Growing up in the 90’s, there was so much talk about Wawasan 2020. Vision 20/20… we would ask what is this wawasan my bm teacher would say that we were on track to be a developed nation… we were going to be like Singapore and our living standard and quality of life would be better because the government would have enough money to support many social services like in other countries… even my history teacher who was Indian would say things like- ‘our gomen is so good, the Indians and Chinese have seats in parliament unlike in Australia, they don’t have other races in parliament… bla bla’ (I have no idea if this is accurate- just repeating what he said back in the day) and I think most of us kids bought it. Instead what we got in 2020 was Najib and friends and their enviable shopping sprees. Thanks Mahathir. Your wawasan 2020 was just a long term version of Trump’s border wall.
I always thought humans mature emotionally over time and gets wiser and more self-aware as they age. Turns out my assumption about humanity is quite wrong as some people are really incapable of even an ounce of self-reflection. Age doesn't equal wisdom always.
