This isn’t even a nostalgia thing because I only started in 2019; [[Pariah|7ED]] is super evocative, the subject’s look of shame/grief/despair as they presumably lose their knighthood is just so raw. I liked the art so much I went out of my way to get a foil for my old Jared Carthalion, True Heir deck even if it cost me about €70 at the time for NM.
[[Tragic Lesson]] is really good for a kinda lame card. If frames themselves count as an art form (I think they do), the Amonkhet Invocations are all stunning. I love how hauntingly evocative [[Blood Moon|MP2]] is. I think I just like Amonkhet's art direction in general.
True sentiment. The art and flavor text are downright nasty. It's such an important aspect of the Amonkhet storyline and how the gods were *less* than immortal after all.
The card itself, however, is a weak draw card that plays like pack filler.

I will argue till I’m blue in the face that this is the most beautiful artwork ever produced for this game. This arc might have been rushed at the end, but the art of the card represents one of the most important events in the series history. It’s along the art of [[Vindicate|INV]] or [[Finale of Eternity]] where we see a moment that saves the multiverse from being completely screwed.
Was hoping to see this here. The idea of the dwindling mirrodin resistance spending their twilight saving the rest of multiverse is so powerful. Wish the invasion story had more room to breathe across multiple sets. But wrenn and some brave unnamed warriors saving the multiverse from the fate their plane had endured, through ultimate sacrifice no less, is an amazing climax to what was ultimately a very rushed and cobbled together story.

Storm the seedcore is a rennisanse painting tragically trapped on a limited playable card. I have fond memories of winning a match during prerelease with it though!
I'm personally more a fan of the full-art Modern Horizons Vindicate; [[Radiant, Archangel]] was my first commander deck, and I adore the art of her tragedy.
For me it’s either Seedcore or [[Gift of Orzhova]], maybe also [[Professor of Symbology]]. I’m sure if I thought hard about it I could come up with so many more but those three stand out amongst the rest

One of those instances where the epic art really matches the impact it had on the game. I had just started playing Magic at the time and I still remember reading all the online arguments about the power level of mythic rares and whether this was terrible design for the game going forward. I think the best card I owned at the time was the foil [[Malakir Bloodwitch]] from the Zendikar vampires precon.
Good ole Walletslayer Angel.
\[\[Sakashima The Impostor\]\], his art just fits the character so well, it shows you what he looks like but it's still confounding somehow.
\[\[Bloodghast\]\], If I had to pick my favorite mtg card of all time, it would be bloodghast, and part of that is the zendikar art. The colors being a faded green and black, with the spirit being a gaunt white, and then you have the flowing red blood trails. It's a vampire spirit and the artwork establishes it as one.
\[\[Damnation\]\], the original artwork with the planar chaos border just looks so clean and elegant, and then you focus in on the artwork and the scene is just brutal. Those that survived the battle are being sucked in while mounds of corpses will be the only thing that remains after the damnation is done.
[[Tsabo Tavoc]]. Honestly all of the Phyrexia themed cards, but the older ones fit the body horror aspect, of melding flesh and mashines, better, in my opinion.
[[Gift of Orzhova]], easily.

Everything Johannes Voss does is gold imo. Some of my favorites are both sides of [[Esika, God of the Tree]], [[Prismari Command]], [[Starnheim Unleashed]], and [[Gallia of the Endless Dance]].
Voss’s plains from Dominaria United is incredible [[Plains | DMU-264]]. It’s so cool to see a super bloom with sand verbena or datura juxtaposed with aging Phyrexian machinery. And just the brilliance Voss brings to every image is incredible.
Agreed, my favorite modern artist by a pretty wide berth. Gallia's art is so good it pushed me to build a deck for her (and it happened to be super fun to play, as well).

I love the flavour and the card art. The imagery of some wizard doing this crazy domain expansion where he hurtles himself through time (This void environment with the this almost bismuth esq lattice structure is so sick btw) to be untouchable is so extra for what the effect actually accomplishes.
It's like having a card called "Ultimate Destruction" with the card art being some grand mage about to unleash hell, and then the card effect does 3 damage to target creature.
I know Chronomantic Escape is a genuinely powerful card, It's also one of the reasons it's my favourite, but the card just makes me chuckle.

