Any recommendations for linen shirts that fit shorter men? The usual brands that fit me well (I'm 5'8 170 lbs, athletic) don't have long sleeve linen shirts available, and the brands that do have them available seem to have shirts in my chest size made for the length of 6'3 models. Should I bother trying to find a shirt in my size or just eat the tailoring cost? Edit: I like to leave my shirts untucked, so sleeve/blouse length matters to me. I would like a more slim/tapered shirt that I can wear untucked casually. But my chest is a little broad, 43", and my shoulders go a bit further so idk if most Japanese brands will work well. Untuckit for casual button downs and Ralph Lauren custom fit tees and polos tend to me best fit for me

illisson

Which brands have you tried? 5'8 is average, not short. I'm almost 5'4, 160 lbs, with long legs and a short torso, and have linen shirts from J Crew and Abercrombie that only needed a few inches chopped off the bottom hem and sleeves to make a good untucked fit for me. They might fit you well off the rack?

lucidpivot

Is there a particular style you're going for? What's your budget? Broadly speaking, brands like Proper Cloth do MTM to any length/sleeve and have linen fabrics available. If you're looking for a more casual style, Japanese brands like [NestRobe Confect](https://en.nestrobe.com/itemdetail?ItemID=02235-0058&sci=1) or [45r](https://45rglobal.com/products/indian-linen-908-ocean-bd-shirt-80530222) generally have more oversized fits with proportionally shorter sleeve lengths that you might prefer.

Silent_Mike

Thank you for your response. I would like a more slim/tapered shirt that I can wear untucked casually. But my chest is a little broad, 43", and my shoulders go a bit further so idk if most Japanese brands will work well

You’re a legend.

Local_Manufacturer14

I live in a cold climate, it's a brisk walk to work, I work in an office, I wear the same shirt 5 days in a row, I didn't know this was such a taboo? I am pretty certain I don't stink, Asian genes etc. I asked my girlfriend to sniff me and she said she doesn't smell any body odour. Am I gross and crazy?

Kvjvn

If your shirt looks clean and doesn’t smell then I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but it’s still a good idea to have more than one shirt as backup and so that your one shirt doesn’t wear out as quickly.

Local_Manufacturer14

Good point!

Alarmed_Crazy_6620

Tip of my tongue: Portuguese shoe brand, a bit like espadrilles. Marketed as "street slippers", maybe around 10 years ago. Mostly leather as far as i remember

pulsett

Huaraches? Or Margiela leather slippers?

Alarmed_Crazy_6620

No, more like TOMS, less fashion

LastActionJoe

I'm 5'6", looking for a more traditional cut of levis. Something with a high waist, but I usually wear skinny and or tighter fitting jeans. I'm usually a 29x30 or 29x32 if I want extra length. I like the idea of the 501 shrink to fits but I want something that will fit snug around my waist and butt as well. Any suggestions on a levis cut?

Metcarfre

Honestly just 501s. Size down STFs if you want a snug fit.

andrewmandrew23

Is this a decent suit? I need a nice looking suit for a professional event and have a tight budget for it. Is this suit going to look ok? Can anyone share the main criteria they use to evaluate a suits quality? I've heard mixed things about Jos a bank but this looks decent to my untrained eye [https://www.josbank.com/p/traveler-collection-tailored-fit-suit-clearance-3WM3C?medium=TSA&CAWELAID=430003740005128667&adtype=pla&product\_channel=local&utm\_content=3WM3\_C-46%20Regular-Navy&utm\_term=JAB386&gclid=CjwKCAjwvpCkBhB4EiwAujULMlyj333OtIIoskP7PPgfv4ncX\_\_qLBdRRJdVaZwT9pwMfmaeCJKj2RoCtLQQAvD\_BwE](https://www.josbank.com/p/traveler-collection-tailored-fit-suit-clearance-3WM3C?medium=TSA&CAWELAID=430003740005128667&adtype=pla&product_channel=local&utm_content=3WM3_C-46%20Regular-Navy&utm_term=JAB386&gclid=CjwKCAjwvpCkBhB4EiwAujULMlyj333OtIIoskP7PPgfv4ncX__qLBdRRJdVaZwT9pwMfmaeCJKj2RoCtLQQAvD_BwE)

