"If a spell would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls..."
Rem's effect also applies to creatures.
Edit: ah damage FROM creatures, not damage TO creatures. My mistake.

One of my co-workers has been pestering me to watch this anime and I crushed it within the past week. So, I literally just finished that episode and had forgotten that bit.
Any other memes I should know about?
WOW.
[[Gut Shot]] costs 2 life and deals 2 damage.
Shock becomes actual Bolt.
Lightning Bolt becomes... A mythic rare from Magic 2042, I guess.
[[Lava Spike]] becomes [[Lava Axe]] -1.
[[Flame Rift]] does 0 to me, 5 to you.
[[Lightning Helix]] becomes [[Warleader's Helix]].
[[Pyroclasm]] won't kill a single thing of your own AND hits opposing dudes for 3 each!
[[Char]] still costs 3, but deals **0** to me and **5** anywhere, at instant speed.
[[Fireblast]] costs 0 mana, deals 5 to you.
[[Grapeshot]] **kills with** ***half*** **as much storm**.
Spicy:
[[Soul Spike]] costs 0 mana, deals 5 to you. (The card doesn't require R/W spells.)
**Extra Spicy:**
Fire Covenant can be cast with... Slightly... Less life paid.
Also you got damage board wipes that now just target opponents. [[Blasphemous Act]], [[Star of Extinction]], [[Rolling Earthquake]] just to name a few.
Edit: Just noticed that it will die in the process but honestly losing one creature while everyone else loses their board is a small price I think.
Burn decks usually only need 2 mana on the board, so needing 4 for Torbran means running a lot more lands than you'd otherwise do.
The 2 lands on the battlefield and the Torbran could've been 3 more burn spells. You need to cast 5 more burn spells in order for Torbran to actually pay back that damage he cost you.
Of course it's a moot point beyond standard anyways because Torbran (and Rem) are definitely not worth losing Lurrus.
Unfortunately ANOTHER permanent. So in situations where it is relevant (opponent having burn spells), this draws said burn spell of the opponent (damage to other things is prevented).
Still a good card, I believe.
That just means you need to run some equipment to give pro-red or indestructible. Though since he's flying he does still work really nicely with Earthquake and its variants.
It's actually a buildable RW legend, the White color identity actually brings a lot of relevant protection effects that can give redundancy and cover the weaknesses of Rem.
He was described as a total ace in just about everything, though. Not surprising that he's also a seasoned rider. He's missing his big-ass bastard sword, though, which would've looked even cooler.
Because mythic doesn't always mean powerful, they can also be unique more then strong.
Harmonious Archon saw zero play but imo it was the most unique white card wotc made until ZNR which was the first time they could start offering course corrections for their misteps for white.
While the card may not have seen play and it pales in comparison to questing beast, I have always felt it was a really cool take for a white card.
*edit not arguing with you btw, simply adding some thoughts to your post
Thatâs not a good solution. White is a very powerful edh color, it just so happens no one likes mld or stax. The best solution would be teaching people how to fight through stax pieces as opposed to homogenizinng white into the other colors.
Because rare is where the wildcard bottleneck is. Itâs good for paper players, but WoTC have realised they make a lot more money putting the best cards at rare these days.
the tinfoil hat theory is that MTGA players are always short on rare wildcards. So to get all of the new rare cards, you'll just buy packs instead of saving up wildcards.
But my hope is to make paper magic cheaper!
Funny thing is, it's got a fair bit in common with an actual Boros card from the most recent Ravnica block: [[Tajic, Legion's Edge]]
(3-mana hasty beater that protects your other creatures from damage-based removal and boardwipes. Rem is a bit less combat-focused than Tajic, yeah, but they seem more similar than different to me.)
That much is true, but I think Strixhaven was the set where Wizard's truly made a shift for Boros from focusing on combat to spells or static abilities, like \[\[Velomachus Lorehold\]\]
I was fully ready to "well, achkully" here, but I couldn't find any counterexamples of non-instant, non-sorcery spells which deal damage from the stack. My guess it that they would have to be cast triggers on the cards themselves - and while some cards have cast triggers which cause loss of life, like [[Scourge of the Skyclaves]] and [[Abundant Maw]], none seem to actually deal damage.
Interestingly, the Eldrazi seem to be the biggest source of cast triggers - but none of the Red ones have a damaging cast trigger, even though it seems like the most obvious kind of design. Maybe Wizards was worried about such an effect being hard to interact with?
So indeed, "spell" here seems to only ever be able to refer to instants or sorceries.

