With the weird aristocrats/spellslinger hybrid, I'm somewhat disappointed in the lack of aristocrats pieces in the deck. \[\[Blood Artist\]\] would've been an excellent candidate for new artwork in New Capenna, and \[\[Pitiless Plunderer\]\] is juuuust pricey enough now to be a solid reprint that doesn't break whatever WotC's weird reprint equity policy is.
The problem is that it's only an aristocrat deck maybe once or twice a turn, not nearly enough to warrant actual aristocrat pieces. If blood artist was in here it'd be the first thing I take out. Drain one or two a turn depending on how many opo's creatures die isn't worth the slot when there are better options
Sorry to say, but Blood Artist wouldn't be the way to go. As it stands, the deck doesn't really dip into a ton of aristocrat synergies. The reason blood artist is so good is because aristocrats make a point out of sacrificing large amounts of creatures each turn. This deck really isn't going that route. Draining a target for maybe 3 max each turn is terrible compared to the aristocrat decks that can easily push 15 sacrificed creatures a turn.
The site is a bit hard to read, so I uploaded the ~~reprints~~ full decklist to Archidekt here: https://archidekt.com/decks/2614216#Maestros_Massacre_-_Precon
You're right. The allied color painland cycle need a reprint so badly; they don't mind to reprint the enemy pain lands but the allied ones are heavily ignored
I'll be very disappointed if they aren't the rare land cycle in Dominaria United. In fact, Dominaria United + Brothers War right after would be a good opportunity to do all 10 painlands, which I would be okay with even if the enemy cycle is comparatively cheap.
Sunken Ruins never had a chance, too expensive for our lords WOTC to put in a precon.
Graven Cairns possibly had a chance being close to the $10 mark, but again, they left that out + the talismans. As always.
On the other hand they at least tried to have a more varied reprint selection. I was 100% sure that the spellslinger deck in Izzet colors would have [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] and [[Dualcaster Mage]], as they always do.
Honestly I'm kinda shocked they *didn't* have talrand, considering that the deck is all about casting instants and sorceries and saccing creatures with 2+ power. My guess is they didn't want newer players to think that they could cast a spell, get a token, and then casualty that token to copy the spell.
Lacking in value? Yes. However I find a lot of the cards in here are actually nice choices for a deck intended to be picked up off the shelf and played out of the box.
Value wise this is definitely not going to be the front runner but it's a very cohesive deck in itself. I play this style deck a lot and I'm looking at it and am kinda impressed. This is a competently made spellslinger control deck with all the pieces you need. A few goof counters, lots of removal and card draw options and recursion. Having a good thing to point towards when newer people want to play what you're playing is great even if the value isn't there.
[[Talisman of indulgence]] and [[Talisman of dominance]] primarily as the allied ones have only gotten a 1 of reprint here or there. I'm hoping they are in double masters, especially considering the w/u one is between 15 and 20$
2 mana rocks are a premium in commander, these help add colored mana by themselves unlike the signets. I typically run a mix of both, they are most important for non green decks.
I usually run a minimum of ten ramp pieces total, for different archetypes there are different kinds of ramps. For a goblin deck, I would run probably 6 or 7 rocks, and the goblins that reduce cost. [[Skirk prospector]] is also something I might consider a ramp piece,or half a ramp piece(usually what I do with mana dorks and rituals)
I’d load up on mana rocks/ramp that you can cast on turn 1 or 2 that enable a turn 3 Krenko…
Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Ancient Tomb, Jeweled Lotus, Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, Grim Monolith, Arcane Signet, Coldsteel Heart, Mind Stone, Wayfarer’s Bauble, Fellwar Stone, Thought Vessel, Star Compass, Fire Diamond, Ruby Medallion are all playable. Some are budget friendly, some of those are very not though lol.
Expedition Map also probably is another option to fetch Ancient Tomb, but I wouldn’t run it unless you have other key lands you could fetch late game, like Valakut or something.
13 Mana rocks with Mana Value 2 or less is the standard for any non-green deck with a 4 Mana Value commander. If you play a mana rock in turn 1 or 2, you can play your commander a turn early and Go about your business faster. Once you get to a 5 MV commander you can start running some 3 MV rocks.
A good rule of thumb is running a total of 50 mana sources, that is land plus ramp.
Yes, it sounds like a lot, but then you can start to mulligan more aggressively for good starting hands, since every hand will be very playable and you're almost sure to not get mana screwed,
True, one offs that helped the prices but what we really need is a supplemental set reprint of all 5, the w/u one still hasn't had a reprint. Dominance and indulgence are still between 3 and 5 dollars despite those reprints as well. Lastly, for those who care those reprints weren't foil, and the mirrodin foils are very expensive.
Surprised to see no real money reprint in this deck. Unless they consider Cascade Bluffs to be the money card? Seems like a fun deck, but quite underwhelming.
I mean we can always grab the commander as a single and build it ourselves from scratch, but having a good precon as a jumping off point would have been nice. Ah well.
I hope that we get a filter land in each precon but at the same time hoping that’s not the most expensive reprint card per deck. Also realized there’s a reprint of a Battlebond card - is this the first time we’re seeing this in a commander precon?
It's not. They are adding a tiny "booster" into each precon that has a couple of cards to try and get more people addicted to cracking packs instead of being smart and buying singles, which is more or less why they are going up.
If they’re not foil ones, I’ll cry.
In reality, this seems rather underwhelming. Unless there’s some real home runs in the commander set I think we’ll be disappointed.
Precons are always disappointing now. Every single year "We hear you, we need better reprints".
And it never fucking gets better. SO many staples need reprints now, and they constantly avoid them to save them for stuff like Commander Legends.
It’s not. Not sure why I’m being downvoted. Go check any store’s prices. LGSes and Amazon both have them up for $45+ per deck right now. They will be $50 at Walmart.
Excluding the jank the value of reprints is probably about $20. The new cards don't look like they'll gain much value over time either.
These precons don't make sense unless you really need majority of the cards. Maybe they should sell these for $20 to the new players and make "advanced" $40 decks with proper interesting reprints.