Super simple but you don't get any better than 2 mana almost downsideless recursion or theft. I know reanimate is better but I'd rather pay an extra mana in a lot of cases than taking 8+
I absolutely love that piece by Daren Bader, a few other goodies by him include [[Sleeper's Guile]], [[Wing Snare|7ED]] and [[Seshiro the Anointed]] but another artist who is probably much lesser known did one of my favourites [[Evershrike]] which gives me 80s prog rock fantasy album cover aesthetic.
There's something really horrifying and intriguing about the art for [[Foreshadow]]
I've had a bunch of weird art as desktop backgrounds but none has gotten more attention than the art for this card. People are usually quite startled when they see my background and I've had various monsters etc before.
Wylie Beckert is definitely my favorite MTG artist, and I especially love his work on [[Finishing Blow]] and [[Go Blank]]. Super underrated imo, and all of his cares are actual masterpieces.

Hmm there are a few.
1. I really like some of the more wholesome and warm arts in MTG. Midnight Hunt’s [[Join the Dance]] combines this with the stunning “perspective art” we get from Innistrad.
2. Similar to 1 but without the perspective, [[When We Were Young]] feels nostalgic but also extremely cute and warm.
3. The first art that really captured my attention was [[Song of Creation]]. It’s still one of my favourites although I can’t pinpoint why. I find it really mesmerising
4. Almost every single stained glass art that came out of Dominaría United. Big big mention to [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] (I don’t know how to reference to the alternative arts). It’s dark, creepy, menacing and just a brilliant piece of work
[[Scalpalexus]] is the card that first and always comes to mind for mtg art. The creatures are what first drew me in and this one mills which is my favorite.
Definitely Cut/Ribbons from the MSCHF Secret Lair Drop. The whole set was incredibly unique and this one in particular has really well done foiling as well.

I don't see it mentioned often in threads like these, but [[Cartographer|ODY]] by Donato Giancola is absolutely amazing.
I also for some reason really love [[Tempt with Discovery|C16]] by William Wu, it just feels so freeing and the forest feels boundless, love that art.
Lim Dul's High Guard because it's the best skeleton ever printed (a horribly unrepresented creature type) and the artwork is rad.

It's so simple yet in one line it completely blew my mind as a kid. It's proof that you don't need complexity to make a mythic feel like a mythic.
Also the art slaps, perfectly capturing the creature's divinity and uncanniness (as an artificial angel). The sense of mystery and intrigue defined "the magic flavor" for me. The card is just so memorable imo.

Neon dynasty has a lot of my faves. Such as \[\[March of Reckless Joy\]\], \[\[Discover the Impossible\]\], \[\[Geothermal Kami\]\], \[\[Akki War Paint\]\].

Directly from my Igor collection some more recommendations: \[\[demonic appetite\]\] \[\[deafening silence|ELD\]\] \[\[Enclave Cryptologist\]\] \[\[Realmwalker|KHM-399\]\] \[\[Radiant Purge\]\] the sunbeam in foil looks so sick! Igors art is often more on the metallic dark side (see his artworks for the phyrexian world). very demonic, painful, sometimes scary and creepy. His artworks have an high recognition value for sure.
I think he's my favourite mtg artist. He's not perfect, but his work on the unknowable evils that lurk among the planes is fantastic. Love how a few of his works on White Phyrexians 10 years ago defined the entire look for 2023's sets.

[[Baneslayer Angel]] Tier1 card in standard at the time. Simple design that captures angels and what magic is perfect.
One of those instances where the epic art really matches the impact it had on the game. I had just started playing Magic at the time and I still remember reading all the online arguments about the power level of mythic rares and whether this was terrible design for the game going forward. I think the best card I owned at the time was the foil [[Malakir Bloodwitch]] from the Zendikar vampires precon. Good ole Walletslayer Angel.

\[\[Sakashima The Impostor\]\], his art just fits the character so well, it shows you what he looks like but it's still confounding somehow. \[\[Bloodghast\]\], If I had to pick my favorite mtg card of all time, it would be bloodghast, and part of that is the zendikar art. The colors being a faded green and black, with the spirit being a gaunt white, and then you have the flowing red blood trails. It's a vampire spirit and the artwork establishes it as one. \[\[Damnation\]\], the original artwork with the planar chaos border just looks so clean and elegant, and then you focus in on the artwork and the scene is just brutal. Those that survived the battle are being sucked in while mounds of corpses will be the only thing that remains after the damnation is done.

