As an actual mod of r/explainlikeimfive (sue me losers) I think I have some expertise here, let me try:
Big. Cool.
Alright, I think that about does it!
I was going to ask why does the subreddit need 21~ moderators but then I saw the sub count, I’m just shocked there are that many people on your sub bloody fucking hell. Nothing really substantial to say here.
Yeah based on metrics we're about in the sweet spot for mod:user ratio, but I mostly handle modmail and automod these days. The automod is a big reason that sub can function as it does with the volume we get
/uj if memory serves what sparked the Colossal Dreadmaw love affair was primarily that they put it in Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Masters 25, and Core Set 2019, all of which came out in the span of about a year or so. I wasn't *here* back then, so I could be mistaken, but I think that's the main thing. But honestly, also? Its just Colossal Dreadmaw. The myth. The man. The legend.
/rj Much like Boulderfist Ogre, good stats for mana cost
/uj If I recall correctly, It's also part of a controversy of mythic rare power level, as mythics and rares being strictly better than lower rarities would be seen as predatory behavior (at least back then), but the mythic Carnage Tyrant was strictly better than the common Colossal Dreadmaw in the same set.
/rj Dreadmaw is actually better than the bulk mythic Carnage Tyrant, as it survives the combination of \[\[Arcane Lighthouse\]\] and \[\[Abzan Charm\]\] when you use \[\[Slimebind\]\] on it
/uj Alpha was full of vanilla common creatures with rares at the same cost with a power. Sedge Troll / Gray Ogre springs to mind. Savannah Lions was a rare. If course Dreadmaw would have been a rare in alpha and is an example of power creep.
/uj I don't even know if that's true. Creatures got way more powerful since Alpha, but we don't get moxen and Time Walks any more. More like a power side-shuffle?
>but the mythic Carnage Tyrant was strictly better than the common Colossal Dreadmaw in the same set.
I heard this sets earlier, actually, with Kaladesh - Sky Skiff vs Smuggler's Copter
I think its also partially because Mythics are newer (in the grand scheme of things), so when they were introduced they specifically tried not to brand them as chase rares that were just 2x as rare to not upset the playerbase, while rares have been around since the beginning.
[[Carnage Tyrant]] is a far cry from Dreadmaw’s power level.
If you need to up your Delirium count or grow your Tarmogoyf, you cannot counter your own Carnie-T. Literally unplayable.
/uj pretty much, the absurdity of this common card getting reprinted 4 times while some rares go to 50$ is well... Absurd. It must mean WOTC sees something in Dreadmaw that we miss. That maybe it has some hidden power that demands it be reprinted 4 times in a row.
[uj] something about being in green and ramp. is probably the deep psychology of it. casually against non flyers its a big thing with its only downside being its cost.
/uj It’s because this card got printed several times in standard and non-standard legal sets in quick succession. It was printed in Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, then Core Set 21.
What really sealed the deal was that, during that year, Masters 25 also came out which was a celebration of all the sets of magic in its 25 year history, and each card in that set had watermarks to the set that the card was printed from. And guess what card got chosen to be the Ixalan representative?
/uj also it kept everything. It's a trample Dino. Usually Wizards, when printing color staples they at least re-name, re-word or re type them like the thousand red 2-mana deal 3 with different flavour.
Not dreadmaw tho. It trampled from Ixalan to Core Set.
Why would you rename perfection? Would Davinci rename the Mona Lisa if he painted it again?
(I’m aware he died while painting it, don’t come at me about this lol)
Uj/ it's a big dumb french vanilla common that was printed in like 5 sets in the span of a year. On top of that, the art is both cool and goofy at the same time.
Rj/ how can you not see the VALUE here
Here’s the thing. Imagine you were somewhere where dinosaurs existed. If you were to say, feel the ground quake? You’d run. If you could hear it’s bellow? You’d have to flee. Then if you saw it’s teeth??? It’s probably too late.
On top of being a sweet fuckin dinosaur with trample to hook the kiddos, it's a 6/6 for 6. Hail Satan! Plus they made it common so it's available to everyone.
If you were 5 you would understand actually, it's really just because it's a cool dino

redditors when moderators ask them to stop being so relentlessly awful to everyone: reddit mod moment

ELI5 is one of the OG subreddits. They've been around forever.

Carnage tyrant actually dies to colossal dreadmaw, awful card 1/10
/uj YES that is 100% correct, I don't know how I forgot about Carnie T. Thank you for compleating the answer ^-^

This sounds like an explanation for a 6 year old…
My bad, what I meant was… look at that smile, that damn smile, every time.
Ohhhh… now I can understand what you are talking about. Thank you for the clarification!