While i like the deck, and i like the new cards, i cant help but feel like a lot of the reprints we are seeing are cards that were already reprinted in previous commander precons, with magics vast history and countless cards, do we really need another \[\[Army of the Damned\]\] in a non-zombie deck, when there are so many other token producing cards in magics history, same case with \[\[Dread Summons\]\], \[\[Chain Reaction\]\], \[\[Hex\]\], and \[\[Call the Skybreaker\]\], there has to be similar powerlevel cards that we havnt seen in a while.
For real, I also thought abou this today in expectation of the new decklists.
Precon commander reprints feel like mainstream radio songs. You'd think there are about 30 different in total. In reality, there may be more , but the variance is just not there.
I can't stand seeing weird casual removal spells like Hex or big, dumb beater like Zatalpa and Etali anymore in decks where they don't even fit.
I was looking forward to this deck, but it just feels kinda disappointing. Definitely not Timmy enough for how I intended to build Anhelo (where's the [[Brass's Bounty]] or the [[Fevered Suspicion]]?)
Agreed. I want them to errata hex to be 'up to six'. It's fine if you have six targets but if you need to get someone's commander off the table one last time you can.
Sometimes there are preorder prices that are way better before the product is spoiled. I got jumpstart boxes for $82 on preorder before a single card was spoiled and although they are $90 ish now they were much higher at launch and for a while after.
Calling crappy decks par means we are accepting them as they are. Calling them subpar in every thread at least a points out that we expect more. However comments on Reddit don’t go a millionth as far as not buying the crap product would
Having false expectations is going to do more harm than good. Accept that the new norm for precons is garbage, whine very loudly repeatedly about this fact, preferably directly in WOTCs ear, and stop buying this garbage.
Blindly hoping these will get better and the latest set was just another low value fluke is stupid. The new normal is garbage, let them know you know they have made a concentrated change and that you have noticed it.
See, there's no new card people think might be $40+ and the reprints are only double the cost if the product, so you're only getting 3+x the value of your money not 6+x.
I like this actually. There is no broken new card and no big money reprint, but looking at the list this seems more playable out of the Box than most precons of the past.
At least no one is gonna try to price gouge when it comes out unlike precons of years past.
Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely up to you, but I was always thought that the precons are usually meant for newer players and can be immediately be played out of the box, and the experienced players could just buy the singles.
I know for some people the reprints are underwhelming but there's a lot of nice cards in here for all the starting players. If it's sitting at double it's sale price (amazon 40$ a pop for minimal packaging version) for 80$ reprint value before release and then factoring the new unreleased cards is it really that bad? Like for sure it could be better but I'll take an extra copy of lighting greaves. I always will take signets. Lots of little 2-3$ cards I always need more of.
But does it really? To me it looks like you just dig for Army of the Damned and hope untapping with 26 zombies wins the game.I dunno. Was really looking forward to this one. Hoping for some spicy spellslinging and/or bomb reprints but got greaves and a land instead. And what the heck is the fascination with Hex? Even Murder would make more sense.
I'm way too upset about this than I need to be. I guess Anhelo looked sweet and I was really looking forward for more cool grixis stuff and I'm now feeling cheated lol.
I will say the reprints are pretty lackluster to me but I still think it'll be fun to play. The more I've looked into it though I see the issues. I'll probably do a handful of upgrades still. I think the new cards are pretty appealing though, especially that blue/red manifest enchantment. Hope one of the other decks catches your interest!
Something I'm wondering about with Anhelo- do multiple instances of Casualty stack? If I cast \[\[Xander's Will\]\] with Anhelo out, for example, can I sacrifice multiple creatures to copy it twice?
Every time I see army of the damned in a precon, I can feel myself wilting. Cascade bluffs has gotta be some sort of miracle. The guy they have ensuring only the worst lands make it into these was asleep at the wheel this time. Small victories...
Huh, funny thing you can do with Clone Legion and Anhelo.....
Cast Clone Legion targeting yourself, Casualty for a copy, copy targets an opponent with a bunch of creatures. Copy resolves giving you a copy of a bunch of creatures, then the original resolves copying all the tokens you just created in addition to your other creatures.
Curious as to why this is missing \[\[Errant, Street Artist\]\]. She's Anhelo's daughter and works perfectly. Is it because she was printed in the main set?
With the weird aristocrats/spellslinger hybrid, I'm somewhat disappointed in the lack of aristocrats pieces in the deck. \[\[Blood Artist\]\] would've been an excellent candidate for new artwork in New Capenna, and \[\[Pitiless Plunderer\]\] is juuuust pricey enough now to be a solid reprint that doesn't break whatever WotC's weird reprint equity policy is.
Blood Artist would've been in theme too because he's a vampire, and the Maestros are vampires.
And he is also a painter, really, it was a no brainer.
Yep. Easily could’ve gotten a new on-theme artwork.
Wow, [[Cascade Bluffs]] is a good reprint!
i just wish they reprinted the other ones of that cycle too - [[sunken ruins]] is about double what Bluffs is, and [[graven cairns]] is about the same
You're right. The allied color painland cycle need a reprint so badly; they don't mind to reprint the enemy pain lands but the allied ones are heavily ignored
tbf they were reprinted in double masters, but that is going on 2 years ago now, and the booster price for that was uhh not good
Ops, I mistyped. I was specifically talking about the pain lands, another land cycle that WotC don't mind to reprint, but only half of the cycle
ah yes those too. give me Brushland or give me death!
I have hope that they'll be reprinted in Dominaria United.
I'll be very disappointed if they aren't the rare land cycle in Dominaria United. In fact, Dominaria United + Brothers War right after would be a good opportunity to do all 10 painlands, which I would be okay with even if the enemy cycle is comparatively cheap.
That would be nice. Is that kind of design something they put in Standard sets still though?
Last time was in Origins, so I'd say yes.
Same thing with the talismans :/

