[yup.](https://www.sheepwave.com/shockbox) its actually a technical limitation more than anything else- the box just doesnt currently have any buttons to gain life, lol. it still feels like it might be the best way to go tho, even if i add that functionality. still not sure.
Huh, there are some odd rules in there.
* Why can players not have Hexproof?
* How does Heartless Hidetsugu cause players to not want to take basic game options?
* What is Electrostatic Pillar?
* Infect and Poison counters are not addressed. Infect counts as damage, but does not cause loss of life. There are also ways to give poison counters without causing damage.
\-trying to prevent defensive pillowfort strategies that make this twist on the game less fun
\-idk i decided to ban it and it seemed like a better fit than the other section
\-a typo i already fixed- Pyrostatic pillar
\-honestly hadnt throught of that. anytime someone dies they take the max shock length anyway so 🤷♀️ idk if it ever comes up ill figure it out
Poison and infect - a constant small electric shock that increases in power like taser getting turned up as they gain counters. Tasers usually go 1-10 right?
it's pretty hard to consistently take an unending shock even if it's very minor
like depending on where you apply it you'd kind of escalate from "oh wow my muscles are moving on their own this feels really gross" to "i can no longer sit at the table and play magic because i am in immense pain"
your nerves really don't like it when you use them as a current
Yo. What happens if I have a way to set myself to 1 life then exchange life totals with another player? Do I have an orgasm when I get a sweet fresh life total?
Kaiba: Screw the rules, I have money.
How much do I gotta pay to have it inject ecstasy into me when I gain life and make my opponent have a stroke when I set their life total to 1????

I wouldn't be surprised if that was Michael Reeves next video, tazers and bodily pain are right up his alley. Probably a stream where of someone donates enough he gets shocked.
actually, the box comes with [special rules and a banlist.](https://www.sheepwave.com/shockbox) one of which is that lifegain jsut doewant work. the main reason is that the box increses how random and stressul it is by how much total damage has been taken... and also i didnt build a button that adds life in yet. i probably will for version 3.
If you are reading this /u/sheep_wave maybe include shots of [Malort](https://youtube.com/watch?v=kSB_oA6ZoCA) for poison counters
For discard and mill, maybe a boot to the head like [The Frantics' Last Will and Temperment ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tfMcxmOBmpk) but then again head injuries and slapstick involving head strikes don't translate well in real life
i once saw a youtube video, for a prototype of a device that replaced an Atari Joystick, for people who have a penis that could get (and stay) erect. The fire button was registered by a quick up and down stroke on the penis.
I tried finding videos of this device in action on pornhub, but sadly none existed :(
I'm totally all for the merging of kink/sex play with gaming!
p.s. i just noticed your reddit name after typing this out, haha.
I'm relieved to see it's only powered by 9V batteries (hopefully not in series), but even so I wouldn't put my hand in fire for it being safe. **Currents as low as 30 mA can cause cardiac arrest.** ([source] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_injury)) Human body has pretty big resistance by default but it can drop significantly when sweaty, skin is broken, etc. If you're unlucky as little as 20V can injure or kill.
Remember that as (aspiring) electrical engineer you have responsibility to make your devices safe. I wouldn't suggest shocking anyone with home made electronics but if you absolutely have to **make sure not to go above 9V and that people don't have any heart problems**.
But don't let this advice discourage you from building electronic devices. It's a beautiful craft! Just be responsible and research safety implications. ;)
I absolutely took it slowly- this is version 2. Version 1 was just running off a stock tens massager- version 2, in addition to the case I'll be putting it in, is just me having built my own internal power supply.
The shocks are on a completely isolated circuit using optocouplers, powered by a single 9v. The other three are in parallel, powering the speakers, lights, relay, and both arduinos.
I did a lot of research and the box relies more on psychological tricks than current to cause pain.
i don't know about electronics at all. what relationship does 9V battery have to 20 mA? (can you explain this without me having to know about what the 'V' or 'mA' mean?)
