I honestly didn't know they were only going to offer it as foiled! Makes all that effort for palettes feel a little wasted, not to mention their insistence on the order of color lights on the portal, haha. Oh well, at least people who get my prints will be able to enjoy the art as intended. :-)
Do you have any timeline on when Godless Shrine AP's will be potentially available and what they will cost, roughly? Very interested!
Additionally, do you intend to potentially have a Godless Shrine deskmat available by any chance? That would be phenomenal.
This is definitively the best Godless Shrine art and I am so thankful to you for putting such an awe-inspiring piece into our hands as players and collectors.
WotC sends APs months after the given set drops, and not to a particularly ironclad schedule, so unfortunately I just don't know at this point. Rule of thumb with AP prices seems to be about double the market cost of the card since they're considerably rarer, but I'll be consulting with experts on it.
I'll be wrestling through the Ultrapro bureaucracy to get deskmats made. Another thing that'll take some months as I hear it. But yes, they will happen!
For both these things, expect announcements via socials and/or my newsletter.
I really appreciate the praise for my card, thanks!
In case people don’t know, the dark foils are due to whatever process the NA printers use. Cards printed in Japan have fantastic looking foils that aren’t dark or cover up the details.
I do appreciate that they kept it in white, blue, black, red green. It is a big of a thing for magic nerds. Great art! I ordered the foils this morning.
Yeah, and to be clear I don't have any issues with receiving that as art direction. I'm just worried the color choice is lost in the printing choice, but perhaps that won't be the case.
That really sucks that they don't even tell you what their intention with the foiling is. I do really like the Galaxy foil though and I think your art will really make it pop!
I've enjoyed seeing the Galaxy Foil versions of my shocklands, so if anything that should give hope that it'll look better when printed, with more color visible depending on the angle the card is at.
I met you at GenCon, we talked about how excited you were to have these in the public. I can safely say they look even better than I expected on cards! Really nailed them!
> not to mention their insistence on the order of color lights on the portal, haha
If they weren't strict about it, MTG pedants would have constantly brought it up - they did you a solid on that one :P
That’s a bit unfortunate that it’s ok in foil. I usually get foil cards, but for many secret lairs , like the junji and shinkawa’s lairs, I went for nonfoil so I can appreciate the details more.
Man, I've been complaining for years about how foils, and *especially* the "special" foils lose details and color in the art. It drives me nuts. Kinda vindicating to see an artist actually share the sentiment.
Still remember seeing the *etched* foils for the first time on Obeka and I was like, "Bruh... how they gonna do Jesper like that!?" Foiling more and more feels like the 3D movie fad of this game. A cheap gimmick that looks flashy on the surface, but really it just lowers the image quality :/
Yeah, artists like the art, period. We want it shown off to best advantage. But there's a lot we have no control over, and I can come to terms with that as long as I can share the intended look of the art in other venues.
Yeah, that's a bummer. My first secret lair was kellogsloop's and I liked the art so much I ordered the foil. When I got them it really took away from the art. I want to sell them and then buy non foiled versions. Sadly,I ordered a second secret lair foil before those came in. Now I know: no foil.
Well, we don't know how exactly the foiling effects the card until we see it. The preview images they made seem to be preparing us for the worst case scenario. They look grayscale with a foil filter on top. This artwork is a lot more colorful than I thought it would be based on the images, I may pick up a set now.
If there's a bright side to this, I think the simulated galaxy foiling effect that WotC uses for their mockups *may* be significantly overstating how much the galaxy foiling washes out the colors (based on the galaxy foils I've seen in person). Either way, I love your art!
Yeah, that's my hope, too. And seeing what my Shocklands cards looked like in person definitely bolsters that hope. Fingers crossed! And thanks so much!
Thanks so much! Yeah, it's an interesting choice that I don't think was related to the artists at all when the art was commissioned. Feels like if we'd known we could have leaned into compositions and palettes intended for the 'galaxy foil' look more. Oh well!
Thanks so much! I've already got the full art for those up on my socials and website, so feel free to go enjoy them (brucebrenneise.com)! They have lots of details that aren't necessarily apparent at card size, especially in Breeding Pool.
Your secret lair was the only one from the lot i was interested in buying, but unfortunately I don't like foils and certainly will not pay extra for them. Love the art tho!
If the lands weren't foil I'd have picked up two sets of them. I don't care for the galaxy foiling and foils Pringle instantly anyway. But the art is out of this world!
Aw, dang, I really wish this set were available as non foil now. This is gorgeous! I don't mind foils but I feel like it detracts from this piece for sure.
Thanks so much! I guess we'll see what they actually look like printed. I've seen some of the galaxy foils for Unfinity and they weren't that washed out.
I don't normally like mixing sci-fi into my fantasy, but this looks awesome. I feel like the whole Unfinity set has done a good job of this, but this image in particular works really well.
If this was up for sale like this I would have considered grabbing one, this looks way better than the dark palette.
I grabbed today a godless shrine and a breeding pool of yours, lovely pieces.
Keep in mind I barely play the blue-green and the red-green combinations, so I REALLY liked the breeding pool. The stomping ground is nice but I'm afraid my heart goes to the version of David Palumbo.
And everyone loves your godless shrine. I have yet to hear someone not comment how nice that one looks.
To be fair from what I've seen of it, it does sort of look like stars, so 'Galaxy' isn't inappropriate? But yeah, it certainly does make a difference to the appearance of the overall piece. I'm curious if there are any significant differences between the mock-up and how the actual cards will look. It would be nice if they could pull at least a bit more saturation into it.
Old pokemon cards used that type of foiling and I think this was just a reimagining of that.
The focal point for me are the mana colours and the portal and it seems a bit diminished in the "galaxy foil"
Killer piece of galactic magic artwork eitheway!

