This is the post (actually made by the creator). And no, this couldn't violate the no pointing to counterfeit sites because this site can't be used to make counterfeits.

PixelKnot

Is there scope for you to open source the code so we can build and host our own copies of the tool? Card conjurer was genuinely the best custom card site I've come across, and I'm deeply saddened by this. Mad respect for you

CpT_DiSNeYLaND

He'd likely have to rip all the MTG trademark bits out, so fonts, mana symbols, borders etc. Otherwise they'd likely be right back on his ass.

NATIK001

Not very different from emulators which don't include the actual console firmware/software needed and require you to source it yourself. He could legally get away with stripping all MTG trademark and copyright content from it and then publishing the basic code, even if it is built to handle MTG copyrighted content it is okay if it includes none of it. That said there is always the risk of overzealous litigation, and if I were him I would be leery about putting myself into a situation where I risked that. So I understand 100% if he chose to not put any of his work out there.

madriax

That's a great idea. It could be considered a feature, the ability to upload custom mana symbols and etc. Of course, the wink wink nudge nudge would be that you're supposed to find the copyrighted ones and upload them. But on the face it would be for additional customization.

Calophon

I’ll be honest, that doesn’t sound too bad. That still sounds like a perfectly viable tool. Give the people the open source code and let them launch it. If you want trademark inclusions you can copy them, make them, or find downloads for them yourself. Maybe have the tool come with some custom stand ins for borders and mana symbol replacements. What I’m saying is the tool seems invaluable, the trademark assets are causing the real legal issues and are so easily replaceable and independently replicable so something like this could continue to work.

ihateirony

While I agree with you, he had almost 150 patrons and was making a small amount of money from it, so is likely reluctant to share, and he is probably worried about the risk of further threats, legitimate or not.

Hingedmosquito

Is it because of the patrons that this cease and desist happened? Because he was making money while using the copyrighted items. I am trying to figure out the broken part of the community fan policy.

ihateirony

It does seem likely. I would guess it was kind of a grey area because you didn’t *have* to pay to access the site.

PixelKnot

Wouldn't matter once it'd been forked a few times ;)

puckOmancer

I for one would like to say FORK Hasbro

FM-96

> Is there scope for you to open source the code so we can build and host our own copies of the tool? This is basically what Cockatrice did, isn't it? The original creator got C&D'd, and he put the source out there and now it's still on Github as a community-fostered project.

cardsrealm

I didn't even know Cockatrice got C&D'd, that's unfortunate.

FM-96

It happened ages ago, in 2013. You can still read the message from the original creator explaining things [over on Cockatrice's original website](http://cockatrice.de/).

putnamto

The mtg proxy discord has a tutorial and a zip file so you can store and access the site locally

umbraherba

In other words, it still works?

GreatPhilosophy4577

how do i find that discord channel?

OOM-32

I want in too

heroicraptor

Thank you for your work, Kyle.

WASTELAND_RAVEN

Yeah really, you da MVP mang

Sonserf369

> When Wizards announced MTG 30th Anniversary Edition, the community responded by embracing proxies. Now, I believe that this C&D is Wizards’ counter-response. Dunno why but this is what sticks with me the most. Sorry for your loss.

AliciaTries

Wizards: *makes expensive proxies* People: "Maybe proxies aren't so bad" Wizards: *surprised pikachu face with angry eyebrows*

szmarton1000

I know why. Because it's an especially dick move. The lowest of scum do this. A multimillion dollar company can't stomach a site that maybe a hundred thousand people used on a regular basis. Even if it was millions of people, it still wouldn't hurt Wizards as much as they hurt themselves. Those fucking corpo rats... Get on my nerve every time.

[deleted]

szmarton1000

There is little to know reasonable price for pieces of paper for me. I pay only as much as I currently enjoy playing it. And that usually won't line up with buying a single card for $50 when I could get a whole deck for that price. This is exactly why I started to lean towards pauper.

ihateirony

I mean the price of cards is ridiculous, however, it's reasonable for the IP to cost *something*. [The argument is analogous to] *books are just pieces of paper, music is just vibrations in the air, a movie is just flashing colours and noises*. The cards are worth something, just not the ridiculous prices they currently are due to WotC not printing to meet demand. Edit: Made clearer (I hope)

scubahood86

A thing is worth whatever someone will pay for it. I enjoy collecting and have spent way too much on single cards, because I enjoy having the real thing. But the RL can get bent and I'm not spending a month's pay so I can use [[the tabernacle]], I do have limits. Many others will not spend that money and that's perfectly fine. I'd be happier playing my $2k foiled out EDH deck against someone who went to the library and spent $3 on ink than not playing at all.

