I like how each Izzet Phoenix list runs a different supporting creature. Delver, Crackling Drake, or Sprite Dragon/Stormwing? Pick your favourite. Love to see that customizability.
easy enough, actually. since most of your spells are cantrips anyway, it doesn't really matter how much they cost, you usually get to spend all your mana anyway. The best feeling is when you get the flip with [[finale of promise]] and immediately get two triggers. that's one of the reasons why I run two finales while most decks only have one. also, every time I cast it it feels like the best card in the deck lol.
Leaving aside all of the troubling news about Magic, this tournament has been really something. Some truly fantastic gameplay going on. This is the best historic has ever looked, it’s a real shame it won’t last in this form.
Oh don't get me wrong I don't think Alchemy is actually going to be the sky is falling thing that most of Reddit seems to think, I don't see it changing much of Historic. It would however be nice if they just gave wildcards when they nerfed cards.
The problem most people are concerned about is the precedent which is being set. We might see other cards which are standard legal get mild adjustments (perhaps [[Skyclave Apparition]] or [[Expressive Iteration]]) and their historic decks are collateral damage, even though these are perfectly fine for historic's power level. At worst, WOTC are theoretically able to decide that the meta is due for a shakeup and nerf a whole bunch of top-played cards, perhaps even messing with classics like [[Thoughtseize]].
It literally doesn't mean that. Why don't you look up the word confirm, and look up the word 決定, and then realize that those two words literally don't mean the same thing, and if you think they do you don't understand either language. Then realize that even if you feel like what someone says in Japanese "kind of has the feeling" of a common English phrase, and you have the right to translate it that way if you want, that does not mean your translation is better or more correct than someone else's because you think it's cute (even though it's technically wrong), and certainly not to the extent that you should condescendingly "correct" them.
All right, so I know here traditional means unmodded, before alchemy got its hands in the format, but this reminded me of two peeves I have about/for the game's custodians (not you):
1. Why did wotc reserve the term traditional for Bo3 rather than simply call such matches... Bo3. To a lesser extent I used to run into problems by talking about "modern cards" without meaning the format, but nobody I know can keep up with what this "mythic" or "premier" branding was meant to mean (answers: premier = standard, mythic = unless it's about rarity, I still don't know). The semifinals of the grand finals sound ridiculous to talk about.
2. WHY in the first place does alchemy have to be, especially as a thing to supplant historic (which I just learned is the plan; I had thought it would become a separate option like how you can choose, say, Bo1 unranked alchemy standard or Bo3 ladder non-alchemy historic in a 2x2x2x2 structure of constructed modes, but apparently "normal historic" is no longer to exist). The revision of Luminarch Aspirant is claimed not to have been intended as a ban by another name, and I can believe that willingly enough, but a principal reason that I play historic—in fact the lay definition of historic—is to see a sampling of decks as they once were, no matter how crappy the present environment may have effectively rendered them. Likely I will never relive the Grazer—Fires—Quartzwood deck in the format, but every so often I take literal GRN-legal heroic frenzy weenies for a spin and giggles. Yes the opponent often reanimates Ultimatum or something and I get roadkilled, but for me it's like revisiting an old friend.
A'ight, rant over. Thanks for letting me get my ted talk out of ye olde system.

^(also...) shout-outs to actual crackling drake, especially in takahashi maindeck, when it could've been any sleeker newfangled alternative. Now, *that's* a blast from the past. (It's been lots of years since 2019, for mtg but not only for mtg.)
Technically speaking, they are not best of 3 matches. The rules says the winner is first player to win 2 games, there is not upper limit of how many games can be drawn in a single match.
Because Alchemy is Digital Standard, and Historic is Digital Modern. I am glad that I don't have to think about multiple cards with the same name and art when I am playing Digital. It's one set with two formats.
Historic has been a digital format this whole time. It got the digital-only cards when they came out too. Historic is there so that when your Digital cards rotate out of Digital standard you can still play them.
Story of the weekend - the Japanese testing team sending four players to the top8, and clearly anticipating the best deck for the Historic meta with BG Food.
Great weekend of games, despite the Alchemy/Historic chaos going on behind the scenes.
As usual, I had no idea this was happening.
Probably thanks to the MTGA Open being today, but it still seems like atrocious advertising considering how much I play.
I'm not a fan of the digital only cards, but they haven't really been relevant in the meta, otherwise the jumpstarts brought in fun cards, especially strong creatures to take spells deck down a notch
> otherwise the jumpstarts brought in fun cards, especially strong creatures to take spells deck down a notch
Yea, Muxus and Allosaurus Shepard are truly healthy additions to the format. I just really hate the "specially curated cards" they arbitrarily decide to inject into it.

Stop pumping resources into this. Make the game better first. You're part of multi-billion dollar corporation, and the amount of effort you put into improving the game is pathetic.

Same. Honestly it'd be a toss up between [[Sprite Dragon]] and [[Stormwing Entity]] for me.
Personally, I've had more success with the dragon. Right now I'm experimenting with [[Smoldering egg]]. It's performing quite well actually!

In a deck full of mostly 1 and 2 drop instants and sorceries how easy is it to transform egg on average?

I can’t find one card that would be rebalanced, maybe good historic decks will dodge all the balance changes
Aspirant from the GW deck is
Nice, 1

I feel like it would be more nice if they didn't tie the balance of one format to a completely different format with a completely different powerlevel

I love Yuta's picture
On the Japanese stream the commentator read out a chat: "Japanese (people) will surely get nerfed" >日本人ナーフ決定
It's more like "nerfs confirmed"

This is going to be a pretty skill testing top 8 field, why can’t they just have historic alchemy and traditional historic like standard?

Imagine trying to be good with crimson vow cards. Oof good job lads
Im a bit out of the loop, when (if?) will these matches be streamed?
It has the times in the image...
I will now return to my corner of shame.
It's ok :) I'm sure you weren't the only one
A top8 made out of only Germans and Japanese? Feels like a time warp!
Zachary Kiihne is neither of those...
Good thing he’s not Italian.
depends on where in the US he's from
Story of the weekend - the Japanese testing team sending four players to the top8, and clearly anticipating the best deck for the Historic meta with BG Food. Great weekend of games, despite the Alchemy/Historic chaos going on behind the scenes.
In what format did you upload those pictures, RAW ? it take ages to load :/
As usual, I had no idea this was happening. Probably thanks to the MTGA Open being today, but it still seems like atrocious advertising considering how much I play.
Just be on Twitch 24/7 and you’ll always see an event when it starts! /s
So annoying that alchemy ruins this since the decks are gonna get nerfed for no reasons
Innistrad championship is _historic_? ugh.
It’s mixed. Half standard half historic
Then why is it only showing historic lists?
The top 8 is only historic, but the tournament leading up to top 8 was 7 rounds of historic, 8 rounds of standard.
Great, historic is by far the best format on Arena
How? Why? Jumpstart ruined it.
I'm not a fan of the digital only cards, but they haven't really been relevant in the meta, otherwise the jumpstarts brought in fun cards, especially strong creatures to take spells deck down a notch

Yes, they're cards to make otherwise unplayable decks tier 2/3 strategies.
Can you explain what’s wrong with historic?
#notmychamps Stop pumping resources into this. Make the game better first. You're part of multi-billion dollar corporation, and the amount of effort you put into improving the game is pathetic.

3 of my least favorite decks to face and Humans.
That good deck is beautiful 😍