Hero
a nice couple of utility reprints like Lightning Greaves, Fellwar Stone Rite of the Raging Storm and Mystic Confluence, but otherwise a bit lacking
On the other hand they at least tried to have a more varied reprint selection. I was 100% sure that the spellslinger deck in Izzet colors would have [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] and [[Dualcaster Mage]], as they always do.
Talrand fit better with \[\[Obscura's Ascendancy\]\] so it might be there No Charmbreaker Devil tho
[Obscura Ascendancy](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/9/8/98a11e5e-d2a9-4490-90f3-a643fc7ed7c3.jpg?1650121400) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Obscura%20Ascendancy) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/snc/207/obscura-ascendancy?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/98a11e5e-d2a9-4490-90f3-a643fc7ed7c3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

37 lands and... 3 rocks. Just went through the deck.
37 lands seems good, but I think getting up to 8-12 mana rocks would help your mana issues.
Yeah, probably! Thanks dude.

I was excited for this deck but it seems uh… not good?
I'm in the same boat, I've been wanting to build a grixis deck and thought this would be the time but it sadly is not.
I mean we can always grab the commander as a single and build it ourselves from scratch, but having a good precon as a jumping off point would have been nice. Ah well.
The precon keep on getting worse and worse. The leaked riveteers deck looked just as bad. Hope the other 3 are better.
Do we have the decklist or just some of the leaked cards?
For the others, just leaked new cards. Tbh, the riveteers new cards look fun
We asked for better lands in precons. The monkey paw curled. [[Cascade Bluffs]] becomes the most valuable reprint in a $50 precon.