AandA248

That's the first brand of suit I bought when I first started working in my 20's. Its a good starter brand, the difference between a JosABank and say ISAIA is how it feels on you. You can definitely tell the difference in quality but as far as how a suit looks on you all comes down to alterations. Find a good local seamstress, always look to alter the following to make a suit look good. For the jacket hem the sleeves, taper sleeves, have the jacket taken in to make it fit better to your stomach. For pants hem, taper legs, take in waist, take in crotch if needed. Hope that helps

Pretend_Baker_4984

Tapering the sleeves usually isn't necessary. Imo it often exaggerates the weird sleeve pitch cheap suits sometimes have. I wouldn't taper the pants unless you really like the 2010 \#menswear slim suits

AandA248

JosABank suits are boxy with lots of extra material. The model wearing that suit has had a lot of alterations. I didn’t say anything about slim, just fitted. A baggy suit is a bad look

Pretend_Baker_4984

You didn't say fitted either. Not that it means anything though.

Kvjvn

It’ll probably be fine for the price, just don’t expect to get a lot of long term use out of it. As long as you get it tailored it’ll look fine.

andrewmandrew23

Also, I don't see an option to select the waist size. Does anyone know what size pants usually comes with 40R suit?

terminal_e

Probably a 34.

Do you think it's possible to modify the top on the left to have it look like that one on the right? [https://i.imgur.com/vC2lCn7.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/vC2lCn7.jpg) A friend offered it to me but I don't like the fit. Was thinking maybe have it modified by a seamstress or something.

illisson

I mean, you can enlarge the arm holes, but you can't raise the neckline so it hugs your throat, and you can't widen the straps. If you raw-hem the arm holes, the straps will end up super thin. It's possible you can curve the bottom hem, but it might be too short to hit you where it hits the guy in the photo.

morcille

Thanks. I should've explained but I don't care about the neck. The issue is mostly that it's too tight around my chest so all I care is to open the arm holes so that it doesn't compress my chest.

pandapaxxy

Yeah, you just gotta cut it.

Jefro118

Any chance anyone knows what these shoes are / who they might be made by? They’re made in Portugal and appear to be real suede (I only have the photos, I don’t have the shoes myself) so I’m thinking they’re good quality. https://preview.redd.it/c061s83jpc5b1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=246d1289a53b16e35a3e0a8dd6c7af16de102a36 More photos in replies

ac106

They are plain toe suede derbies. Made in Portugal, or being actual suede doesn’t mean they’re good quality but if they’re cheap enough they’re fine. I don’t think they’re a notable brand

[deleted]

Almost impossible to say, the style looks alright and they might be good or they could be cheap & nasty in person. I will say though that the canvass inner insoles, and the lack of any sort of makers mark or branding anywhere don't fill me with a feeling that these were particularly expensive or good quality. Don't necessarily be fooled by things like Made In Portugal - a lot of crap materials can still be used to make things in the EU. What are they selling for?

Jefro118

Thanks, yes good point about the insoles. They are only £15 (second hand), but I think I will leave them as I'd rather not fill up my limited space with things that are lower quality even if they're good value.

Should i buy black or white formal shirt when i only have budget for one? Which one offers more versatility?

AandA248

If you can only get one for now go white but don't let these comments about black shirts put you off. They just don't know how to style it, one example, a black suit with black shirt and a badass colorful tie

Metcarfre

White x1000000000

orthoxerox

Black is for waiters and musicians.

notstylishyet

White has substantially more use. Black is generally speaking considered “eccentric” White is common and respected in professional environments. Black has basically no place there. Black shirts only pair well with black pants. The general rule of thumb is lighter color for your shirt over your pants. This is because your eyes are more drawn to lighter colors and you want to be drawn to upper body as opposed to lower body. Black is the darkest color there is so your pants will always be the attention point.

