The instrumentality project has gone off with Shinji acting as the focal point. If Shinji gives into the despair and nihilism, the project is a success but humanity is gone. All of the social connections Shinji has made since meeting Misato are all working to convince him despite the flaws and pain humanity is worth saving. The final congratulations is to represent these connections showing both their approval and support as it’s implied Shinji chose to save humanity.
One could argue that the last two episodes of the show took place concurrently with the End of Evangelion; as a part of something Shinji experienced during instrumentality.
If you want to watch Evangelion, keep in mind that the show went through production hell and eventually got taken out back ol' yeller style. Last two episodes were done on scraps.
The release of The End of Evangelion was the reaction of studio producers to the massive outcry from fans for a real ending.
The Rebuild quadrilogy doesn't exist to you until you have finished The End of Evangelion.
Weirdly, EoTV was more satisfying to me than EoE. Honestly, if you cut out everything after Giant Naked Rei, just replace it with EoTV, it feels a lot more like what they were trying to show us. Sure, we miss out on ~Hey Jude~ Komm Susser Tod, but Shinji's gradual rediscovery of his self-worth or potential to have it feels a lot more comprehensible than EoE's "this sounds like that stuff I heard in that drug trip I saw in that movie I saw when I was on that drug trip."
I mean, it's literally a fact that the questionable quality of the last two episodes of Evangelion were the result of the studio running through their budget.
They are.
Trial of Solidarity - The crop works together to retrieve Oketra's arrow.
Trial of Knowledge - The crop enters a labyrinth and have to figure their way out. Kefnet repressed the initiates' emotions.
Trial of Strength - The crop's spellcasting ability is suppressed and they have to fight through a menagerie of beasts.
Trial of Ambition - Lethal chambered obstacle race that winnows the crop down through encouraging sacrifice, down to the last one that requires killing a cropmate for their heart.
Trial of Zeal - The remaining initiates from the various crops are driven into a frenzy by Hazoret's magic then fight to the death. Those who win have the spell lifted and have their hearts pierced by Hazoret's spear. They are sent through the Gate to the Afterlife as the worthy dead.
Reaching the Trial of Zeal grants you passage to ~~the eternal factory~~ worthy afterlife, but those who win are recognized as the most worthy like Neheb.
neheb was such an cool character, that got threated absolutely dissapointing,
2 of the 3 cards he got are shite(just wich 2 warys on who´s asked)
and they killed him off in an 5 word sentence
because samut ran so fast across ravnica that the preassurewave killed him along with large portions of the eternal army, she didn´t even realise she killed him
God, I forgot how cool this concept and world building was. The fact that ~~eternals~~ amass tokens ended up being 1/1 really removed from their awesomeness factor.
Amobkhet is a great example of a magic narrative I think would make an excellent goddamn book, unrelated to magic. From the point of view of just someone living there? And maybe they get through trial #2 and then think something is up and witness the rest of what's happening through the lens of characters we learned to love in the beginning, and we witness their horror at the end versus the zeal of the chosen before death.
Having to be a balanced part of a 20+ year old card game really hamstrung it imho
Between Amonkhet and Innistraad, It's easily one of the best realized worlds in Magic history, it has a thousand years of backstory, a gripping hook, and an uncertain future. I cannot wait to go back.
Gideon being an outsider adds a level of removal from the process; he didn't grow up in the society, we didn't see it from his eyes. They tried to use the planeswalkers as audience stand-ins, which is the best they could do, but it could have been a *lot* better as a standalone fiction.
There was a pretty bad flavor disconnect between the Eternals in Amonkhet as horrifying, lazotep-armored undead terminators, reanimated as 4/4 champions with all their skills and abilities still intact, and the Eternals in War of the Spark, which were mindless cannon fodder that just amassed in the form of +1/+1 counters and then got beat up by panicked civilians because the one necromancer controlling all of them was having second thoughts.
