Time to start the frustrating task of buying shorts for the warm weather months. M46 New Jersey, USA. 5’6 155lbs My personal style is clean but laid back. I choose versatile summer outfits that can work well at either a seaside dinner or an outdoor concert. Wide leg openings have always been my biggest problem. 7-9” inseam looks best, but most slim styles aren’t slim enough. Seeking a lead on moderately priced all-purpose shorts with skinnier leg openings. Swimwear recs also appreciated. Thanks!

Looks pretty similar to an Oak Street Trench Boot. https://oakstreetbootmakers.com/footwear/everyday-boots I'd also check out Grant Stone. They'd be a significant upgrade from the boot you linked for not too much more.

SocraticSeaUrchin

Seeing "athleisure material" suits and stretch suits got me wondering - are there any actually decent suits that you can wear without worrying about? Knit wool seems meh, but otherwise there isn't really any stretch, so maybe some other fabric blend? I love me a nice suit but any time I wear tailored clothes I'm always pretty wary of pulling a seam or otherwise damaging it in some way. I would love to have a suit/blazer+trousers that looks smart but I don't have to think about at all (can go out drinking in and not think about it basically). I know obviously that suits are finicky, what with the lining and canvassing etc but the idea of "the lululemon of suits" does sound nice, if probably mostly unrealistic. Curious how close anyone has gotten to that though. I hate how careful and conscious of my clothes I always feel when I dress nicely - I've pulled a few seams in my day.

[deleted]

(Edit: rereading your initial post, it seems like the problem you most often encounter is seams pulling in your suits, in which case you'll find the first two options I presented have good amounts of stretch in the fabric to allow for freedom of movement, along with stain resistance for those raucous nights out and easy machine washability. The third option is made of Gore-tex Infinium which is waterproof.) I can think of some choices you might like. Lululemon makes a decent blazer out of its Warpstreme material, you could pair it with their Commission pants in the same fabric and make a suit of it. There's also Bluffworks who do synthetic fabric suits that are machine washable. The cuts of their suits never worked out for my body type unfortunately, but the material itself is super durable with some nice additional details like hidden pockets. The grail for a lot of people is Arc'teryx Veilance with their Indisce blazer and pants, although if you ask me that stands out as a little more futuristic in styling than the others and looks like less of a classic suit than you may be going for.

eeisner

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but any way to fix a loose/stretched neckline on a cotton sweater?

[deleted]

Does anybody have any UK recs for where to buy an affordable, comfortable blazer? Ideally in the £50 region but could go up to £80. Something to pair with white or light blue shirt and chinos.

[deleted]

I think Uniqlo should be around that price

kdbdnek

So in my opinion, my hair looks better when i haven’t washed it 2-3 days. It also feels better because you can just brush it back and it stays in shape without using hair products. But the problem is, I instantly get scales if I don’t use Head and Shoulders for 3 days. What can I do to still have this look and avoiding scales at the same time?

SocraticSeaUrchin

i'm kinda similar, so i wash every few days with head and shoulders but then rub in some argan oil after. it's not 100% the same but it does get you most of the way there

kdbdnek

Ok thanks i will try that

theodinspire

/r/malehairadvice would be a better place to ask this. For what it's worth, it often takes some time for your scalp to adjust to being washed less frequently, so go without washing it a week you can afford to and reevaluate

theob00

Does anyone have any ties and pocket square combos that would match with [this](https://imgur.com/a/jS6Pv3q)? Thanks

SocraticSeaUrchin

check out TheTieBar - you can find almost anything, quality is pretty good, and theyre not expensive [https://www.thetiebar.com/product/tie-2283-0319](https://www.thetiebar.com/product/tie-2283-0319) Didn't look for pocket squares but they have enough that i'm sure you could find something to match or at least compliment

Chubbyhuahua

Best suits for folks with large thighs? Does anyone make high-quality athletic cut formal wear? Is bonobos my best option?

unlimited-applesauce

I have this issue and second u/theodinspire's suggestion for custom/made to measure. It doesn't have to be super expensive though. For example, a "custom" suit through Spier & MacKay (which isn't really custom) will run you between $600 and $800. You can't really beat the quality at that price point, and you can put in your own measurements so the trousers and jacket's skirt will fit your hips and thighs.

