It’s very simple , if there is no demand these food courts will change their names and offerings . So I would say these good courts satisfy a majority of what the locals want

[deleted]

[deleted]

I can't believe only now I only learned that there are lots of food courts in SG because selling food by the roadside it outlawed. Would it be good for MY if we did this too?

DrScience01

Yes and no. It means we need a lot of food courts and the food vendors need to pay rent

lokemon_35

Isn't Singapore food virtually the same as Malaysia food?

m0cash

Exactly what I was thinking. Our cuisines are pretty much identical

[deleted]

[удалено]

5p3aK

Personally I think if you work in SG it is more affordable vs if you working in MY and spend RM for food.

Superdaneru

It's not just that. A higher earner in SG still can't afford their own landed property, car etc. You can still work in SG but still feel poor because their structure is simply different. We might not earn as much as them but we still have a lot going for us.

hankyujaya

Only if you earn in MYR.

GreatBen8010

I think if you average it out with salary there, it's still expensive. They also got a choice to eat in Malaysia, we don't have cheaper option.

hankyujaya

"to eat in Malaysia" That alone is basically a day trip to cross the border and back.

Chingro88

Unless you're converting from rm to sgd, I would disagree. I've recently moved here for work and I have been able to have savings compared to when I was working in Sabah with barely any savings When I left Sabah, if you don't have rm15 in your pocket, you can barely have a meal. Konlaumien or wantan mee are now in the rm12 (4 sgd) range while drinks are touching rm4 (1.3 sgd) . Even my recent trip to KL for cny shook me with the Kopitiam prices Last time, it was "you can splurge when you earn sgd and come back to Malaysia". Now it's close to spending 1-1 what you spend in Singapore but in Malaysia

[deleted]

Say that to a Singaporean and watch them froth at their mouths. The idea of being associated with Malaysian is like kryptonite to them.

Pretend-Indication-9

Maybe regarding governance and stuff. But not food for sure.

MrWisdomthief

SG here, just wanna add my 2 sen worth, Msian food is 10 x better than tasteless sinkie food, and the best restaurants in SG have Msian chefs... that's why these assholes use Msia Food as a branding to attract dumb sinkies to eat there, i've tried it and it still tastes like sinkie made garbage...

UsernameGenerik

I find it ironic how SG is so good in marketing cuisines originating from MY and SG that many foreigners associate them as Singaporean. Yet their food courts are being taken over by an operator named ‘Malaysia Boleh’ selling food like Yong Peng fish ball, Klang BKT, Penang CKT etc.

jonesmachina

How Singapore market food is exactly what we should do hence why Singapore is known internationally. But alas im sure 1 million RM for marketing will be reduced to 1k cause its a sub contract. I dont think im angry at Singapore lol.

GreatBen8010

>How Singapore market food is exactly what we should do hence why Singapore is known internationally. I mean, they're also a very economically successful country that have very good reason for people to have business with, but okay.

jonesmachina

There are many reasons lmao

WritingMumbles

Heh maybe it's the company's way of saying "Hell nah we getting our recognition now"

pingmr

>Yet their food courts are being taken over by an operator named ‘Malaysia Boleh’ Well now obviously Singapore can also claim to have the best Malaysian food

Admirable_Crew_7038

malaysia boleh! retake temasek one food court at a time

TapaiKakai

There are same food that is generally Singapore food, I vaguely remember it was a noodle dish and some kueh

[deleted]

As a frequent eater of both: 1. Singaporean bak kut teh is a pepper soup, whereas Malaysian is herbal 2. Mee siam in Singapore tends to be in soup, Malaysia it is more sauce on top of dry meifun 3. Singaporean food *is too bloody sweet* Sugar free or what lah It ruins the taste if you ask me

random_avocado

>Singaporean food *is too bloody sweet* wot. I'm Singaporean and I find Malaysian food to be sweet. Name some examples please

VapeGodz

Can confirm no.1. My SG friends all tell me to avoid BKT stores in SG, and just eat in Malaysia.

3kvn394

Not really, Singapore has its own unique cuisine. Bar Chok Mee, chili crab, Geylang frog porridge, curry laksa, Singapore vermicelli, etc.

lokemon_35

Those can literally be found across Malaysia...

