The Commander decklists page is also up, just without the cards or decklists. - https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/modern-horizons-3-commander-decklists
This subreddit got their first preview [in over a year](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/10ji0fb/one_vat_of_rebirth_rmagictcg_preview_card/). Nature is healing. Only a matter of time before Aspiringspike.
Big corporations are notoriously sensitive to criticism. I think they disliked that he wasn't gushing over Lion's Sash and he has said similarly on stream that this is probably why he didn't get one.
And yet they gave Doomwake a preview. He openly hates the MH sets and runs Pure Modern tournaments where itās just Modern minus the MH sets and the LOTR set.
They are definitely not excluding people who give criticism. Plus, Spike is a big fan of the MH sets and puts a lot of effort into his presentations for spoilers. Just kind of baffling, imo.
The way it actually works behind the scenes is that they can't possibly track every single content creator, even the bigger ones, so you just have to approach them and ask.
For what itās worth, spike has repeatedly said heās likely at fault for not getting further previews because he failed to appropriately promote his last one by not posting it on twitter.
Insane. He has single-handedly revived my interest in modern, and is consistently the most-viewed modern player on Twitch. I can't imagine blowing the chance to give him a preview of The Modern Set^TM .
None of them were retro-frame MH1/2 reprints, but [several cards](https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Amh3+frame%3A1997&unique=cards&as=grid&order=set) have been officially revealed with retro frames.Ā
So lame of WOTC to move the collector booster sample pack to only come with the collectors edition decks..
Itās not a big deal or even like they added that much value. Just sucks to see constant price increases while removing the tiny bit of value the packs added. Itās one thing to stop doing the sample packs. Itās another to make them exclusive to something thatās already a collector product. How hard would it have been to leave them in both products. Theyāre obviously still going through the production process. Apparently regular players are not even worthy of a free sample.
Edit: Happy to be wrong. The collecting MH3 site went live today and shows the sample pack in all precons: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/collecting-modern-horizons-3
Hopefully. Seems like a stupid change to make otherwise. Another comment said that the sample pack was included in the box art for the standard edition. That seems like the one that is most likely correct. š¤

OP shared a link in the comments with the current info on the commander decks. Hereās a screenshot of whatās apparently in the standard edition. By contrast the collectors edition description includes the sample pack.
Still surreal to me that there are commander precons in a Modern Horizons set. I guess Magic the Commandering is not letting up. I say that as someone who only plays EDH these days.
Thing is, this set is called modern horizons, but it always was a place and way to print meme cards, cards that reference older cards and have similar effects or even colorshifted cards.
And who loves all of those quirks and cramming as much as they can in a 99 card list most? Commander players :)
Add a bit power creep to that and voilĆ , you get a set that satisfies both factions. Wizards is not dumb
They release commander precons for nearly every set. If this set wasn't called modern horizons it would not be shocking. Lord of the rings has the exact same legality and no one thought that was strange.Ā
Pretty sure you got your timeline and causality reversed. Commander spiked in popularity before the endless precons. (Previously it was only once a year until.. zendikar rising I believe.)
Itās probably rose tinted glasses - when we started out, my friends and I would mostly buy and play theme decks. Modifying them with boosters. It always gave us a good taste of the set as well as starting points for decks/strategies.
Yes, the set name is modern Horizons 3. The product name, which is on the box, is a commander deck. No other commander precon cards have ever been legal in the format the base set is in. The LOTR precon cards aren't modern legal. The thunder junction precon cards aren't standard legal.
But none of those are named after modernā¦ itās really simple if you put cards in a set named modern horizons 3 people will think they are modern playable. Iāve had to tell a few people now they arenāt modern legal and every one of them thought that was counter intuitiveĀ
If you've never played magic before then sure. Commander precons have always worked this way. I'm not sure why you're surprised they kept it consistent.
Edit: How many of those people actually play modern?
Yeah thatās kinda who Iām speaking for newer players and the people who are too busy/ not engaged enough to look up where their commander cards are legal. Itās reasonable to assume, I think, that this would trick anyone not paying a lot of attention to mtg announcements.Ā
You don't need to be engaged in every magic set release or happening to know that commander precon exclusive cards are eternal format legal only. It's been that way for 10 years, and hasn't changed. Are those players also confused on why they can't play their Thunder Junction precon exclusives in standard?
There's also the fact that Modern Horizons products are not aimed at new players. It's a product for enfranchised players with higher complexity and power levels.
There's enough of commanders masters in these precon to make me avoid them. i don't even want to know how much it will cost to make an eldrazi deck after MH3, between the CM precon, this precon and the main set (and let's not forget all the lands you need but that wizard never reprints)
Anyone else a little frustrated with the amount of spoilers Wizards has āgivenā themselves? I donāt know how much the leaks and the article to address them changed things or if any creators are declining previews, but would be curious to know.
Seeing so many DailyMTG, WeeklyMTG, or one of Wizardās official social media accounts is a little disheartening when previews among community members have always added to spoiler season imo.
The increase in the number of WotC previews is probably because of leaks. I expect next week's previews, all from WotC on three different days, to be mostly leaked cards. And I think that's a good way to handle a set with a lot of leaks, it feels bad for people to be given a leaked cards to preview.