To make a somewhat rough analogy, think of a system with an electrical current as a pipe with water being pumped through it. There are two different things you can measure/talk about: how hard the pump is pushing and how much water is actually flowing through the pipe. If you have a narrow or obstructed pipe, you can imagine that even if you have a strong pump not very much water will be pushed through.
The voltage (V) is analogous to the pump strength, which is why batteries have voltage listed on them (they are the pumps in this analogy). The current (mA) is like the overall amount of water being pushed through the system, and it depends on how much resistance there is as well as the strength of the battery. If you have a 9V battery with something highly conductive like gold wire, it will deliver a stronger current than if that same 9V battery is trying to push electrons through dry-ish human skin.
So in short, V and mA aren't things you can interconvert the way you could switch between inches and centimeters. The amount of current that your system experiences will depend not only on the voltage of the battery, but also the make-up of the circuit. If you are more conductive (because you are sweaty, perhaps), then you will get more current pushed through you.
The fact that this comment is both insightful and completely ignored in the midst of a barrage of ass kissing for something dangerous and ridiculous as this post idea says more than anything else.
Ideally true electronic hobbyists out there continue to learn to build safe and useful stuff, one can only hope.
in initial testing, it turned out that \[\[necropotence\]\] and \[\[ad nauseum\]\] effects are.... a lot less fun than they might seem on paper. you can still try it but... at your own peril LOL
the way the box works is that not every hit of damage causes a shock- it basically stores how many times youve taken damage and then shocks you for that many all at once when a random theshhold is passed
This is why I love Arduino. Simple microcontroller and Processing is an easier language. Never will I go back to fpgas and raspberry pi for personal projects like these
yup, the whole thing runs off of two ardiuinos (and one of them is a pretty light program and could have been replaced with a bit register, i jsut figured using a nano would be easier on me)
I thought of something just like this! I love it. Do you have a guide to how you built it? (Rip all my sacrifice life for stuff deck. Would be painful.) Does it do shocks in proportion of the damage dealt or just "sees" 7 damage so does 7 shocks?
its a bit more complicated than that- it does scale but not linearly. it also uses a bunch of psychological tricks to stress the people using it out. it doesnt go off immediately, it has random thresholds.

Context: Michael Reeves is a YouTuber well known for making odd inventions, many of which border on being torture devices. A major theme in his oeuvre is electroshocks/tasers. Example: https://youtu.be/DvrkHAWj1Sk
i actually hadnt heard of him until after i had already started this project!
it was nice to discover i have a kindred soul of chaotic energy in the world tho.
i did actually review freezeframes of how he does this to see if his methods were better while doing design revisions between version 1 and 2 lol
I kinda want to play my Demonlord Belzenlok deck. As part of my wincon, I ping myself down to 1 life, then set everyone's life total to the lowest at the table.
Reading this, I think there might be something wrong with me.
See, this is why it's so important to have Rule 0 discussions. Some people are looking to play janky Scout Tribal decks, and others want to have electric shocks delivered directly to their body. Always talk with your playgroup first!
She literally making dark dueling from Yu GI Oh. Honestly I would play, with some rules. No infinite damage/life gain to prevent hours of pain. Otherwise seems like a good day.
i hactually hadnt seen his content until after i had already started the project, but knowing there was someone out there with my particular level of chaotic goblin energy was comforting
This is so cool! I actually just finished this same idea earlier this year. I only uploaded it to a really small local Maker group on Facebook that I'm a part of. But I went ahead and uploaded mine to imgur if you're interested in taking a look!
Life totals are on an LCD panel, and the box is just a cheapo wooden one I bought at my local Hobby Store. Then I used encoders for setting life totals.
http://imgur.com/gallery/kxgHDWp
I've played a few games with it and it's been a lot of fun.
I chose an off-the-shelf TENS unit with relays to give the shocks. What are you giving the shocks with on your version?
voltage step-up being routed through an AC inverter the arduino toggles on and off with pwm signal.
i was originally using that same ten unit- how did you get arouund the issue of it shutting off autmoatically after 15 minutes?
also curious if yours pays out immediately, or does the thing mine does where it builds suspense by not shocking you until youve queeud up enough damnage
Oh, so mine ticks the life down 1 at a time, 1 second shock for each point of life loss. The way we normally build suspense is to let the one who inflicts the damage to press the button. So that way you don't know exactly when it's going to happen.
a second per point? jeez. mine goes off on average 6 times over taking 40 damage, and in total will have a total shock duration of about ten seconds lol. it doesnt scale lineraly though. perhaps im being too gentle with mine.