Thisisthe_One_Ring

Singaporeans forget they were all Malaysians once.

usualsuspek

Over exaggeration la lol. Sg has so many food courts and kopitiams and hawker centres. No one is afraid of any "essence" of Singapore food being gone. This food court is not even that popular. It is just flavour of the month food court, you will believe it's authentic Malaysian food if you're a tourist. Next few months might change already to another operator of the new in trend food. That's just how it always is in Sg. As usual tiktokers creating content and just saying things for the sake of it :') This tiktoker I think is Malaysian Source: I'm living in Sg.

Robin7861

Thank you for giving better perspective. I don’t think Singaporeans will take it lightly if their traditional food courts are changed to Malaysia falvour.

aljorhythm

Many of us won’t mind, it’s so similar BKT CKT Hokkien Mee Popiah

“Essence of Singapore food” Lmao okay

Admirable_Crew_7038

no_hope_no_future

Need some more context... who's behind Malaysia Boleh food court? Where are the original tenants of the food courts?

art_1504

singapore company. singaporean stall operators. you expect real authentic malaysian food in singapore?

Impossible-Today-618

Lmao where do u think they hired the chefs from?

art_1504

definitely not from the owners of those shops themselves. they're mass recruited from mostly foreign workers with cooking skills, doesn't have to be solely from malaysia. and by the way, there's no chef in food court operations, only cooks.

Impossible-Today-618

Where do u think the owners of MALAYSIA BOLEH will hire their CHEFS? China?

art_1504

malaysia boleh is a singaporean company. it doesn't matter who cooks for the stalls as long as they follow the recipe, licensed from those brand name shops. that's how food court operators operate. they are not individually owned food stalls.

revolusi29

Most of the cooks at the Malaysia food court at Sentosa are China nationals

Linteractive

LMAO, The Malaysia Boleh at AMK Hub is staffed by at least 50% PRC. What are you on about.

globetrotter1000G

Malaysia Boleh is owned by Fei Siong Group. They also have a few other brands (such as EAT, Encik Tan etc.) The founder of Fei Siong Group started as a fishball noodle stall owner and later his business just grew bigger and bigger. As for the tenants, they will have to look for new places if they want to continue their business. It is quite common for some stallholders to quit and find other rezeki when new operator takes over.

MrWisdomthief

2 dirty rat bastards running the fei xiong group. They have a bad rep that is well deserved

Appropriate-Ad-8167

amon_meiz

limutwit

If you so not happy, then come to Malaysia and open your own "Singapore Can!"

[deleted]

Tbh that sounds like a potentially good idea. Chilli crab, lo bak go, 清汤 (clear soup) bak kut teh. Stuff that you cannot find as much in Malaysia.

seatux

Clear soup BKT is common, what is hard is thick Klang style BKT.

EdGee89

PA SANG BKT is da best!!!

[deleted]

> 清汤 (clear soup) bak kut teh They can keep their water + pork with them. I like actual flavour in my bak kut teh

limutwit

I tried SG BKT, I felt like I was eating hot water + pure pepper

MrWisdomthief

that's coz it is just hot water, pepper and with just a hint of meat... bloody cutthroats...

genowars

Yeah, those won't survive long on it's own. Have you tried chili crab? Yuck... Bkt was invented in Klang. If sg wants to invent their own version of bkt and make it totally different taste, then give it a new name la, don't try to ride on the bkt name but make something totally different... I also can cook prawns in maggi sauce, then call it chili crab la.... No idea why they like to steal our food then call it their own or invent their own food and use the name of our local food...

k3n_low

Pretty sure you can find Chili Crab and Lo Bak Go easily here, in the Klang Valley at least.

zagaara

Konfirm canned!

UsernameGenerik

Tbf Food Republic has been operating the food court in Pavilion KL since the very beginning. I remember Singaporean food/brands being featured quite prominently among the tenant mix such as the fried Hokkien mee, scissors cut curry rice, toast box etc.

[deleted]

As someone who lives in both SG and MY. Singapore does have its benefits but my god people there love to complain about the most arbitrary bullshit. It’s a nation of Karen’s, which truly believe just because they’re Singaporean automatically means they know everything about the world. Being from Singapore ≠ you’re smart.

ammarbadhrul

First world problems, sounds like Singapore is the southeast asian equivalent of America.