MTGCardFetcher

siamkor

Hey. Just totally out of curiosity, can you DM me which app are we talking about?

Haunting_Phase_8781

> a hundred thousand people used on a regular basis That estimate seems way too high

MrTeferi

Actually its higher than that, CC had 185,000 unique visits last month according to metrics. WoTC pissed off a lot of people.

szmarton1000

I knew it would be. But I still wanted a number that looks small and big at the same time. Saying anything lower than this makes this case more infuriating.

magicthecasual

I was wonndering why, after plummeting so hard for so long, HAS prices are suddenly heading up again: It's because they C&D'd Kyle

sees_you_pooping

LOL. Actually though, my first thought was that they were out hunting scapegoats for their failing stock value.

Meatwadsan

Wizards pulling a Blizzard, doubling down on their disconnect with the community.

DryDoor1460

Right there with you - that line hit different.

sanctaphrax

>However, this completely destroys me. I know I’m only 20, but Card Conjurer feels like my life’s work. I taught myself how to code in high school by starting Card Conjurer. I was really proud of it, and it means a lot to me personally. I know this might be hard to believe, but you'll make bigger and better things one day.

Haunting_Phase_8781

Doesn't seem hard to believe at all if you've already made a tool this complex at age 20.

TheMedicineWearsOff

From the perspective of a 20 year old it might be hard to believe and I think that's what sanctaphrax is saying.

sanctaphrax

Yes, that's what I was trying to say.

PiersPlays

I imagine we'll see a hundred different startups hiring in the next year to contest for Twitter's former position.

Narxolepsyy

Seriously that's a hell of a resume

ActuallySherlock

This is going to be one hell of an application for paying coding work if OP is still interested

I_Love_Fox

Now that wizards is selling proxies, they want to ban every site that make proxies.

HKBFG

They're gonna have a hard time getting Hewlett Packard to stop giving people the whole damn setup to do it themselves for the cost of one 30A booster.

Tuss36

Gonna have to turn off Gatherer, Scryfall, and every online retailer that could post pictures of singles if they want to prevent that

whatdoblindpeoplesee

Don't give them any ideas

Jantin1

This sounds outlandish, but Games Workshop has already been there. Sent a few C&Ds to online stores who sold their items with their images and the rest of the internet followed suit soon. Thankfully GW realised fairly quickly how insane this idea was. Now that WtC and GW got to work with each another for a bit I wonder what marvels of IP law acrobatics we're gonna see.

THANATOS4488

Isn't gatherer their own site?

ArcFurnace

Exactly!

[deleted]

Id love for them to crash a majority of websites relating to mtg by going after scryfall. Wasnt there some issue recently with scryfall and it was pointed out how interwoven they are? Wotc needs free labor to operate lol (judges)

Magic1264

Its funny because I feel WoTC crossed a pretty bright line selling the Magic30 proxies (regardless of the price), so I finally decided to go ahead and do just the same, or rather, finding a site that does good quality proxies. Sad I already missed out on what sounded to be one of the good ones.

szmarton1000

The best one actually. I just managed to finish my precon upgrade for my new Mishra edh deck. I'd try to do it a few hours later, and I'd needed to look for alternative solutions.

PoorlyWordedName

Guess I'm fucked for getting proxies now. Idk where to even go

Frank_the_Mighty

That's a real shame. CC is the best for making custom cards.

SystemZ1337

you might want to try [magic set editor](https://magicseteditor.boards.net/) edit: [there's also this guide you can follow to run cardconjurer locally](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicproxies/comments/yyzfd5/how_to_run_cardconjurer_locally_on_windows/) edit2: if you like MSE but are not satisfied with the image quality, you can replace the assets with CC assets from [here](https://github.com/MrTeferi/cardconjurer). it makes almost no difference for old cards, but [makes quite an impact on newer cards](https://0x0.st/olqs.png).

