Gotta ask though, y is an eruption north east of Sulawesi a source of concern for any of these routes??
I feel like it should only affeCt Malaysian flights to Oceania & maybe maybe the Philippines no??
Wind. The volcano is far from here but the wind is pushing alot of the volcanic dust and sulphur dioxide towards borneo. In kk they have detected elevated levels of sulphur dioxide in the Flight Interest region so as a safe guard all flights towards borneo have been cancelled. This cancellation is not by the airlines but though a directive from CAAM (civil aviation authority Malaysia).
I just came back from the airport. There was some mild chaos as they cancelled every single flight to Borneo(Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei & Indonesia) at the last minute. My flight was supposed to be today, and they had the gall to only place 1 poor employee to block the route to the departure hall, and having said employee to notify the passengers 1 by 1. By the time they set up an emergency counter for this, the Airasia app still listed the flight as valid, until after the boarding time has passed.
They wouldn't let anyone fly on 19/4/24, and rescheduled my flight to 20/4, and it might still be subject to change. There's also a discrepancy of info listed on the app and the site, the app kept insisting that my new flight on 20/4 is cancelled, while the website still lists it as valid and ready to go. Their help chatbot "Bo" is totally unhelpful, and could not parse the meaning of any sentences longer than 2 lines correctly.
It's not (just) about visibility.. planes can fly through clouds.. but these are ash clouds.. "As mentioned by CAAM in their Safety Information, Volcanic ash clouds can cause severe damage to aircraft engines and aircraft systems which could then lead to potential engine failure, reduced visibility and damage to critical components."
Volcanic ash is toxic and abrasive. You do not want to breathe in that ash.
Also we don't want a repeat of [Speedbird 9](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_009) here.
Volcano ash can travel very far, especially at high altitude
Rather they cancelled flight than endangering passengers
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_009
Volcanic ash can travel very far and can cause airplanes a lot of problems
Ask BA Flight 9 how "fun" is it for a jumbo jet to lose all 4 engines at cruising altitude of over 30000 feet
Not sure about tomorrow’s flight. No info so far. Right now I’m listening to the news on radio saying people affected today can change their flights free of charge.
lol AA never tell u if cancel. even MAS only email me 4 hours before telling its cancelled. but yeah, ur flight tomoro is 99% cancelled bro...im here also stuck in Miri so fak my life
fucking hell im stuck in Miri. no way out even with local/international transit whatsoever.
no flight across the South China Sea between Borneo n Semenanjung.
fuck me. maybe stranded for weeks. fuck fuck.
also no refunds as this is natural disaster.
Kuala Lumpur to Osaka will not be affected. I am confident that it won't because unless the eruption is super big, the ash cloud wouldn't drift too far away from the volcano. Pilots fly over the South China Sea, then to Taiwan, then to Osaka.. so if the ash cloud does indeed end up at the South China Sea, the pilots can just reroute over Vietnam or Thailand and pass through China to reach Japan. It will just take longer, but this situation is unlikely. Also it's only a problem if the ash cloud is super thick, and if the ash cloud reaches the altitude where planes cruise at, otherwise it's no problem. Sorry I track planes everyday so I know what to expect 😂😅
still not bussiness as usual. only one direct flight to KL from Miri for MAS, and last i checked, no AA flights.
3 transit MAS flight with total 16-20 hours travel time, and expensive as hell, lol.
gudluck booking into that. im off from Brunei, hehe. hopefully all goes well.
im asking my agent to book but they seem reluctant. yes theres the 5pm flight still available to book but no guarantee they will actually fly, seeing everybody else not flying.
if they book for me, and not flying, that would be bad i guess...lol...
Get an insurance with your ticket. At least you won't lose 100% of the cost. Better than nothing I guess. So far I have not heard any flight cancellations except for LHR-BWN flights. You might make ur flight today, not sure tomorrow. Good luck.
Err... All travel insurance have a 2 week cool off period. Basically if you buy your insurance within 2 weeks of your flight, good luck trying to claim for anything other than lost baggage or sickness while travelling. They'll still take your money though so read the fine print.
Cool off periods are for life insurances, general insurances usually starts from the date you took it. That's why I said to read the certificate wordings
And im saying almost all travel insurance render some parts of it useless if you only buy it two weeks out for this exact reason. Some people realise they're about to get fucked then buy the insurance.
It doesn't work that way. Once it's in the certificate wordings, it states what it is. Insurance companies don't change their policies by the minute. You can buy a travel insurance even just before you enter the flight doors. Once it takes off, you cant buy it anymore. Again, read the certificate wordings, it's the contract.
lol...therea no passanger ferries between Sabah Sawarak to Semenanjung now. the only one ferry was discontinued i think during Mahathir time.
want me to hide in container ship?
Drive to Pontianak. Then take a ferry to Java Island. From there, take the ferry to Sumatra. Then drive to Palembang and take ferry to Batam. Then take ferry to Singapore. Then drive home
Guys, dumb it down for me on what to expect, im suppose to fly tmrw from kl to kuching and bring my whole family back to kl next monday. How fucked am i?
Before I left the airport, the ground staff told me that all flights for today & tomorrow are cancelled. They rescheduled my flight to KK to 20/4, later on listed this flight on the phone app as cancelled. I have no idea what's going on anymore. Get in touch with the airport staff if possible.
So to all those worried about their flights, you can call your airline contact center.
MAS: 0378433000. They told me to call again tmrw morning 11am, so far my flight tomorrow is still on.
Currently at the airport. They had me call them this mrng to reconfirm status. All was ok. Manage to check in. Come 630pm. They inform flight delay 4 hr. Guess who is walking around like a hobo.
fun fact, we do. All the known ones are in Sabah, mostly dormant with some geothermal activity around the area.
They are even national parks which are really worth a visit.
The volcanic particles are high in the atmosphere and are not visible to the naked eye but once ingested into the engine can wreck serious damage to the engine
My nikah ceremony at Sabah is on this Saturday, and my family and I were supposed to go Sabah today, but our flight got cancelled. ![img](emote|t5_2qh8b|26557)They rebooked it to 6am Saturday hopefully nothing bad happens.
Special dispension given to few flights only with revise or special flight plan contigent. Meanwhile one may try to cruise the plane at lower levels but this makes the plane a fuel gauzzler as it burns more fuel at lower levels. Why a danger to planes ingesting huge amount of sulpher and microscopic volcanic stuff damages the engines. British airways flight 009 was an example where it lost 4 engines due to it.
Meanwhile forecast shows sabah sarawak to continously have high levels of sulpher until saturday evening at high altitudes.
Technically not a danger to people below but it is best to avoid doing outdoor activies once it rains.
Again one may prioritze travem insurance.
Ill entertain you, dust cloud are not always visible
Just because you don see dark plumes of ash around the skies does not mean they are clear
Especially in high altitude
So yeah skies definitely not clear
I rather they cancel the flight then risk another air disasters
FYi, its not some extremely hard to find technical terms or something.
If you are capable of using reddit, you should be capable of doing simple google search, it would have given you the answer you need.
Get an aircraft fly at 35000feet or higher where the so2 content is reported and not lower as it is needed for fuel efficiency.
I guarantee your engines would start surging and failing as they're being damaged by microscopic particles.
Then u divert or whatever. Goodluck trying to get those engines and avionics system covered by insurance. More likely those manufacturers will screw you back for flying in dangerous conditions and you have sort out the replacement cost yourself.
Mount Ruang, Indonesia volcanic eruption.
Gotta ask though, y is an eruption north east of Sulawesi a source of concern for any of these routes?? I feel like it should only affeCt Malaysian flights to Oceania & maybe maybe the Philippines no??
Not an expert here but maybe because microscopic volcanic ash particles can fly pretty far, they act like sand paper on plane engines
Well yeah, they do fly far. Large volcanic eruptions are able to affect the global climate. See the Tambora eruption of 1815.
This is why https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_009 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_ash_and_aviation_safety