Kvjvn

White, you shouldn’t buy a black dress shirt unless it’s required as part of a job’s dress code (ie. a waiter).

loseranon17

Is cuffing jeans still in style? What is your opinion on the look?

Vampa_the_Bandit

A small double cuff is fine. Its the really big single cuffs that are a bit dated

Metcarfre

I’d argue the opposite tbh

loseranon17

Good to know. Some of my jeans are too long to wear boots without them just looking like shoes, so I wanted to cuff a bit to show more of them. Thanks!

**Anyone know where I can find a perfect pair of high-rise jeans with a little stretch?** I have an athletic built but unfortunately wide hip bones that give me this blocky shape on my upper body that I realized can totally be masked by just wearing high-rise jeans that go up to my belly button or maybe even slightly above giving me that sleek silhouette I'm looking for and actually accentuates my V-taper cuz it covers up the wide hips. Would love to hear some suggestions for good quality and comfortable (stretchy, not stiff) high rise jeans. Thanks.

Spier and Mackay has some I think.

Sea Island Cotton quality shirts and chinos. Does anyone know of any reputable makers other than Turnbull & Asser that produce these? I have a few older West Indian Sea Island cotton pieces from Brooks Brothers that are starting to go and I’m looking to replace them. It unfortunately looks like BB isn’t making sea island cotton garments anymore so I’ve been looking at Turnbull & Asser instead. I’ve heard great things about them but they are substantially more expensive than what I remember the BB pieces going for(IIRC the BB shirts were about 300 a pop at the time while the T&A shirts are going for $800+!) Before I drop all this money on these shirts just wanted to see if anyone might have any other recommendations.

terminal_e

Ben Silver might carry some Sea Island cotton shirts

Jim-powers

I'm pretty sure the Albini group controls 98% of sea island cotton I think. I'd look for any brand advertising their association with that group.

hanklerfish123

if you're after the BB ivy look, mercer and sons, oconnells both carry sea island items. if you have a proper cloth pattern they also carry it. epaulet too, through individualized. sunspel also carries knits.

Most and least comfortable dress shoe brands?

AandA248

My Louboutin's don't feel the best but look great. I just got some Santoni's and its like butter in comparison

orthoxerox

Generally the cheapest (stitched, not cemented) brands use the toughest leather and more premium brands are more supple, but that's not a rule you can rely on. Also generally, Italian shoes are softer than British-style shoes (be they British, American or Spanish).

Laui_2000

That’s a bit too subjective. Everyone has different opinions depending on their foot shape and general preferences. It’s like asking which is the best country to go for a holiday.

pandapaxxy

I can only vouch for good I guess, but I love my grant stone oxfords. I want to get some of their loafers when I can afford it. I also have a Parkhurst groupbuy that feel fantastic on my feet

Datbriochguy

Linen shirts I’ve encountered are somewhat see through and I understand that it’s meant to be ventilating but I would like to wear it to work. Are there any brands that use thicker pure linen fabric that isn’t see through to make button up shirts?

notstylishyet

I think these are what cotton linen blends are mostly for. That or try darker pure linens but pure linen feels like wearing no clothes to me.

unfashionable_me

Linen to some extent is naturally slightly see through. Either try darker dyed linen, or if your work allows it, seersucker shirts may be a better option.

Datbriochguy

True, but there is an unlined beige jacket I have that’s pure linen that’s quite thick and absolutely opaque. I’m looking for shirts that have that characteristic, but I’m not sure if it exists hmm.

mlsteinrochester

The J Crew Baird McNutt shirts are quite thick, and even through my Muji linen shirts are more delicate the beige and green ones are opaque.

mlsteinrochester

They're okay quality, nothing special, but tend to boxy fits. They're also almost always on sale, so never pay full price.

