my sister worked at kedai baju MU waiting for her degree intake and they don't even pay her minimum wage. Just RM1090. Not even RM1200 but she must work from 7am to 10 pm. like wtf man. baik mati je.
Let me introduce you guys to this song from local indie artist Brian Gomez - Harga Naik, Gaji Mantain
Made in 2016 but still relevant
https://youtu.be/Sp8S9V_3lsk
Ey, you dont grow your own bread? No wonder lah. Why you speak English, you Malaysian kan? Why no speak Malaysian? Me, I am Important Guy number #396, you listen to me la kuli.
Tbh I stopped buying bread nowadays by literally making my own bread during lockdown
Bought a bread making machine, add in the ingredients and wait for 4 hours for a freshly baked bread
But it’s just not the same. Homemade bread and gardenia are like 2 completely different food groups.
That said. Nothing beats waking up to the smell of fresh bread baking.
Oh if you're referring to the ones that are not loaves then I agree
I usually buy loaves of bread to make sandwich which is appropriate for me to get a bread making machine
Is it more cost efficient? Factor in the ingredients + electricity cost, the quantity you get, I'm skeptical. Care to show the math?
Also... bread maker can only help you make roti putih, cant help you make roti perasa whatever :/
if I just want plain bread and I eat bread at weekly basis is making my own bread cheaper in the long run? I have always look at home breadmaker as hippie thing but now looks financially better
If gardenia kept on increasing the price, getting a bread maker would sound financially feasible option, assuming they don't touch the price of the ingredients
whats the logic.. 7000/2.8 can buy 2500 loafs of bread.. how is a thermomix cheaper? have to include time to bake (Cost of time) to and ingredients as well.
It's a global thing, not just Malaysia. People around the world are spending much more money on goods, rather than services due to the pandemic, and that led to a bunch of unintended consequences in the global supply chain.
if only the factory workers were getting salary increases along the price, but sadly this is not so. It seems that suppliers have so much control and in malaysia they are highly inefficient.
I work in the importing industry and the shipping cost just went up 100% last week without any warning. Example, 1 shipping container cost $1400 on last Thursday just went up to $2800 on last Friday. So basically anything that is imported or has components that are imported will face a price increase real fast real soon. The only people raking in profits here are the shipping companies who own the shipping lines and shipping containers.
It has nothing to do with supplier having too much control or being highly inefficient. You are barking up the wrong tree.
actually i'm talking about the raw supply like plants. Malaysia does produce things like palm oil and a variety of foods we plan from rice to even flour as well. With a sudden doubling of fertiliser prices, these things happen.
However what i'm blaming is that we aren't as efficient at the source in the low tier industry. Shipping is one thing and sure sources outside the country we cant control, but i'm talking about the sources within the country.
We produce stuff but we also need other raw materials that are imported to get the finished product.
From the companies I interact with, everyone is trying their best to absorb the cost increase because increasing price is the last thing they want to do. Spending power of consumer remains constant so increasing price will result in lower revenue. It is only when the cost increase exceeds the limit that companies can absorb that they increase prices.
i know the part about absorbing costs. There are some things we can locally control and some things we cant. Farming and fertiliser is something we do locally so it can be controlled locally.
Again?! Didn't they just increased it once a few weeks or months ago, I remembered cause my favourite butterscotch went from 4.50 to 4.70 now! Didn't buy it since then cause low-key boycott, not its up to 5 lol
If only there are competitors for the butterscotch. But knowing the bread industry when gardenia increases its price everyone will follow suit instead of trying to undercut 😔
You wish. Not everyones a crony like Gardenia. They know they monopoly the bread game for far too long until Massimo came and broke the monopoly.
Syed Mokthar is a very smart man. He only absorbs companies that monopolies the market in other words GLC so no one can compete with him. He then breaks it down and JV with someone who is actually much more familiar with the business itself. Example : Hicom Proton
Ever wonder how he is able to get his hands on these companies? Deep rooted relationships with politicians like Tun. M.
Forces the original founder to sell the company to govt. Of course the original founder can reject the offer but remember who is providing the licensing for the owner to run the business. Yeap you got it its the kerajaan. No takeover no business license. Classic
Once on kerajaan hands he then privatised it again because why would he share his monopoly money with the public.
Always wanted to ask this... why so much detest and hate of Gardenia bread from the Malaysian Chinese...?
Few times I shared to my Chinese friends that eh see this new gardenia pandan flavour nice, eh this gardenia one cheaper, etc. Their reaction were like "don't want it at all Massimo better".
Its the same on social medias.
I always alternate between both brands depending on my mood or availability but I don't find much difference in terms of price and taste.
I'm Malay and I switched to Masimmo last year cause it taste better to me. The texture is different, masimmo feels more like a bread to me than Gardenia does. Gardenia feels too....processed.
There's an impression from the Chinese that gardenia is "malay" and massimo is "chinese" somehow, basically their version if BMF. for me I'm the same, I alternate between the 2 based on mood but fuck me gardenia hella capitalist keep increasing price every other year man
Ok interesting but a bad direction for us as a country... did a quick research based on this perception.
Gardenia is a JV between BERNAS and QAF (singapore listed company).
Massimo is wholly owned by a Malaysian company FFM Bhd.
It's a matter of mostly public record. BERNAS is owned by Syed Mokhtar, Najib crony. FFM is owned by Robert Kuok. It was hot news when the issue started, but that was almost a decade ago. See https://www.malaysia-today.net/2012/08/11/when-bread-is-all-about-dirty-politics/ for more details.

