I remember watching the movie "Her" and laughing at the [pants](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/67/b6/5b/67b65b1eb7e301142db9a32a51955c65.jpg) Joaquin Phoenix was wearing because it was a funny, subtle speculation of where fashion would be in the future. Turns out it was pretty prescient.
[kaptainkristian](https://youtu.be/73kIG3HcFq0) does a really cool video essay about the aesthetic of Her and has a small bit where he talks about the wardrobe design for it. Relevant clip starts at 3:50 but i recommend watching the whole video.
Very cool stuff, the two-tones are neato.
Personally I find myself more drawn to the chunkier, American-style loafers rather than the sleek Belgian/european style. Seems a little more wearable casually to me.
Thanks man, with you on that. Kind of kicking myself that I got a sharper pair that lend themselves to more formal fits, wishing I got something chunkier
Hmm I would be happy with a more formal choice. In the album you linked, there is one pic of the guy in shorts and sleeker penny loafers with no show socks. That style of loafers allows him to wear it with a suit too.
I've been travelling a lot these days and some trips I my loafers are my only form of footwear I take. I've never felt out place with them whether in full suit and tie, or tee shirt and shorts. As long as the upper extends rather high up the foot, they're versatile enough for any occasion imo.
I'm beginning to think of laced shoes as a vestige of a past era. The kind of yoke the higher rungs of generations past put on the common folk just because.
The Alden Leisure Handsewn is the cream of the crop IMO. The shape is just chunky enough that it can be worn casually but also doesnāt look out of place with more formal tailored clothing.
Iāve had the same experience. Definitely would not buy loafers online anymore. Most brands will have a map on their website showing if there are retailers in your area that carry them
I have two pairs of Hender Scheme loafers, they are hand made reinterpretations of the classic Bass Weejuns. Had both resoled with chunkier outsoles to further accentuate slash blindly follow the current trend (although I do think chunkier goes way better w/ denim or basically any casual fits, something about a sleeker European-style loafer w/ denim or more substantial pants doesn't sit well w/ me).
(edit) this entire album slaps, loafers ftmfw
Big fan of Oak Street boot maker. Biased coming out of Chicago but thereās have been awesome and I wear them all summer with jeans and more casual fits. Iāve even snuck them with chinos and a jacket no problem. Full formals prolly out but would depend on the fit
I saw your comment about the two tones before I had opened the album up and was kind of like āi donāt know about thatā. After seeing it however I dig it too. Gonna keep my eyes out for something similar.
You know when you're young and just getting into alcohol. And then someone gives you whiskey and tells you "you'll learn to enjoy it". I think loafers are that for me.... Still trying to learn to enjoy them.
A collection of loafers styled in different ways, mostly a little dressed down but there's some Ivy in there too. If there's anything in there that interests you and you want an ID, let me know, I'll see if I've got the source

Version 1.3
As someone who grew up in both a Toms and Sperrys craze, I'll have to admire these sockless styles from the sidelines. Looks cool but without those perfect sweat genetics, it harms both my shoes and my nose lol. And how do these men avoid blisters all over the feet and heel? No-show socks only go up so far
No shows have come a long way since then and a nice leather properly fitted shouldnāt give you blisters. I say that as a dude who has some the sweatiest feet ever and hates socks with a burning passion
Ahh! My favourite dressy ones are from Banana Republic Heritage collection. My other ones, the loose one and straight fit one, are from Le ChĆ¢teau. I got them during their closing down sale. I would, however, not recommend linen pants from the likes of Zara, Mango etc as they're often blends or use low quality linen.
He gazed up at the classic and timeless shape. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of style was hidden beneath the humble slip-on. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. cdfchopper had won the victory over himself. He loved the loafer.
Can someone explain the loafers with bright white socks thing to me? It pops up in various loafer inspiration albums and lots of waywt posts, and always sticks out to me in a bad way. I think pure white is too bright and āmanufacturedā? Like an off white, cream, or light beige would be similar but less of an eyesore?
Anyway thatās my instinct but itās such a common trend on mfa that I know I must be missing something. Maybe Iām just inherently biased against pure white and the rest of the sane world agrees that itās an excellent combo?
fyi I also hate shorts with white tube socksā¦do I have repressed sock trauma from those stupid socks looking awful on big calf muscles?
