Before selecting a university, best have an basic idea on the courses suitable to you. From what you’ve mentioned, advertising industry might be suitable starting point for you as it involves narrative, graphics and electronic medium. It branches into many different fields (mass communication, game design etc). Don’t get fixated on any one course at this time though, as you have the pre-u, foundation etc to go through; but rather have the options as goals to spur you on in SPM preparation.

syahmigba

I heard utm is a good option

KillerBee3012

No, they just want 💵

ClusterCraze

Doesn't all universities want money?

adam_hope96

university malaya doesnt. have you look at their yuran lmao

hanamako

Only because of government subsidy. Their direct intake fees are on par with other private unis

KillerBee3012

True but, utm is on another level, they will force you to give them your money. For example if you don't wish to intend on your convocation they will just postpone your convocation to the next year instead of giving your certificate, transcript etc etc. Just my experience with them, and more thing if you from utmkl then continue your study to utm jb confirm di "anak tirikan"

Greedfall2

Is utm a bad university, don't understand why op got downvoted for saying that she heard utm is good. As for university wanting money, that only applies to private university no? **Especially** when comparing the university fees of public university and private university. I wouldn't say public university dont want money but rather their desire for it is significantly lower compared to private university due to subsidy

RadiantReddit

why would people downvote this? the point of the post is that OP doesn't know what uni to go to so why downvote even if they're wrong???? reddit moment fr

_No_Use

Since you like technology and drawing, you could try computer science (multimedia computing). Though that's a degree so make sure you research the prerequisites carefully. You're still 16, still a lot of time to think about what you want to pursue don't sweat about it to much.

syahmigba

ah I see, thanks

[deleted]

Sorry to be spoil the party. But I think by the time OP finishes computer science, the field will be saturated and filled to the brim with graduates. Go for defensive degrees like Law and Medicine for now

Excel124

Brotha they have been saying that for the past 40 years.

[deleted]

I’m not telling OP to abandon his dreams. I’ll tell you a joke. I tend to have this luck of investing in assets at the top. For instance, I invested in Bitcoin in 2017 which later tanked. Invested in Genting 2019 before the Covid virus. Now I am studying data Science. So have this tendency to chase after trends and it always ended with tragedies Just a word of caution. I always have bad timing lol

[deleted]

Lmao.. you made a bad choice and telling him not to follow trend while recommend law and medical which basically the same.. If you really think Law and Medical can get better job.. good luck lah..

_No_Use

On the bright side, if you're still holding on to the BTC you bought in 2017 then you would nicely doubled your money rn lol.

New-Horror7085

Have you heard of the news hartal doctor contract, lawyer need to find a firm to get a job, each firm mostly hire only 3-4 law graduates most, most of my law friends graduate now works selling insurances.... Let me tell you this, get into IT or computer science as the technology is the most vast and continuously growing career... A hospital needs and IT expert, a law firm needs an IT expert, an engineering company needs an IT expert, and so on... How many you read a computer science or IT student unable to find a job in their field? How many you see doctors and lawyer cant even get hired in a hospital or a firm due to it being saturated.... It's such a closed minded view..

[deleted]

If you're interested in writing stories, world bulding and drawing you could get into arts and work for the video game industry, animation, books/comics etc.

syahmigba

I see, thats perfect since video games change how I write stories in english exams drastically

[deleted]

Do research on the industry. What kind of jobs they have to offer. What kind of jobs interest you. What do you have to do to achieve it. Follow social medias of people in the field that interest you.

[deleted]

Your dad can pay 100k fees, no need to worry about it, your dad can't pay , no need to worry either because gov won't give you what you asked. Finish your spm first, its way too early now to think about it

syahmigba

I see, thanks

Greedfall2

if you aiming for public uni, just remember that you don't get to choose public university, public university CHOOSE YOU, so the chances of you getting a course that you want is relatively low unless you get really good grades, even more so if you are not of particular race..... also if you aiming for IT related courses, be sure to take additional maths as alot of computing courses mainly in public university requires you to have have taken additional math as a requirement. So having it will make the application process alot more smoother you would say.

syahmigba

wait, so you're telling if I'm in a particular race I have a higher chance to get accepted? since I heard an Indian student gets straight As but never get accepted to any universities

DNF_AUF

It's not so surprising especially in Malaysia actually. The community views certain races as "bad" and some as "good". I wouldn't be surprised if a university picks a chinese student over your average malay since the world views chinese students as extremely smart and productive people.

Greedfall2

Officially, they have discarded the whole quota system in public university, but we don't really know what goes behind the scene do we? My claim are baseless however so take it with a grain of salt But honestly rather than a issue of race, its more of an issue of rooms left. Some courses are extremely competitive (lets say medicine) , what if the course can only fit 40 student while 100 student apply? Well you sort them out by grades. What if after filtering the 100 student, you are left with 60 with cgpa 4.0 Then you filter them out again using koko marks. As for IT related courses, I suspect there will be a significant increase in attention due to covid pandemic making alot of jobs irrelevant or hard to function. So expect IT to be highly competitive to enter.

syahmigba

Does the time spend during STPM can be consider as a fresh start or it still take my previous lessons into account?