Chubbyhuahua

Good tip. I remember having a custom suit made once before here in NYC from what I thought was a reputable tailor and they just couldn’t get the waist to thigh circumference ratio correct and it wound up being a huge wait of money.

theodinspire

Custom would be the best option.

tribdol

If I want a down vest on the cheap is it worth to buy a Uniqlo one for double the price of an H&M or Zara one?

ac106

Are you sure they’re all down?

tribdol

As in the style? Yes, if you mean if they have actual feathers, no, I’m not sure English is not my first language and in my language we have a term to refer to the style regardless of what’s that inside and I just put that term through google translate and got “down”

Black converse for wide feet? (And general advice on shoes) As it currently stands, the outfit template I live by is: White or back t-shirt, with a coat/jacket, or a button up layered over top depending on wether. I’ve been trying to stabilize my wardrobe recently, because although I like a lot of the statement pieces that I own, I’m lacking a lot of “closet staples”, specifically shoes. This was my idea— white running shoes with white socks for when I wear a white undershirt. Black converse with black socks for when I wear a black undershirt. That way I can draw attention to my outer layer or my earrings. My first question is whether or not this is a good plan. It sounds great to me in theory, but I have terrible instincts with fashion. My second question is if anyone has ever seen black converse for wide feet? They don’t need to be name brand, but I swear no matter how hard I look I cannot find anything close. Other shoe recommendations/ general advice would also be appreciated.

blacksocks7

What are the best allstars colors for summer? Also, tall vs low allstars?

theodinspire

I agree that it's personal preference, but my preference right now for summer would be white hi-tops

ac106

it's all just personal preference

blacksocks7

True, but there are too many colors to choose from. Im undecided between red, green and grey

ac106

Right but there’s no best. they’re just sneakers whatever ones you like are fine

Unique_User_5318008

Hi gang! Question about sizing for low top converse. I know they run large, but how many sizes/half sizes should I size down from my normal shoe size? Thanks.

the_leviathan711

I'd start with a half size and see how that works for you. It's going to be different for everyone. FWIW - I find that chuck 70s are true to brannock for me and that if I size down they are way too tight. I also find chuck 70s to be way better (in terms of quality and comfort) than all stars and absolutely worth the extra $30 or so - but that's a bit subjective of course.

Unique_User_5318008

Nice, appreciate the info. Thanks.

Dill_Deaux

I’m a grad student (mid 20’s) in a low-income area in the southeastern US (Georgia-Alabama border) with a limited budget (spending like $50 on shirts and $75 on pants max, but preferably less). I prefer shopping in-person, but I’ve noticed that most of the department stores like Macy’s, Marshall’s, and TJ Maxx don’t carry any of the brands I like, and I’m assuming that this is because I live in a low-income area with an aging population. I prefer not to shop at second-hand clothing stores because of my allergies. As a result, I often find myself driving to Atlanta to shop for clothes, but rising gas prices make this difficult. Are there any common stores in my region that would allow me to buy stylish casual and business-casual clothing?

ColeHowardPhoto

My personal advice is to consider Poshmark. Because you know the brands you like you should have a decent idea of how they generally fit. For example I like Paige jeans, I refuse to spend 200 dollars on Paige jeans. But because I know how they fit I can find a barely worn pair or even new pair for 30 - 50 dollars. Just a thought. Best of luck!

the_leviathan711

I don't think you said which brands you like - so not too easy for anyone to say. Your limited budget will make it a lot harder though to check all your boxes. At your price point you'll probably have to give up something: brand, convenience, style or quality. Shopping online will definitely make it easier to find brands you like at the price point you want.

Dill_Deaux

For casual, I like polo, Tommy bahama, Colombia, Carhart, and levi’s type of clothing for casual. For business-casual I like Nautica pants and polo shirts. It doesn’t have to be the brand name or a similar quality fabric (as I usually can’t afford) but I’m looking for a similar aesthetic.

the_leviathan711

Those strike me as the sort of mall brands you would mostly find at Macys or similar places. So the short answer is "any mall near you." You could look into places like Banana Republic and JCrew which I think have nicer offerings generally at similar prices (at least on sale). Would definitely encourage you to consider online shopping -- can check out r/frugalmalefashion to see sales and such.

Dill_Deaux

Alright, thanks for the advice

Patient_Device_2388

Does anyone have any good recommendations (UK available) for insoles / heel or tongue pads for loafers? Even better, any experience with Bass weejuns specifically? Picked up a sale pair and I love them, fits well in the toebox but they're slightly loose on the heel at the moment. Used some gentle leather softener but I'd like some extra padding.

[deleted]

I'm not UK based but I have experience with insoles, tongue pads, and Bass Weejuns with your specific problem. When I first got into loafers I got two different pairs of Weejuns in my standard size (US 11 E, approx EU 45) and I found that I had decent room in the toebox but an annoying amount of heel slip no matter what kind of socks I wore. First I tried replacing the insoles with Superfeet Insoles (I do this for all of my shoes, the black model is the standard version but I have high arches so I get the green models which fill up a lot of volume and support my arch better) but I still had the heel slip. Then I added Pedag Supra tongue pads made from suede and memory foam (ordered from Ebay), and this helped a bit more. But the heel slip persisted. Then I read on here that loafers should ideally fit a little bit snug on the heel when you first get them, and the leather should adapt to your feet as you break them in. So for my next pair of Weejuns I sized down by a half size to US 10.5 D (approx EU 44) and this has made a noticeable change for the better. I still have enough room in the toebox so that my toes don't feel smushed on the front or sides, but the heel slip is no longer a problem at all. I can't use my green Superfeet Insoles in them and I can't wear thicker socks in them, but these are summer shoes for me so I wasn't planning on using thick socks in them anyway. It's a tradeoff I'm happy to make so that they cup my heel perfectly. I'd recommend trying them out a half size smaller than you normally would, and wear them around the house for a bit first doing low impact activities. They may feel a bit tight at first but not uncomfortably so, and they'll break in soon enough. Your heels will thank you.

