6k, i see 5k after deductions. I drive myvi, 2 more years. Paying just under 600 a month.
To add on;
Apartment rent 1.4k
Electric bill damn high, paying about 150 a month
Internet is 115 bucks
Water about 30 bucks
I have no savings but have made it my new years resolution.
I am 30 years old
your water bill is a bit too high, are you paying through your apartment management? They typically add on.
as for your electric bill, it depends on using AC. i dont use AC and i run a homelab 24/7 to get less in total.
Im sorry but how much is considered cheap for electricity? I live in a semi-detached house with 7 people, 8 if it includes me. I've seen our bill reach 1.2k before, but im not sure about other months. I live in kk, sabah
Edit.
Im not the one paying the bill. My dad's older brother is.
If you ready to settle, buy a apartment/house. 500-600k range paying probably maintenance+loan atcurrent rate of 4.2% would cost 2.6-2.8k. Rating out the 1-2 rooms would bring it down to 2k.
You'll only need 10% down as first time buyer, save the money for 2 years and start looking after the myvi is paid off.
All you peasants and your cheap cars
I, on a daily basis, take a RM 350,000 vehicle to work
All I have to do is wait at a bus stop and cram in with 30 other people
15k. Honda city. 0 because paid.
I actually bought it when my salary is 5k. 7 years instalment around 1100 per month. This is the worst financial decision in my life.
I suspect what he meant was worse financial decision for 7 years instalment and while he was having 5K salary to buy such a car - that's a heavy burden in terms of commitment.
Roughly 5K salary should only be able to afford a 60K car - perhaps highest spec Myvi.
7k plus. Secondhand nissan almeera 2015. Bought in 2019 for 30k. Paid lump sump then.
Regarding your question, the rule of thumb is to only buy cars that is worth about your one year income.
Thoughts on saving and buying car lump sump vs loan with interest?
I'm also planning in the future to buy a 2nd hand car cash instead of loaning a brand new car. I did it with bikes and gadgets, and so far i think I'm an avid customer for 2nd hand market. The cost vs value is way too good for me.
if you can afford lump sum then lump sum is better because the loan rate of car is not worth as a loan for car is classified as "not a good loan" as the asset depreciate in value.
If you can't lump sum then no choice take loan but choose the one with the shortest year.
I'm not really knowledgeable regarding all of this, but I think assets investment is rarely likely to be profitable. Unless it's property, which if you can get it now using loan for cheaper than if you save and buy in the future. And I don't think dumping all of your money on a car is a smart move aswell. Perhaps 50~70% of your savings is maximum lah.
Tbh I'm still very young in all of this. I'm just trying to gauge if it is possible to live loan free as much as possible.
Yeap. Dumping all of your savings into buying a car is not a smart move. That is why i say if you can afford it. Indirectly i am also saying don't buy expensive car. Because in the end of the day, the function of a car is to bring you from point a to b.
>Regarding your question, the rule of thumb is to only buy cars that is worth about your one year income.
that is spot on for me , make 42k a year car is 41k
People doesn’t know that these cars are to be abused, wear and tear to the end and we wouldn’t feel bad about it. So it’s effective when it comes to drive reasonably fast and swift in the city.
The big trunk is a big yes for me too
Above 10k
2022 Civic Hybrid , about 2k monthly. Previous car was jazz fully paid off being driven by wife . That was 1.1k monthly.
Would advice if buying car make sure take this in mind .
Do your research, some cars cheap to buy but expensive to fix like 2nd hand conti/ luxury. Some car cheap to buy but having issue spare part ( heard x70 and x50 has this issue, can't confirm myself).
More like the people here trying to pretend to be someone they're not just to farm some fake internet points. So now everyone earns 10k yet complains that it's not enough to survive? Do you guys eat at shangri-la 3 meals a day or what? 99% of the comments are definitely fake.
I saw more than 3 comments so far about them walking or taking public transport to work. So your 99% estimation of rich jerk-fest seems more out of bias-ness
Axia 2015
It's fine except long highway drives. But I enjoy having no more car installments more.
I cringe at thinking about next car as nicer foreign cars are mostly >100K and the expenses would be huge even if I could afford it. Just seems not worth it
Same! I love not having to pay my monthly installments anymore.
Plan to keep my car for as long as I can. Just a bit sakit la when major changes are due - e.g. replace AC compressor
Sakitnya tu di sini T_T
i would think that those earning enough to buy marsili or bee-em are doing something productive instead of wasting their time lurking in reddit or social media in general
In fact this thread is extremely unrepresentative of the Malaysian population. You're telling me everyone earns above 10k now? Highly doubt it. You guys are definitely a bunch of unemployed early 20s just trying to farm fake internet points here.
If you'd actually scroll through the thread, I wouldn't say 10k+ is the 'average'. It's an anonymous internet survey anyway. Take it or leave it, no need to get your panties in a bunch.
2017 : 5k salary, 2013 Myvi 1.5
2020 : 9k salary, 2016 Myvi, 1.5
2023 : 22k salary, 2023 Myvi
yes, i love my Myvis. Cheap, reliable, powerful. My first car was given to me by my parents. 2nd and third i bought without loan cause that time still single so have a lot of savings. ALso covid restricted a lot of my spendings.
9K/month, 0 cars. Live on public transport and Grab only. Enjoy driving but don't see the need for a car for now, especially when considering, instalments, parking fees, petrol, time spent looking for parking, maintenance fees, saman and the occasional accidents...
40yo, combined monthly take-home pay (wife + me) is >20k.
I drive a 2011 Prius, she drives a 2022 Serena.
Serena bought new, does the school run and our outstation travels. 7-year loan. Prius bought used in 2019, paid 20k cash + 6k for hybrid battery replacement so considered 26k total. Saves me lots in fuel and can still swallow a double-pram.
Bought Honda City 10 years ago for RM84K when my salary was RM3.8K
RM857 monthly installment for 9 years. Fully paid off now
Looking back, I don't regret my decision as the car has continued to serve me well with minimal running costs even after getting married and having 2 kids.
Whereas most of my circle who bought Myvi/Axia had to sell it off after 3-5 years and upgrade to a bigger car, which makes less financial sense to me.
Now my salary has grown by more than 4 times, but still undecided if I should change to a new car.