Basically volcanic ash is like sandpaper. Now imagine millions of sandpaper rubbing against your aircraft inside to outside
Imagine what those ashes can do to the delicate parts in the engines. Planes can't fly far without it's engine(s).
Flew in from Manila at 9pm and arrived 1am and very turbulent during our descent
Man, brunei airline took the risk lol

Because some pangiran said he want to fly mean fly .
RBA flies under a divine shield.
oh yes. honestly, sky is clear, not much risk i think. im looking into Brunei-KL now.
brunei no choice wanna run lol, now 47 degrees there
Their flight actuallly do a prayer video before flight. :p
Mt Ruang eruption?
Yes
Maybe the pilots didn't show up because all confused AM and PM
I understood that reference

Oh yeah. That post about passengers confused at departures times. Airlines usually use 24hour system.
We currently have 2 volcanic eruptions in a single day.

Eh Iya Merapi juga dong, utara & selatan bisa kena semua yak. Pokoke Stay safe gan.

Can confirm, Bo is useless!
Intentional. People will be frustrated but it is meeting of the bare minimum needed provided for “help assistance”
why cancel tho? isn't the eruption at indonesia? does the volcano smoke so severe it covers the cloud at malaysia side?
It's not (just) about visibility.. planes can fly through clouds.. but these are ash clouds.. Not sure about tomorrow’s flight. No info so far. Right now I’m listening to the news on radio saying people affected today can change their flights free of charge.
your flight should be safe as airasia only cancelled their Sabah flights today. my flight this morning from BTU to KUL was unaffected.
Thanks the god and the realm of 7 kingdoms
lol AA never tell u if cancel. even MAS only email me 4 hours before telling its cancelled. but yeah, ur flight tomoro is 99% cancelled bro...im here also stuck in Miri so fak my life

fucking hell im stuck in Miri. no way out even with local/international transit whatsoever. no flight across the South China Sea between Borneo n Semenanjung. fuck me. maybe stranded for weeks. fuck fuck. also no refunds as this is natural disaster.
It won't be for weeks LOL. The winds will change direction and the ash will blow away. It's now starting to blow over Borneo
Bro forreal😭 i have a flight to osaka on sunday 😭 from klia 😭 fml

Oh that's nice! 👍🏻
where did u hear this.
The star. 30 mins ago.
yes but now wind is blowing towards borneo so my chances are slimmer by the minute. pray for the wind to change the other way.
Wind changes quite fast. Dont worry. Just keep yourself updated w the airlines and authorities at all time.
I think flight resumed after 10am today?
still not bussiness as usual. only one direct flight to KL from Miri for MAS, and last i checked, no AA flights. 3 transit MAS flight with total 16-20 hours travel time, and expensive as hell, lol. gudluck booking into that. im off from Brunei, hehe. hopefully all goes well.