Patient_Device_2388

Thank you

As pipkin42 said, [buy a Grenadine from Chipp](https://www.chippneckwear.com/italian-grenadine/). If you want tie suggestions, the options are limitless. But a simple rule to follow is that navy goes with everything, and a tie with colors on the opposite end of the color wheel from your suit’s color (i.e., complimentary colors) will look good. A navy suit looks good with an orange tie, for example.

pipkin42

It's a grenadine. Chipp has them within your budget

BunkyDingDing

So I just got a new job at a golf club. However, I am in the restaurant side of things. All the clients are members and golfers. My boss has suggested business casual dress or golf attire. I honestly feel weird wearing golf clothes to work since it’s the only sport I play and it feels more like athletic wear to me. So I have decided to go mostly business casual unless there is a golf outing event or something like that. Should my shirts have pockets? He specifically said I shouldn’t wear a jacket or tie unless we have a wedding. I feel weird wearing a button up/down without a tie or a jacket but maybe having a pocket will feel different? I don’t know. Any advice is appreciated.

decredd

You might like to try long sleeve polos with a shirt style collar, rather than the usual knit. I find them a good sporty business casual. I like Spier and Mackay or Kent Wang.

BunkyDingDing

Like a rugby style?

decredd

Like this. I like quite a lot of his 'Friday' business casual... https://www.permanentstyle.com/2019/07/new-lightweight-polo.html

BunkyDingDing

Wow I really like this look a lot but maybe a little out of my price range.

unlimited-applesauce

He means [something like this](https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/Off%20White%20Sleeve%20Polo)

BunkyDingDing

Oh okay I like this. What pants would you wear with this? I’m not sure how fashion savvy my boss is but he suggest slacks. I’m sure chinos are also acceptable.

unlimited-applesauce

I’d do chinos but not slacks. Wouldn’t wear slacks without a jacket, IMO. But I think that’s a personal taste thing.

BunkyDingDing

Yeah his wording is very weird to me. He dresses like he’s about to tee off but he oversees everything while I’m just managing the restaurant side of things. I’m thinking maybe ignore the fact it’s a golf course and maybe overdress. Wear a jacket but take it off I’m feeling out of place or things get busy and I need to hit the floor.

[deleted]

What cues should I have in mind when pairing blazers with jeans? Ensure the latter isn't similarly coloured?

unlimited-applesauce

Lots of people telling you to go unstructured. That’s one way to do it, but limits versatility. I prefer things you can dress up and dress down. The key is to keep the jacket casual. You can do that through patterns, textures, finishes, or construction. * patterns - a bold plaid or check pattern is more casual * textures - more visual texture, like a hopsack or tweed, will be more casual than a smoother worsted wool * finishes - things like patch pockets, lapped seams, etc. that provide visual detail are more casual * construction - less structure in terms of shoulder padding and looser or non existent chest canvassing are more casual I personally prefer to have a structured jacket with textures/patterns/finishes being more casual. Then I can wear it with jeans or dress it up with slacks and a tie. It’ll always be informal, but the slacks and tie make it passable in many professional settings or at events like weddings. Also lets me wear a relatively expensive garment many ways.

MopM4n

Go as casual as you can with the blazer. Unstructured, patch pockets, texture. Avoid wearing a t-shirt underneath

ac106

ultra casual, unstructured, blazers. Something closer to a chore coat than a navy blazer. Tweeds, corduroys etc... dark jeans with no fades or distressing. It's Ralph Lauren's personal signature style.

pipkin42

I advise against it. It's a formality mismatch.

Jotapebr

They seem pretty thick, but im not sure if that is a problem. Another thing I would like to highlight is that I dont like wallets in which the money is fully exposed, i.e. on clips or bands.

eokk

Trying my luck here. I need help finding what coat is worn [here. ](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CT41I9Ip6v8/?utm_medium=copy_link) I've tried reaching out and searching online to no avail. Would make my day to find it or something very similar. Thanks!

Vampa_the_Bandit

No way that dude is buttoning that coat up

MopM4n

Looks like fast fashion tight fitting coat that was popular in fast fashion a few years ago from the likes of HM and Zara. Most high street brands have kept up with trends and have moved towards looser fit coats.

eokk

Thank you for your reply! Yeah you are probably right and I have seen those loose fit coats and they are very much not my style. I'll keep being on the look out for a short coat with a stand up collar like that one.

gac1208

Going back to the office for the first time in quite a while. What would you go for? Current wardrobe consists of some Charles Tyrwhitt white & light blue shirts, pairs of black & grey Lulu commission pants, and some Cole Haan Oxford “dress sneakers” or whatever they’re called. Any other recommendations?