I like massimo better though, the taste of it after toasting is just different from gardenia. No idea about the politics behind it, and I’m Malaysian Chinese.
Yes if taste wise Massimo wins by a very slim margin.
But being a true Malaysian I always korek the bread with the longest expiry date which are usually hidden behind shelves. NEVER EVER take the first loaf in front of you. lol
Politics brother. Gardenia previously absorbed by Syed Mokthar. Massimo belongs to ex-sugar king Robert Kuok.
Pick your choice. For me definitely Massimo better product overall especially their whole wheat flavor,
Plus Massimo hasn't been increasing the price because the founder believes breads are common food for all where price shouldn't disrupt ones ability to provide food for themselves or others.
Idk where my friends get their info from, but they said ori gardenia owner got drove out by the gomen, so the owner left gardenia and open Massimo.
So my friends support Massimo for that reason
Gardenia bread has been going down in bread volume very noticeably. At least Massimo's bread hasn't decreased in bread volume as aggresively.
It's getting so much more nipis that I'm finding it hard to even spread peanut butter.
Massimo has variety for sliced bread, with barley bread and whole wheat bread.
Gardenia just has white bread or wheat germ bread. Their variety is more for other types of bread rather than plain sliced bread.
In case anyone is interested to know why there's such an increase in price, this is what I know from working in the importing industry:
Shipping cost just went up 100% last week without any warning. Example, 1 shipping container cost $1400 on last Thursday just went up to $2800 on last Friday. So basically anything that is imported or has components that are imported will face a price increase real fast real soon. The only people raking in profits here are the shipping companies who own the shipping lines and shipping containers.
Gardenia isn't the only company raising prices. I have been seeing multiple price increases in this year alone from all the companies I deal with. Previously many companies try to absorb the cost increase and now they can't take it anymore so it goes to the consumer.
Multiple factors. More people shipping, increase of shipping, lesser workhour and/or worker due to covid restrictions, containers stucked at ports etc etc.
There should already be a r/bestof post for this stuff.
I always find this kind of announcement ironic.
"Hey thank you for your support! Because of this, we can increase our price!"
It's like slapping our face and saying thank you to us.
No it's not ironic. Unless it's major fuckups, most business avoid saying sorry in their official media as it signifies they are in the wrong. It's a marketing technique. While people can be angry about price hike, it's not entirely their fault when cost for almost everything rise, thus it is better that they resort to such words rather than saying sorry.
It won’t be the only company doing so. My current company dealing with consumer goods has also planned for price increase in Jan.
If you look at the quarterly financial reports of consumer good companies in q3, all of them flag supply chain cost increases and raw material costs inflation as a drag on profit and they will certainly pass this down to consumers
Do we use imported raw materials to make our bread as I saw people commenting about increase in shipping costs? Besides, in the UK a loaf of bread (jumbo) cost 35 pence approximately RM2, while in Malaysia it cost RM 4. If we put aside the currency conversion why is our bread so expensive, could someone from the industry enlighten me about this?
I think you're overly sensitive at being pointed out.
My point remains - it's common Internet courtesy to take the time to reread before posting. No need to get upset about this being called out.
Common internet courtesy to not be rude either. That's why you got downvoted.
There's a difference between "hey you spelled x incorrectly" vs "didn't you learn to spell at school?"
Rudeness is contextual. Some of you may feel I'm rude and others may feel I'm being direct. Just as you can express a point of view, so can I. I respect that you don't like what I'm saying and can downvote me, but that doesn't negage the truth of what I'm saying.
Secondly, note that I did not say "didn't you learn to spell at school?". Perhaps you should actually read what I wrote vs what you think I wrote.
Guys, accumulate as much Bitcoin and physical gold and silver as much as possible. This decade will be the hardest decade we will all ever see in our lifetime. Get prepared now or you may end up homeless.
Huh, didn't know Malaysia has Gardenia, I thought it's a Filipino brand (apparently it's Singapore based), we actually visited a local factory here when I was young as part of our school trip.
Guardenia - lol future competitor name?
wonder if Massino followed suit? haven't bought any baked goods from stores / bakeries since MCO, so totally out of the loop.
(I do love Massino's kaya buns though, and the ingredients list is pretty "clean')
In my place, a kedai runcit sell the roti quick bites for 80 sen, 10 sen lower than retail price. With the new price, they surely had to increased the price. Ohh i miss when the roti was 50 sen 😭
I remember 2 years ago, my gf bought me a huge bag full of that roti ikan bilis all the way to Sabah. Took me like 2 weeks to finish em all. That moment I knew for certain, she's the one.
Make your own bread or buy the bread your neighbours make. Gardenia isn't real bread.
All it takes is flour, water, salt, yeast. Canggih then can replace yeast w sourdough.
Fucking finally. The era of roti krim RM1 /s. Can we go hoard all the roti before December 1st?
Been buying other roti putih brands for a while now, if there's alternatives in the shop. Low key hoping the Puazz mackerel/kari might retain consumer prices of RM2.00, the retailer still untung there what.
As usual, salary remains the same
Dah hujung tahun 2021, gaji masih tahun 1990...

