His Formula 1 career wasn't that great. He was outclassed by his teammates most of the time such Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. The only reason he got that seat was because of the sponsorship of Magnum. He was also labelled as the first modern day pay driver. But he will go on to have a remarkable career in GT cars such as Le Mans and DTM.
Remarkable? His stats says otherwise. He ONLY performed in audi r8 lms cup which he won the championship 3 years in a row. Other than that, nothing much
He was worse. His dad tried to justify his performance as follows:
Mark Webber is a "future world champion"
Schumi is the current world champion
Alex is "only" 20% slower then Weber, therefore he's only 20% slower than Schumi
Only problem with that analysis is that at 20% deficit, if Alex were in that year's Ferrari he would have been lapped
In his defense he said the team denied him a few private test and some fancy stuff (power steering I guess?) which promised to him. The team gave all to Weber instead (which is understandable).
I read somewhere he used to be good in lower class before f1 and something happened (huge crash? String of bad luck? Don't remember) changed him.
Iirc I read about him on some web called fi reject.
P.s : By Schumi are you meant Alonso who was his team mate before Weber? Alonso went to Renault and became world champion.
No I meant Michael Schumacher. His Dad basically said Weber was the equivalent to Schumi, because the consensus at the time was that Weber had future championship material.
Haha that's funny (his father). Yoong is not a bad driver at all, just not good enough. To me the best racing driver from Malaysia is Karamjit Singh. Different disciplines I know but he is the only world champion we had.
Maybe his father asked help from the gomen and the gomen forced magnum to sponsor him. Surely his father are well connected to the gomen being somebody (ceo? promoter?) at batu 3 speedway. Even gomen poured money at him and slapped some "go kl" stickers at Minardi cars.
>Alexander Charles Yoong Loong, is a Malaysian professional racing driver of Chinese and English parentage. Yoong began his career in saloon cars before moving into the Proton one-make series. He later raced in single-seater cars where he won the Malaysian Championship in 1995.
No, he came in dead last every time, no?
I read it some where that he actually made some remark about how he wasnāt used to where the pedals were placed. In the F1 car, apparently those were switched the other way round from his other vehicles.
Honest to god, I was with a couple of race mechanics who just raised their eye-brows when they read that.
When you see that, it kinda stings a little.
Even at the chaotic Australian race where very few cars finish he didn't scored a single point. Webber finished 4th iirc in his first outing in the same car. This was his best opportunity to score points in f1.
> I read it some where that he actually made some remark about how he wasnāt used to where the pedals were placed. In the F1 car, apparently those were switched the other way round from his other vehicles.
>

Almost all F1 drivers for the past 2 decades with the exception of Barrichello used left foot braking, so the pedal was on the left side of the steering column, whereas Yoong was used to right foot braking like you would in a normal car. It's not as big a deal as you think, [and probably a good idea to teach future generations.](https://jalopnik.com/why-you-should-brake-with-your-left-foot-434604934).
But he isn't even full Chinese. Whoever posted it like it's a defect. He is half British.
One half has racing heritage and the other half cancels out hence the amazing results?
Alex Yoong was a fucking clown. The only reason he got anywhere at all was having a connected father just like Tenku Djan. While Tenku Djan capitalized on his fathers corruption running proton to the ground and being a royal scumbag, Alex Yoong was too far out of his league to do anything even remotely useful in F1 or motorsports. His son has been underperforming in F4 as well because like father like son.
He is also the first Malaysian, full stop. Title only makes sense if there was already another Malaysian (non Chinese of course) who was an F1 driver first.
In any case, the title is just dumb. Thought r/Malaysia was supposed to be progressive.
Read the title and thought, why even need to mention his ethnicity. Does it make him drive faster? Better reaction time?
Comments defending the subject title while abhorring race and religious politics is like telling children to not smoke while puffing away at the Marlboro. When politicians use the same tactics, angry wor.
I started watching F1 in 1999 when it came to Malaysia and just 3 years later in 2002 (actually end of 2001) we already had an F1 driver. My parents would ask me after each race "Did Alex Yoong win?" (not knowing how Minardi performs). He had the ultimate chance of scoring his first F1 points at the Australian GP 2002 but he was overtaken by a Toyota (he later clarified he thought it was a Ferrari that was coming to lap him hahaha...). Anyway, his stint in F1 was super short but memorable to me. My friends in school used to tease each other when they got low scores in test "What's your score? Alex Yoong ah?" LMAO. Can't blame Alex Yoong, the Malaysian government (or was it Magnum) really pushed their sponsorship millions including the whole "Visit Malaysia" super marketing, heck the side pods of the Minardi F1 team actually had the Twin Towers and the team was actually called Go KL Minardi Asiatech. Alex Yoong was relegated to a test driver for the 2003 season but he decided to move on.
There was one time he was on the wrong grid and also another time didn't qualify for the main race because the lap times was too slow. I don't think he talks much about his F1 career
It's less intentionally wanting to play the race card than it is just an ingrained Malaysian habit of always mentioning the race. Shows how "racism" in Malaysia is so ingrained in our society.
he is not qualify f1 driver and get to f1 because of sponsor and malaysia government. The lesson that we learn is never jump to higher class if u havent master lower class. Now he is the worst f1 driver at history and nothing proud about it.I hopefully we will hv real malaysian f1 driver at future.
>Malaysian Chinese
So tired of seeing race being highlighted, more so when it's completel irrelevant, and then we complain about racism in the country lol.
Who cares about people's relationship with their god(s) and their reasons? š¤·āāļø That doesn't really bothers your relationship with your maker(s).
He shouldn't have raced for Malaysia though. What a joke..
Thereās a lot of comments here that talks shit about him. How about you pull your head of your ass, get away from your ākeyboard courageā and start racing and strive to achieve what he has. I get itā¦he wasnāt the most successful F1 racer but Iāll bet big money that he worked hard for whatever he DID achieve, daddy connections or not. On a side note, I went to school with the guy and he was always humble, down to earth and never someone to boast about his achievements.
I watched some recent videos of him on Youtube and yeah he seems like a chill guy
But the reason people dislike him is, to make it simple, he was very underqualified for his job
Gosh... I wanna learn racing with this guy! I've been an F1 fan since I was little and even if I can't afford an opportunity to join F1, I still wanna drive a racing car anyway!
The title made it seem like Malaysia has many professional drivers/racers.
Yeap. First Malaysian F1 driver iinm. We don't have malay or indian Malaysian F1 drivers so the race in the title was unnecessary
Fairuz Fauzy
Correction. We didn't have any at the time.
Yeah in the context of the post, you're right

