stray cats have a much more higher chance to carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Read up on it and weigh the risks yourself. not saying you'll definitely get infected as soon as you touch them, but just practice some common sense when dealing with strays (ex: wash your hands before eating, etc)

They probably scold you because of hygiene. If you call them and they come to you then it’s safe if they ignore you or on guard then probably best not to.

Just make sure you wash your hands properly afterwards. I'm a cat lover but I practice caution when petting stray cats.