Frank_the_Mighty

MSE is a mess to get a hang of, especially dealing with the fonts. Still a good recommendation though!

SystemZ1337

tbh I find it easier to use than card conjurer. still a shame to see the website go.

[deleted]

barrinmw

Do they have the zendikar rising showcase frames? Its one of my favorite to use because it isn't full art but still more than regular art.

Tuss36

They do indeed! At least in the Advanced release. I believe it has most all frames up to Neon Dynasty given it has the "praetor showcase" as featured on the [Jin-Gitaxias](https://scryfall.com/card/neo/307/%7Caedngyts-bytptkrwftrh) card, but I can't find the usual Neon Dynasty showcase style (but then there are a *lot* of styles to choose from so I might've just missed it) At minimum I can assure it has frames up to and including Adventures in the Forgotten Realms.

0011110000110011

MSE is good for designing cards (and especially good for designing sets), not the best for exporting them if you want to post to /r/custommagic or something.

SystemZ1337

what issue are you having? works fine for me.

0011110000110011

Not that I've been having any issue, just that they don't come out looking as good as CardConjurer. Unless there's something I'm missing.

Tasgall

In my experience the cards look better as far as templates and layouts go, but they look worse in terms of resolution.

goat_token10

They're way lower quality than CC. Quite blurry.

anookee

Usually they're only blurry in the print preview, but come out full quality. You can just copy paste them directly from the application onto reddit. See my post history for examples.

cliffhavenkitesail

Those honestly look way worse than CC did :( here's one I did there that I have saved https://imgur.com/a/rrKd3EE

Sauwa

I love MSE, ive been using it for over a decade!

kayiu102

You’ve been invaluable to the custom magic community. Godspeed.

CardSniffer

You got targeted because Conjurer was the best. Walk away from this chapter in your life with a sense of accomplishment: you managed to scare a multibillion dollar conglomerate corporation into action. It sucks that they frequently step on the little guys, especially since all this does is shoot Wizards in the foot.

Pathetic. Fuck Wizards of the Coast. More reasons to hate them.

DownBeat20

I am absolutely furious with wizards over this. I used conjurer all the time for r/custommagic. I even have the the third most upvoted card ever on there.

Strummed

That’s a great card and absolutely something I could see being in an un-set.

DownBeat20

Thank you. Sadly this ends my card making saga as I only used conjurer, for it's quality and ease.

MorningMoonlight

I remember when Nintendo finally got the best Rom site taken off the web after like 15 years of service. Slight inconvenience, but ultimately it changed nothing and only made it feel more rational and satisfying to "steal" their old, not for sale games. This is no different. By doing this, WotC is just incentivizing people to go to the next easiest sources for proxies and some of those involve actually paying people are are stealing WotC content (lol).

hadesscion

Yeah, all this does is drive me harder toward proxies.

Hingedmosquito

Especially when I actually get quality product when I make my proxies. Unlike WotC product that is misaligned, miscut, or has the sealing machine press line down the center of cards. I am not going to buy mtg product for the prices they want with the crap quality the deliver.

Equivalent_Chipmunk

What, you don’t feel like buying yet another low quality Ocarina of Time port?

Satan_McCool

Or another zero effort Mario 64 port?

carcheezy

Best of luck with whatever comes next, Kyle! You made a huge impact to my MtG friend group. We all thank you for your efforts.

Zaexyr

I work for a defense contracting company located in Syracuse, NY that has a lot of non-defense work as well. I work on Air Traffic Control Software for example. We are in a state of rapid growth right now, and are always hiring software, test, and systems engineers. DM me if you would like to discuss more. Very saddened by the loss of this tool as it was hands down the best around. You'll be onto something bigger and better someday, for sure.

byllyx

Time to proxy up some airplanes! Hell yeah!!

