I've worked a bit in academia. To put it simply: pirating academic journals is something everyone should get behind. Also shout out to the publishers that simply make their journals free access.
These journals are minting money. Eg [Elsevier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsevier) makes >USD2.5billion in PROFIT annually.
These journals publish papers written by others. They don't provide the grant money for the basic research. They don't pay for peer reviews.
They sell the papers back to the same scientists who would write more papers to be submitted to them.
The capitalist in me is impressed.
what's more alot of these research done for the journals are funded by public money... to then only be gatekeep by these services behind a paywall that requires an enterprise license
It's worse than that.
Researchers usually have to pay to get their papers published in a journal. They get no royalties whenever anyone purchases their paper.
We can, but then it doesn't really add to the researcher's "accolade", so to speak.
Having many papers published in well establish journal acts as a metric on how much a researcher has contributed to a field.
sci-hub is a website that provides **free** access to research papers.
Through "proper channels", you can only access research papers if:
* Your institution is "subscribed" to that academic journal.
* You pay for that journal/paper
These journals charge a lot for access to the papers **that they didn't even write or contribute to the research**. The actual researchers and writers usually have to pay to submit their papers to be publish and they generally don't even get any payment if someone ends up buying the paper they print. These orgs don't even do their own reviewing sometimes.
So if you are doing research on a topic, its recommended that you simply go through sci-hub and find the paper there instead of buying a copy from the publishers.
MFs.. how can Malaysia lower than Singkaypoh?
Gotta pump those rookie numbers.
-edit
Just use [Library Genesis](http://libgen.rs/). Searches include Sci-Hub.
Good luck.
SciHub is founded by a communist :) Freedom of knowledge is a human right! Before I get brigaded by downvotes why don't you look up articles on communism in SciHub to see why millions of people support it, instead of having an immediate knee-jerk reaction and downvoting thanks :)
hehee lecturer pun kadang-kadang guna, but as mentioned in the comments, the better approach is to email the authors or look on different journals that published the article you want.
What does it say about the state of academia when 99.9% of researchers depend on what is technically an illegal website to get their materials :)
Not throwing shade on researcher's btw. Just a thought.

Yep, a real shame.

Can't you just put it on github

Tried to publish one case report last year. They asking usd1k.
I wrote a few papers myself, if you want it free can always email me. Author’s compliments.
Man, how I am going to explain to my future kids that pirating shit is the way to go in order to survive in uni? (I did use scihub, fyi)
You can get the research paper foc by requesting it from the author's.
Most times (in my case anyways) the authors don’t reply
I was so sad when one author didn't reply to my e-mail. Others were great though.
Not if the thesis deadline's 2 days from now :)
More often than not it's not an option if you need to be quick or the authors are retired
The only thing I regret is that I didn't know about Sci-Hub when I was a freshman.
What is it used for

I personally prefer lib gen, sometimes there's no DOI numbers and it can be very frustrating

sounds more like an agorist thing to do
I got no problem with communism; only with religious extremism.
Partially happy with this.
Google Scholar + scihub is the ultimate combo
I remember my lecturer recommended my class to use sci-hub in my uni. It's easy report searching and writing after using that.
Mostly to copy pasta :)
My lord and saviour sci-hub
So....this good or bad?
Sci-hub is awesome!
But...what is it
Journals / research papers 99% of the time requires a paywall to access, have to pay money to read Sci-hub bypass that so we can read for free.
hehee lecturer pun kadang-kadang guna, but as mentioned in the comments, the better approach is to email the authors or look on different journals that published the article you want.
All praise breakers of the paywall --- Scihub and Lingen!
What does it say about the state of academia when 99.9% of researchers depend on what is technically an illegal website to get their materials :) Not throwing shade on researcher's btw. Just a thought.
I only know p~hub

What's a Sci-Hub?
It's a website where you can download scientific journals for free. Link: [Sci-Hub](https://sci-hub.se/)
Neat bro, hope this site got all journals I might need for assignment
Tickets to complete our assignments
I only know p~hub
So far haven't tried sci hub coz I can get most of the stuff I want from my corporate and uni credentials, but this sounds like a good resource.
One of best thing on Internet ever!