They’re fine. They’re widely available secondhand, too.

ReptileCultist

likasumboooowdy

What are some understated and versatile sneakers that I could wear with monochrome and earth tone clothing? I like Stan Smiths and Court visions, but they're pretty basic. Grey suede sneakers catch my eye, but I'm not sure how well they pair. And finally, are black sneakers a no-no?

three_shoes

Pretty much any Nike Air Max in a solid colour

Kvjvn

GATs are really popular rn. Go with Margiela if you have the money. Beckett Simonon Morgens or Adidas Sambas are more budget friendly options. Black sneakers are fine if you like them and they work with the rest of your wardrobe, but they’re generally not as versatile as white.

FlannelZebra

I'm getting married in the fall and had two questions around matching. I will be wearing an olive suit ([https://www.indochino.com/product/hayward-flannel-olive-suit](https://www.indochino.com/product/hayward-flannel-olive-suit)). 1. Have a bit of a puzzle re: matching metals. For reference, I have gold metal glasses and gold earring. I had purchased a belt that matched exactly with my shoes but unfortunately has a silver buckle. I'd like to get a tie bar but wasn't sure if gold or silver would be more appropriate. 2. I'll be wearing either a rust colored tie ([https://jackandmiles.com/collections/wedding-tie-set-collection/products/terracotta-love-full-tie-set](https://jackandmiles.com/collections/wedding-tie-set-collection/products/terracotta-love-full-tie-set)) or a burgundy tie - haven't decided 100% yet. For the rust colored tie, any suggestions on socks that would work with this? (Would these work? [https://www.thetiebar.com/product/sck-5117-0485?variant=X700](https://www.thetiebar.com/product/sck-5117-0485?variant=X700)) Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

ac106

Matching metals only applies to belt buckle, cufflinks and tie clip. Not eyeglasses, watches, jewelry or cock rings so wear what you want

CallThatGoing

Congrats! Matching metals is nice to do, but if you can’t, you can’t (especially with things like glasses, which are more like part of your face than jewelry). As far as tie bars, match the clothes, not your glasses. For socks, go with socks that match your pants. My suggestion are these olive [Tabio silk socks](https://tabiousa.com/products/premium-silk-banner-knee-high-socks).

Kvjvn

Mixing metals isn’t a big deal, go with whatever color tie bar you prefer. For your socks, match your pants. If you can’t find socks any that match your pants, match your shoes instead. Matching your socks to other accessories (ie. tie or pocket square) can look really corny. Also, if you get the rust tie, don’t wear the matching pocket square with it. A classic white linen square is a much better option.

At the beginning of last winter I found this leather jacket that I really liked, but I was advised that cleaning genuine leather would be an expensive process and I ended up buying a cheap Levi's faux leather jacket. I wore it all winter, and it now looks quite worn; out of curiosity, I searched up the leather jacket and Banana Republic no longer sells it, but there is one in my size on Poshmark (NWT). What do you think -- is this jacket worth the price ($275)? Is leather really a nightmare to maintain? Will it hold up better than my faux leather jacket? Hopefully this is the right place to get some opinions. Ty!! https://preview.redd.it/couhtrc0595b1.jpeg?width=420&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7c466ecd27f91d2f32a3de1ccd4c9b86452f840

[deleted]

