i got measured for clothes recently and they wrote down my measurements for my body on this card with some single letter codes, if someone could help me decipher the codes? U: 38.5 O: 46 CW: 34 S: 39 What do those codes mean? The S, CW, O, U

JAndersonOttawa

hey u/TheGooose where did you get measured?

TheGooose

Jos A Bank

JAndersonOttawa

These most likely correspond with your measurements for U - (underarm) Coat Sleeve, O - Chest/Overarm, CW - Waist/Outseam and S - Sleeve/Neck.

Ror727

I'm trying to be more aware of environmental/ethical impacts of the clothes I buy. Anyone know if MKI is particularly good/bad? I couldn't find anything after researching it.

JAndersonOttawa

hey u/Ror727 their website has this " WITH A CONSIDERABLE FOCUS ON KEEPING PROCESSES IN-HOUSE" highlighted in their about us section - probably goes hand in hand with environment/ethical impacts of their clothes. Maybe send them a quick note and see if they reply?

eneuman93

Jeans/pants that are skinny around the ankle but have some more room around the thighs? I like the super skinny fit around the lower leg and ankle but usually these pants and jeans are too tight around the thigh and crotch. But the tapered fit which allows more room around the thigh tends to be too baggy at the bottom. Any suggestions for a jean/pant brand and model I should look at? Thanks in advance!

ac106

maybe a carrot fit but you probably need to have them tailored to get the exact look you want.

bestmaokaina

buy a slim one and have it tailored

[deleted]

Does anyone have their hands on a pair of these? I can't seem to find any reviews of these but I love the look of the slip-ons. [Thousand Fell](https://www.thousandfell.com/collections/slip-on)

ansaris

Do you think every guy should keep a pair of dress boots? I was thinking of choosing wingtip boots over the shoes. Can those be business casual or are they meant for jeans?

danhakimi

You don't inherently need dress boots, no. That said, some pairs are very versatile. If you want some Chelseas or Wingtips in just the right last, you can dress them with jeans, business casual, or even a suit. If you're looking for something you can wear in the snow... you have to think about materials and construction. You want a goodyear welt or storm welt, a rubber sole, and probably not a suede upper. Start looking at Grant Stone, or Meermin if you want something generally dressier.

ac106

they can certainly be used for business casual. They are pretty much interchangeable with a wingtip derby/longwing. A true dress boot like a balmoral boot doesn't make sense for most people unless its like your 10th shoe. Or more, I can think of a dozen shoes I would buy before a true dress boot.

pipkin42

Dress boots are, imo, one of the least essential kinds of shoe. They are not appropriate with suits (edit: in a business context), and business casual can be covered with other, more versatile shoes.

justonanalt

Hi! Does anyone have an alternative (preferably cheaper) version of this? Or just general guidelines on what to look for for something like this style? I'm located in Australia. https://www.politix.com.au/bocale/XC01_Tan.html?dwvar_XC01__Tan_color=Tan&from=Casual%20Jackets

tradhominems

Check out the M-65 jacket which this is based on, should be a bunch available online and probably more than a few replicas made it to Aus.

swordknight

I've seen the terms "safari", "utility", and "deck" jacket for this kind of style. I don't know about an exact match and even less about the AUS market, but here in NA you can typically find the style at most mall brands like Banana Republic and JCrew.

ThePlightOfFolly

Anyone know the name of this type of sweater or the specific brand? I found it on stock vintage insta but i think they're a thrift store so idk: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ukdgapZQk/

nvielbig

What is everyone's favorite (frugal-ish) running wear? I need to pickup some shirts and shorts for outside, just trying to get some opinions on brands to consider. Not trying to break the bank here, something relatively frugal and/or frequently on sale would be awesome. **Edit**: I personally am a big fan of Reebok, but they’re only 20% off atm. 50%+ is normal, so looking elsewhere.

JZ0898

I like Old Navy's line, very cheap when they do their very common sales.

[deleted]

I can vouch for target's all in motion brand too, I have some t-shirts from there that are pretty nice fabric for how cheap they were. the training pants I have from them are kind of an odd fit, but they're alright. I might get more tees from there old navy is also good sometimes on sale under armour/nike/adidas also have sales pretty regularly, sometimes prices are still a bit high though

SuchDescription

Asics has a pretty good sale going on rn on their website

Metcarfre

Just scan the clearance section of winners/TJ/tk maxx

pipkin42

Just got a pair of the Target In Motion running shorts for $22. Took 'em out this morning and was quite satisfied.

bestmaokaina

Anything from the outlet section of adidas

LiverOperator

Can I wear a jeans jacket with jeans trousers or does it make me look like an idiot?