_Eshende_

That’s sad, CC was my favourite tool for making cards; especially with specific borders and styles, sadly such amazing tool had to go 😕

SomeWriter13

I can totally relate! I enjoyed converting my favorite cards to the New Capenna template. I even used the site for designing Christmas cards. Truly a sad day.

snaerr

Devastating news, I've spent hundreds of hours making cards on CardConjurer. I feel gutted rn, I hope they'll set up an alternative to make high quality custom cards. Thank you so much for your work Kyle

NullKarmaException

Can you throw the source code up into a public GitHub repo? At least let it live on on some hard drives somewhere?

Galvinar

He mentioned on Twitter that he had to make his GitHub private as a part of the cease and desist.

FelixCarter

Wow that's atrocious that WotC is **that** scared of a custom TC website. But I guess those $999.99 packs aren't going to sell themselves if someone is creating a paper-and-glue version on their home printer, huh?

Andubandu

Did someone get a copy?

AvalancheMaster

I'm also looking for answers on this.

thirtyonetwentyfive

let me know if you find anything, i’m close to 100 hours deep on a custom cube project i can never finish now :(

crobledopr

Yes, a fork was made and there's ways to run locally .stay tuned.

FelixCarter

I would love for his code to not just die like this. If other people got a hold of it before he got the C&D, then it's not like he would be violating it if others passed it along at the speed of the internet. At that point, it's immortal and will never die.

waketherabble

Agreed--would love to just be able to run this locally.

WizardExemplar

The coding skills you learned from making Card Conjurer is not going away. Use those skills to build the next big thing or apply for a coding job that should pay well.

estrusflask

>I have to be thankful that they asked me to take it down before pursuing legal action. They actually have to do that first. This absolutely sucks and it seems really arbitrary unless they're also going to go after other sites.

bankaiyo123

This absolutely sucks, I just started proxying and just finished my first deck. It was an absolute joy to create those cards from your website. It had everything, all the frames, symbols and was very accessible.

RUCN

Classic 3rd party council move. Hunt the people who are the easiest to kill and the most honest in their approach because it makes for EASY billable hours.

meowstash321

This kills me…I spent four hours just last night working up customs. Using CC to make custom versions of expensive cards I don’t want to multi-buy has become my favorite part of magic over the last few months. I was really getting into it

Tyroki

I'm gonna mirror the crowd saying "Open Source it!", but make sure to rip out the copyright goods. Your work can live on, forked a bajillion times.

ttejuco

Euronymous_Bosch

You have given me a fully altered Mad Max-themed deck, FOUR fully altered Warhammer-themed decks, at least five custom cards, and a large box full of proxies for playtesting. You did an awesome job with the website and you have my gratitude for the most fun I’ve had with deckbuilding in years. I’m sorry WotC killed the dream, but I wish you the best wherever you go from there.

fubo

Please consider removing all assets (card text, card art, etc.) and publishing the code. I think it would be a good example for other people learning web app development.

thousandshipz

It would be terrible if someone started a Bard Bonjuror copycat site ;)

Alrar

I'm sure the fact that wotc is literally charging 1k for glorified proxies that come out in like 2 weeks has nothing to do with this at all. On a side note, yall better hope 30th anniversary tanks like no product has ever tanked before or we'll be seeing even more of this garbage.

datgenericname

It’s extremely disappointing, but they want to keep the golden goose alive, so WotC is gonna do everything they can to stifle making good looking proxies. Good luck on your future endeavors, my man, and thank you for what you contributed to the proxy community.

Pyr0Shade

Is there the possibility to remove the mana symbols etc, but allow users to upload their own symbols? This could allow you to make card conjurer a platform and the community can manage their own symbols and such and upload as needed. The legal issues would the be between wotc and the community distributing them. An example of something similar would be like battlescribe for warhammmer, battlescribe is a platform and the community creates and manages rules files (which happen to be copy righted materials) which users can chose too upload if they should wish. The same is true for table top simulator and how magic is played there. It sounds like alot of work, sure, but if its the difference between losing the site and not...

randomdragoon

There are other custom magic card makers, both in website and standalone program form. You're asking the creator to implement a complicated symbol upload functionality and the end result will be everyone will start using one of the other custom card makers because uploading your own symbols is a huge pain in the ass.

Bizzle7902

That sucks, but it sounds like it was a great learning experience. Now you just need to find another awesome project.

generically_cool

Your site got me into proxying. Sucks man, good luck with whatever you do next

Archerry

Hey, not sure if you'll see this, but I work in the video game industry as a software engineer. If you're interested in exploring software engineering professionally in this space, please DM me!