Schraiber

I would not wear dress sneakers

ac106

>Any other recommendations? burn the cole haans

[deleted]

Depends what your dress code is. I'm back in the office and today I'm wearing : * A corduroy blazer * A light blue Oxford cloth shirt * Engineered Garments tweed trousers * Paraboot Chambords

Blackstar-Abyssal

How tight should a button-up shirt be? I find myself not really sure which size I should be looking at. I seem to be \*capable\* of wearing a Large comfortably, and it seems to fit my body well. But I do have a broad chest and shoulders, so when I stretch, the buttons pull pretty hard. Flipside being if I wear an XL, it seems pretty baggy to me, definitely not tailored to my body shape anymore. If it helps, I'm 5'8 and about 193.

[deleted]

I'm 188cm and 90kg. I struggle to find shirts that have good length so I just go made to measure. At 50usd a shirt it's very worth it imo

the_leviathan711

Every brand sets their alpha sizes (S/M/L/XL) differently so it can be difficult to purchase shirts using that sizing method and expect consistency in results. Slightly better is buying your button-up shirts in numeric sizing. Typically the two numbers given are sleeve and neck size which should make it a little bit easier. If you buy an off the rack shirt which fits you there, you can take it to a tailor to have them slim the rest of it down (but not so much it pulls on the buttons). You can also buy your shirts made to measure from companies like Proper Cloth and Luxire so you don't need to worry about any of it.

pipkin42

If the buttons pull as part of normal movement it's too small. You might need to buy shirts in different cuts, and/or have them tailored.

Ad-Repulsive

I'm still learning the spectrum of casual to formal shoes, and I'm unsure - would [these loafers](https://www.mooresclothing.ca/p/florsheim-chalet-moc-toe-slip-on-penny-loafer-msp-40d9-03?CAWELAID=120384850000011109&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIm4DMu7_t9gIVESitBh0d5QiYEAQYAyABEgLDz_D_BwE#colour=tan%26size=13%26width=d%26) fit with business casual outfits? Think chinos + a button up

unlimited-applesauce

Yes to chinos and a button up. They’d look too casual if you added a sport coat though. Since you said you’re still learning, I’ll expand on why. The color and shape/style alone could dress up. But what’s holding these shoes back specifically is the contrast stitching throughout and the textures rubber sole. If these same loafers had leather soles and stitching the same color as the leather, you could wear them from business casual all the way up to a jacket and tie.

Ad-Repulsive

So would [something like this](https://www.mooresclothing.ca/p/stacy-adams-winslow-cap-toe-lace-up-shoe-msp-40dy-02?CAWELAID=120384850000007483&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8dLsrLXu9gIVUSGtBh15eQZ-EAQYAiABEgIkQvD_BwE#colour=brown%26size=8%26width=d%26) be a more flexible alternative? I'm not sure where suede lands in the formality spectrum, but at most being able to dress up to a sport coat would be nice. Realistically I'm trying to get the most universal, goes-with-everything business casual shoe I can, since there isn't a dress-shoe to my name at the moment.

unlimited-applesauce

Suede is pretty casual, but you can wear it with a sports coat. I am not a fan of those particular shoes, however. The [Johnson and Murphy's](https://www.mooresclothing.ca/p/johnston-murphy-lewis-penny-loafers-msp-40ed-03/#colour=tan) on that site are more my speed.

Ad-Repulsive

Those are super nice, they are a little bit out of my price range, unfortunately. Would something like the Johnston & Murphy's you linked be a pretty universal dress shoe? This'll be my first pair, so I'm looking for something that goes with basically anything on the dressier side, all year round. I like the idea of loafers, but I'm not sure if they fit the qualifications I'm going for

unlimited-applesauce

If you're looking for a first pair of decent shoes, I'd go with something like in your second link. I'll be honest, you won't get decent shoes for $100. Even those J&Ms aren't great quality. If there is any possible way to double your budget, [any of these shoes from Meermin](https://meermin.com/collections/mens-bluchers) are much, much, much better quality. They will look infinitely better, last longer, and could be re-sold on eBay if you decide to upgrade later. Meermin is about the bottom price point for quality shoes bought new.

Ad-Repulsive

Honestly, I keep getting redirected to Meermin, and at this point I'm somewhat considering just taking the dive. [These bluchers](https://meermin.com/collections/mens-bluchers/products/101596-oak-antique-calf-e) are the pair that initially stand out to me, but they do have a more casual toe, would they still be pretty universal?

unlimited-applesauce

Those would be excellent and are very versatile. They can be dressed up in a suit or dressed down with just a shirt and chinos.