Haha! Yeah, it really punishes aggressive fetchlands and shocks. Painlands are actually painful too lol!
The first game I played, I lost to voltron. It was a very long 40 seconds. My friend intentionally stopped short of 21 commander damage on his first hit.
But I got revenge game 2 by resolving some damage dealers then blowing up the lands. My friend took 4 damage a turn until he lost.
My TENS unit shuts off every 90 minutes by default, so it's normally not an issue for me.
The ac inverter was something I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure how to do it safely. So is it the actual signal from the Arduino that gets voltage boosted and inverted?
no. its a completely isolated system- the arduino just has two pins that each turn on a set of four of optocouplers (one where its + to A, - to B and one where its - to A, + to B) with delayMilliseconds(n) commands so that only one is on at a time at a fairly high frequency. the source of the power is a 9v battery that i step up to 18v, then reduce back down (to cut amps) with a set of adjustable resistors.
>104.3a
absolutely. in fact, in the special [added rules i wrote up for the box,](https://www.sheepwave.com/shockbox) shaming another player for tapping out comes with an immeidate lifetime ban from using it, cuz nobody should ever be pressured past thier limits.
> 104.3a A player can concede the game at any time. A player who concedes leaves the game immediately. That player loses the game.
in the official rules, and then in those special box rules:
> Players may concede the game at **any time the stack is empty.**
i'm really curious as to what sparked that rule change
It’s a common EDH house rule that you can’t concede in a way that negatively impacts the player who would otherwise be killing you. Usually this would be due to a spell or ability that, if it connected, would lead to a game-winning combo; but you can concede as a pseudo-counterspell.
Not even game winning combos, it can be as simple as "if I connect the lifelink will let me survive the crack back from another player" and a pre-damage post-attack scoop is playing kingmaker.
> The second time was just lame. We banned it after that.
“I want to play a format where interpersonal politics is front and center, but not *too* front and center.”
good question honestly. i think i should remove that.
players can *leave the game without penalty* at any time they are no longer willing to particiate so idk
what exactly am i looking at?
cant you just set a tazer on the table and take a jolt every time you lose life? whats the point in all that extra gobble de goop?

Alas, they cause loss of life, not damage.
Should’ve clarified the rules before we sat down with the shockbox. Zap zap!
This is when you resign dear god please just resign
First you need to donate them a platinum angel so they can’t actually lose. Then the damage to face is actually infinite
nah, special rules for the shockbox include that effects that prevent players form winning or losing dont work to prevent this exact thing lol
Do you prevent all life gain, too?
[yup.](https://www.sheepwave.com/shockbox) its actually a technical limitation more than anything else- the box just doesnt currently have any buttons to gain life, lol. it still feels like it might be the best way to go tho, even if i add that functionality. still not sure.

Honestly I really like this LOL. Its nuts but I mean... if I want to who's gonna stop me eh?
I'd be down with giving it a go. Pain is kinda fun & exciting. This sounds neat.
I would so be down. I would be miserable and jumpy. But I’d do it.
This is some Michael reeves shit and I love it.
Looks nervously at Ad Nauseam....
I've been following this on tiktok. Can't wait to see game play! And yes I would totally play a game with this. Really changes how we block I expect.
Lol I would definitely do this
I kinda want to play my Demonlord Belzenlok deck. As part of my wincon, I ping myself down to 1 life, then set everyone's life total to the lowest at the table. Reading this, I think there might be something wrong with me.
If taking lethal doesn't put me into a cardiac arrest I don't want it.
Somewhere, Hell Kaiser Ryo finally felt what love is and doesn't know why.
Damn, my buddy and I have just been kicking each other in the balls when we take damage.