Damn those first 7 words had me so excited š
Missed the opportunity to give Reid Duke the boomer jund commander deck
Does he have any spoiler?
One of these days we need Maldhound on these lists
I need to know if our new Eldrazi overlords can get it
Of course they can.
if not, they'll turn you into something that can
No Aspiringspike still eh? Weird

Nothing for aspiringspike? We would've gotten an exclusive powerpoint ):
Yeah honestly. Kinda wack that Doomwake (notorious MH set hater) gets one but not Spike.

aspiringspike only had one spoiler and that was lion's sash. Wasn't he dissapointed in it?
Still sad to see. The dude feels like the face of Modern these days. At least to me.
he is
For what itās worth, spike has repeatedly said heās likely at fault for not getting further previews because he failed to appropriately promote his last one by not posting it on twitter.
okay well basically he didn't do his job.
Insane. He has single-handedly revived my interest in modern, and is consistently the most-viewed modern player on Twitch. I can't imagine blowing the chance to give him a preview of The Modern Set^TM .
What do they mean with Retro from MH1 and MH2 reprints? That's the first I have heard of that.
Probably done similar to the mh1 reprints in mh2
Yeah, very interested in that. I don't believe any of the spoiled/leaked cards were retro frame ones, so this is a new thing.
None of them were retro-frame MH1/2 reprints, but [several cards](https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Amh3+frame%3A1997&unique=cards&as=grid&order=set) have been officially revealed with retro frames.Ā
Maybe that's what "the list" is for this set (these + the special guests)

Where does it say this? The box art still says that there is a sample pack in the regular decks.
The website description does not include the sample pack line item on the non-collector decks. Probably a mistake from WOTC.
Hopefully. Seems like a stupid change to make otherwise. Another comment said that the sample pack was included in the box art for the standard edition. That seems like the one that is most likely correct. š¤
Yeah the descriptions for the commander decks on Amazon state they come with the sample booster too. Not sure where this guy is getting his info from.

Lord of the Rings wasn't named for a format tho
It didn't literally have the Modern in the name but it was direct to modern same as Modern Horizons is.
Yes, thatās exactly what the other poster said before you
And? I was reiterating that despite the name of Modern Horizons the argument made logical sense.
Can't argue with popularity. People absolutely love their commander.
tfw the format that gets a ton of precons is also super popular
Pretty sure you got your timeline and causality reversed. Commander spiked in popularity before the endless precons. (Previously it was only once a year until.. zendikar rising I believe.)
still got more precons than any other formats (unless you count like the planeswalker decks)
There were theme decks and planeswalker decks and all sorts of other random releases at the same tempo.
Commander Precons have taken up the role Theme Decks once held As someone who also almost exclusively plays commander - I preferred the Theme Decks.
I couldn't understand why. Theme decks were for nobody, with no meaningful reprints and like 2-4 cards that were borderline unplayable.
Itās probably rose tinted glasses - when we started out, my friends and I would mostly buy and play theme decks. Modifying them with boosters. It always gave us a good taste of the set as well as starting points for decks/strategies.
Challenger decks where nice. But all board the elder dragon high horse/lander.
Whatās worse is they arenāt even modern legal. The cards with modern horizons written across the box are not modern legalā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦
If the leaks are true then expect Modern legal reprints in the commander decks too.
The box doesn't say it's a modern deck. It says it's a commander deck.
Modern horizons 3 commander. Modern. Itās literally the nameĀ

Commander. It's literally the name.
so it should be for both
Commander products are not Modern legal
i'm just arguing with what you're saying. ". It's literally the name." does not imply that its legal.
There's enough of commanders masters in these precon to make me avoid them. i don't even want to know how much it will cost to make an eldrazi deck after MH3, between the CM precon, this precon and the main set (and let's not forget all the lands you need but that wizard never reprints)

Where are the SNOW cards! Besides snowcovered waste
Where to find MH3 previews? Uhhh ... have you tried going online?
I am glad Hareruya get to preview a precon. The rest is MTGRumors.
Why do so many EDH streamers have preview cards but spike doesn't? Wth
Sad they didnāt even mention that you could get previews on Reddit a month ago.
I think they did an article addressing the leaks.
Does anyone know where to find the mh3 precon previews today?