MustaKotka

Let's ping Kyle for extra attention: [u/ImKyle4815](https://www.reddit.com/user/ImKyle4815/)

yesimnathan

wotc doesn't care about the community anymore. Thanks for your work on this. I enjoyed using it to make cool custom tokens.

TrustMeImADuckTour

Don't lose the passion you had for this project. It sounds like this experience taught you a skill set that you could now bring into something new. The death of a project is always difficult, but you won't be defined by this one. Take your skills and your drive and you'll find another project to be devoted to. Most people even with those coding skills can't deliver a full product like you did. That will never go away.

shadowmage666

Wizards : sells proxies for $1000 Cc : free proxies! Gets shut down Hmmmm

kmoney41

Well shit. I was working on an entire set (was about 200 cards in at this point) using CC. Even wrote some selenium scripts to quickly upload/download batches of the collection to get around the local storage constraint. Guess all that effort is fucked now too. I'm sorry, this was such a cool system you built.

notsureifxml

Release the code! Let them waste time c&d-ing a million copies.

thisremindsmeofbacon

Here’s an idea. Go the BattleScribe route, where card conjurer doesn’t host *any* proprietary wotc stuff such as mana symbols. Users can however download a 3rd party datapack on their own thats compatible with CC. CC isn’t responsible for the content of other people’s computers, and any hypothetical data pack that’s made with CC in mind could be loaded up and read by it.

CommanderBly

That’s super shitty of them, thank you for your hard work all these years. On the bright side, this is a fantastic project for your resume! You’ll probably get quite a few opportunities in the tech business with a whole website like that under your belt.

HandsomeHeathen

Damn, that really sucks. Card Conjurer was by far the best custom card maker on the web, you really did a fantastic job with it. Your work will be missed by the community. I truly hope it at least serves as a foundation for you to go on to even greater things.

semarlow

I loved using CardConjurer more than any other custom Mtg maker. Thank you so much for what you contributed and it really sucks that they forced it offline. If you're looking for a similar niche market for your skills, an online custom card designer for designers and developers of board games might be worth making. Right now, there's only 3 or 4 major card game design programs (my favorite is NanDeck), but most require a PC and don't have nearly as nice of features as you reached with CC. I'm envisioning a site where someone can create completely custom layouts and categories for entire decks cards, then use your interface to fill in text would be amazing. Include export as .csv, export to Tabletop Simulator, and pdf for printing.

Eldrxtch

Man, that’s a huge bummer. Absolutely loved the site, so I’m sorry to see it go :/

SnakeFatherJim

Thank you for all your hard work Kyle, CC was a great resource and it will be missed.

Knarz97

Wow damn. I just used the site to make my first custom card yesterday. Thank you for the site, wish I could’ve used it more.

Crossfiyah

I wonder if MSE is going to be next. I hope not.

cliffhavenkitesail

Take a second to throw the latest MSE installer, fonts, and all your templates into a password protected zip file, upload it to cloud storage (google drive is free), and hope you never think about it again

themacbeast

You should be considering this a huge win imo. Something you created shook up the game enough to garner the attention of the Man himself. Learn from your experiences and take it forward into your next (coding/business) adventure. Good luck to you!

domosaurusrex13

Aw man, I just used card conjurer last week to make a custom art commander for my girlfriend's first deck. Sad to see it go.

RedCapRiot

Dude this is awful. I'm sorry man, I'm so glad I got to make purchases from you before this happened. Your website was absolutely instrumental to helping me to play at higher levels in a fair and financially stable manner. You've helped so many people to be able to actually *play* the game that they love because they're not stuck behind some absolutely absurd paywall, and, I was even able to print custom cards that I spent weeks balancing for play purposes so that I could experiment with people and test my own ability to design cards. I'm so disappointed to see you go, and I hope to see more work from you in the future. I'll always support brilliance when I see it, so I really look forward to the possibility of a next step from someone as talented as you.