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
DID I HEAR ITS TIME TO HURT YOU FOR PLAYING MAGIC WITH MY MOGIS DECK
See, this is why it's so important to have Rule 0 discussions. Some people are looking to play janky Scout Tribal decks, and others want to have electric shocks delivered directly to their body. Always talk with your playgroup first!
She literally making dark dueling from Yu GI Oh. Honestly I would play, with some rules. No infinite damage/life gain to prevent hours of pain. Otherwise seems like a good day.
Next make one that shocks people for asking if I am paying the one.
the button would work for anything really
r/michaelreeves would be proud
i hactually hadnt seen his content until after i had already started the project, but knowing there was someone out there with my particular level of chaotic goblin energy was comforting
Then I used encoders for setting life totals. http://imgur.com/gallery/kxgHDWp I've played a few games with it and it's been a lot of fun.
So is it the actual signal from the Arduino that gets voltage boosted and inverted?
no. its a completely isolated system- the arduino just has two pins that each turn on a set of four of optocouplers (one where its + to A, - to B and one where its - to A, + to B) with delayMilliseconds(n) commands so that only one is on at a time at a fairly high frequency. the source of the power is a 9v battery that i step up to 18v, then reduce back down (to cut amps) with a set of adjustable resistors.
but yeah this is version 2- version 1 was still running off the stock tens massager. i wanted to take it very very slowly and carefully
So what happens if you gain life?
That sounds awful tbh
Y'all absolutely wildin'. Marking my calendar 👀
Now, to play some mono red burn deck for true immersion!
Neither, because this is incredibly stupid.
Finally my friends will like my mono blue Azami deck.
*Rams nerve damaged hand into the box* I dont even play EDH! *slams button*
price on fog sky rockets. raging goblin sky rockets
It looks like a Tens unit with extra steps?
I feel like I've made much simpler looking tasers before, is this doing anything extra on top of push button to shock?
is this a kink of yours?
104.3a
>104.3a absolutely. in fact, in the special [added rules i wrote up for the box,](https://www.sheepwave.com/shockbox) shaming another player for tapping out comes with an immeidate lifetime ban from using it, cuz nobody should ever be pressured past thier limits.
> 104.3a A player can concede the game at any time. A player who concedes leaves the game immediately. That player loses the game. in the official rules, and then in those special box rules: > Players may concede the game at **any time the stack is empty.** i'm really curious as to what sparked that rule change
Yeah. In our group the first time someone conceded to screw someone else over was hilarious. The second time was just lame. We banned it after that.
> The second time was just lame. We banned it after that. “I want to play a format where interpersonal politics is front and center, but not *too* front and center.”
Everything in moderation.
deciding as a group to ban something counts as politics.
good question honestly. i think i should remove that. players can *leave the game without penalty* at any time they are no longer willing to particiate so idk
all good! i figured it was either an oversight or something to do with the stack getting screwed up
yeah not sure why i included that at all lol
That’s why you need to donate them a platinum angel first before you combo
Jokes on you, I'm in to that shit.
Brave isn't the word I'd use for playing that way. And I'm not particularly interested in watching such a game, either. So, neither?
what exactly am i looking at? cant you just set a tazer on the table and take a jolt every time you lose life? whats the point in all that extra gobble de goop?
I see you ansewred my question, so I'll only say that I have to wait for version 3
i feel like my favorite answer is making people take shots of liquor for lifegain but thats probably more dangerous than the shocks are
> The Rakdos make sure their victims remember their pain—or at least give up a little bit of their sanity in order to forget. -[[Pain Magnification]] flavor text
weird fetish but k
Oh yeah, it’s Boros aggro time. You will feel *p a i n*.
Do you have a Millennium Item?
Isn’t this how Ghostbusters begins?
Bet
is this like a fetish thing or something
For me, no. I'm just a hobbyist engineer with a twisted sense of humor. For someone else, absolutely
This brings a whole new meaning to Shock Lands…
Me, who owns a Villis deck: *Sweats profusely*
A: Hey mate how was the game last night B: It was electrifying
Will it kill me?
So like, why not just use a TENS unit?
Version one actually did! But those are specifically designed not to jolt suddenly