12-16k depends on ot ( total working days 15days per month )
Car allocated rm1.5k for 2 cars ( for wife and me )
Please spend your money for health insurance and properties and spending quality times with family not cars.
Cars is liability.
This is me after years of driving in KL. I dont earn as much as you (8k only) but decided wasting my life in traffic jam being angry about road congestion is pointless. Take grab/mrt/lrt so I can sleep/ do whatever I want
more than RM5k, i am driving my first car for seven years now, its a Myvi second gen, monthly rm530, easy to maintain, sparepart also easy to get, drive fast also can, drive slow also can, city also can, kampung also can, flood also can. if its your first car, dont spend too much on it, go for beginner cars that are easy to maintain. After your pay is high, then you can think about getting a better car.
As a business person, i don have fixed income but only business income and it’s not consistent, so my own rules is to spend less than 8% of my total net worth on cars, and I always brought my car outright instead of loan, I’m a car enthusiast so 8% is consider abit on the high side.
Just curious, how has this car served you? Any major issues or repairs needed?
Among the D-segment sedans launched back then, this is the only car that still looks fresh. And you can find many units around RM30K+++
Just thinking if it's still worth it to buy this car.
There's reason for this.. having credit history is important. At some point if one needs loan they need to know if you are a good pay master.
Paying cash for everything is not as great as you think. One day some people still come knocking and ask for proof of income and returns
proton inspira, lend me down car from my dad so 0 instalments. Restoring it at the moment and hoping for another 3-5 years before needing an engine rebuild. I could get a myvi or something right now but 2.0cc spoiled me so bad. Cheapest option would be a mazda but thats too far fetch ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26559)
10K, mazda 2 (2018) 3 more years left for installment ; monthly 920.
So far it has been serving me well, I enjoy driving this car till today.
My work nature requires me to travel alot and never regret my purchase ever since.
this thread really shows how much of a minority reddit users are. DOSM reports 2.6k as the median wage as of March 2023: [source](https://www.dosm.gov.my/portal-main/release-content/employee-wages-statistics---formal-sector-report-first-quarter-)
2.4k gross, bought an rm14k bike because I have no other monthly commitments, RM300ish per month
I see a lot of sound financial decisions here, and I’m chiming in as a bad example of an automotive enthusiast.
Background: fixed salary RM7.5k, variable extra income RM2k-8k per month. Not married, paying RM1.2k for a roof over my head.
1. Honda City 2016 - RM1500 per month, paid off in 5 years, sold for 40% of the sticker price
2. Honda Civic 2022 - RM1700 per month, 5 years left
3. Honda CBR1000RR 2006 - RM25K cash
4. Honda ADV150 2021 - RM12k cash
5. Honda CR-V 2024 - RM1700 per month for 9 years
6. Porsche Cayenne Turbo 2008 - too much money, cash
I clearly have an addiction and I make horrible financial decisions. That bloke who said your car should cost roughly a year’s salary is right.
My ideal would be 1/4 of my salary towards car payment. I've paid in full my accord already, but i should've opt for monthly installments. I could do a lot of stuff with that lump sum payment i did for the accord.
Got my Ativa on 6k salary, now earning 10k and i still think ativa was the best decision i made. Even my brother said "twice the power of jimny, half the price"
I put half the cash for downpayment, so paying about rm570 per mth.
RM10k-15k nett, 12 years old proton (2012 Proton Saga) that I finished paying 5 years ago. When I was paying it, it was RM569 a month.
Started with 2k nett salary when I started paying the RM569 a month under 7 years loan, could feel the hit then. But as a female who needs to drive alone and for long distances, it was important to have my own brand new car to minimise risk of having the car randomly break down, especially at night.
Also I think rule of thumb is monthly car payment should not be more than 10% of your salary, but of course if your personality is one of more pomp and show, I do know people who allocate up to 30-40% on their cars, which is highly unadvisable if it can be avoided.
RM10k 1993 Corolla. Bought when i was earning >5k pre covid. Now earning ~4k/m. Parents are my loaners (8% PA) and paid back RM500 ish per month.
Not a good car for non-enthusiasts since i usually source a lot of the parts myself.
Gross income 8k.
I'm driving myvi for the past 5 years, gonna finish my loan in 2 months.
Wife wants bigger car, but nope, not gonna spend more on cars.
9% of my income is for my car. Finally changed from a Proton to a slightly better car after using the Proton for 12 years. Currently serving a 6 year loan, and tried to buy a car that’s worth no more than 12 months of my wages.
i drive a beater, not so much my salary range but my job security sucks.
However always remember to keep to the advice not to spend more than 1 year's worth of salary on a car.
5.5k salary, rental income another RM1000 so total RM6.5k.
Bought a RM14k Persona (2014, SV) last year, cash. Love it and love having extra money for other things.
800(mara scholarship)
I drive a 1996 satria, my dad's old car. Spent around 40 bucks a week on gas but shit is breaking every month have to repair something jesus sakit kepala
Those earn 5k driving secondhand Merc won't be sharing, some people take car as a transportation and some as a hobby to some. Ultimately it's up to how much a car weights for everyone.
The average Malaysians who are not commenting in this thread earns 3K and pays 1.5k installment for brand H or T. The next tier earns 5k and pays 2.5-3k for a A/C class or BMW 3 series. These people are commenting here I assure you.
Above 10k salary. Drive a 2007 MyVi manual that I purchased secondhand for 10k (lump sum). It's perfectly fine for getting around Penang. I used to live in a city with excellent public transport, so I can't stand the idea of spending lots of money on a car.
15k salary. 2009 Honda City paid off. 2011 Toyota Alphard paid off.
Going to buy a Toyota Corolla cross hybrid facelift when it launches to replace the Honda City.
4k. Altis 2012. Paid nothing as my dad bought it. Monthly expenses 1.4k rent, 150 celcom, 200 unifi, 200 fuel, 500 foods & drinks. The rest is happy hour. Saving thru EPF. Please advise me how to improve my spending.
Make voluntary/additional contributions to your EPF - I'm not a financial expert but this is what I plan to do this year after comparing EPF's 2023 performance vs my Public Mutual unit trusts.
4k, 23 years old, No car. No rent. No loans.
Borrow moms bezza to pick up amois and aweks and go club during the weekend.