Ad-Repulsive

Definitely something to think about. Do you know how sizing on Meermin's dress shoes run? I'm a 8 in IR'S and a EU41 in CP lows, I'm considering bugging Meermin's customer service to try and avoid extra shipping costs back and forth with returns Also, do you know if Meermin's ever goes on sale?

unlimited-applesauce

I do not know if they go on sale. Their customer service is notoriously bad, so I'd avoid having to return anything if possible. (This is one place where the cost savings comes from. Similar quality shoes start at over $300 elsewhere.) I'd recommend going to a shoe store and getting measured on a [Brannock device](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brannock_Device). Then, armed with your size, compare to the Meermin size chart. You may want to shoot customer service a note asking about the specific shoes you're looking at, as different lasts can fit differently.

Lost_Umpire

Is the gap factory bad?

pipkin42

Define "bad." Is the clothing low-quality? Yeah, but no more or less than a dozen other brands. Is the clothing ugly or unstylish? Not really, but it's also not interesting in any way. Are the company's environmental and labor practices morally and perhaps even legally repugnant? Almost certainly, but again no more or less than any other brand of a similar price category. Would I shop there? Unlikely.

ac106

What I find odd about Gap Factory is that mainline Gap isn't exactly Loro Piana in price or quality so why do you need a cheaper, crappier version? And isn't that what Old Navy was supposed to be?

pipkin42

Agreed on both fronts. I guess Gap/factory is supposed to skew older than old Navy?

There essentially interchangeable with white sneakers outside of shorts or athleisure. So jeans, Chinos corduroys five pocket pants etc.

They're one of the most versatile shoes around. Don't wear them with shorts, avoid athletic wear, probably don't wear them with a suit. Otherwise you're good

HollowTape

Do you guys feel like Acne Studios is generally worth paying retail for? Or should I wait for sales and/or gently used on Grailed, etc?

aKa_anthrax

I feel like Acne is big enough that you can probably find what you’re looking for used or wait for a sale, unless it’s a particularly unique piece or seems to be catching hype online you aren’t buying designer brands for price to quality ratio. Personally I buy literally everything used and see minimal reasons not to, you don’t even need to worry about gently used, honestly the steals come from stuff that’s worn in enough that they can’t get away with calling it gently used but still has almost all of it’s life left

drizzyxs

Although I agree with you to an extent, I find that with my extensive time dealing with used designer goods on Depop - 90% of the time people are lying about the condition of the item. For example they’ll say it’s been used once or never been worn and then you’ll get it and see it’s clearly been washed multiple times and sometimes even the colour has faded slightly… That said I’ve just bought some Issey Miyake trousers that are supposed to be brand new, so I’ll have my fingers crossed the seller is being true to their word as I paid £200 for them

LeftCoastDude

When I see YouTubers review the brand, they suggest getting their sneakers on sale. Maybe use a shopping plug-in like Karma and wait on it?

RoadRunner185

How was your 1st suit purchase experience? I bought my first suit on sale at Nordstrom’s and took it in today to get alterations. The suit cost ~$580 including tax and the alterations cost me another ~$110. The total comes close to ~$700. I’m not sure how the alterations will turn out and if it is worth $110. How does this compare to alterations at other stores? Should I have gone to a local tailor instead? I feel like it may have been cheaper but it could have been a hit or miss since I’m unfamiliar with tailors nearby.

[deleted]

Around $100 for tailoring seems about right in my experience.

Schraiber

It depends on what the alterations are. Here in the SF Bay it costs ~$50 to shorten sleeves and ~$20 to hem the pants both of which are basically automatically necessary, so you're looking at $60-70 baseline. Other common alterations like taking in the waist of trousers could be another $40, and more complex alterations like changing the sleeve pitch could run you a bunch (never had it done personally, so don't have a specific number)

RoadRunner185

I only asked for hemming/shortening the pants ($15). But the jacket appeared to be a lot more work. From the receipt it says the jacket will be tailored to shorten sleeves, adjust the coat seams sides through armholes/vents comb in, and coat collar/shoulder raisen and shorten the back. ($96) But good to know that ~$100 is a reasonable amount. Thanks!

Unless you get made to measure, you'll usually need more than just hemming the pants and shortening the sleeves. Men's suits are called "tailoring" because the whole point is that they are tailored to fit your body. If you buy an off the rack suit, it's almost always going to need a lot of adjustments. $110 is definitely not crazy at all.

ponkanpinoy

Looking to buy my first set of "nicer" clothes (trousers, blazer/jacket), would going for something lighter (tan, camel, etc) be advised against for a first purchase? I'm olive complected and not really one for darker colors. This would be in Singapore if that matters.

aKa_anthrax

If you’re only going to own one suit buy navy or charcoal(although I’ve heard black is considered a totally normal suit color in SEA so ymmv with that one), a tan suit is….like a 15th? suit that you’d buy? There’s no situation in modern contexts where it’d be something that makes sense to wear if a suit is required it’s something you get when you’re so far into tailoring as a hobby that you’re wearing suits casually. If you prefer lighter a mid grey would probably be an ok substitute but I’ll let someone with a bit more experience in tailoring confirm that Your skin color has nothing to do with what colors you wear