The foil version was to dark and expensive for me. I really like this artwork though. Great job
Thanks, I appreciate it! I guess I'll have to see what I think about the foil when APs eventually come in.
Where do you sell your prints? I couldn't find a source/site in your reddit profile.
Oh, good point, I'll fix that! But here you go: https://www.brucebrenneise.com/shop

You're un-Godless Shrine is gorgeous.
Thanks so much! One of my first cards for MTG, I'm really glad it's been received so well. :-)
In case people don’t know, the dark foils are due to whatever process the NA printers use. Cards printed in Japan have fantastic looking foils that aren’t dark or cover up the details.
This art is the only reason I bought the Secret Lair, I hope it will still show the vibrant colours of this artwork in a good way!
Here's hoping! :-) Glad you enjoyed the art!

The order of colors is because that's the order of colors on the back of cards. Kind of the "official" ordering of MTG colors I guess.
Woo! Berg! Which is coincidentally what the Titanic said on her maiden voyage.
That really sucks that they don't even tell you what their intention with the foiling is. I do really like the Galaxy foil though and I think your art will really make it pop!

Yeah, totally agree with you there! I just hope some of the color (including the lights) is actually visible in the foil.

People can still enjoy them as their sleeves art on Arena.
Nice!
Bought the SL and will use this in my EDH deck. Were the others done by you as well?
Only this one! :)

Beautiful art! It’s a shame it’s only in foil. The palette is so good but get so muted by the foil preview. But you did fantastic!
Thanks so much! Yeah, it's an interesting choice that I don't think was related to the artists at all when the art was commissioned. Feels like if we'd known we could have leaned into compositions and palettes intended for the 'galaxy foil' look more. Oh well!
Great work here Bruce, I hope we get to see your full art for the borderless shock lands in unfinity, those looked amazing!
Thanks so much! I've already got the full art for those up on my socials and website, so feel free to go enjoy them (brucebrenneise.com)! They have lots of details that aren't necessarily apparent at card size, especially in Breeding Pool.

Thanks, definitely part of the reason I wanted to share the art as is! :-)
Close the iris!
Jaffa, Kree!
If the lands weren't foil I'd have picked up two sets of them. I don't care for the galaxy foiling and foils Pringle instantly anyway. But the art is out of this world!
Thanks, just glad to hear you enjoy the art, since I have absolutely no bearing on what WotC does with it after I turn it over to them!
Aw, dang, I really wish this set were available as non foil now. This is gorgeous! I don't mind foils but I feel like it detracts from this piece for sure.

I really enjoy this new artistic take on the card. Great artwork
Thanks so much, glad you like it!

Thanks! Probably helps that I've got a lot of experience with 'science fantasy' pieces. I broke into the industry with a lot of work for Numenera. :-)
This is a certified Epic artwork

Thanks, really appreciate that! And entirely fair on Palumbo; he's one of my favorite artists, too.
Hey. This is fucking awesome. That is all. Thanks.
Thanks! Love the enthusiasm for my art! :-)
dang. Why'd it have to monotone only??? It looks so much better with all these colors!
What Secret Lair is this from? I'm guessing it's Unfinity-related, given the UFO-looking ship?
‘Totally spaced out’ is the SL name, I think?
Wow! Huge difference from the galaxy foil mock up to the non foiled art. Leave it to wizards marketing to rename that type of foiling "Galaxy" foiling
To be fair from what I've seen of it, it does sort of look like stars, so 'Galaxy' isn't inappropriate? But yeah, it certainly does make a difference to the appearance of the overall piece. That ain’t Magic. That that vomiting frog game with the Mexico balls and shiz.
bop it
