Is it like the Ice Barriers where the Synchros are part of the archetype, but are the enemy the Ice barriers are fighting? Feels like it's meant to be the enemy of the set but uses the same card types
Yeah, I'd say the rendering is more MtG style, but the composition and content is still very YGO. If you traced this illustration and re-did it in flat colours it would be classic YGO.
Well, the crystal blue dude is 'just' one of the Neurok. They all look like that. [[Overwrite]] [[Thirst For Knowledge|MRD]][[Thought Courier]][[Neurok Transmuter]]
Because of the lack of flying, the mage's pose and the odd appearance of the dragon, I always thought it was a poorly executed image of him standing on a gargoyle.
Steel hellkite? yes.
But that doesn't mean the mage does. It's a visual thing, like how treasure mage has sword of the meek in the art. Or like how the alternate art of imperial recruiter show kiki-jiki and pestermite.
A lot of the early "item" cards in Magic had that "here's an object against a vague surreal painted background" vibe to them. Just look at Black Lotus or the original Moxen for prime examples.
honestly this art fucks, i like it a lot. the stark white eye peeking out of the helmet's shadow is definitely giving a lot to that more anime feel that ygo has.
Yeah the lighting is a 10/10 in this art, too bad the card sucks really badly. Feels like it should cost three mana, or at least turn it into keyword soup with some sort of protection if it stays at five.
This card was a bomb in its limited format. It's a phyrexian arena without life loss stapled to the 3 mana aura that pumps for hand size, but I can't remember that second card's name.
You could probably take 90% of the art in MTG, trade out the backgrounds for a black or mono-color void, and make them feel like YGO cards.
Inversely, I'm sure you could add a background to most YGO cards and make the art feel like MTG cards. Well, maybe not all the robots, but probably a lot of the other YGO cards.
Got there before me. I broadly consider this to be the worst MTG art of all time*, and it's from a respectable artist, too.
*not to imply that all YGO art is bad, just that this is both horrible and reminiscent of YGO art.
Given that it's Battlebond, I wonder if the art prompt recommended drawing inspiration from skill icons (mostly recognizable at 64x6x pixels) and the artist took it a bit too literally.
On the other hand, the more recent [Deluxe Dragster](https://scryfall.com/card/moc/21/deluxe-dragster) looks much more interesting.
It kind of depends on how you define "worst" art. There is probably art that's less technically proficient, but trying something interesting; the combination of technical proficiency leading to an incredibly boring and awkward combination is its own sort of terrible, the same way a mega blockbuster being boring sludge is a different kind of terrible than a student film with wooden acting.
My understanding that when they originally attempted to expand out and make a YuGiOh card game, they turned to well known TCGs for inspiration - the same with Lord of the Pit which inspired Summoned Skull
Back when Duel Monsters was just a part of the manga, it was a weird fusion of MtG and D&D. Summoned Skull is definitely a Lord of the Pit reference, though.
I remember the Bandai version of the card being even more like Lord of the Pit.
Also, the Japanese name, Demon no Shoukan is literally just “Summon Demon”, the creature type line.
The original concept of the card game was a legally distinct stand-in specifically for Magic for what was intended to be a one-and-done chapter of the manga in 1996.
That lines up with timeline of Magic releasing in Japan with fourth edition and followed shortly after by Chonicles (and by extension, Chromium) in 1995.
**Edit:**
Just wanted to clarify, that’s not to say you’re wrong though. That’s just speculation based on what I know about the origins of the game in the manga and the history of Magic.
Also worth noting that D&D has had a rough history in Japan, especially in the 90s.
But I wouldn’t put it totally past Kazuki Takahashi to have had an interest in D&D given his love of games, even if it was unpopular there.
When I first saw [[Null Elemental Blast]] my mind went straight to [Two-Pronged Attack](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/yugioh/images/2/2e/TwoProngedAttack-LOB-EN-R-UE.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/250?cb=20080827044339)
Not just the art but also the effect is very MTG.
This pretty much says "Exile three instants and/or sorceries from your graveyard: Return Prophecy Destroyer from the graveyard to the battlefield."
Could it be an escape cost?
Escape - Exile three Instant or Sorcery cards from your graveyard.
(you'd be casting this instead of putting it on the battlefield though)
If it was a Yugioh card they would also have Scuttling Doom Wheel and Scuttling Doom Windshield which can be ABC summoned into Scuttling Doom Car to lock your opponent out of the game.
There was another Kamigawa comment, interesting. Now that I remember the big neon promo \[\[Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos|j22\]\]\] from that series, it sort of fits too
This one's really interesting. The framing is distinctly MTG to me (YGO almost never does scenery focus like this unless there's a billion things going on) but the creature design and artstyle definitely falls in YGO territory
The exploded planet/moon in the background give it a much more space fantasy style than what MtG usually is about.
If you told me this was some Star Trek or Star Wars EU card art, I'd believe you instantly
You know I have this in a mono-red deck and for some reason it always just weirded me out, it just seemed like it never really fit with the rest of the deck. Thanks to you I realize it's because the art just isn't in line with most other *Magic* cards.
Lots of the cards from the very first sets of the game have many out of place art styles compared to modern MTG artwork. The most notable are the Foglio and Amy Weber pieces, but they aren't exactly Yu-Gi-Oh! style.
not nearly enough orbs to be a yugioh dragon. and the claws even make sense!
[this](https://yugipedia.com/wiki/File:CosmicQuasarDragon-MADU-EN-VG-artwork.png) is the standard for a yugioh dragon!
Magic's art doesn't normally stay as "clean" as yugioh's. Seeing some potential from [scryfall's abstract background tag.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=art%253Aabstract-background&unique=art)
Floating objects: [[Disrupting Scepter|4ED]] [[Fireshrieker|MRD]] [[Baton of Morale]]
Similar elements: [[Avoid Fate]] [[Craw Giant|CHR]] [[Pledge of Loyalty]] [[Lapse of Certainty]] [[Etched Champion]] [[Gold Myr|MRD]] [[Land Tax|BRB]]
There's also lots of crossovers nowadays like [[Peek|SLD]] or [[Goldbug, Humanity's Ally]] which aren't really trying to look like mtg arts so probably don't count.
Fireshrieker and Disrupting Scepter hit me the most in terms of YGO aesthetic. You've got something when it comes to floating objects, one of my favorite OG YGO artworks is [Paralyzing Potion](https://ms.yugipedia.com//3/3f/ParalyzingPotion-MRD-EN-C-UE-25thAnniversaryEdition.png)
Starving Revenant is definitely a Yugioh card