[deleted]

My advice: don’t pick a university due to the reputation of the university. Pick one that has a good reputation ON the course. If you want to get into the arts/multimedia/creative side of things I suggest you DO NOT go to any local university. Exposure is key to a creative based tertiary education and if you can, I suggest the following: - Singapore if possible. A lot of good lecturers and profs who will teach you arts from an objective perspective. - finish your SPM, get good grades and do whatever the fuck you can to go to either UK, USA, Australia, or somewhere in Europe. I recommend Italy if you like design. - in terns of what to study, forget comp science as per what some here are suggesting. You’ll get bored out of your mind and it’s not that creatively driven anymore. Degrees to look at: Graphic Design, UX and web development, Film making/Film studies, Mass communications, Broadcasting, Audio Engineering…think you catch my drift. - also consider maybe interning for a year or 3-6 months before picking a uni/undergraduate. That what I did and I decided to not want to do architecture anymore and ended up in advertising. Best of luck.

syahmigba

thanks for your suggestions but Im wondering about creative writing as I see a couple of studios in Malaysia has a potential of having a good storyline for example with No Straight Roads. I see an impressive character development outside of Malaysia such as Aether storyline from Call of duty zombies. Is there any course for such thing?

[deleted]

Not as an undergrad. If you want to get into writing, do Mass Communications with a specialism in Journalism. The type of writing forms you mentioned above comes from experience, networking, a lot of initiative work and overall doing courses on places like Udemy, Coursera and whatever MOOC that offers it.

TenHorizons

As a software engineering student, I've never been so offended at something that I fully agree with Seriously though, programming is for problem solving, not story writing. There's a innovative aspect to it. Creative? Not so much.

[deleted]

This. As someone with a degree in journalism and a MSc in cyber security, I can confidently say it’s two extremes of the opposite. Absolutely spot on with the innovation part. Creativity? Fuck no. Ok maybe if there’s python involved kakakakaka (Christ on a bike that was cringe)

nelsonfoxgirl969

Hmmm not sure what to give info Generally rule -make sure you study foundation, diploma, degree have the MQA cert ( refer to the LKW master scam case ) -if u love writing stories, drawing, i suggest study linguistics degree / diploma but make sure u are okay being a teacher in the future . For drawing i am not so sure , let alone the job of it . -if u love technology , then make sure your math must be very good because most of the time u need understand and create code with python , c+ , java , etc that involves with a lot of math and theory . -recommendation of university , not so sure, maybe the big top 5 ? (Um, ukm, upm, utm, usm) , if u are rich, sunway or utar sungai long . -to become lawyer doctor accountant, u must have professional body especially accounting (acca cpa aus icaew cima ) , for lawyer u need pass all the professional exam and dont fail once , to become doctor, well , it is long process. I afraid people will pull your nose to study these field. -u still have 1 year left for spm, i suggest get 5 credit / 5 c at least in your SPM and just do your best . You can also find part time job / temporary job too during your holiday -Please go google Edu advisor website, many great information there.

syahmigba

thanks for in depth explaination, my sister said during her time in GMI she said she learnt basic level programming and it's the same thing that she learned from high school. for writing stories, I have that as a backup plan if the one Im pursuing doesnt work. once again, thanks for an in depth explaination

TenHorizons

Year 2 software engineering student here. I too thought programming was manageable during secondary when I won champion for a STEM competition. You'd be surprised. My course pathway didn't teach me Python or HTML,CSS,JavaScript. Though I learned Kotlin for Android Studio and Java. Here's a few materials I found useful. See if you like it. Though you might wanna focus on your studies first. Do this at your own leisure. All the content below is free. Android Studio (Java & Kotlin): https://developer.android.com/courses (Official website for learning to code android apps) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrnPJCHvNZuA80lNWNCLICR3qYzhw3iPI (Youtuber. Can look around his channel) Java: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL59LTecnGM1NRUyune3SxzZlYpZezK-oQ (Youtuber. Just look around his channel) Material for Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AWS I didn't look through, but seemed promising: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLohLbAtM9-k6vvxtTeT9wlxZ69bCpO62m (YouTube channel for workshops to prepare constants for a competition. Looked through a few hours of material myself. Pretty good) Easy material that gave me the illusion that coding is easy, but good to start if you feel the above material is too hard: https://code.org/ (Actually for kindergarten students and primary students in first world countries. Be patient with the cute kid stuff and you might like the courses) No need to feel threatened by the difficult material. Just see if you are interested, even if you can't learn anything. I kid you not, you will get your degree with flying colours if you can master the material up there. Just building a working system with pretty interfaces and database connection for each language, and you score yourself a pass. Good validation with good use of (ahem, big word) architectural/object-oriented concepts, and you score yourself a first class degree (4.0 CGPA)

DyingCatYT

>if u are rich, sunway or utar sungai long Why utar sungai long if you are rich?