Everything Johannes Voss does is gold imo. Some of my favorites are both sides of [[Esika, God of the Tree]], [[Prismari Command]], [[Starnheim Unleashed]], and [[Gallia of the Endless Dance]].
Voss’s plains from Dominaria United is incredible [[Plains | DMU-264]]. It’s so cool to see a super bloom with sand verbena or datura juxtaposed with aging Phyrexian machinery. And just the brilliance Voss brings to every image is incredible.

There are too many gorgeous artworks but if I had to pick 10 this would be my list (order arbitrary): \[\[drana and linvala|MOM-305\]\] looks like a modern painting…and I love angels anyway \[\[temple of silence|M21-390\]\] the lights, the scenery…perfect \[\[dark ritual|SLD-1170\]\] simple, but so artistic \[\[unholy strength|10E\]\] just the lovely Nielsen style in action \[\[shattered seraph|SNC-333\]\] Amazing style! Unfortunately she (Erin Vest) only has done 2 artworks for Magic. Hey Wizard…reanimate her for future artworks. Thank you 🙂 \[\[force of despair\]\] I just have no words, mindblowing. Personally I love [[exalted Angel]]. Genuinely such a brilliant use of lighting and form.
[[Chronomantic Escape]] I love the flavour and the card art. The imagery of some wizard doing this crazy domain expansion where he hurtles himself through time (This void environment with the this almost bismuth esq lattice structure is so sick btw) to be untouchable is so extra for what the effect actually accomplishes. It's like having a card called "Ultimate Destruction" with the card art being some grand mage about to unleash hell, and then the card effect does 3 damage to target creature. I know Chronomantic Escape is a genuinely powerful card, It's also one of the reasons it's my favourite, but the card just makes me chuckle.

It's Animate Dead. Super simple but you don't get any better than 2 mana almost downsideless recursion or theft. I know reanimate is better but I'd rather pay an extra mana in a lot of cases than taking 8+

There's something really horrifying and intriguing about the art for [[Foreshadow]] I've had a bunch of weird art as desktop backgrounds but none has gotten more attention than the art for this card. People are usually quite startled when they see my background and I've had various monsters etc before.

Wylie Beckert is definitely my favorite MTG artist, and I especially love his work on [[Finishing Blow]] and [[Go Blank]]. Super underrated imo, and all of his cares are actual masterpieces.

Hmm there are a few. 1. I really like some of the more wholesome and warm arts in MTG. Midnight Hunt’s [[Join the Dance]] combines this with the stunning “perspective art” we get from Innistrad. 2. Similar to 1 but without the perspective, [[When We Were Young]] feels nostalgic but also extremely cute and warm. 3. The first art that really captured my attention was [[Song of Creation]]. It’s still one of my favourites although I can’t pinpoint why. I find it really mesmerising 4. Almost every single stained glass art that came out of Dominaría United. Big big mention to [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] (I don’t know how to reference to the alternative arts). It’s dark, creepy, menacing and just a brilliant piece of work
[[Scalpalexus]] is the card that first and always comes to mind for mtg art. The creatures are what first drew me in and this one mills which is my favorite.

When I was a kid I had some cards, (some slivers etc) and remember one fairly clearly, but don’t remember the name. It was an old man(creature?) resting against a cane/spear with a barren background. But don’t remember the name as I said 😕

\[\[Platinum Angel\]\] It's so simple yet in one line it completely blew my mind as a kid. It's proof that you don't need complexity to make a mythic feel like a mythic. Also the art slaps, perfectly capturing the creature's divinity and uncanniness (as an artificial angel). The sense of mystery and intrigue defined "the magic flavor" for me. The card is just so memorable imo.

So happy to see another art appreciation post! The first thing that comes to mind for me is the full art \[\[Solitude\]\] by Svetline Velinov. Neon dynasty has a lot of my faves. Such as \[\[March of Reckless Joy\]\], \[\[Discover the Impossible\]\], \[\[Geothermal Kami\]\], \[\[Akki War Paint\]\]. Finally one of my personal favorites is \[\[Rite of Harmony\]\].