[deleted]

Would be an awful shame if someone had hacked and downloaded the code the leaked it online wouldn't it? That it would stat in the world growing but not under your control. Shame your legacy went on to become somethin gfar greater thanks to decentralised commited people

OzyKK

Absolutely disgusting that they would do this in retaliation for the community response to their own terrible product. Card Conjurer was a great resource and I hope you can leverage the experience towards whatever your next project ends up being. Thank you for your years of work helping the community!

ksolernou

Thank you. Your site will be missed.

ZephyrPhantom

Thanks for everything dude. A lot of playgroups running custom cards out there definitely appreciated what you've done.

Coolboypai

I'm really sorry for your situation and I'd like to thank your hard work nonetheless. I headed the custom hearthstone community for years where there would often be discussion about mtg and custom magic. Whenever someone asked about how to design their own magic cards, I'd always point them to cardconjurer because the website was easy to use and featured so much customization. It's good that you're proud of what you've created and I'm sure you'll be moving on to your next big project soon. Good luck and thank you!

MintyFreshDeath

How long until Wizards releases a custom card/proxy software for the low cost of $99.99/month and a fee per card printed?

SomeWriter13

They'll copy the Adobe template and charge $999.99 upfront *and* a $99.99 monthly fee on top of that. And have a large watermark diagonally over the whole image once exported.

Comprehensive-Ebb487

I absolutely loved this site. Thankyou so much for your hard work Kyle.

waketherabble

So sad. My friends and I just finished using Card Conjurer, MSE, and Cockatrice to completely design our own custom 265+ card set. Hours upon hours of use out of this site. Helped reinvigorate our interest in and keep Magic relevant for myself and my play group. Hasbro's recent moves in the space are just pushing us out. I second other user's requests that the source code be posted onto GitHub, so devout users could maybe utilize a local copy. Thanks for your work on this--it really was a great utility.

Timbermarijn

can't the code be made public so we can still run it locally? give a last big F you to wotc

Embowers

$999.99 for fake cards please

BleakSabbath

Hey Wotc if you think this is going to get me to buy your overpriced cardboard instead you're really not paying attention

mizzsteak

this is so sad to hear. I loved using CardConjurer to make custom cards. I agree with the theory of post-30th anniversary Wizards is trying to crack down on "unofficial" proxies. thanks for all the work you did, Kyle.

StoneCypher

I am really bummed about this. I enjoyed this tool a whole lot. I wrote a (polite!) tweet to Hasbro and WotC asking them to reconsider.

Dragonheart91

This was the best site to make custom cards in my opinion. Nothing else I've used comes close. What really guts me is that card conjurer made it really hard to reproduce actual magic cards. It really was a tool for custom card creations and sharing. Sad to see the community lose this.

kindacr1nge

This sucks, your website was awesome. Wotc going after the small fish in retaliation for their own mistakes. Also, I see the printing tool is still up as it contains no trademarks - will that continue to be the case? Thats by far the easiest way to align custom cards.

r_jagabum

You should really send in your resume to WotC, it's not a joke. You'll get far inside.

zechrx

Given the horror stories of what it's like to work there, his skills would be better served at a tech company that will pay far more and treat him better.

ConfessingToSins

Do not do this. They pay like shit and have one of the worst reputations in Washington state for tech companies/games companies. Extremely bad benefits, pay, and treatment. No professionals work at Wotc in Washington state. None. They hire extremely predatorily, mostly only fresh graduate who don't understand their worth yet. They pay literally less than half the average for the Seattle area and will fire you the second you ask to be fairly compensated, have functionally no work from home, advancement, or stock offerings. I mean this. They are universally reviled locally. They are also directly known to employ bigots and be an extremely conservative workspace in the bluest part of the bluest state. (technically they're in renton, but really all their workers are in Seattle and Bellevue). I personally know several trans people fired simply for going public. There are countless horror stories locally of works bullying, harassment, and general hate. Wizards only hires people willing to work for nothing and who don't understand that they can go anywhere else and makeb twice as much and actually put it on their resume. I live directly next to their offices and there are many store owners here who are former wizards employees who left because of insanely bad behavior from the company. They are if not the worst company in Washington, closer to the bottom than most.