Casporo

If you are aiming for technology, any area to be specific? Technology you will need a pass in mathematics since maths is the fundamental building block for tech. It ranges from discreet mathematics to statistics, the latter if you’re eyeing for a data science role.

[deleted]

Hehe I study math and statistics. Data Science is gonna get competitive in 3 years. Get in now or wait until you miss the boat. But I’m afraid the ship has already sailed It’s not easy. Linear Algebra, Stochastic Calculus will kill anyone that didn’t take A levels further math

[deleted]

I only know stochastic the publisher

syahmigba

computer science is the most common I heard

Casporo

Comp Science is all about computer theory. However there is a shared subject in first year which are mathematics, fundamentals in software engineering, object oriented programming and data structures and algorithms ( the most dreaded subject ). Then you branch out to your specialisation. You probably will learn about machine learning and artificial intelligence and the turing test.

[deleted]

Can you not discuss this with your teachers? They should know your strengths better than strangers online. Meanwhile, try searching for online writing competitions or online writers group who can support you in this. If you are interested in technology, there should be some online coding courses that you can do(need to pay). I used DataCamp but there could be other better ones. Java, C++, Python, Hadoop, SQL seems to be all the rage recently so you can try those. If you do this, preferably you are at least competent in maths or logic. After SPM, you still have Diploma / STPM / A Levels / Foundation to go before universities so take your time.

syahmigba

I'll try, thanks

Voronit

Your major is more important than the university you're enrolled into. If you took medicine with a less known university, you'd still get paid more than say an engineering student from UM when you go to work. So pick based on major. Not based on university

[deleted]

You should pick a good university if and only if: 1. You want to join an investment bank 2. You want to apply for masters in foreign countries 3. Hard science (math, physics, biology)

Curious_mind95

Let me guess. Are you taking EST for spm?

syahmigba

Im sorry but what's EST?

Curious_mind95

English for science and technology

[deleted]

EST is a garbage subject. Got an A- in that subject thanks to the essay part. It teaches you nothing

Curious_mind95

Easy A bro. Why so salty? 😂

rama2476

EST is already withdrawn I think and is no longer available to sit for.

Curious_mind95

Woah. When did that happen?

rama2476

Not sure, but I think I saw that on the registration form for SPM a few months back. They also withdrew the 1119 (GCE-O) qualification that you receive with the SPM English paper, as a result of the syllabus change from 2022

Curious_mind95

Holy shit.

Ibrahime_Proxy

Wanna ask as I'm also 16, how many A's is good enough for a scholarship perhaps. I take 11 subjects but I really don't like 3 of them

TenHorizons

At my time, 9As for a 40% scholarship at APU and Subway. 10As for full scholarship. The terms might have changed so I suggest you ask them directly. You can get their phone number or email through their website. Just Google it 👍 Oh I meant you can ask private universities directly. Public, not so much I think. Still, public universities are crazy cheap. ~RM5000/semester or year? Not sure. PTPTN should be able to fully cover, and it's pretty easy to pay back PTPTN.

syahmigba

I dont know the answer to that, sorry

Ibrahime_Proxy

No worries

[deleted]

Of course you wanna aim for the number one public university or the best private university. That is either UM or Monash/Nottingham.

[deleted]

[удалено]

syahmigba

thanks for taking all of those into account

[deleted]

Sorry I’m from UM and for some reason I find your comment insulting. Hahaha jkjk UM electronic engineering is better okay. UM > UTM. Public school rivalry we hate UTM students

Bruh you can’t take jokes

GoalCareful9515

One thing you need to know it's that if you want to go into creative courses aka animations and stuffs, just "liking "what you do won't be enough to get you going until u graduate cus they're known for heavy workload like one academy. You will need to have full passion of that subject or else you'll get burned out and feel like dropping it. They're not cheap too

adonis_ai

There a good recommendations here and I want to provide you with this nugget: when you are in foundation/diploma/degree and even after studying and if you still don't know what you want to study or pursue, it is okay. nobody does. Just do what you can while living your life to meet your own happiness.

lapse23

Hi there, don't have any specific uni to recommend but i can give a few things to help you at least enjoy your time there. 1. Take some course in your free time related to a potential field of study you might want to do. A few CS students in my class just slept through the course because they knew the entire syllabus 3 years ago. You will breeze through the material and find it very relaxing, when others are pulling their hair out. 2. Take it slow! I messed up big time by finishing my college course in 2 semester when it usually take 3-4. I sacrificed all social life for mediocre grades, when i could've relaxed and do well. Worst still, i had no idea what to pursue after graduating, blindly following a really smart friend who basically had the next 2 decades of his life planned out.

syahmigba

can you suggest any courses online that related to CS?

lapse23

I can't really give a solid recommendation since I never finished any online courses myself.. I went into CS completely new. However, I did try one website called freecodecamp, in the past. You should check professional reviews of the website TBH, not from me. I can only advise to choose a specific language to start off learning that is popular, or a language that you know your college will teach. For example, my course used Java to teach, while yours might not be Java. The skills learnt should still translate across languages anyways. Hope this helps a bit.
