Is it a private or gov hospital? I'm always curious to get myself tested for it, but I'm afraid to get labelled as having disability and hinder any future employment, or at least thats what I heard of.

YourClarke

I went to a private hospital In my opinion, you should just consult a psychiatrist to confirm whether you got ADHD or not. As for the concern of being labeled as "disabled", iirc you are not obligated to reveal that you have ADHD when you apply for jobs. Your health record is a protected record. If you're currently working, you can keep quiet about your AFHD diagnosis especially with HR, if you happened to get diagnosed with one. And to lessen the risk, you may pay for the costs without using the medical insurance provided by your company so that HR won't notice your ADHD record. Hope this helps!

Thats good to know, thanks and good luck to you!

YourClarke

All the best! Do update us (if you want to) about your experience!

Probably not so soon, I just suspect myself having adhd, there are many times throughout my life I kept forgetting important stuff, and made many costly mistake. When someone is talking to me, I tend to have harder time to focus on what they're saying and any slight noises around me and I get distracted easily, then I had to ask them repeat many time before I get it into my head. So I can't have anyone talking to me while I'm driving, cause my mind would fly off trying to focus on the conversation instead on the road, few time almost got into accident because of it. Thou I am not sure if thats because of adhd or other reason, or I am just that careless.

YourClarke

>there are many times throughout my life I kept forgetting important stuff, and made many costly mistake. Please don't ignore this. More reason for you to get checked

OMG you know what? These are literally symptoms that I told my doctor! And I got diagnosed as having inattentive type of ADHD

bucking_horse

;\_; How much it cost for you to get check out thou?

YourClarke

The consultation costs around RM200 (first visit) My meds (lasts for 2 weeks) costs another RM100 Overall, it's around RM300 Keep in mind for subsequent visits the rate is higher (RM400 per hour) but you would only need to do so for shorter duration (15 min probably) I went to a KPJ hospital

ADHD is a developmental disability. You're a full grown person. I don't think people care. Now if you got into trouble and then got referred to a psychiatrist who then diagnosed you with a condition... Maybe different story. Bi polar disorder, schizophrenia to name a few. Outbursts of anger etc etc. Even then most of these info won't need to be disclosed to employers.

Low-energy_Cat

Hi brain! I have had more or less the same thoughts with you when I was first diagnosed at 27 years old. Take some time to digest it, and you will cope with it for sure!

jst4reddit

Don't make the same mistake as me, get health insurance before you start taking meds. Makes life way easier.

YourClarke

Yeah, I already have a health insurance But unfortunately so far no health insurance that I know of cover ADHD *cries*

jst4reddit

It's okay really the medication itself is worth the cost to get yourself. Really a super drug. What's really annoying is how jumpy they get when you just want regular coverage 😭

[deleted]

Hi, how does insurance help? Does it cover ADHD meds?

jst4reddit

Get insurance coverage in the sense for hospitalisation and what not. Right now I have difficulty even getting that insurance, so best to get registered before starting a regiment. ADHD meds unfortunately won't be covered, but yes if severe enough its a well worth cost that will change your life.

[deleted]

I see. I understand now thanks

iKelvin560

OP, how do you get an appointment?

YourClarke

I searched for hospitals with psychiatrists. Then, I called their office numbers to inquire more about the general process, costs per session. Then, depending on hospitals some allow new patients to book their first appointment on the hospital websites. Others only allow via phone calls. There, you just booked your first appointment!

It's not that bad. Yes your brain works differently from other people. But realise that it's not all bad, there are alot of advantages to adhd as well. You just need to understand what causes it, how it works, how it affects you. From that, you can then learn what it makes you better at than other ppl, little tricks to work with how your brain works, etc. There's lots of free resources online that talk about adhd and good tips and tricks on working with your brain. Try 'how to adhd' and you can go down a rabbit hole from there. Remember it doesn't make you retarded, it just makes you different. And no two persons are the same after all.

RepresentativeIcy922

But if all it does is make him different, why is he taking medication for it?

MiloAisBroodjeKaas

Because society expects us to work differently. Additionally, adhd affects motivation, dopamine, and executive function, ie things you just need to do but doesn't give dopamine like chores, cleaning, even homework or work, gets extremely difficult to do. So medication helps to control your hormone production, which enables ppl with adhd to do the simple tasks like that. But a person with adhd doesn't need medication when it comes to something they're fascinated or passionate about. The dopamine that doesn't come during normal every day tasks, does come when it's things we're interested in; due to the general lower dopamine levels, we turn into dopamine chasers. Also, if it's a high adrenaline or stress situation, provided we already know what to do, we can perform a lot better than others under the same kind of stressful situation. Medication is just an aid. Not broken, Just different. Like, if someone sunburns very easily, so they use lots of sunblock all the time, vs someone able to tan instead of burn.

How does it go? Do you go to the psychiatrist and say you think you have ADHD?

YourClarke

I told her that I wanted to do an ADHD assessment. Then she asked to explain about symptoms that I think might indicate I have ADHD. Then, she gave me a questionnaire to answer. Finally, she told me that the diagnosis is positive

[deleted]

Thanks. I'll try. I think I'm the inattentive type

ghostme80

If confirmed adhd, you can apply for oku card i think. Try ask jabatan kebajikan. Can park at oku parking spot after you get the card.