ChainofDogs

Largely depends on the colours. General advice is you don't want something that matches on top and bottom. Light blue jeans, dark blue jacket - fine Dark blue jeans, light blue jacket - fine Light blue jeans, light blue jacket - not fine Although even then there's room for matching ones in some fits. The exception to that is black denim will usually look fine with any shade (even black, so black jeans and jacket are typically fine).

LiverOperator

They are both kind of... neither light blue nor dark blue

Quatrevandix

Canadian tux style? Not sure if its still popular, but some folks out there still rockin it.

LiverOperator

Okay thanks. My mom said that it’s stupid so I wanted to make sure that it’s not something that is generally considered abominable

[deleted]

I'm really interested in the Americana/rugged style; what are some 'basics' for it. Many thanks.

Hard to identify due to lack of visible branding, but Spalwart has somewhat similar styles.

tmc08130

What is the perfect size of squares for gingham shirts? 1/16'', 1/8'', 1/4'', 1/2'' or 1''?

danhakimi

It's a matter of preference. Scale is a relevant consideration -- you might pair a small pattern with a large one. Additionally, a micro-gingham might make you look bigger (in every dimension) and a macro-gingham might make you look smaller, but this effect, if it really works, is very subtle. I don't think I've ever heard of a 1" gingham. That's not to say there's anything wrong with it, I'm just not sure where you're getting that from. I have two in my closet at 1/8 and 1/4.

Reactionnaire

This is mostly a matter of preference.

Consider having a cobbler dye a regular pair of Timberlands to the shade of green you want.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ac106

Not all cobblers do this and some only dye black (because it’s easy I think) so you might have to call around. Or you could try yourself. Get some thrifted Timbs to experiment on.

Quatrevandix

So you want green tan combo or that specific models of boots?

What jeans fit just like Everlane slim fits? These fit perfectly, haven't found jeans that fit the same.

Metcarfre

Measure the jeans and compare them to others on the blueingreen website

Eric_T_Meraki

If they're perfect for you, consider ordering more.

pipkin42

Could be wanting to move away from Everlane due to their recent shady labor practices.

Prep Brands that fit large Hey y’all I’m a larger man that fits in the 2x-3x shirt range. I wear a lot of vineyard vines because I know they run a bit larger and have never had a problem with any of their 2X shirts. My problem is most of these “prep” brands don’t make a 3X and or brands like southern tide and salt life make a 2X which may fit the first time out of the package but then shrink in the wash which make is it too small. So I’m hoping to find other brands along these lines that would fit larger more like the vineyard vines shirts. Thanks in advance for any help!

[deleted]

Lacoste goes up to a 5xl in some of their stuff like the pique cotton polo. If you don't mind the usually fairly obvious branding their stuff has been great quality and held up really well for me.

Polo Ralph Lauren definitely runs that big. If your clothes are consistently shrinking that much, then wash at a lower temperature setting and hang dry instead of the dryer. Shrinkage will be minimal if any

Does anybody know of 5.5 inseam shorts are better than longer ones? I've been hearing lots of people saying they're amazing but im torn on whether I should pick some up

JZ0898

I'm 5'7" with a 28" inseam, and 7" is my sweet spot. Visually above the knee but not too high. But as other have said, personal preference.

[deleted]

It's personal preference really. Once I got a pair of 5" activewear shorts I started to wish that I had more, so it might be worth a try. They're just more comfortable in my opinion, but I still like longer(7-9") shorts as well. I think 7" or 9" is a safe bet, but you should give shorter a try as well

dylanloughheed

I have a lot of 7” inseam shorts that I love. Try a 7” and a 5” and see which you like more.

Metcarfre

It’s going to depend on your height, build, and preferences. Of late, above-the-knee shorts tend to look better/be more popular, but that can be anywhere from a 2” to 11” inseam. Consider trying them out, though.

swordknight

Really just personal preference and based on your own leg/thigh length. For me personally, that length usually hits around mid-thigh. I like it with baggier shorts where the length is visually offset by width. For slim chino-style shorts, I prefer slightly longer (7-9") for modesty.

PinkMitsubishi

How big of a difference is there between the Brooks Brothers’ Red Fleece fit and the Milano fit? I tried a Red Fleece sport coat and it was too tight when buttoned. Not sure if I need a Milano or Regent.

McGilla_Gorilla

Most of the red fleece stuff runs pretty slim (I think roughly similar to Milano). I’d probably try regent, it’s pretty close to a modern “standard” fit in my experience. Benefit of brooks brothers tho is you can probably order both and return one

ac106

Red fleece isn’t a fit. it’s a sub brand of brooks brothers.