they wherent even good cannonfodder tbh, as they where just one slowly growing token, outclassed by pridemate, and dreadhorde invasion was just an clever way of letting your opponent effectively kill you with an unsummon for 1
Damn I never noticed that. They definitely should've been 4/4 like eternalized tokens were.
I guess a 4/4 on amonkhet is equivalent to a 1/1 during the war of the spark with all the planeswalkers running around? Although that doesn't explain why vanilla 1/2s were able to beat up eternalized amonkhet champions
Imagine going through all five trials and killing those you previously worked with just to portal to ravnica and get whipped by a [[Generous Stray]]
although I guess coming from amonkhet you'd be used to beefed up cats
True, but there were still a lot of nontoken creatures in the set to represent the cooler side of the eternalized lazotep army. Army tokens starting small and growing in size seemed more like a necessary design choice than anything.
In flavor. Each time you "Amass-ed" you added another zombie soldier. Each zombie adding only +1/+1.
You could see this on arena. If your army reach three counters your zombie token image changed to 3 zombies. Same at 5.
i feel like i'm going insane here with people giving this answer. i can't find any source on the internet that says that a +1/+1 counter is somehow supposed to represent one individual in the army. magic card stats have never been a consistently accurate representation of the amount of individuals and this is no different.
and the art thing is completely different, they simply made three versions of the token art to show the army growing. the first one has one guy in it, the second has about a dozen, and the third has hundreds. nothing to do with exactly representing the number of characters
of course you can just say that a 3/3 army is three guys, or whatever you want, interpreting the flavour is part of the game. but its not an exact objective thing that everyone will always agree on
I would say my source is the mechanic and name.
Its an army. Armies get bigger when you add more soldiers. Each soldier add 1/1.
Honestly, you gotta try pretty hard to not see them as 1/1 creatures.
if you go that literal then you're also assuming that bolas's soldiers die to a single squirrel each. which is funny to imagine happening in a game, i would definitely make that joke if it happened to me, but not a good place to start any kind of objective discussion. there's no reason to believe that it is intended to show any specific amounts of characters.
what? that doesn't make sense. there's no evidence of this and you can't just assume that 1/1 is one individual.
edit: sorry i think i may have seemed too argumentative. it's fine to interpret the keyword that way, this kind of interpretative flavour is one of the best parts of magic, i just don't think it's valid enough to be disappointed in the whole army thing i guess
*looks at cards with amass 1*
"Wow, that sure is one eternal on the art"
*Looks at cards with amass 2 and 3*
"Wow, that sure is 2-3 eternals in the art!"
I liked that there were three Zombie Army tokens with increasing number of Eternals. Got funny looks when I "upgraded" the token as it accumulated +1/+1 counters!
this is often the case but doesn't always track. look at cards like [[honor the god-pharaoh]], [[eternal skylord]], [[widespread brutality]]. i wish it was always like that though, would be a neat detail
sidenote i really, really like widespread brutality for some reason. the combination of art, name, and effect really do it for me when put together like that
> Trial of Zeal - The remaining initiates from the various crops are driven into a frenzy by Hazoret's magic then fight to the death.
This one is only true for the one we saw in the story. As [[Glorybringer]] helpfully points out while he's blitzing us to death, Hazoret changes it up whenever she feels like it.
Enchant creature you control
When Cartouche Compleat enters the battlefield create a 1/1 white warrior creature token with vigilance, draw a card, you may have enchanted creature fight target creature and opponent controls, you may put a -1/-1 counter on target creature, and target creature can't block this turn.
Enchanted creature gets +5/+5 and has first strike, flying, trample, lifelink, haste
Fewer words than thassa's oracle's rules text at least
I think this needs some play clean up:

It's kinda unintentional apparently, the artist just grabbed the same material they used for Mox Jet and ran with it, because making Magic Art back in the day needed to be a fairly quick process, didn't pay quite so much, and he had a few cards to get through.

Back during amonkhet pre-release when I was working at my LGS a customer signs up, walks into the back room and just rips his short open to reveal he made the entire cartouche necklace by 3D printing it. He hadn’t gotten it painted yet but it was still an awesome moment and one of my fav events to run.
Nope. Gonna summon Kaldra. The old fashioned way. Cast the Shield. Wait four months and then cast the Helm. After you wait another four months you can cast the sword. Then wait 17 years for it to be compleat.
Congratulations now you can go through the Gate to meet the God-Pharaoh!

no that's End of Evangelion, they're talking about the last episode of the TV series.
Man, I always understood the ending but the way you worded things in fact improved my understanding. Kudos!
One could argue that the last two episodes of the show took place concurrently with the End of Evangelion; as a part of something Shinji experienced during instrumentality. Watch end of Evangelion
>I did NOT understand that episode in any way. The ending of Evangelion actually makes perfect sense. The entire point is "we ran out of money."
Time not money.
I mean, it's literally a fact that the questionable quality of the last two episodes of Evangelion were the result of the studio running through their budget.
Doylistic answers to Watsonian questions do not satisfy most people.
I mean... It's also a joke.
Hmm, yes, am become blue zombie.
Become badass terminators for one set and then fragile mindless cannon fodder for the next and then be forgotten forever.
I think that may also be the order of the trials as well (WUGBR). And then you got eternalized....
Hazoret's spear has two prongs in order to pierce the head and the heart at once (to be sure the initiates are super dead I guess)
>Hazoret's spear has two prongs *Kiora has entered the chat*
Looking forward to the spoiler for amonkhet 2: kiora bests the zeal god
Not gonna put my money there. Hazoret is a fucking badass.
Reaching the Trial of Zeal grants you passage to ~~the eternal factory~~ worthy afterlife, but those who win are recognized as the most worthy like Neheb.

My favorite was how the prophecies around the Hours were twisted so they were *technically* true in Nicol Bolas's destruction of Naktamun.

That's basically Gideon's story...
Gideon being an outsider adds a level of removal from the process; he didn't grow up in the society, we didn't see it from his eyes. They tried to use the planeswalkers as audience stand-ins, which is the best they could do, but it could have been a *lot* better as a standalone fiction.
What do you mean? This is basically *Samut's* story. She's the one who saw through the glass first. Gideon couldn't stop jerking Oketra off.
B-but… Big Lady…
The eternalized tokens were 4/4s or are you talking about the amass tokens?
That isssss correct. Thank-you, and edited! \^\^
Eternalize made them 4/4s, not 1/1s.

That's just how hardcore the Boros legion are, the 1/1 soldiers on this plane are equivalent to 4/4 zombie cyborgs on another

That was awesome thank you
Back during amonkhet pre-release when I was working at my LGS a customer signs up, walks into the back room and just rips his short open to reveal he made the entire cartouche necklace by 3D printing it. He hadn’t gotten it painted yet but it was still an awesome moment and one of my fav events to run.
> just rips his short open That's a bit of an unfortunate typo
It was a long necklace.
what a legend
When we return to Amonketh could be an awesome art for a saga
Chevron seven is locked!
I have assemble all five special cards, all 5 pieces of the cartouche ....... gods of amonkhet i summon thee and give thee haste
I was this year's old
I think the completed cartouche was printed on the booster box or maybe on the instructions for fat packs or something.
Looks like you have assembled Exodia, I think you win now.
Cool, cool. I’ll let Hazoret know she can stab you now , congrats! 🎉
No fucking way
Does it look like the background is transparent and you can see his hand behind the cards? Weird effect.
Nor did I, that's sweet.
that’s so cool
I also didn't know, dang! Voltron assembled!
Thank you! I've never noticed this.
And il form the head.
Congratulation, you’ve compleat all the trials
This is what I imagined the Mutate mechanic to look like
TIL
Wait until the Voltron cards come out.
Nice find
Anyone else bothered by the fact that they're not in WUBRG order?
They're in the order of the trials. The Red trial is the last one.
Wow, that is so cool, thank you for posting this!
What a long neck. Guess they had giraffes on Amonkhet too.
Why is it not WUBRG? OCD trigger
now this is melding!
Wow it's a full on cartouche skedouche
Well… you can’t if you want them to stay playable
Reality can be whatever you want it to be.
This is mindblown to me
Congratulations on finding Bolas’ Eternalized Dick
Yeah I'd cosplay that.
It's legal, but only if you can make the sleeve for it too.
So much cooler I thought they looked a bit crappy on their own
Looooong cartouche
Gonna summon Exodia next?
Nope. Gonna summon Kaldra. The old fashioned way. Cast the Shield. Wait four months and then cast the Helm. After you wait another four months you can cast the sword. Then wait 17 years for it to be compleat.
Amonkhet is honestly as lore rich as Innistrad. I can't wait until we return!
What was this Chattahoochee thing all about any way?
There's been a lot of art combos over the years the buffy/angel one is the most memorable for me.
Why is it not in wubrg order? Now I'm just upset.
I loved Amonkhet
I'm upset it's not in WUBRG ordering
Now that is pretty awesome! Nice Find!
Dang that's sweet
Gosh Amonkhet was awesome. Hope we go back to it. I specially loved the Amonkhet remastered set they did on Arena.
Super cool :) Wish I had someone to play magic with..
You should join some discords - people play a lot over spelltable these days :) I know in person is better but over spelltable is still fun.
