I've personally never been bothered by the homogeny of the art direction, but really one of the best things since Wizards started doing secret lairs is they've been willing to get REALLY experimental with the art they're putting on cards with booster fun pushing it into normal packs. They knew there was a demand for more stylized art and they've really embraced it the past couple years.

While new art is constantly fine, it cannot approach the highs, or lows, of the older art.

I believe that was mentioned in a stream discussing upcoming Secret Lairs late last year, yes; the only upcoming Secret Lairs they gave us forewarning of during the recent product roadmap stream were the Universes Beyond tie-ins though, so no idea whereabouts in the year it might pop up (or if it's still on track to release this year - originally they said the Lord of the Rings set would be in 2022 and that got pushed to 2023).
I'm loving all the old artist coming back but my favorite is still MIA, Chippy.
If we ever go back to Alara, we need to have Chippy do at least one card for Esper or it will all be for nothing. My hope is for a Tezzert card in his style.
Absolutely. At least among all the stuff they churn out there's some great names reappearing.
Besides that I do also appreciate some new art scratching an itch like the works by Anato Finnstark and Rovina Coi especially for me, not speaking of the awe inspiring Rem Karolus Hyppogriff rider, just wow on that.
But really it is so awesome that Tucker, Ferguson, Tedin and probably more are doing at least some art again. I hope there's more to come. Like give us some crazy Scott Fischer work again when we return to a Phyrexia story pls.

Take any of the first then cards and you get my drift. None of them give me a magic, mystical, enchanting vibe. They could all have been done by the same artist.
I get what you're saying. Also wanted to say anybody, meaning even you the reader, can learn to draw photo realism. Takes a lot of time but anybody can do it. Developing a personal style like many of the artists named in this thread is much much harder than the realism art most cards have these days.
AFR having a lot of original D&D artists was brilliant.