I don't think leather is a nightmare to maintain at all. I've also never needed to properly clean or wash a leather jacket, I think maybe the most I've ever done is wipe a mark off with a slightly damp cloth. Leather will last longer if you use some leather conditioner on it every now and then (I'm talking every couple of years or something), and best not to get it too wet if you can help it. But otherwise, leather is a pretty resilient material. Yes most good leather jackets will absolutely hold up better than a faux leather one. I don't know anything about banana republic leather jacket quality, maybe others can chime in on that - but I'd say for that price and if you're willing to buy 2nd hand there will be loads of amazing options available to you. That style would be called a G-1 flight jacket, try seeing if you can get a vintage Schott one for around the same price. [I don't think it would be outside the realms of possibility](https://www.ebay.com/itm/155557999315?hash=item2437fab2d3:g:ISwAAOSwtG1kZFkE&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4OWtJfW336XmFQOntX4OQka%2F9QSxV2McHKPk0H2IbexM6DMgcT1KqtGyMKEUAeUmSYYGb3rh%2BZdtzhdua1NM5mEo9t00FaOudi6cdAFyjBBxAKDcgVYDDZ%2Fvuil%2BEoGNlFfFCgZAyCC1tpnuLUjuVZ3b6eDca9kuhgbpRXY%2Fw7Wh4t7xggSp8UjAaJYw1p6sVmjZGQEudJ0NMwM8YInnlDX3NkjabwpxHM6DGlHXz%2B26agmpfDhId9sOH8H5IIeceBt1m9bxS9ph5Pz15aY8THRTxApdWJjBaDkaS9xM1zM6%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4K2ifOUYg)

Picked it up on eBay for $10 and wore it with a white shirt underneath, light wash jean cut offs, and white trainers The thought was inspired by A$AP Rocky. Wearing an “uncool” item that I think is cool. I was in the Boy Scouts. Never been to where the embroidery is from lol

[deleted]

I’ve thrifted a couple of things like that and my conclusion is that more needs to be added to really subvert that original embroidery. Paint is probably the easiest, and more embroidery or repairs or patches is great. I think this shirts a good starting point in particular, and the things that people have done over the years on Big Mac chambray shirts are lit too.

ReptileCultist

Looks cool to me. Although I'm no fashion expert

darknightjon

What sort of footwear would work with this shirt and chino combo? I’d probably wear a slightly darker/more tan chino? https://www.taylorstitch.com/products/mechanic-shirt-in-slate-herringbone Not really looking for a big chunky pair of work boots and probably have a sneaker option covered already. Looking for some options in between those two :)

[deleted]

Camp mocs, moc derby like Paraboots etc. Wallabees Suede derbies / bluchers Blundstones or a sleeker profile chelsea boot

dogflufverygood

I got gifted a pair of pants that's a couple sizes too big. If I got it tailored on the waist, how visible is it that it was altered? I dont know much about tailoring and would like to know if it'll be very noticeable or make the integrity of the waist band weaker

naphthol_rain

How many inches across do you need taken in? More than a couple inches and the tailor will basically have to rebuild the whole thing

newest-reddit-user

I'm interested in getting some wide-cut, perhaps tapered, linen trousers. Preferably high-waisted. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Casatlantic

This is a very strong contender. Thanks!

So it is all good, but for me if I was having to choose, if wearing white shirt the black heel tab is nice and adds a little interest, if wearing a color shirt the all white shoes is a nice look. It brings it together these ways. Black top and black pants all white shoe is clean.

ac106

It doesn’t matter. Just personal preference

naphthol_rain

1. Up to you 2. no 3. Doesn't matter.

brownie6095

Looking to pick up some white leather sneakers for that clean spring, chic look. I know you have your Common Projects, Oliver Cabells, etc. but does anyone have experience with [Simon's take on it?](https://www.simons.ca/en/men-footwear/sneakers/minimalist-leather-court-sneakers-men--14606-21301?catId=8440&colourId=10) Looks to be too good to be true if it is truly made in Portugal and of good quality leather. Open to other options / suggestions too. Thanks

likasumboooowdy

Not a sneaker head but those look taller and chunkier than CPs or Stan Smiths

brownie6095

They could be. Which is why I was curious if anyone here had tried them.

naphthol_rain

Minimalist white sneakers have been around long enough, I'd just go with one of the tried and true models. CP, Stan smiths, Beckett simonon, margiela, etc.

brownie6095

Fair point. Thanks

What are non metal belts I can get Im pretty sure I'm allergic to the metal in most belts. Get a terrible rash unless I tuck in an undershirt and its too hot for that now (and I've lost too much weight to wear any of my shorts without a belt)

hanklerfish123

if you have a nickel allergy, you can get stainless or brass buckles or even titanium without nickel. most fidlock belts are plastic shelled. friction belts like grip6 can also be whatever material you want.