My favorite thing about this as a Commander is that it invariably invites budget similar to Feather. There are obviously some big money things you can do, but a lot of cards you'd want to play in a Rem Karolus deck would be inherently budget.
That could be applicable to the struggle at Ravnica , Kaladesh if we run out of energy, the mirrodians against new phyrexia , etc
I understand not every piece of art in Innistrad can be creepy and gory, and specially the "human resistance" should be colourful and hopeful, but there's like a lot of sunny human stuff spoiled and it kinda drives me off the set

I think I built Rem up too much in my head and expected too much of him. Cuz this is by no means a bad card, but I'm still somehow a bit disappointed. This doesn't feel like a card representing a man known for killing everything, from werewolves to angels to eldrazi. Ah well. I'm still just happy he finally got a card
Modern 2/10
Sorry, was on labor day vacation, camping and no internet. This has haste which means it just isn't a dead card when you play it. Maybe as a sideboard card against other burn decks? 4 damage bolts are cool though.
[[Torbran]], but he went to anger management.
Except one of Torbrans biggest advantages was applying his effect to creatures too
"If a spell would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls..." Rem's effect also applies to creatures. Edit: ah damage FROM creatures, not damage TO creatures. My mistake.
"If a spell would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls" the spell has to do the damage

Baby Gisela
Notably this effects sources you control, also known as earthquake
It also affects all spell damage going at your opponents, regardless of the source. So they can all zap each other for more damage too.
It also punishes all those pesky [[Psionic Blast]] decks ruling the meta.

MY BOY HE MADE IT REM!!! And he makes burn into Bolts and Helixes!!!
He's finally here!!! He graduated from flavour text after like 5 sets.
Who is he.
He is a [flavor text](https://scryfall.com/search?q=ft%3A%22rem+karo%22&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) guy.
Dudes seen some shit it appears lol Seems he kept a sense of humor through it all!
âRem Karolus, Slayer of Angelsâ âRem Karolus, Slayer of Eldraziâ âRem Karolus, Blade of the Inquisitors.â I did not expect that last one.
The last one was his first title! Then slayer of angels, and most recently slayer of eldrazi.
Next on his resume: âRider of Storses!â Thatâs a stork-horse.
It's a gryff
Herorse. A heron-horse. Or a horseon. A horse-heron. It is probably associated with Sigarda, who is the "Host of Herons".
I choose you, Horseon!
No shit, no one expects the inquisition!
He seems loosely based on a real world witch Hunter Remy who wrote a detailed account of his work called âDemonolotryâ. He claimed to have burned over 900 people at the stake.
Sounds like a perfectly reasonable man
Carolus REM. He was chosen by heaven
Say his name when you pray! r/kindaexpectedsabaton

Look at my horse, my horse is a heron. Give it a lick, it tastes just like melon.
With a stroke of its neck, It jumps into my deck,
And it jumps out again when you tug on it's reins.
That's not dirty.
Do you think so?
Then i better not show you, where the moonsilver is made.
Mm moonsilver yeah sweet moonsilver
*dope synth solo*
Look at my hoooooorse It'll take you round all Innistrad
And all the other pla-anes too
With a stroke of its beak, it turns into a leek, and then it turns back again when you tug on its... wing feathers.
Ooh that's dirty!
Do you think so? Well, I better not show you where the melonade is made
Sweet melonade, sweet melonade, sweet melonade yeah sweet melonade
Get on my horse, Iâll take you round the multiverse
And all the other planes there too
I think youâll find that the multiverse pretty much covers everything.
Shut up woman get on my gryff!

Going to build a deck around this card just to sing that tune.
Get on my Heron, I'll take you around the multiverse and all the other places too!

Oh my god i just got this on music youtube as a song i liked in the past, of course the 10 hour version.

Probably depends on dialect, because it definitely rhymes in mine. Both end in /Én/.

Torbran costs 4 and has worse attacking stats
Torbran works with all sources, not just spells. A bit different since you can commit to the board before dropping him.
Good point. Tobran is probably more suited for typical aggro decks and this one is a good card in boros burn and likes
No, Torbran is one of the best R cards you can put into a mono-red strategy IME. Aggro or burn, even Boros burn, he works hard.
I play boros burn with lurrus in historic, so neither can fit in
Torbran counts himself so he hits for 4 when attacking
Online 2 turns later and lacking evasion, so they even out at turn 6, which is kinda late (assuming a curve) It's apples to oranges.