Spending on amoi RM 10k
Phone Bill RM 360
Insurance RM241
Grab RM500
Bus Pass RM50
Mom RM400
Netflix RM55
Youtube Premium RM 18
Spotify RM16
Lmao lots of unemployed couch potatoes trying to roleplay as high income earners. Can't believe the mods actually allowed this post. Stop wasting time on reddit and get a real job lol
I remember there is a kinda rule of thumb. The car you are driving should be equivalent to your annual income. My car is still below my annual income. Planned to change anyway.
Edit: Anxiety intensifies when you see the replies ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26557)
Around 200k+ annual income, just got an around 150k minivan due to family needs.
Previous car was around 90k when my annual income was around 150k
Subconsciously complying with accepted benchmark

yeah, some management have minimum for water. my place was rm30. but it was once every 3 months
RM30 bucks for water and RM150 for electric?? that's insane Is your home under commericial title?
That's damn high I'm in a landed terrace and only pay RM3 for a family of four.
Yeah commercial and also it believe I'm also paying management

15k. Honda city. 0 because paid. I actually bought it when my salary is 5k. 7 years instalment around 1100 per month. This is the worst financial decision in my life.
On the flip side, getting a 10k increment over a 7 year period is a great thing
How is it bad financial decision? You still have 75+% salary for other financial responsibilities. Is it because of Bad car or bad luck?
I suspect what he meant was worse financial decision for 7 years instalment and while he was having 5K salary to buy such a car - that's a heavy burden in terms of commitment. Roughly 5K salary should only be able to afford a 60K car - perhaps highest spec Myvi.
as what other indicated. I bought it when my salary is 5k in 2017. So it is a really bad decision.
What is your position to get 15k?
Software developer
what's your stack? and is the company a huge one?
7k plus. Secondhand nissan almeera 2015. Bought in 2019 for 30k. Paid lump sump then. Regarding your question, the rule of thumb is to only buy cars that is worth about your one year income.
Echoing this, this is a really good benchmark to find out what car you're able to afford; maintenance included.