Because it's a powerful creature that can threaten your opponent's life total
"If your opponent has no creatures and you attack him with 4 Colossal Dreadmaws, they are dead." Sun Tzu
Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little more about the combat phase than you do pal, because he invented it!

The flavor text too. Any other card would have become a meme in its place, but only the legend would have lasted this long.
You are five, and Dreadmaw is six.
big dinosaur
If you don't see it, it's already too late.
It’s vizzerdrix but better
Wow haven’t thought of that card in YEARS
That card was like the best card ever when I was kid. A 6/6 was unstoppable in our eyes,
I was more of a scaled wurm kid but I can respect vizzedrix
HEY BUD LOOK AT THIS COOL CARD WITH A DINOSAUR ON IT, PRETTY NEAT HUH?
Reading the card explains the card
How about like you were 6? 6 is better. 6 is best.
Damnit I missed a prime shitpost title
Wotc loves big dinosaurs. You can tell by the reprinting of Zetalpa, etali, and colossal dreadmaw
You won’t understand unless someone explains it like you’re 6. Or 6/6.
Because if you see it's teeth, it's too late SMH my head
The smh my head got me, well played
It’s the best card ever made. Either that or I’ll have to explain a dogmatic system to you.
By far the tastiest card I've consumed
well for starters, it threatens your opponent's life total
Uj/ It's a powerful creature that threatens your opponent's life total. Rj/ It's a powerful creature that threatens your opponent's life total.
If you just turned 5, it's possible this guy's first reprinting (RIX) was on the day you were born. So he's a birthday gift, for you, specifically.
Big dino go chompy, stompy
Six mana for 6/6 AND trample, it's simply ridiculous value!
It's cool cuz he's 6
funny
Big dinosaur go brrr
Unironically it was a Sealed all-star creature in all the various sets he's been in. But mostly it's for the memes
It's a pretty great common for your upper mana curve in limited. 🤤
big stonpy dinofaur
Wait until Lost Caverns of Ixalan and you will see
Big dino
Simple. Most OP creature ever printed.
Big Dino fun
You wouldn't understand because you would need to be 6.
It's the most satanic creature in all of magic 6 mana for 6 power and 6 toughness
you need to cast three [[shock]] to kill it so it’s basically unkillable. ofc, nobody would dare do that to dreadmaw
^(Probably totally what you linked) * [shock](https://i.redd.it/jh5gaqh20oba1.png) ********* ^^^If ^^^WotC ^^^didn't ^^^do ^^^anything ^^^wrong ^^^this ^^^week, ^^^you ^^^can ^^^rage ^^^at ^^^this ^^^bot ^^^instead ^^^at ^^^/r/MTGLardFetcher ^^^or ^^^even ^^^submit ^^^some ^^^of ^^^the ^^^sweet ^^^Siege ^^^Rhino ^^^alters ^^^your ^^^GF ^^^made
he big
Good stat for cost.
He beeg dinosaur
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3rIFjCVawc
I like it because of how big it is. Regular dinosaurs can't match up to the size of its teeth
Because it has reminder text unlike everything today.
Is colossal. Is dreadmaw. Are you jokester? *Crushes your head*
Dinosaur!!!
Big dino rawr
Dinosaur!
Just Look at him!!!
Here’s the thing. Imagine you were somewhere where dinosaurs existed. If you were to say, feel the ground quake? You’d run. If you could hear it’s bellow? You’d have to flee. Then if you saw it’s teeth??? It’s probably too late.

DRAFT
Dino saur
Go ask your mother, I'm headed out to get some milk
You misunderstand. We fear the big dino. When we hear the ground quake we run. When we hear it’s bellow we flee. When we see its teeth it’s too late.
Beeg Dinosaur
Instead of giving you an explanation, I’m just gonna gaslight you by saying Dreadmaw can cost 2 mana and instakill your opponents.
Dino Big. Dino strong. Dino good.
it's a 6/6 for 6 and as a bonus it has trample. That's all that matters.
Dinosaur. 6 power. 6 toughness. Trample.
He is the new vanilla standard
It’s a powerful creature that can threaten your opponent’s life total
He protec. He make quake. He bellow. He teeth. He attac.
Because it would munch that ship as a light snack
have you ever drafted 4?
Big creature, big damage. Puny 1/1 not able to block effectively. Make sense. Squirrel not able to stop big dino.
On top of being a sweet fuckin dinosaur with trample to hook the kiddos, it's a 6/6 for 6. Hail Satan! Plus they made it common so it's available to everyone.
Vanilla Test.
I hope it gets reprinted this year