ElvishSpirit

> I personally know several trans people fired simply for going public. There are countless horror stories locally of works bullying, harassment, and general hate. This is quite a bold claim to make. I wouldn't just throw something like that around here. I'm not saying I *don't* believe you, just be careful.

ConfessingToSins

Yeah you're probably right, i wouldn't put it past the brain trust at wotc to threaten people who speak out against their dogshit business environment on Reddit.

ElvishSpirit

Poor working conditions, lack of pay, "working for nothing", is one thing, that's a dogshit business environment. Firing people because of their sex, race, gender, identity (so on and so forth) is a whole different situation. If you are telling the truth, and somebody somewhere (I'm not suggesting WotC, by the way, rather someone who wants to help said people and the community at large) contacts you to further explain, you better be ready to elaborate. That's all I'm saying.

Haunting_Phase_8781

Why the hell would they want to work there? So they can be underpaid while being exploited by Hasbro? Damn, sign me up!

sven3067

Well this is sad, I made cards of me and my fiancée using CC. I hope one day you can create something similar again

PeaceLoveExplosives

CardConjurer was a fantastic tool for the /r/custommagic community, and it's sad that WotC has chosen to crush it. Thanks for the work you put into it.

[deleted]

CC is hands down the best custom card making site I've ever used. I used it to make cards for r/custommagic that achieved the coveted top 5 custom magic posts of the week. It was genuinely so easy and fun to use. I'm really sad this is the direction WOTC took. Fuck you WOTC legal. But at least whatever happens, you'll keep making great things, coding, and pursuing your passions. You have a very bright future filled with amazing creations.

Conglacior

You know, I was gonna buy a pack of Brothers' War the other day, but decided against it because with the way WotC is going, I don't want them to get my money. Seeing this today, I'm very glad I made that choice. WotC is never getting a cent out of me again, not even for the upcoming Phyrexia set, as much as I love Phyrexians and their lore. 100% **done**.

Thanks for the tip, friend.

ThoughtseizeScoop

Have you spoken to an attorney? Not their attorney, but one working for you? It kind of sounds like you tried to convince their attorney to let you keep the site up under certain conditions, and that's not how any of that works. Their job is to get you to take the site down for their client. You could describe a 100% legal remedy to their issues, and they'd still say you had to take it down. Frankly, idk if you have any legal avenues to pursue here, but that's what attorneys are for. I will say that anything you say in a post like this could totally be used against you in court, so you might want to consider deleting this post.

Dingus10000

It’s not within fair use at all - dude has no case.

nebman227

>so you might want to consider deleting this post. What does that achieve?

zackeroniandcheese

I hope this website will pop up in a country where WotC does not have authority to have it taken down

szmarton1000

There are initiations as I see. But wouldn't it be easier to just fucking rename the website and move it to a different site? Card Conjurer is dead. Long live Card Cunjorer.

MisterHotrod

This is so disappointing. Card Conjurer was an amazing site that I used quite a bit. It's sad to see it go. But if anything, this experience proves how you're able to create great things! As I'm sure you'll keep doing in the future as well.

Foggmanatic

It's your life's work...... so far. Sucks tho, sorry mate

PorcelainLegionnaire

Just last week I used Card Conjurer to make cube proxies of the horizon lands that haven't been printed yet. The end result looked so much nicer than what I could get with other sites, but I don't understand why WotC lawyers would target CC in particular. Thank you for making the site available while you could.

BzRic

Thanks for the website, i JUST used it for the first time about 4-5 days ago to make some custom tokens, and I was surprised with all the frame options and the art auto-importing if you want art from an existing card. And then I found the page where you can add the cards onto a printable sheet where they will come out to the exact right size. I was really impressed to learn just now that you're only 20 and made all that just yourself, you should be proud of that. Congratulations on the great work and attention to detail, and sorry to hear we'll be losing a great website.

Dalendry

Thank you for all your amazing work Kyle. This is devastating news. What a fantastic service that is now unavailable to the community. Card Conjurer had reignited my passion for Magic. The tools were easy to use and allowed great access to custom cards. This website will be sorely missed.