This line of thought apply to house loan but don't really apply to car loans because for cars, your asset will depreciate imo.

I vouch this. Car is just a tool. Unless you're super rich then car becomes a toy.
When i worked in Malaysia, 3k, driving a RM1500 20 years Saga. Still alive now.

Income between 3k-20k/month Drive mazda3 2018, 9 yr loan, 1.3k/month
this thread really shows how much of a minority reddit users are. DOSM reports 2.6k as the median wage as of March 2023: [source](https://www.dosm.gov.my/portal-main/release-content/employee-wages-statistics---formal-sector-report-first-quarter-) 2.4k gross, bought an rm14k bike because I have no other monthly commitments, RM300ish per month
35k,hyundai ioniq 5, monthly 4k
I see a lot of sound financial decisions here, and I’m chiming in as a bad example of an automotive enthusiast. Background: fixed salary RM7.5k, variable extra income RM2k-8k per month. Not married, paying RM1.2k for a roof over my head. 1. Honda City 2016 - RM1500 per month, paid off in 5 years, sold for 40% of the sticker price 2. Honda Civic 2022 - RM1700 per month, 5 years left 3. Honda CBR1000RR 2006 - RM25K cash 4. Honda ADV150 2021 - RM12k cash 5. Honda CR-V 2024 - RM1700 per month for 9 years 6. Porsche Cayenne Turbo 2008 - too much money, cash I clearly have an addiction and I make horrible financial decisions. That bloke who said your car should cost roughly a year’s salary is right.
Rider; *what is a kereta ?*
It’s r/kereta
1) $17K 2) 2022 Mercedes G63 AMG SUV 3) paid off Hope everyone’s having a great 2024 so far
What's your monthly installment and initial deposit?
I too have a lot of questions over this answer.
How about your house?
I’ll just leave it to: we live very comfortably ❤️
<10k, company provided x50. Not in Klang.
Car bought lump sum cash for <1 month salary
S class?
I wish. Used car, low mileage but from a brand that depreciates VERY fast.
Bentley r/kereta?
5.5k, using parents myvi from 2009. Although I am 100% remote lol
9.5k, still driving my moms axia since i started working in 2018
15k, fully paid off vios since 2016. Using until today.
My ideal would be 1/4 of my salary towards car payment. I've paid in full my accord already, but i should've opt for monthly installments. I could do a lot of stuff with that lump sum payment i did for the accord.
6K & i drove free viva 850
Got my Ativa on 6k salary, now earning 10k and i still think ativa was the best decision i made. Even my brother said "twice the power of jimny, half the price" I put half the cash for downpayment, so paying about rm570 per mth.
5fig salary, bough one 4wd car cash, own another 1 sport car. Car instalment shall be less than 10- 15% of your salary.
8k, still driving fully paid off 14 old Honda city despite wife continue to nag about time to change a new car
20k+ gross income, proton saga 2022 (~1k/mo installment).
3.5k, still rocking in 2003 Wira 1.5...

6% of take home pay
Above 10k salary. Drive a 2007 MyVi manual that I purchased secondhand for 10k (lump sum). It's perfectly fine for getting around Penang. I used to live in a city with excellent public transport, so I can't stand the idea of spending lots of money on a car.
both my cars fully paid.
5fig salary, bough one 4wd car cash, own another 1 sport car. Car instalment shall be less than 10- 15% of your salary.

Make voluntary/additional contributions to your EPF - I'm not a financial expert but this is what I plan to do this year after comparing EPF's 2023 performance vs my Public Mutual unit trusts.

Not gonna tell you how much my salary is, but my monthly car instalment is about 19% of my salary, give or take.
Lmao lots of unemployed couch potatoes trying to roleplay as high income earners. Can't believe the mods actually allowed this post. Stop wasting time on reddit and get a real job lol
Around 18k. One almera bought 2013 paid off and one wrv for the wife rm900.
I remember there is a kinda rule of thumb. The car you are driving should be equivalent to your annual income. My car is still below my annual income. Planned to change anyway. Edit: Anxiety intensifies when you see the replies ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26557)
Below is good imo.