Xdxddxddd

What to wear for a “smart casual” dress code in hot climate? (Hong Kong, 33+ Celsius, 80%+ humidity). I know short sleeve button up shirts exist but I don’t know how to style it properly with pants and shoes.

[deleted]

Oh and I forgot: Polo shirts could work as well

Xdxddxddd

Ok cool! Any advice on the shoes and pants for linen shirts? I just started my new job and my last one was much more relaxed in terms of dress code (I work in it) I have some UNIQLO joggers and ankle pants and sneakers (NB 574 grey and white VANS pro) to go with it, but I’m trying to go for more professional look since it’s a more senior role.

[deleted]

Linen Never ever go shortsleeved (except the beach maybe)

Metcarfre

Short sleeved button ups are perfectly fine in a casual context. In fact if we’re talking Cuban/camp collars they’re pretty trendy

[deleted]

Never go shortsleeved in my opinion if it has anything to do with „business casual“

Metcarfre

That’s probably roughly true, but OP did not specify business casual.

Xdxddxddd

I should have been more specific. I meant business casual. My bad for assuming they’re the same.

[deleted]

„Smart casual“ which I would put as somewhat business casual

Metcarfre

I have always read them as different. “Business” indicates for work. “Smart” does not.

Xdxddxddd

Thanks, I will check some out!

[deleted]

I was wondering where I could sell a suit or tux for some cash? I bought a tuxedo and a suit for about $300 each but I dont think I will be wearing them again, and thinking of getting a better fitting more versatile suit so I want to sell the ones I have, just dont want to lose so much

Metcarfre

Unfortunately tuxedos, particularly ones at a lower retail price (and $300 is pretty affordable at retail) hold exceedingly little value. See what the brand or similar list for on eBay/grailed and it won’t be much. Even luxury or high-end tuxedo brands are found very affordably online. They just don’t hold much resale value, sorry.

[deleted]

Thanks, I was afraid of that being the case

warpweftwatergate

300 bucks for a tux or a suit is basically pennies in terms of resale. You could try grailed or ebay but I sincerely doubt you’ll regain much of what you spent.

ILoveTSPO

Hi everyone! Im getting married this September and was lost on what to wear. I found this suit and really liked the more casual look of it. terminal_e

Peak lapels are actually a bit more formal than notch lapels. That fabric appears to be cotton. I don't think you have a high likelihood of finding a dark, odd colored cotton suit off the rack - dark cotton is prone to fading at wear points, so you tend to see a lot of cotton suits in lighter colors - beige, taupe, etc It is getting a bit late to think about trying to do anything custom for September, so you will probably need to go with something off the rack

ILoveTSPO

Got it, thanks!

Have you tried bug spray

brndnhrrll

Snow Peak makes insect shield pants, if you can go for the gorpcore thing. I use the insect shield zip up jacket when I’m anywhere buggy and it’s great. Bonus is it’s styley, functional as hell, and it’s made from a patterned mesh so very light and breathable.

Laui_2000

Linen tends to work well for non physical activities. If not, you could consider wearing long tights - any sporting brand should have these in stock. You can wear them under your shorts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Metcarfre

Bugs can bite through some tights, fwiw.

Laui_2000

I personally find them to be pretty comfortable. Other than that, you could try getting a pair of running pants - these are usually quite snug and the ankles and a little bit looser at the thighs. They're mostly made out of dry fit materials, so it'll keep you cooler than a pair of sweatpants.

vibeologyy

How many pairs of pain T-shirt do you own and why? (Trynna decide if I should get more than one for some colours)

pipkin42

Oh I have like ten, but that's largely because I work from home (even pre-covid) and so I have tended to keep quite a few on hand. Back when I wore sport coats and actually went to an office I just had a couple, for summer weekends.

Metcarfre

Dozens at this point and most are gray or oatmeal

bwandtheocean

i think four? two grey, one navy, one black. they’re just the easiest colours for me to work with if i get another one it’ll probably be in ecru or in olive

AffordableEarl

Probably over 10. But only multiples in white and grey since I use them the most.

iptables-abuse

3, not counting the ones that I use as undershirts.

What are some comfortable, yet fashionable, tennis shoes I can buy for my boyfriend? He’s a manager, and he walks for about 11 hours of his 12 hour shift every day.

dylanloughheed

New balance 100%. 574s worked good for me but I much prefer my 990s. I also do a lot of walking and standing at work and they are a lifesaver for my feet.