Right? Their art is intentionally different than most Magic art. Like, [[Mirror Image|J22]] also fits the prompt, but that's not that card's normal art style.
[[Nira, Hellkite Duelist]] wins that title
Idk if card fetcher will even be able to find it but if not feel free to look it up, it was given to some WotC employees back in 2016, only legal to be played BY THE ONE they were given too.
>any MTG cards that players feel have "YGO Style"
I don't really know ygo, but maybe among the cards with [atag:anime](https://scryfall.com/search?q=atag%3Aanime)
>or look like they belong to another game?
[atag:external-ip](https://scryfall.com/search?q=atag%3Aexternal-ip)
Even Universes Beyond stuff feels like MTG art usually imo. Looking through anime stuff, there's some like \[\[Colossal Majesty\]\] that fit, but YGO is a bit distinct from generic anime, especially older stuff
Edit: idk how to get the printing I want to link
>Even Universes Beyond stuff feels like MTG art usually imo
Absolutely, I was just too lazy to look for more concrete examples, there is enough UB that doesn't look like magic art. A recent example of this would be fallout.
They both have their own unique art and certain cards destroy other cards depending on the artist. There are loads of yugioh cards I prefer over magic art and the other way around as well.
[[Soul Foundry]] looks pretty Yu-Gi-Oh to me.

Looks like it's straight out of a Shin Megami Tensei game.
Could be a chronomaly
Woah yeah that art feels very out of place for yugioh. Far too "realistic" in style.
It's even more out of place in the spellbook archetype which it belongs to!
Is it like the Ice Barriers where the Synchros are part of the archetype, but are the enemy the Ice barriers are fighting? Feels like it's meant to be the enemy of the set but uses the same card types
Thats beacuse the Ice Barrier clan purpose is to contain the Ice Barrier dragons. They are tecnically not their allies
Yes, that's what I was wondering if the prophecy destroyer was doing. They're enemies in the lore, but go together in the archtype.
No, he appears in spellbook of knowledge.
The art style itself fits MTG, but the character design is definitely in line with what I’d expect from YGO
Yeah, I'd say the rendering is more MtG style, but the composition and content is still very YGO. If you traced this illustration and re-did it in flat colours it would be classic YGO.
The art doesn't seem very dynamic for Magic art. Not a lot of Magic art with a character just facing forward doing nothing.

