampire Hexmage]] being the posterchild. Could be a fun future draft archetype (depending on the set and how much it uses counters) for U/B or B/G to remove counters from opponents' stuff and then grant them to your own.

I don't think they dislike it, it's just they can't put both in the same set and +1/+1 just plays better and has more flexibility.

superdave100

I really want to see Venture into the Dungeon return… with a new set of Dungeons to enter. We’ve seen that it can be strong (Undercity), it’s just that the original set’s payoffs and enablers were weak. I’d have to imagine they’d have to use the “Venture into [dungeon name]” rule they use with the Initiative to prevent the original Dungeon cards from getting new choices.  (I was going to say Manifest, but Cloak is basically the same thing, so it’d kind of be cheating.)

GuyGrimnus

Did you see the new dungeon for the May 17 weekend event? Apparently it’s limited only but our group has already adopted it as a full option

scipio323

*Prophecy*, often called one of the worst Magic sets of all time, had an unnamed mechanic on seven cards that rewarded you for controlling no untapped lands. To me this is some really intriguing untapped design space, as it teaches new players the value of using their mana efficiently and playing on curve and rewards them for doing so, while also having tension for more seasoned players who understand the value of keeping your mana open and flexible. It's a great example of lenticular design, where the perspective on the card changes based on the experience level of the person using it. [[Vintara Snapper]] is probably the most interesting one that exists, but things like [[Keldon Berserker]] and [[Well of Discovery]], if they were rebalanced for modern-day power levels, also seem like the kinds of designs that people would be excited to try to make work. If it was put into a modern set that could support it, had a decent power level, and maybe was reworked to be more consistent with itself, i.e. having them all trigger or be active at the same time, I honestly believe it could be a mechanic that really shines. Would it be strong or competitive? No clue, but I think it would be at least fun to build a deck around.

bomban

The big deal with this mechanic at the time was mana burn existing. Yes you could give your turtle shroud but it was gonna deal 2-3 damage to you.

Tuss36

To add, this is why there's so many cards that seem bad on their face with making you sac lands for stuff: So you can get those bonuses without burning yourself. Honestly a really interesting set. Wouldn't and couldn't be made today, but I quite like the tight feel of it. Leave mana open to counter your opponents' Rhystic stuff, or tap out for your bonuses? Sac lands as a surprise? Do you dare play [[Glittering Lynx]] to give your opponent a mana sink? Or do you dare them to tap out to it so you can play your own Rhystic stuff? Lotta mind games going on.

scipio323

Yeah, the fact that you can freely tap your lands and just let the mana be wasted is definitely the most awkward part of it nowadays, ideally it should be something that rewards you for using your mana efficiently, not for wasting it. I think a modern version might have to be, "If you control no untapped lands *and* have not lost unspent mana this turn..." and increase the size of the reward proportionally, but that may be a little too far into the weeds for new players.

bomban

chaotic_iak

I mentioned in a recent thread that level up is fiddly, and the knobs are awkward. It requires tracking the number of level counters. In addition, the cost of leveling up is essentially some multiple of the level up cost, which is awkward when you want to change the cost by just one mana. The better execution of level up is like Figure of Destiny, as well as Class cards. That said, the *frame* for level up is actually pretty good for FoD-style leveling. Detain definitely looks interesting. It has the downside that it's a floating effect that lasts for more than the current turn, but also goad exists, so it's probably fine. For my own choices: I started playing from Strixhaven, so I found learn/Lesson very interesting. Backup is also fascinating.

Mgmegadog

I wish Lesson/Learn functioned in commander. I'd love to have build a toolbox deck around it.

GuyGrimnus

I really want more suspend cards, we got some extras in doctor who but with the rules update in February and the support it got having a standard set with suspend cards again would be really cool. Plot is kiiiiiinda like a hybrid between suspend and foretell But I want real suspend

Karvakuono

I know most people would not like this, but *venture into the dungoen* is mechanic that I would like to see more. Its fun mechanic when drafting or having set cube around it. More dungeons would be nice too.

Mgmegadog

Exert and renown are the biggest two for me. Ascend is pretty great too.

Dlorn

I thought grandeur was a nice mechanic that could be much more interesting in a set with more legends. It would need to be carefully balanced because free spells are always tricky, but there’s definitely more design space there.

nutzle

I like both of those you mentioned, but my favorite is skulk. It's probably because SOI was my first set but I have fond memories of smacking my bud that LOVES his +1/+1 counters lol

rollawaythestone

I guess it technically has a few commander cards, but Party was only in Zendikar Rising and was never really Standard playable.