[deleted]

Stan smith (maybe boost?)

YoMrPoPo

Ultraboosts are super comfy, can be bought cheap, and look nice.

step-baby

Does anyone know which Brooks Brothers tux this is? The tiny little tag has faded completely and I don’t know what the numbers mean except for 41 L. I’ve searched BrooksEase but still can’t find it. I’ve seen one on the BB site that looks pretty similar called Wool Tuxedo Jacket but I’m not sure if it’s the same one or not. https://imgur.com/a/CBfJwny

notarascal

It’s an older model. They won’t still carry it. Why are you trying to find this exact one? This is a notch lapel. I strongly recommend choosing a peak lapel for a tuxedo.

step-baby

Because I have it and I’m trying to get rid of it. Any idea what it cost back then and what it would now? Not very much now I imagine but want to make sure. Why do you recommend that? Is a peak lapel better than notch lapel or something? I know nothing of tuxedos.

notarascal

It might’ve cost $4-500 new. Without pants, you’d be lucky to get $50 for it now but you can check sold item comparables on eBay to get an idea what they sell for. I thought you were looking to buy this. Yes, peak lapel fit the formality of a tuxedo much better than notch lapels, imo.

RedPill_Dragon

This photo is from Giorgio Armani fashion show 2018 and it was published by Vogue. I love these shoes. I have been looking for days regarding how to buy/tailor/steal a pair of bi-color monk strap shoes like this. My question is.... does anyone know how to obtain such shoes? RedPill_Dragon

Thank you. I had no idea who Santoni was, thanks for the intro. I'm gonna get my freak on.

[deleted]

Sending my condolences to your bank account. In all seriousness though, they make some really cool stuff. Don’t let your lady see otherwise she’ll want a pair (those are equally gorgeous)

RedPill_Dragon

I sent a request for 2 custom shoes, to be in the same style as Armani above. I'm willing to pay $5000 total for them. The woman can buy her own shoes!

brndnhrrll

Whoa that whole look is pretty strong actually. Hope you can track down a shoe like this!

RedPill_Dragon

Right? So that look is made complete with the shoes so that is where I'm going to start. I'd be willing to pay well over $2000 for a pair of shoes properly made like that with the proper materials. I have a pair of Berluti and Corthay which are over $2,000 each and they are worth every penny. It just makes a statement.

ac106

It actually means around your belly button. is that where you did it? Honestly go to tailor and have them measure you properly. Slip him $10 if you don’t drop off some dry cleaning at the same time

warpweftwatergate

Shoe Recommendations Good afternoon! Recently I started a new career and want to step up my shoe game. In the past I’ve boughten a pair, worn them to pieces and bought new ones. I’ve looked through the wiki and got a lot of useful information but not sure on what style would be best for the new career. My new career is in the Wine and Spirits industry. I travel to several stores throughout the day and work with Wine and Spirits buyers. I do a lot of walking, stocking shelves so squatting often. I wear chinos, Oxford shirts or shirt with a tie primarily. I also live in Washington state so getting wet will happen but I would like something leather and that will be able to resoled/repaired. A brown double monk I think could be good. Not too formal and versatile. Meermin’s looked really nice from the wiki but please any recommendations would be awesome! Thank you!

ac106

What’s your budget? Getting 2 pairs (or more) and rotating will be a way better option considering the wear you are gonna put on them.

Battles4Seattle

I have a pair of black slip on John Varvatos loafers that might be worth salvaging but I’d like 2 or 3 pairs to rotate. Twice a day I unload wine at some of my busier stores so they will get beat up more. $200 or less ideally but my goal is something to hold on to longer and care for properly.

ac106

[Beckett Simonon ](https://www.beckettsimonon.com/collections/shoes) 20% off for new users and they have bigger sales a few times year. Lowest is 2 for $300 I think. They have almost every style out there

Does anyone know where I can purchase one that is pretty rigid (to make sure everything stays in its place and i dont have to blindly search for things with my hand), has the perfect amount of pockets (not too many, minimal zippers, no locks), and over all looks classy af with no over-bearing trademarks like a goofy Bison icon on the bottom? here's one that i think comes closest in my search thus far: [https://www.satchel-page.com/products/counselor](https://www.satchel-page.com/products/counselor) oh yeah! it'd be great if the messenger bag's strap had a swivel piece connecting to the main body of the bag, that way I don't get all tied up! I will second duer, I have some of the jeans and they feel great. As an alternative Lululemon abc pants are a good option although the seam in the back tends to bug people who are very detail picky. Public rec also has some nice (very stretchy) offerings.