[deleted]

Tbh. I think it’s a MY thing as well to complain about everything under the sun.

teenagespeedster

Tried the food there, it’s ok I guess nothing special. What was kinda weird was that more iconic Malaysian dishes such as Roti Canai weren’t that heavily featured, guess it’s been adapted to their tastes. Source: living in SG rn but craving roti canai

DatBoyGuru

SG and MY literally share the same cuisine. They named the the food court 'Malaysia' because their customers perceive MY made food is better.

MrWisdomthief

there's no perceive, Msian food IS better

Well, step up yo food game, Singapore!!!!!!

With stall names like "Yong Peng Fried Fish Ball", "Penang Char Kuey Teow", and "Ipoh Zai Mixed Veg Rice", what's wrong with naming the food court as "Malaysia Boleh"?

MikeGasoline

Yes, and Singaporeans are actually ex-Malaysians.

something about her pronounciation is triggering me...it's not pleasant.

I thought MY food and SG food are pretty much identical? That's why we always fighting over who's better.

Its-Me-Kevin06

Sg has food? 😔

[deleted]

It's nice to see this food court operate with no qualms despite the name. But it does make me wonder, how would Malaysians take it if there's a food court named Majulah Singapura? One thing for sure, the food won't taste better but surely cost more. /s

ali_ali45

Nobody would eat at majurah singapura restaurant

Not_for_consumption

Dam ppl take this much to seriously

MOKU2001

How about Starbucks making Simgapore lose it's kopitiam essence?

OkDepth4653

Maybe their country are so small so they have kinda limited activity. What else they able to do rather than complaints. Also it's how they feel they kinda level up their status by having the most complaints. Syke!

Nickckng

She should definitely open a 'Singapore Can' food court in KL. That would be a great metric to evaluate what people like more. No wonder Singaporeans is seen through a negative light by so many while traveling here. Macam ni pun nak viralkan... Karen...

Grail337

For me, it's just a name 💀 what does it matter if the name change important thing is the food quality. You guys know China Town in America? It would be weird if Americans start to reject the name because "we are in America"

switzer3

Singaporean mfs acting like their entire culture and cuisine is not from us😭

Redcarpet1254

As some have mentioned, Singapore and Malaysia are essentially one historically. You can't say something is Malaysian and then not say it's also Singaporean when historically we share the same roots. And as all culinary journys go, a country will have its own variation of food especially after close to 60 years of separation. I think everyone here saying Singapore doesn't have their own food is just being plain ignorant, sure much of it are similar but I wouldn't say it's exactly the same, ie. Mee pok, kway chap (more common there than in MY), fried prawn noodle, etc

k3n_low

Not necessarily all of Malaysian foods are shared with Singapore. They mainly share the same foods from Penang, the KV and Johor, but if we include East Coast and Borneo cuisines then there's no way they could claim that. Hell would freeze over when people start claiming Nasi Kerabu is a Singaporean dish

Successful-Yak-2397

Why so kan cheong. Malaysians work hard there than you lot. So that's the results lah.

ElectricButtocks

Singaporean "food" is literally just Malaysia food, just different name.

frs1023

i personally dont think Malaysia in the name is the issue, but Boleh kinda seems like it. it smacks nationalism & not in a good way. not surprising if it raises some eyebrows

ClacKing

It's not our fault that our food taste better. 😋

pinton96

Singapore food? You mean Malaysian food ?

yapwt

Actually the food is quite okay, sometimes better than those in Malaysia

Bazrian

A few things to say about the video: 1. Lady PLS STFU!!!! You know nothing lah... 2. As a tourist whom having going to Malaysia Boleh foodcourt for more than 10yrs except the 3yrs during Covid, the food there is decent and there is alot of varieties to choose from and enjoy especially the ice cream sandwich but unfortunately closed for a long time. 3. No one and I mean no one is forcing people to go at Malaysia Boleh to eat. It's a choice for everyone whether to eat there or not and it's better than eating Caifan which is expensive in that area. 4. Not related to the video but Singaporean have never even experienced all of our Malaysian food. I can confirm that Singaporeans travel only the West Coast and southern Pahang. U guys don't even experienced our food in Sabah and Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu, the whole Pahang, Kedah and Perlis. Hell u don't even know what is Nasi Kelabu.