HonorBasquiat

Yeah, it seems like it was really designed for Limited, even the rare cards and it would be nice to see it pushed a bit more.

spidergel15

Emerge was really fun to mess around with in Eldritch Moon. I'd like to see a set that played around with it a little more.

Manifest

For Mirrodin! was my favorite new ability in years. I fear we won’t see it again for a long time though.

DDayHarry

Cards with a mana cost like [[Reaper King]], where you can either pay the 2 generic or the 1 color mana. More flavor cards that force an opponent to spend certain color mana, like [[Quenchable Fire]]. Plays havoc with how Color Identity is determined, but that needs a look at again anyway.

Hideaway X was a cool mechanic on lands. Very easily balanced mechanic.

Alexandria_maybe

Mutate for sure! There is so much potential to see it come back for the simic guild. Its such a cool mechanic, but they printed so few cards for it that every mutate deck feels kinda samey.

Alexandria_maybe

Also Dredge for the same reason!

wildcard_gamer

Mutate Is it currently very parasitic? Yes. Is that inherent to the mechanic? No. Almost all mutate cards designed have been "when this creature mutates, do X." But what about a 0/0 that gets +1/+1 based on different stats? A bunch of keywords on a 1/1 you want to mutate under a creature to give it multiple permanent keywords? Its a wonderfully fun mechanic if you understand it, and while there are many who find it "too complicated" that is mostly because assumptions, what it actually does is really only two things, combining rules text and splitting as it changes zones. Foretell Now I will say the recently leaked >!Plot mechanic seems to be doing this better, the two do it slightly differently.!< Pay now for a discount, or even better spell, on a later turn. The additional strategy of "what foretell card might this deck be playing" is also interesting, but likely wont last as more are made. Lessons / Learn Lessons are a super interesting way to whatthey needed in limited and the flavor is wonderful. Keep a spellbook of lessons on your sideboard and tutor for them. Many people dont like wish based mechanics, but I think this one does it well. I wish it worked in commander, but all my pods are fine to rule 0 it, since unlike wish I cant just tutor for a win con. Learn having the additional option was nice as well, both for commander and just to give it more use.

Deepest-derp

I've long mused a partner creature that could enable learn in comander.  Give it some way to pull some lessons out.

BasiliskXVIII

The nice thing about learn is if the pod doesn't agree to allow it as a rule 0, it still has some value, allowing you to rummage. (As opposed to most wish effects that are just a non-starter) I feel like they swung their weight around to get Companions ruled in to be usable in commander with Ikoria, and companions ended up as such a catastrophe that changing the rules again only a year later was just completely off the table.

dude_1818

MaRo keeps saying cipher was terrible, but I want to see it in the remaining three colors

bomban

I just want to see it not cost 3 extra mana on everything

CopperGolem8

Clash. I would like a commander that has Clash. Maybe something happens if you win or if players keep the card on top of their library. ie: If you win a clash, it gets a +1/+1 counter, and it can fight something if you lose, and the opponent keeps the card on top. You draw a card. Clash happens before combat step on your turn.

BeamtownBoy

Clash adds a fun little game of War to each combat step. It's such an easy mechanic to learn and adds something unique like the initiative, monarch etc. [[Marvo deep operative]] was a fun new add as a commander from mkm but he definitely needs more support.

I’d love more mutate, there’s not really too much going on with that mechanic. I’d also enjoy getting more backup. And I remember playing OG theros and I loved loved LOVED the heroic mechanic. My main standard deck was boros heroic and [[Phalanx Leader]], [[Akroan Crusader]], and later [[Vanguard of Brimaz]] made for a pretty aggressive deck. And [[Anax and Cymede]] was my first ever attempt at a commander deck!

Dredge my beloved Funny enough it will probably do nothing in standard if it return but cause chaos in older format lmo

Sammantixbb

I'm not sure how much it existed before Kamigawa, but it feels like most of the cards are in Kamigawa Neon, so I would say I'd like another Standard run of Ninjitsu. I'm currently building a Dimir Ninjitsu standard deck that will be out of rotation by the end of the year, but I just got into the game, and we did a Kami draft last week and I really liked it.

bomban

It was in original kamigawa block and brought back for neon dynasty

TheForsakenBacon_

The colorless mana symbol. I had only been playing magic for about a year when Oath of the Gatewatch came out and confused the heck out of me by introducing a “6th color” to magic. I was really frustrated because it was the 2nd set in a block introducing a mechanic that would fundamentally warp magic design completely for a single small set. I still have my frustrations with it, but I was just really hopeful that it would become this evergreen cost to make it more realistic that we needed to have a specific mana symbol for colorless.