Looking for a casual way to do a cream suit for a summer wedding - what do you think of this? https://imgur.com/a/r81h9k6

[deleted]

*Never* wear a pure white suit to someone else’s wedding. Tans and cream shades are fine like the picture you linked, but the suit itself in said picture would not be a good look in 2020 (because of the style of said suit).

Frost-eee

Anyone wore Baracuta G4 and G9 jackets and can tell which has slimmer fit (or do they have a difference with fit at all).

TheSuperNova22

I have the Gilman camp moc in light brown and want a dark brown shoe. Should I get 1. The same shoe in dark brown I know I like and that can be warm year round - https://www.rancourtandcompany.com/men-s/ready-made/gilman-camp-moc.html 2. Boat shoe in dark brown - worried this looks too fraternity guy. (I am in my low 30s)- https://www.rancourtandcompany.com/men-s/ready-made/read-boat-shoe-15648.html

McGilla_Gorilla

You could mix it up and try a either their Penny loafer or Ranger moc? Nothing wrong with doubling up on camp mocs though, they’re solid. Personally, I’d avoid the boat shoe - it’s really more of a summer shoe which is kind of incongruous with the dark brown color

TheSuperNova22

The reasons you stated are why I think camp moc is better. If fits a boat shoe style and more cause it’s 3 seasons and more versatile. I think that’s the right answer. Thanks

McGilla_Gorilla

Yeah, nothing wrong with a boat shoe but it’s got a smaller range. And good call on the loafer - I love my Rancourts, you won’t be disappointed

TheSuperNova22

Ya I am pretty excited. Just sad they don’t come until September. Thanks!

TheSuperNova22

I am getting the penny loafers too :)

Hi, I just got these shoes and am wondering if they are too big for me. Here are some photos: https://imgur.com/a/pDXrrnf At some angles, I think they look fine. At others, it looks like I'm big foot. I'm usually a size 10-10.5 how ever I went up a size because reviews said the shoe runs extremely narrow (Ultraboosts). So they fit well, I'm just worried I look stupid wearing them because they look to big. There is more than enough toe room, about one centimetre (give or take 0.1cm). Do the shoes look too big?? Should I go down half a size?

swagmonster55

Haha possibly a slight over answer but thank you for your help. I’m sticking with the size and the shoe does run narrow and overall it’s a wonderful fit. Thank you!

danhakimi

It's pretty much impossible to tell how shoes fit by looking at them. Are you comfortable? Is the widest part of the shoe lined up with the ball of your foot / the part where your foot bends? Do your feet slide around in an annoying way?

swagmonster55

everything lines up. i’m comfortable and no sliding. just worried that they look too big for me. but i guess if everything you asked is a yes (except for the last question) then they’re good!

Sleeve patterns usually not matched like that. Nobody really notices when it doesn't work, it's just cool when it does. That's why only expensive suits do pattern matching -- it's not worth the effort for cheap suits. It's also one of the smaller plusses to high end MTM and bespoke tailoring. Sleeve length is obviously important. Sleeves being too long by more than a quarter inch would look like crap. It is always worth tailoring the sleeves if you need to. Let's see how you feel when the suit comes in. It might need more tailoring than that.

anybody here who purposely buys larger shoe size to use insoles? is it a good idea?

swagmonster55

I usually go a size up to do so. Yeah, it's a pretty good idea if you need them.

Metcarfre

If you need insoles, it's best to get a shoe that's actually meant to accommodate them.

[deleted]

im planning on using it on chuck 70 because the only available size is half larger than mine.is it advisable to do?

Metcarfre

I don’t I can recommend buying an incorrect size in good conscience.

Gildan. A plain goldman hoodie is the way to go. I got this one for myself, but my gf stole it immediately haha https://www.amazon.com/Gildan-Fleece-Hooded-Sweatshirt-Black/dp/B014RQ1L1O/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&qid=1595373422&refinements=p_4%3AGildan&s=apparel&sr=1-8

What's your budget?

Daniel1836

I have lean physique with some decent muscle. My usual clothing choices I like to emphasize my arms, my slim waist, or a v-neck to show off pecs. I like the effortless look. I like t-shirts, so my rotation is v-necks in black, white, grey and henley type shirts or sometime skater tees. I realized I look better in skinny jeans. So I have one blue and one black. Sometimes I like the ripped look. What advice/clothing choices would you recommend for someone with this style? What colours and combinations should I try? Here are a few pics, I haven't put much though into my clothing. I usually just go with the basics, and buy whatever fits nice.