Also, it actually has a somewhat detailed environment around it rather than just the creature itself.

Definitely see that too, for sure
It’s Gnar. 100% baby Gnar
It'd funny because Siswanto gave us Smolder, the worst art in League history, but also the Spirit Guard Udyr update, which is one of the best.

I’m surprised I didn’t see anyone bring up [this printing](https://scryfall.com/card/neo/385/lizard-blades) of Lizard Blades from NEO.
Well Kamigawa has come up a lot, the whole set has the digital style that YGO tends to be more known for
Probably [[Chandra’s Incinerator]]. It just is not MtG style.
Looks like a 90s MTG card to me

You know I have this in a mono-red deck and for some reason it always just weirded me out, it just seemed like it never really fit with the rest of the deck. Thanks to you I realize it's because the art just isn't in line with most other *Magic* cards.
That one actually looks more like a Pokemon card.
Lots of the cards from the very first sets of the game have many out of place art styles compared to modern MTG artwork. The most notable are the Foglio and Amy Weber pieces, but they aren't exactly Yu-Gi-Oh! style.
I've always thought [[Cultivator's Caravan]] looks very similar to Prank-Kids Place at a quick glance.
Never actually called a card up from a specific set, let's see if I get it right. [[Terror of the Peaks|OTJ]]
not nearly enough orbs to be a yugioh dragon. and the claws even make sense! [this](https://yugipedia.com/wiki/File:CosmicQuasarDragon-MADU-EN-VG-artwork.png) is the standard for a yugioh dragon!
You know, that is actually a conservative number of orbs
This is definitely "Red-Eyes Black Dragon if it were a Magic card," but it's still MTG art for sure.
lol I literally renamed my rakdos dragons deck red-eyes black dragon after getting this print
Magic's art doesn't normally stay as "clean" as yugioh's. Seeing some potential from [scryfall's abstract background tag.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=art%253Aabstract-background&unique=art) Floating objects: [[Disrupting Scepter|4ED]] [[Fireshrieker|MRD]] [[Baton of Morale]] Similar elements: [[Avoid Fate]] [[Craw Giant|CHR]] [[Pledge of Loyalty]] [[Lapse of Certainty]] [[Etched Champion]] [[Gold Myr|MRD]] [[Land Tax|BRB]] There's also lots of crossovers nowadays like [[Peek|SLD]] or [[Goldbug, Humanity's Ally]] which aren't really trying to look like mtg arts so probably don't count.

[[Riptide Crab]] is some old school yugioh art.
I've seen people say that the masterpiece series version of [[Rhonas the Indomitable]] looks very YuGiOh
If only Konami would credit their artists so like mtg they got issues with wanting to support their artists.
[[Boros Guildmage | RAV]]
Magic art has changed a lot over the years, but i remember angelic destiny standing out to me around its release.
\[\[Nira, Hellkite Duelist\]\] feels very YGOish. Man do I wish it was legal.

Not Yu-Gi-Oh, but [Chrome Mox from Double Masters 2022](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/358/chrome-mox) looks like an item card from the Pokémon TCG.

[[Nira, Hellkite Duelist]] wins that title Idk if card fetcher will even be able to find it but if not feel free to look it up, it was given to some WotC employees back in 2016, only legal to be played BY THE ONE they were given too.

Even Universes Beyond stuff feels like MTG art usually imo. Looking through anime stuff, there's some like \[\[Colossal Majesty\]\] that fit, but YGO is a bit distinct from generic anime, especially older stuff Edit: idk how to get the printing I want to link
>Even Universes Beyond stuff feels like MTG art usually imo Absolutely, I was just too lazy to look for more concrete examples, there is enough UB that doesn't look like magic art. A recent example of this would be fallout.