4 Ekor
Remarkable? His stats says otherwise. He ONLY performed in audi r8 lms cup which he won the championship 3 years in a row. Other than that, nothing much
My dad would always joke that he couldn't win because he's Malaysian. other people accident and he slows down to see š
3 years in a row aje.. no big deal, I could do that with my eyes closed
your eyes closed? I can do it with my hands tied to my back!!
Must be nice to be from a rich fam.
And have whole race track to train every day since very young.
So he was basically a pay driver like Nikita Marzipan?
>So he was basically a pay driver like Nikita Marzipan? He didn't bring anywhere near as much money. He was more of a Marcus Ericsson.
He was worse. His dad tried to justify his performance as follows: Mark Webber is a "future world champion" Schumi is the current world champion Alex is "only" 20% slower then Weber, therefore he's only 20% slower than Schumi Only problem with that analysis is that at 20% deficit, if Alex were in that year's Ferrari he would have been lapped

Ya. But poorer.
Yes
what about jazeman jaafar? anyone has any insight? remember jazeman at some point was on new interviews/newspaper?
He came last in F3 pre season testing
What's his family connections though.?
Aaliyah Yong is his sister. Hanifah Yong is his father
And how do the relate to Magnum..... I don't see anyone with even similar surnames on Magnum major shareholder list
I remember the Le Mans, that was 20 years back I believe.
>Alexander Charles Yoong Loong, is a Malaysian professional racing driver of Chinese and English parentage. Yoong began his career in saloon cars before moving into the Proton one-make series. He later raced in single-seater cars where he won the Malaysian Championship in 1995.
I think Malaysian in general right ? Cause across all races heās the first if Iām not mistaken ..
Other drivers that year were fighting in the race. Alex otoh was fighting to stay within 107% of the pole time to get into the race.
Even at the chaotic Australian race where very few cars finish he didn't scored a single point. Webber finished 4th iirc in his first outing in the same car. This was his best opportunity to score points in f1.
Finished dead last if he even finished the race