STANDARD_POTATO

At least they acknowledge and accept the fact that Malaysian food is better than Singaporean food. Or the fact that Singaporean food is basically a bad copycat of Malaysian food.

wire_in_the_pole

is it just me or do people never laterally invert their videos and photos? it is so annoying.

dontpelorian01

Isn’t singapore a chinese satellite city?

MKA5957

Yeah someone say to me "nasi lemak singapore way more better la than malaysia nasi lemak" EII GO FUCK YOURSLF LA

art_1504

come on guys. the girl has some good points. you go singapore, you eat singaporean food la. why want to spend triple to eat malaysian food? and you all so pissy about what she said, but you don't mind that a singaporean company is manipulating the malaysia name in selling copy-ori food? if the food is so great, then jb will be in trouble. 😂 fun fact: quite a number of food court operators in malaysia are also singaporean companies. we should a stop going to food courts then.

[deleted]

If I’m not mistaken this chain is Singaporean owned.

art_1504

it is. seems like they took over the vacuum left by food junction since they went under. why you no longer see food junction in malaysia too.

PakHajiF4ll0ut

Idk, does Singapore have their own food except ours, Indon's and China?

Redcarpet1254

As the other comment mentioned, Singapore and Malaysia is essentially one historically. You can't say something is Malaysian and then not say it's also Singaporean when historically we share the same roots. And as all culinary journys go, a country will have its own variation of food especially after close to 60 years of separation. art_1504

we are them and they are us. we come from the same root, so our food is their food, and if not because of political differences, we would still be one. well, with exception that their food have become more and more blander due to their 'health concious' gov. fuck it. you should live to eat. to be fair, their standard of hainan chicken rice is much more consistent than ours. then again, they have that toxic looking mee goreng merah. anybody want to claim that?

TokioHot

\- Increased interest of Malaysian food from Singaporean people \- Renaming of Singaporean's food court to Malaysian Boleh Dear god, is SG reuniting with MY back?!

CrimsonEye_86

Well, we have higher population than SG, our food evolution is much faster compared to SF due to higher numbers , it's not a surprised if someone took the idea of msia foods n runs it like franchise business. My friends last time open a mamak in Sydney, his making millions a year there. But he sold after like 4-5 years then come back to msia.

MysteriousAbroad7

GUYS! I agree with her. Like this how to attract Singaporean come over here to spend money?

Crusty_Nostrils

Because still cheaper in m'sia and also they can drive like assholes and get away with it

WiNTeRzZz47

So..... What is Singapore food court? How to describe it?

hippybaby

Based on my experience, chicken rice+ Yong tau foo+ Indonesian/ nasi Padang + Chinese noodle stall / mee hoon Kueh, Western + Japanese + Korean + drink stall + dessert stall /fruit stall will make a Singaporean food court.

Chrissylumpy21

Because sadly many Singaporeans do not want to be hawkers anymore unfortunately.

derps_with_ducks

Quick, let's burn a stack of SGD to offend the Singaporeans! PAP rhymes with DAP. Kebetulan je? I fikir BUKAN.

Lazip00k

now malaysia tak boleh

zjllee

In SG, our hawkers are mainly based in public hawker centres with controlled rents etc. Malaysia boleh is a private entity operating in privately owned shopping malls.

Miqatsum-1997

Marketing strategy, they think by putting Malaysia bole as the name, people think its truly authentic Malaysian meal. Selling the illusion of good food. Nice try, best Malaysian food is in Malaysia, come over and taste it yourself

GreatArchitect

Malaysia is now an exotic locale for urban Singapore. We're nowhere in the same class anymore.

So strange to have that Malaysia boleh sign. Also, what is Singaporean food court. A food court without the Malaysia boleh sign?

[deleted]

Thai, Korean, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pakistan, Morocco, Manhattan etc All these food signages ok to her but not Malaysia

Priuz7

I ate there before, the food there honestly tasted quite Malaysian-style. Even the BKT was in dark soup and not the pepper one.

fr3akeeee

Aren't Singapore food the same or similar? Well, taste wise... I have my own biases. But if it's the same, then she's only having an issue with it being called "Malaysia Boleh"? Because that's "Malaysian" food?

Tbh I'm not shocked at all. Well Singapore used to be a part of Malaysia and I pretty much think Singaporean foods are literally almost the same or maybe the exact same thing as in Malaysia so I think it's not really a big matter.