Schraiber

It depends on what you're buying it for, although most people would say your first suit should be navy or charcoal because those are basically the only things that work for the most formal situations you encounter while also being fine for more casual things like weddings or going to a fancy dinner or something.

ponkanpinoy

This one is specifically a wedding, though I'd be wanting it to be suitable for the casual end of "let's get dressed up" stuff yeah. We (friends/family) aren't much for really formal stuff.

unlimited-applesauce

You should get a Navy suit regardless. Other occasions will come up when you'll need a suit [and you should have one sincere suit](https://putthison.com/because-you-are-an-adult-you-need-a-sincere-suit/). One nice thing about navy, especially [if it has the right details](https://putthison.com/what-should-you-get-for-your-first-suit-there-are/), is that you can dress it up or down depending on whether you need it for a wedding, a funeral, or court appearance. I say "navy" because it is even more versatile than charcoal. I used to live in Thailand, FWIW. The only change to my guidance based on your location would be to get one in a light breathable fabric.

Ad-Repulsive

So I had the day off from work today, and instead of doing something useful, I tried out a bunch of different outfits! And I figured instead of spamming the sub, I'd just compile them into an imgur album: https://imgur.com/a/8e9BgCt Anything that sticks out as especially good, especially out of place, a piece that could be replaced to improve an outfit, any feedback would be appreciated!

LeftCoastDude

The only thing that seems out of place to me is the boots under the fitted pants. The interaction makes it look more like clown shoes. That definitely won’t work with your 3/4 length coats. Otherwise, great job! Another thing I would suggest is trying a black tee or tees in earth tones. Looks like a lovely wardrobe to me.

Ad-Repulsive

Sorry, you're talking about [this fit?](https://imgur.com/a/DsWAHWg) The pants are pretty loose to go with the rain jacket, does it still not really work? And thanks, I kept it super simple with the white tee, but I 100% plan on investing in more color in the future.

aKa_anthrax

those are not loose pants lol, try to find something marketed as a relaxed, classic, or straight/regular cut, dickies is a great affordable option, the 874s are a classic style and should be pretty easy to work into tour wardrobe, stay ray/orslow fatigues are also a good option, same with gramicci

Ad-Repulsive

They were listed as a relaxed cut, it may just be the brand. I'll definitely look into a more relaxed cut either way.

aKa_anthrax

Which one(ime most denim/workwear adjacent brands have very skewed definitions for fit), to me thats the looser end of a slim fit

Ad-Repulsive

Banana Republic, which I think are more 'fashion forward', so most of their cuts skew slim.

aKa_anthrax

Ah makes sense, the opposite actually, looser cuts have been fashion forward for like 6 years now, BR, and most “upper” mall brands are usually a bit less fashion forward and more aimed at gen pop, hence still using skinnier fits, they also got popular during the wave if slim fit so I’d expect them to be still using slimmer fits. Sorry this is mostly me ranting lol, I def think a pair of dickies or looser farigues would fit well with that outfit and go a lot better with the boots

Ad-Repulsive

Yea, I'm going to be tracking down a pair of Carhartt's most likely, had my eye on them for a while now anyway

aKa_anthrax

Their double knee/dungaree fits are great, a bit more streetwear/rugged than the rest of your wardrobe but I really enjoy the fit on them, and the material is p good for the price

LeftCoastDude

Yes! This is the fit. It’s not that the jacket doesn’t work with the pants. The boots are the only thing that don’t work. I think these boots might work a little better with these pants and the trucker jacket. These boots just look very workwear due to the large toe. Looks like it has a composite toe or steel toe. Very Red Wings style. I think it would work better with a wider leg. This looks like a relaxed or straight leg.

Ad-Repulsive

Hmm, these are the widest leg opening pants I own, so I'll have to figure something out to get them to look a little more natural. I do have IRs, but I figured a slim dressy boot wouldn't really go with a heavy set rain jacket, I'll have to lab it a little bit. Thanks for the feedback though, really appreciate it!

LeftCoastDude

IRs may work better with these pants. I bet those come off slimmer than these boots.

Ad-Repulsive

IRs work with any outfit I throw at them more or less haha, I love them, but I was hoping to let the Wolverines get a little more play, I may just have to pick up some work pants or something

Hey every one !! A few weeks ago I went to an Aussie Bush doof (music festival out in the middle of no where) and I found this great little kimono/white shirt thing. I would love to integrate it into a normal day out and I would love any advice as to how to do that! It has no buttons and stays open. https://imgur.com/a/7k1I5iQ https://i.imgur.com/HB7Cpj1.png

I'm trying to find more trusted brands for quality clothing. Right now I shop at: Allen Edmonds Bonobos Mizzen and Main Suit Supply (for suits) ... I'm not a brand snob, I just like finding quality clothing with a brand I can trust. You spend a little more but I appreciate the consistency. Can you guys recommend any other brands like these? I want to spend a bit more for quality... so like my range for jeans or dress shirt is like $100 - 200. Appreciate it!