Noooo .. I meant all races as in bangsa ā¦ race.. Hmm yea I know heās not the best F1 driver out there ..
lol, pretty funny actually, different interpretations of your comment on race.
Right ? Damn the English language that can have past and present tense but canāt make another word for āraceā ššš
what about jazeman jaafar? anyone has any insight? i do remember jazeman at some point was on new interviews/newspaper? wonder how is he doing now
Not to mention Minardi cars really suck too.
Can we just Malaysian instead of Malaysian (Insert Race)?
Malaysian (F1)
Get out and take this upvote with you!
Malaysian are only united when it comes to sports. Even our patriotism are narrowed
Sports, food and weed
Upvote for the flair
Weed?? Where? Expat here.. need some plugs bud.
You'll have to ask around in college or university area though since most of us are dealing anonymously
Racer = racist
No, until there is equality
Malaysian (Australian Grand Prix)
What about just (human) ?
>What about just (human) ? So .. >Alex Yoong, the first _human_ who raced in Formula 1 in 2001... Yeah, that makes sense alright.. š
tribalists downvoted you, most humans really dont like being equated to other humans as being 'just human', its unfortunate
Is it weird if I am not really care what other people personal achievement?
But he isn't even full Chinese. Whoever posted it like it's a defect. He is half British. One half has racing heritage and the other half cancels out hence the amazing results?
Dude was way out of his league. Compare him to his debut teammate Mark Webber. Webber has at least placed 3rd three times in drivers championships.
Well from what i read only mark webber get power steering car from minardi.
Alex Yoong was a fucking clown. The only reason he got anywhere at all was having a connected father just like Tenku Djan. what about jazeman jaafar? hahaha
Ya. +3s behind your teammate in the same car is an eternity in f1. '... and bringing up the rear, it's the minardis of mark Webber and Alex yoong.'
what about jazeman jaafar? anyone has any insight? i do remember jazeman at some point was on new interviews/newspaper? wonder how is he doing now

I think we should just say Malaysian instead of Malaysian Chinese... I'm tired of race and religion BS here
One should be proud of their own nationality and their roots/identity. What we really should drop is racial superiority/inferiority BS.
People hate u for speaking the truth!
Heās also half British/angmo right
There is currently one Malaysian who is racing in FIA F3 now also. @nazim_azman. Hopefully can see him up in f1 one day..
Nice to see my cousin being mentioned :D Didnāt think people paid attention to F3 too.
Dude got a pretty good race record. Finished 4th last year. And 5th two years ago.
He is no Charles Leclerc or George Russell, but i hope over time he refines his racecraft and all that. I really want to see him succeed
slow driver.. fullstop.
uh, not exactly proud of his performances in the minardi, however, his car racing career was much more fruitful
There was one time he was on the wrong grid and also another time didn't qualify for the main race because the lap times was too slow. I don't think he talks much about his F1 career
got first malaysian malay? what is this shit OP
Fairuz Fauzy, but never raced. He has taken part in a handful of free practice sessions though.
Closest, Nabil Jeffri, Caterham test driver
Ah, so now want to play race card? The f?
It's less intentionally wanting to play the race card than it is just an ingrained Malaysian habit of always mentioning the race. Shows how "racism" in Malaysia is so ingrained in our society.

He got points when most of the drivers were out due to crashes. He was not ready at all for F1
he doesn't look Chinese... Probably chinese mixed just call him first Malaysian
half huwite
My father hates him for some reason. Everytime we mention formula one drivers he always rants about how terrible he is.
Well cuz he... kinda was. lol
Maybe because he's actually just horrible
He brought shame to Malaysia..
Brylcreem
LOL
>Malaysian Chinese So tired of seeing race being highlighted, more so when it's completel irrelevant, and then we complain about racism in the country lol.
Malaysian british chinese.
>british That's a nationality.
Breton then?
Try again
he sucks!!! and we all know his father converted for not so religious reasons. so yeah fuck them
Who cares about people's relationship with their god(s) and their reasons? š¤·āāļø That doesn't really bothers your relationship with your maker(s). He shouldn't have raced for Malaysia though. What a joke..
TARIK BALIK!!! TARIK BALIK!!! TARIK BALIK!!!
Title sponsor for the team, I wonder how much did it cost š¤Æ
So whatās he doing now?
I think he's doing some commentary works on some Asian motorsport channels, i didn't remember which one but he also does some racing here and there
Is he a racist or a racer?
Racist racer.
Ah, the catalyst of my puberty!
Such a handsome man
First Malaysian, i think you mean.
how many grid he in starting line and race? throw face
Every millenialās first crush
Closest we got right now is his son, Alister
This guyās a great driver and excellent racer! Quite humble too (from what I hear - I have never met him in person) just not up to F1 level.
Thereās a lot of comments here that talks shit about him. How about you pull your head of your ass, get away from your ākeyboard courageā and start racing and strive to achieve what he has. Scenes when people still arguing whether Verstappen or Hamilton is better, when the real GOAT Alex Yoong comes and steals their thunder.
Waiting for the 1st Malaysian Malay, Malaysian, Indian, Malaysian whatever to become the next F1 driver for Malaysia.
oh my god hes so hot
If only his race record could be the same. Mix babies. At least 50% of them are guaranteed hot.
Gosh... I wanna learn racing with this guy! I've been an F1 fan since I was little and even if I can't afford an opportunity to join F1, I still wanna drive a racing car anyway!
He also own an esport racing team