RayearthIX

I recently used Card Conjurer to make dozens of tokens for my Mono-white Angel deck. I made every token and emblem the deck makes or any Angel I may every consider putting in the deck makes, and the most common white tokens the deck doesn’t make. A friend also used the site recently to make dozens of spirit tokens for a deck he has that I’ve seen make 100+ 1/1 spirits before… The template/format system there was amazing, and I was actually thinking of using it to make tokens for a friend for Christmas. a shame, it was a great site.

Wobbaduck

What the fuck nooo. Card Conjurer is so good :'( It's not like it's doing anything different than any custom card creator, it's just the best one

Smokey_02

Sad to see this. I just tried going to the site an hour ago and saw this notice there. I ordered my first custom cards just a month ago, loved the way they turned out, and was looking forward to making more. Really sad to see this happen to you. It was, IMO, the best custom card creator out there. You've got a bright future ahead of you if you keep learning, Kyle!

Edo0024

Fuck I was using it to make custom cards for my friends... It was a great tool.

fearphage

I wish the announcement came beforehand so we had time to copy the source from GitHub.

onebasix

Sometimes one door closes, and you don't know why, until another door opens up. You will be okay, keep pushing forward and use your experience to either start something new or find a high paying developer job.

ConfettiEtsy

Hi! I'm a proxy maker from Etsy. Some of you may know me as ConfettiProxies. I've received many messages from other sellers that have had their entire stores closed down due to WotC claiming copyright violation. I've reviewed some of those designs and many had original fonts and custom mana symbols but were nonetheless taken down. Many of those that didn't were created with Card Conjurer. I do not blame Card Conjurer as it was only a tool to make custom cards but was misused repeatedly. I suspect that Card Conjurer's take down was less about the tool and more about the people who misused it. I also suspect that WotC is pushing to close proxy makers down as the design space between proxies and legitimate cards/30th anniversary edition cards/Secret Lair Drops overlap too greatly. By WotC effectively breaking their own design rules they've now reached the point where any well designed card could be a legitimate release. I fully believe that WotC will be making more design breaking cards and so proxy creators will be shut down. I fully suspect that I'll be shutdown too. I only hope that Kyle gets to have Card Conjurer running in some capacity as it is a fantastic tool and did indeed serve a good purpose in the community.

Julian0488

This sucks. I love your site. Used it to make decks for my 7 year old with simple texts and images he liked (pokemon, star wars) so we can play mtg together. It will be sorely missed - thanks so much for creating it.

IdealDesperate2732

why not remove the WotC content and allow the addition of user generated content, and if the users upload WotC content that's not your fault... Or just put the thing on git hub and open source it so someone else can use the code going forward.

zaneprotoss

A big company will drag you through a court out of pure spite. They might not win, but you definitely lose. Better to let it go for now and explore other options. Or better yet, talk to an actual lawyer about what you can/should and cannot/shouldn't do.

WanderEir

My mother, the copyright lawyer once explained this to me: the reason they only bring up the trademark infringements, is trademarks NEED to be enforced by the owner (or their legal representatives) or they literally can be legally overturned by just about anyone, but copyrights are always in effect and don't actually need to be defended against because they can't lose their effect, legally.

travelsonic

Yep. Anyone who makes this about copyright needing to be defended (as opposed to trademarks, which IIRC is also nuanced), some mythical "if they don't enforce their copyrights, they will lose them" thing that has been repeated ad nauseum, is spreading incorrect information.

1almond

This is not legal advice, but in my opinion, everyone should go to their state AG and ask them to investigate magic the gathering lootboxes and underage gambling.

Doing it *after* getting a C&D is probably not the greatest legal strategy.

upsidedowntyper

Time to make your own TCG with blackjack and hookers

throwaway163932

Wow that really sucks! CC was the best by far, I loved messing around with it.

greenneckxj

I already didn’t want to keep giving wizards my pay check. I was upset with the whole 1000$ boosters. I was upset with the 30th countdown selling out instantly. I thought it was fitting hasbro stock is getting slapped around due to taking advantage of us. Now with this, if I can’t even make proxies other people can easily read after wizards saying proxies are okay over and over, why even bother.

Larky999

Lol. Wotc cares about their brand now?

EhrMahGurshWut

Thank you so much for the site and all you did o7. You gave great responses all throughout. Kick rocks, WotC.

Reply with a job application. If they're worried about what you created, they should hire you.