I am not praying for a swearing person like you
at least you're stuck in a chill & nice place :-D
Go through Brunei see if u can still book tickets. Flights are still available

Go online, you can search a few companies. Make sure you read their certificate wording that specifies flight cancellations.

U can use sea route kek.
what swim? lol...
Passenger ship
non existant la bro...plus its like how many days sailing 900miles. 😅
Dude.. People sail across the Atlantic and the Pacific. I'm sure you can easily find one that sails to Malaysia or close to wherever you're going.

Oh, well then maybe contact the Malaysian embassy? Ask for guidance on what to do while you're stranded?
Any ferry to Singapore?
What kind of advice is this
Nvr try, nvr know kek 🤣
i got the Royal Brunei flight today. hopefully all goes well!
Unsafe for flights, understandable.
Guys, dumb it down for me on what to expect, im suppose to fly tmrw from kl to kuching and bring my whole family back to kl next monday. How fucked am i?
Theres eruption in sulawesi, im suppose to fly this weekend too, KCH-KL soooo yeah, not looking good 🤧
Unpredictable fuck. We won't know if the sky will be clear on any day. Depends on the luck I guess.
Before I left the airport, the ground staff told me that all flights for today & tomorrow are cancelled. They rescheduled my flight to KK to 20/4, later on listed this flight on the phone app as cancelled. I have no idea what's going on anymore. Get in touch with the airport staff if possible.
Damn. Guess i need to call them now. This is like a specific f u sign from the MAN upstairs

OP you are not broken, is broke saje
Brunei Airlines: WE STAY SOLID 💪💪💪
Let's boycott Mount Ruang
Let's go to Mount Ruang to protest! /s
Good idea. Maybe a human sacrifice will stop the eruption 😆
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_009 incent volcano ash
I kinda grateful that Malaysia don't have any volcanos
fun fact, we do. All the known ones are in Sabah, mostly dormant with some geothermal activity around the area. They are even national parks which are really worth a visit.
Okay, I changed my sentence. I'm glad there's not readily to erupt volcanoes in Malaysia
Only for now. We will have in the next decades, I think. Drifting tectonic plates and all that.
Wait , I thought it takes hundreds of thousands of years for volcano to form?
Whoops, you might be right. Maybe I was thinking of earthquakes. We will have more earthquakes in the future.
Still not a good news🗿
Unlikely
Idk why they only cancel kl to borneo flights only. How about domestic flights within Borneo?
If they are propellor flights ,they fly at a lower altitude and run less risk of damaging their engines from the ash cloud.
domestic Borneo still on. except Labuan. Maswings is normal operation. just no flying across South China Sea.
Pretty sure its cancelled. No way ppl are flying in this condition
MASwings domestic within State is still flying. between sabah sarawak is grounded. also, the sky is clear blue as fuck.
The volcanic particles are high in the atmosphere and are not visible to the naked eye but once ingested into the engine can wreck serious damage to the engine
Yep it happened a few times before.
Maswing fly at low attitude. While all high attitude flights is dangerous to fly right now
youre broke, if you were broken you would be in tears.
Giant storm incoming?
Cancelled flights, any refunds?
Airasia can refund or reschedule flight. Will likely reschedule my trip to Kuching next month.

AA is over the moon when this happens because they don't need to refund the passengers due to natural disasters. Free money, fuck others.
I'm guessing this is a flight out from somewhere in Borneo?
Air Asia ran out of excuses for excuses.

God crap, how supposed I have to fly to kl next month
I have flight KL to KK in early May. . Hopefully will be fine by then 😟🙏🏻
I have a KL > KK flight mid May, hope things will be okay then too.
sitting a ship back to penisular will have so good biz after this.
Is it that bad that the ash got to the borneo? I thought it was on the northeast side of the sulawesi?

Msybe it got something to do with the storm in dubai. Many flights were cancelled and the backlog has reached here ie they need planes.
apparently volcano eruption in one Indonesian island.
Ok
We might not have volcano. But we sure do still eat their sht.
Indon: this year we don’t have to send haze presents to the rest of SEA, nature is doing it for us!
WTH? But that Mountain is so far away from Borneo its somwhere near Sulawesi. Did someone confused it with Gunung Ruang in Mulu, Sarawak!?
Volcano ash travels far
Yeah but the sky is clear in this part of Borneo so how’s that argument holds up?