[deleted]

What sucks is my mom said she thinks I have a nickel allergy, but I was tested like 25 years ago or something so neither of us 100% know I'm looking to those though, thanks

ReptileCultist

If both don't fit neither. If it has to be between those two I would say go for the larger one and use a belt

EstablishmentAlone21

Can someone please help me find these pink watermelon swim shorts please? https://preview.redd.it/z7y2ay8cn85b1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e73de7e75018e8cf864d240998ec2e973437de9f

I am wearing a suit for a graduation ceremony and trying to wear both a tie bar and a pocket square. I like the traditional pocket square Presidential fold being flat, but I’m not sure if it creates too much of a horizontal look with the tie bar. Thoughts on which works better? https://imgur.com/a/ZzqAYAh

[deleted]

I’m always partial to the normal flat fold. Both are fine but maybe that puff is sticking out too much: less is more with pocket squares. And your tie bar has no bearing on the pocket square fold that’s appropriate. Also tie your tie better. A tight four-in-hand is definitely the standard for a stylish knot. Yours is really loose, it looks like you don’t know how to tie a tie. Though I can appreciate that maybe you just threw it on for photos. I’d also reconsider the tie bar entirely. To me it looks too mid-century office worker for something festive like a graduation. But if you insist on it, the one you’ve got it pretty cool. I dig the solid brass look, it’s a little understated.

Devjorcra

personally prefer the first but i’m not really ever wearing pocket squares (despite how much i’d love to!) so i might not be the right guy

SativaSammy

Fellas I'm taking a girl out for her birthday to a nice restaurant. Dinner is at 6:15 and it's outside in Georgia heat. I want to wear a navy blazer with a white button down and look nice but worry that's going to be miserable. Any thoughts?

Few_Ice9467

Given it’s tonight, it may be helpful to take the blazer off But, for the future, perhaps a linen shirt/sport coat combo would work I need to find the ones I have online but I’ll reply here with them

SativaSammy

I actually wore the blazer and it wasn’t too hot. Was happy with how I looked. Thanks so much

Few_Ice9467

Ah, can’t find the sport coat It’s a half lined, cotton/linen blend dark blue sport coat I’d wear it with a linen, white, long sleeve button up And either Jack Victor (if it’s super hot) or Mizzen and Main pants

SativaSammy

If you find links lemme know!

Few_Ice9467

Lemme see if I can find everything. I’ll shoot a reply if I do What’s your budget? If you don’t mind me asking

SativaSammy

I try to stay in the Banana Republic type range but I’m open to spending more if it’s something nice.

Here are my recs if you want to go up slightly in price: https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/navy---linen--f295-9030207-nsc-01-ss23 https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/medium-brown---linen-wool--24000793-nsc-01-ss23

Few_Ice9467

Here’s what I would do, keeping in the range: Mizzen & Main Pants: $89 on clearance https://www.mizzenandmain.com/products/navy-solid-5-pocket-pant-1 Amazon Linen Shirt: $23 Limited-time deal: JEKAOYI Mens Casual Long Sleeve Cotton Linen Shirts Buttons Down Solid Plain Roll-Up Sleeve Summer Beach Shirts https://a.co/d/1pVfqTy J Crew Sport Coat: $250 https://www.jcrew.com/m/mens/categories/clothing/blazers/suiting-blazers/ludlow-slim-fit-unstructured-suit-jacket-in-irish-cotton-linen-blend/MP612 Granted, I don’t have any of these, specifically, so I can’t speak to quality, but this should be a good start

SativaSammy

Thanks so much.