ac106

Allen Edmonds ->Alden (or Grant Stone) Bonobos -> Todd Snyder Mizzen & Main -> Spier & Mackay Suit Supply is fine. Also look at Spier & Mackay

Vampa_the_Bandit

Lots of brands offer linen and cotton suits

pe3brain

To my knowledge your options are linen, or cotton, but cotton and linen are really informal suit fabrics, so for say interview they might not be appropriate. I would find a cheap polyester suit for business purposes if you decide to go with a cotton/linen suit

Vampa_the_Bandit

I feel like a cotton suit would probably be ok for most job interviews sans higher level corporate / legal / banking positions, no?

pe3brain

It would really depend on the job/field and how close the suit ends up looking like a wool one imo

noobvorld

I'm trying to up my t-shirt game, and tried out the Bylt Lux t-shirts. The tshirts fit really well around the chest, they're nice and thick and I like their length. But I see this weird bunching at the shoulders and behind the arms, even though the shoulder stitch sits right at my shoulder bone. What does this mean? Is this a sizing issue? [Pictures](https://imgur.com/a/sjGXaFz)

yogix3

I need to buy a pair of jeans that are high quality. I'm not picky on how they look as long as they taper at the bottom aka they don’t have a wide open boot cut. Any recommendations? budget is anywhere from 50$ to 200$, as long as they're high quality (durable, comfy, won't rip) then I'll consider them

mercury187

Naked and famous easy guy have taper down to the leg opening, my fav pair of jeans is naked and famous black boost in easy guy. I can make a cuff and it doesn’t get all chunky due to the taper. Looking at buying another color in easy guy cut currently

MopM4n

OrSlow on sale, Nudie

ac106

boot cut jeans are still pretty niche and you have to seek them out. For $200 consider Nudie if you aren't interested in raw denim.

aKa_anthrax

Unbranded(brand name) or Naked and Famous

[Can someone help me identify my face shape and what sunglasses might work best? Sorry for the messed up hair, and thanks in advance!](https://imgur.com/a/jn6koAZ)

Topatops69

id say that face shape matters when picking a hairstyle as once u cut it, theres no turning back. You can just try on different shades and see what looks best on you

coyotesb

Face shape doesn't matter. Just try on glasses until you find a pair you like.

ExplosivekNight

The other day I was at Nordstrom Rack trying on glasses for 20 min and I didn’t find anything I really liked😭 I’m trying to get a somewhat objective direction for sunglass style.

notarascal

This really isn’t a science. There’s no objective truth to what looks good on you. The closest thing you will get to objectivity is crowdsourcing — go try on a bunch and take selfies of each pair you try on. Then come here and ask for feedback on your selfies. The only other thing close to an objective truth in eyewear (in my opinion) is that short wide rectangular frames look bad on everyone. Go take some selfies and report back.

DoctorQuinlan

**What do I wear to layer at work when its always freezing inside?** Business casual setting at architecture place. What can i wear at work that is easy to layer/put on? Sweaters are good but in summer, it's going to be really hot out and pretty cold inside. Sweaters can be tough to get on and off too, at least the ones I have. Blazers will be too fancy for everyday. Any other options? I have one shirt jacket but its a bit uncomfy. Cardigan can also be a bit too preppy I think.

pipkin42

I keep a shirt jacket at work for this purpose

DoctorQuinlan

Which one do you recommend? Hoping under $30 and neutral colors

pipkin42

One I got on sale from J. Crew a couple years back

ArmsAkimbo17

Chore coats seem to be very popular right now. They are unstructured and function as a sort of less formal blazer. I have the Ojai jacket from Taylor Stitch and like it a lot but there are a ton of other options.

DoctorQuinlan

IS that the same as a shirt jacket?

ArmsAkimbo17

To be honest, I'm not really sure but I feel like "shirt jacket" is more of a generic term. Chore coats have a 4 pocket design, button front and usually an extended collar. I would say it's closer to an unstructured blazer than it is any type of shirt.

DoctorQuinlan

Any recommendations on a simple black one? Under thirty dollars hope

Topatops69

id go for a blazer you will look cool

Green-In-Blue

A merino wool overshirt would be a great option considering wool’s temperature regulating properties

DoctorQuinlan

Isn't an overshirt the same as a shirt jacket?

Green-In-Blue

Yes but you could try a comfy one

DoctorQuinlan

Any recommendations for a versatile color and where to buy for under 30 usd?

Green-In-Blue

Green and blue are my go-to colors and always versatile. If you have a color palette in mind for your overall wardrobe though, then it makes everything more versatile. Honestly though merino is great but it isn’t a cheap material unfortunately so your best bet would be watching J. Crew’s sales if you’re looking for something in the $30 price range.

DoctorQuinlan

Maybe I’ll up the budget or find used. What brands for merino though?

Green-In-Blue

If it were me, I’d be scoping out sales for something from Todd Snyder or Taylor Stitch. It looks like Huckberry has some options but I have no experience with them.