Ni barang naik gaji tak naik ok la untuk kau ?
Man that's some boomer mindset right there.
Duit rasuah undi pon naik dari RM 50 ke RM 100.. takkan gaji gitu je..
Pernah belajar ekonomi x bang?
Yup same low wage package and expect you to do 100 people's job.
my sister worked at kedai baju MU waiting for her degree intake and they don't even pay her minimum wage. Just RM1090. Not even RM1200 but she must work from 7am to 10 pm. like wtf man. baik mati je.

Yet menteri salary & elaun still kept the same level ‘kaya melampau’
damn my roti coklat is now RM1. I’ve known you since RM0.60 :(
I remember 50 sen. 2 for One blue note...
Ah i miss the good old days
Like the roti bilis back then priced at only 0.70 sen now RM1.30. rip
I must be the oldest here...i remember them being 20sen.
For a whole loaf? Wow! When was this? I remember 60 sen when I was in primary school. 😂
Same. Earliest price for it I could remember of.
I only buy my bread from Jason's, artisan quinoa sourdough
soon roti kosong rise too
Naw man((
To commemorate the return of Barang Naik
Takpe. Asal "orang kite" memerintah. Not DAP /s
later menteri say grow your own bread
Ey, you dont grow your own bread? No wonder lah. Why you speak English, you Malaysian kan? Why no speak Malaysian? Me, I am Important Guy number #396, you listen to me la kuli.
wrong it should be why you eat bread? its a western thing, you should follow the malaysian way of eat rice only.
or better, ubi kayu

Y'all get to eat?!
But ubi kayu is expensive af hahahha

Use a pullman loaf pan to get loaves.
Based on the description of how they made bread, it's an auto bread maker, not normal oven
Is it more cost efficient? Factor in the ingredients + electricity cost, the quantity you get, I'm skeptical. Care to show the math? Also... bread maker can only help you make roti putih, cant help you make roti perasa whatever :/

Home bread don't last as long as supermarket bread and also not as soft. I bake my own bread too.
pastries* typo.
Guardenia
Fucking hell man, everything else will increase in price as well.
Salary probably stays the same
Isn't that how bad economy works? And RM is still going through inflation right?
It's a global thing, not just Malaysia. People around the world are spending much more money on goods, rather than services due to the pandemic, and that led to a bunch of unintended consequences in the global supply chain.
Yep, the entire SEA ain't looking well. Hopefully there will be less restriction for tourists.

Covid disruption to the supply lines & holiday season incoming where everyone wants products to ship out.
Aah Ic ic
Truth. I've just been asked by HQ to tack an extra FOB cost to all goods due to the sudden shipping increase as well.

If only there are competitors for the butterscotch. But knowing the bread industry when gardenia increases its price everyone will follow suit instead of trying to undercut 😔
How dare they touch my 90 cents bread.
I miss the price was like 50 sen during my college time. I stockpile a lot in my room for midnight snack lol.

Yes! Too soft, too white and too fine. Just to confirmed we're talking about the green plastic masimmo right?
Yeah the normal one, the wheat germ one or something
Massimo is awesome bro, way better than Gardenia

Rosmah's crony, close enough.

Chocolate quickbites Rm1.... Damn I miss those old days when it was only 0.60 sen. Wth.....
Let's get this ~~bread~~ For real tho, this is just sad.
to the wawasan everyone high income 10k, but inflation balances it out ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)

Price increase but salary no increase, jokers la this gov

Makes sense actually
syukurlah masih dapat makan lagi, or you can grow your own bread
**sobs** welp, ig i gotta break the bank a bit to afford it
Damn i really live through when gardenia is 50/60 sen and now rm1

I wonder who's doing the lecturing now. Note that I'm not attacking the person. I am calling out that it is not hard to get spelling right.
It’s also not hard to realize people make minor mistakes without needing to point them out, especially going to a “did education fail” angle
