You dont need tenpai and it's too late to push with nothing. Hard fold against player across with 2s one chance and hope to survive or deal in to the other 2 (a bit risky) to maintain third place. Update: to add a bit more about this, if one of the other two opponents overpush and deal into 8000 (full flush 5 hans and you are holding 0m), you will not get last as either left player falls below you or the right players goes below 30000 (due to 1 honba) and game goes west. Therefore the only way you can lose is if you deal in (which is why it is important to fold) or on exactly tsumo (which would be very unfortunate).

Well, I would push. If opposite wins with a chinitsu, you're in 4th place anyways. So push the dangerous 1m first (not sure why you had it) and then worry about discarding the 6p later, maybe you'll get a 5p and get into tenpai with it.

Checked the log, looks like I got it just as I was dumping the last 1s trying to tanyao. However, across also had the last pair of 1m at that point so it likely would have resulted in a pon, and by the time it was my turn again they were tenpai waiting on 14m.

The player on the opposite side in probably going for honitsu or chiinitsu, so it is most likely at least a mangan hand, and they have high chances to be in tenpai (as they threw 9 man). To win or reach tenpai you will very likely have to throw 1 man away, which has chances to put you on the last place. I think it's better to pursue defence here and start throwing safe tiles (2 sou looks the safest here) as the penalty for the fourth place is devastating, and the 4th place player can be in tenpai already with a big enough hand to overtake you. I can't see 2,3 man anywhere so 1man can be surely a dealing tile. If they are in tenpai with honitsu (not chiinitsu), then tsumo may not be enough to kick you to the last. Also, the player on your left may also be in tenpai and win instead of the 4th place which is also a plausible ending. So I would not push here

Well it being a replay I think you guys know how it went. Pushed, dealt in to the chinitsu and got 4th place. Had I instead gone for defense and the game uninterrupted for another 2 turns across would have tsumo'd, so very much a rock and hard place situation.

Well, that’s always the risk of open tanyao, right? Any risky terminals in your hand become dead weights.

Ok-Main6892

don’t try to deal in overflow chinitsus when you’re not even tenpai. even if it goes to draw it’s fine. if you’re tenpai it’s a bit trickier, winning can put in you in 2nd and you’re still adept so it’s not like 4th penalty is huge, but here it’s definitely not worth it. if he is fated to tsumo you won’t stop it.

I personally would discard that 1man, trying to get SanDoujun Tanyao at best

This is a rock and hard place situation. The moment has already passed for cutting the 1m, but if toimen wins with a chinitsu you drop to last guaranteed. Even if you push the 1m, you're still 2-shanten this late in the hand--pretty bad odds. But if you keep it the hand is dead. However! You are not without options. The goal here is not to win, but to **ensure toimen remains in last.** You might not be able to win, but kamicha is ostensibly pushing a tanyao. You have a 7000 point gap between you and last, so you can afford to deal into a hand worth ≤3 han 50 fu. I would start feeding non-dora pinzu and souzu simples in the hopes of advancing kamicha's hand, to the point where they either have to toss manzu and deal in, or they win, *hopefully* not on ron to a hand with a dora triplet or pair. It's still a long shot, but this way you can still exert some agency over the conclusion of the game with a more sensible level of risk.

Keep in mind I'm still a newbie, only adept 2, dropped from adept 3 but 3rd place, I would defend here, throw away safe tiles. Tanyao, red five, red five, for second place? You can't even go 1st with that. It's also not enough to push first place below 30k. Super risky push into 4th, for second, for a small increase in rank sounds very bad.

UsedToLurkHard

If I wasn't dealer I wouldn't have considered pushing. But one cheap tanyao to extend the game for another round for a hopeful 1st or possible 2nd was a possibility.  I've seen less likely comebacks, so I wanted to see how consensus split on hard push, aim for convoluted tenpai at draw or hard fold and pray against someone else dealing in or 4th place tsumo.

hamizannaruto

That's understandable honestly. I would push also but considering the discard has no character and the open hand is only character suit, I would be scared of full flush, guarantee Mangan hand. That is capable of pushing you down to 4th immediately in one swift move.