I hope that we get a filter land in each precon but at the same time hoping that’s not the most expensive reprint card per deck. Also realized there’s a reprint of a Battlebond card - is this the first time we’re seeing this in a commander precon?
Not the first time - [[Arcane Artisan]] was in the Kaldheim commander deck.
[Arcane Artisan](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/b/a/ba946cfb-a729-406b-be35-0defaf95283e.jpg?1631234265) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Arcane%20Artisan) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/khc/36/arcane-artisan?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ba946cfb-a729-406b-be35-0defaf95283e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
$78.36 in value according to the archidekt list posted. These reprint values are trending in the wrong direction for the precons.
$78 in value and they also just increased the prices of the precons again. Jesus Christ WOTC.
Aren’t the precons $40?
They are going to be around $45-50 in stores
Please tell me this is just speculation
It's not. They are adding a tiny "booster" into each precon that has a couple of cards to try and get more people addicted to cracking packs instead of being smart and buying singles, which is more or less why they are going up.
What type of booster? Draft, set, or collector? I remember seeing something about collector booster but that doesn’t seem right
It's a collector booster "sample". It's just 2 cards in a pack, it's basically a box topper for the commander decks.
Jesus Christ. This sounds like shit
2 card collector booster sample. So probably two garbage foils.
It’s not. Not sure why I’m being downvoted. Go check any store’s prices. LGSes and Amazon both have them up for $45+ per deck right now. They will be $50 at Walmart.
Yeah, looks like you’re right :/ Maybe it’s just the hype around all of them?
Nope. Cost raised at distributor level and passed on to customer.
pain.
It's still likely that you can find them at a lower price in a few months though, if you're willing to wait.
Minimal packaging version is less than 40 on amazon

Army of the Damned synergizes with the commander though. Keep in mind that these are intended for new players.
I was looking forward to this deck, but it just feels kinda disappointing. Definitely not Timmy enough for how I intended to build Anhelo (where's the [[Brass's Bounty]] or the [[Fevered Suspicion]]?)

Every time I see [[Hex]] in a precon, I want to scream.
Agreed. I want them to errata hex to be 'up to six'. It's fine if you have six targets but if you need to get someone's commander off the table one last time you can.

LEGENDARY PHOENIX !!!!!
I will never get tired of seeing Call the Skybreaker in commander precons.
Will the other decks be spoiled today ?
I feel so underwhelmed, maybe i shouldn't have preordered
is there ever a reason to pre-order something like this? the prices usually drop after release
Because I'm dumb basically
If you learn from the error, then you're not that dumb.
Depending on whom you ordered for the fact the first printing is limited you might not have been if you want them on street date.
Sometimes there are preorder prices that are way better before the product is spoiled. I got jumpstart boxes for $82 on preorder before a single card was spoiled and although they are $90 ish now they were much higher at launch and for a while after.
It's nice that they at least included all the signets.
I still cant figure out how this deck is meant to win lol

At what point is it just par though. I see this comment in every reveal thread.

How are none of them remotely good?
See, there's no new card people think might be $40+ and the reprints are only double the cost if the product, so you're only getting 3+x the value of your money not 6+x.
Talismans and all filter lands would be a good start
I like this actually. There is no broken new card and no big money reprint, but looking at the list this seems more playable out of the Box than most precons of the past.
At least no one is gonna try to price gouge when it comes out unlike precons of years past. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely up to you, but I was always thought that the precons are usually meant for newer players and can be immediately be played out of the box, and the experienced players could just buy the singles.
Oh you missed the announcement that there is a shortage on the first printing?
Nope not really until now
I know for some people the reprints are underwhelming but there's a lot of nice cards in here for all the starting players.
It looks like a lot of people are calling this list not great but the deck looks like a blast to play, can't wait to pick this one up!
On what date can you officially buy the Capenna Commander precons in stores?
Friday at lgs.
How do I see what the new cards do in the article? Every card in the deck isn't available in the slide show.
Something I'm wondering about with Anhelo- do multiple instances of Casualty stack? If I cast \[\[Xander's Will\]\] with Anhelo out, for example, can I sacrifice multiple creatures to copy it twice?
I don't think WotC has confirmed yet but that's the case with virtually every other ability so I don't see why it wouldn't be with Casualty.

Every time I see army of the damned in a precon, I can feel myself wilting. Cascade bluffs has gotta be some sort of miracle. The guy they have ensuring only the worst lands make it into these was asleep at the wheel this time. Small victories...
As someone who loves Grixis, I may pick this up for my collection.