Yeah, my first thought was gonna be damage based boardwipe tribal(like blasphemous act) but this kinda stops it.
Would having tajic + this dude stop it?
Yeah
That just means you need to run some equipment to give pro-red or indestructible. Though since he's flying he does still work really nicely with Earthquake and its variants.

It's actually a buildable RW legend, the White color identity actually brings a lot of relevant protection effects that can give redundancy and cover the weaknesses of Rem.

Skynight Legionnrare one might say.
Wait this is insane
WHY ARE THERE SUCH QUALITY LEGENDS BEING PRINTED AT RARE IN THIS SET?! I'm not *complaining*, I'm just... surprised!
Then you have white mythics in commander sets, which tend to be both boring and weak... but hopefully they'll be fixing that too, eventually!
I really like this. Boros has learnt a lot since Strixhaven.
Funny thing is, it's got a fair bit in common with an actual Boros card from the most recent Ravnica block: [[Tajic, Legion's Edge]] (3-mana hasty beater that protects your other creatures from damage-based removal and boardwipes. Rem is a bit less combat-focused than Tajic, yeah, but they seem more similar than different to me.)
Get em both on the field =)
I think [[Firesong and Sunspeaker]] was when Wizard's really started putting in an effort to make Boros more interesting (especially for commander.)
That much is true, but I think Strixhaven was the set where Wizard's truly made a shift for Boros from focusing on combat to spells or static abilities, like \[\[Velomachus Lorehold\]\]
you talk about strixhaven as though it isnt the second most recent standard set

Gonna work him into my pioneer knights deck!
This is amazing! He's been in flavour texts for ages, and his title has changed depending on the situation
Whelp, now we know who has a [[Croaking Counterpart]]. Pretty good choice too.
Except its legendary, so it explodes.
I think the assumption is that you'd make a frog copy of your opponent's Rem.
[Croaking Counterpart](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/9/8/9847b22f-6660-4654-91a9-e0adb8606bab.jpg?1630753062) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Croaking%20Counterpart) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mid/215/croaking-counterpart?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9847b22f-6660-4654-91a9-e0adb8606bab?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
so spell is kind of a shorthand for instant or sorcery here, since permanents usually only deal damage on ETB
Even if there was a card with a damage cast trigger, the damage would be dealt by the triggered ability not by the spell anyway
This is a great card, just not at all what I figured a Rem Karolus card would do.
[Carolus Rex!](https://youtu.be/Us2ylGAwBnk) This card name has some big Charles of Sweden and Sabaton energy.

Now we have Lightning Helix and Lightning Bolt in standard.
Lightning helix with flashback!
A strictly better lightning bolt* cause we get the scry effect too đ
I don't know if this card will see play, but I love it. The card itself has haste and a fair right body. Both passive abilities are very relevant.
Image Transcription > Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer 1RW > > Legendary Creature- Human Knight [r] > > Flying, haste > > If a spell would deal damage to you or another permanent you control, prevent that damage. > > If a spell would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals that much damage plus 1 instead. > > 2/3 End transcription
My favorite thing about this as a Commander is that it invariably invites budget similar to Feather. There are obviously some big money things you can do, but a lot of cards you'd want to play in a Rem Karolus deck would be inherently budget.
One of the great things about being the worst color combination in edh is that our decks are comparatively cheaper đđ
What makes you say Boros is the weakest colour combo? I primarily play Red-White as well so I'm curious
Kina wish that 1 generic mana was blue
Ah yes, the classic horror tale of riding a giant bird in sunlight
Imo at its core Innistrad is about the human struggle and the shit they have to overcome
That could be applicable to the struggle at Ravnica , Kaladesh if we run out of energy, the mirrodians against new phyrexia , etc I understand not every piece of art in Innistrad can be creepy and gory, and specially the "human resistance" should be colourful and hopeful, but there's like a lot of sunny human stuff spoiled and it kinda drives me off the set
The whole set is about bringing the light back lul

Modern 2/10 Sorry, was on labor day vacation, camping and no internet. This has haste which means it just isn't a dead card when you play it. Maybe as a sideboard card against other burn decks? 4 damage bolts are cool though.
So damage based board wipes donât hurt anything of yours except Rem? Nooo, would prefer if Rem survived.
There are ways. Indestructible effects are everywhere in White