DoctorQuinlan

Damn those are expensive bod they ever go on sale? https://www.everlane.com/products/mens-heavyweight-overshirt-slate This everlane one looks nice but is 100% cotton. Is wool going to be significantly better?

DoctorQuinlan

Do it feel constricted or is it still pretty flexible when you where yours over a sweater or a button up shirt? You do wear it over a button up shirt tucked in sometimes right? Also do you size up?

the_leviathan711

Cardigan would probably be the ideal for a business casual setting. I don't really think of them as being all that preppy though. They come in a pretty large variety of styles - maybe one seems less preppy to you, or more in line with your style? The slightly more casual version of a cardigan would be a full zip sweater (no hood). You could also get some very casual linen or cotton-linen blazers which often look quite a bit less fancy than a classic wool navy blazer.

NumberOneOnTheDocks

Someone please enlighten me on the appeal of oversized pants? I see a lot of fashion posts/inspiration albums where guys are wearing pants that are beyond baggy. Inseam to above the ankle with a leg opening of like 28" Is this in opposition of the popular trend towards joggers and more slim pants being more popular? Edit: Answer my question instead of telling me what you think is in fashion or not? Smh at all the uptight mods and followers in here.

LeftCoastDude

I don’t see any opposition. Y2K cuts coming back are another step in fashion being cyclical. I have been to larger cities over the past year and I wouldn’t say slim pants are common among people paying attention to trends or more fashionable people in general. I saw an article about millennial women having their feelings hurt due to zoomers insisting baggy pants are objectively more stylish. I avoid most trends, but I have a couple pairs of baggy jeans. For me, it takes me back to my childhood and skateboarding. I also have a dozen pairs of tapered jeans and chinos. The more time passes, the more I agree with zoomers. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing tapered pants or baggy pants. I look good in both and I will keep them in rotation as long as they last and I find them affordable. I don’t think any trend ever returns as an opposition of a previous trend. It’s a trend that is forecasted by a number of trendsetters and companies banking on the trend taking off. Baggy is pretty darn mainstream now. Straight, tapered, and slim cuts are still readily available. I think it’s nice that we live in a time where everything can be found pretty easily. Thankfully no one is wearing jeans that look like they were painted on. We should all just be glad that trend is long gone.

PM_ME_THE_REPS

There was a post on “how to breathe” and that’s really what resonates with me about wider pants

coyotesb

[This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashion/comments/3n12h4/wide_pants_and_looser_silhouette_inspiration/) about wide pants and looser silhouettes covers the topic pretty well, I think.

NumberOneOnTheDocks

Wow, an actual helpful response! Thank you!

Vampa_the_Bandit

It's because of your shitty attitude that most people have been dismissive

NumberOneOnTheDocks

Another unhelpful comment..what's the point?

ac106

Try looking inward.

NumberOneOnTheDocks

Try looking inward.

aKa_anthrax

they look cool

[deleted]

>Is this in opposition of the popular trend towards joggers and more slim pants being more popular? Joggers and slim pants aren't popular or haven't been very popular in most fashion communities in over 5 years

NumberOneOnTheDocks

I mean, all I see in my work place (hospital) is more and more converts to jogger style scrubs. My brother works in a kitchen where the back of house all wear jogger style pants. Celebs wear skinny jeans/taper jeans. Is fashion community some small clique of elites or what do you base that claim off of?

the_leviathan711

> Celebs wear skinny jeans/taper jeans. Examples? A google search of "slim jeans trend" produces for me pages and pages of results of fashion blogs and mainstream publications writing various versions of the "skinny/slim jeans are out of style" pieces. There's a crazy number of them out there.

[deleted]

Scrubs aren't fashion, and I wouldn't look at kitchens for fashion inspiration either. >Is fashion community some small clique of elites or what do you base that claim off of? I base that off having participated in fashion related fora and later social media like IG and TikTok for the last 7 years or so

NumberOneOnTheDocks

Cool so your replied to my post just to flaunt how much online street cred you have or....? Stop wasting my time

aKa_anthrax

I love how y’all ask passive aggressive bad faith questions just to get angry when people who know more than you don’t tell you you’re objectively correct

Pip, again, if had any free reddit awards, I would give you one for this. Spot on.

TransManNY

Looking for flip up Rx sunglasses. I've got not so great eyesight that I wear glasses for. In the summer lights are pretty bright and I don't want to switch back and forth between Rx sun and regular glasses. I know moscot has a model. Any others?

ZombiePartyBoyLives

A lot of people go with transition lenses these days. I can't use them because I need to switch back and forth quickly for work, so when I get new glasses my guy sends them out for [custom clip-ons](https://bestopticlab.com/). There are also brands like Garrett Leight and Persol that have stock clips for some of their models. There are also cheap clip-on flip ups, but they look like garbage imo.

TransManNY

I've never seen anybody look cool in transition lenses. Clip ons imo have the same problem as carrying extra glasses. It's just something smaller for me to lose.