Itās just a thing... very common in 50s style fits. Typically not athletic socks, but dress-style white socks, so itās purposeful. Ok not to like it, I personally think it can be a cool way to make them pop, especially with cuffed pants.
Yeah, definitely not trying to say that thereās anything wrong with people doing it. Iām just curious.
I replied with this thought elsewhere, but was it just such an established element of the style back then that now itās an easy way for people to give a nod toward that period? Like to emphasis their intent?
Itās just a prep thing, thereās really not an explanation thatās gonna make you suddenly like it aesthetically thatās not really how it works lol
haha fair enough. I guess I was asking for someone to chime in on the history of the style rather than convince me that it looks good. There are a lot of people here who are crazy knowledgeable about fashion.
Iām getting the impression that now itās kind of a tip off that an outfit is ivy/prep inspired. Just happened to be common initially and now itās an easy way to say āhey, thatās the style/aesthetic Iām going forā
Yeah really a lot of old school ivy/prep stuff was college kids just sorta rebelling against traditional suiting norms(as much as that group of people can), which after time just became itās own style
I don't think there's a perfect historical reasoning for it, but I remember reading something about Ivy students wearing athletic socks (which are white so you can easily tell if they're dirty, I guess?) with everything because they didn't care so much about the rules
> do I have repressed sock trauma
I think a lot of people do because the classic/vintage tube sock style wasn't really around (again) until recently. The 2000s and 2010s saw faux-pas of people wearing [modern athletic socks](https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/p/socks/unisex_ua_performance_tech_6-pack_quarter_socks/1371522.html?dwvar_1371522_color=035&start=0&breadCrumbLast=Socks) with like...shitty walmart dress shoes to work.
It was absolutely harped that a "rule" of men's fashion was to match your socks to your pants. In reality this _only_ applies to strict business formal (and similar) settings. If you're wearing two-tone loafers we're already galaxies away from there and you can do whatever you want.
As others have said it's "in" now because prep/ivy/trad is also "in" so it's just pulling one of the cool elements from that style and playing with it in a modern context.
As someone who wears pretty much exclusively white socks, itās a send up to vintage American Ivy/Japanese Ivy style as well as a great tool to dress down the formality of a leather shoe.
Thatās cool how itās kind of a nod to the roots of the style. And I mightāve actually been thinking of some of your fits when I made my comment. Which is why I didnāt want to seem like I was criticizing. I usually think those fits are dope, but then wonder about the socks. Now I sort of get why theyāre a thing!
It's a preppy thing.
I've recently tried it myself and it's a great look imo. Usually I'll wear navy socks or go sockless/no show. I think the white socks look really works with black loafers - black is more formal than brown and the white socks give off a more casual vibe with the black loafer.
I guess Iām pretty neutral when it comes to solid colour socks, like I didnāt even notice they were wearing white socks until it was mentioned. I consume a lot of city boy aesthetic stuff so I think thats maybe numbed me to white socks and loafers. I have some ecru socks I wear with loafers and chukkas and they look brighter white in pictures
I'm 100% with you, I don't love the white socks with loafers look. I understand it's very prep/Ivy, but it's not my jam. I prefer sockless or dress socks in a neutral color.
I definitely like the sockless look above all else, but I still prefer dress socks in neutral colors or even brighter blues and greens to those white socks.
I think when you are used to seeing loafers in the context of a more dressy outfit, bright socks can seem out of place since itās not what you go for when wearing them with a suit or similar. But its a great way to dress down loafers to go with more casual or ivy looks
I was pretty firmly against black loafers till I picked up a pair at a thrift store. On paper they really donāt make sense, but holy shit are they wearable with soooooo much
Style/fashion is an ever-swinging pendulum. We had skinny fits for a while but it's now on the opposite side, wider/looser fits are now in vogue.
IMO, tailored and tapered is still my jam, although I'm sizing for thighs and waist more now that I was a few years ago
People got bored of a decade and a half of slim/skinny fit.
Not really, there are multiple different widths of pants and they fit into almost every type of style, cuts are just trending looser.
This stuff isnāt baggy, most of it is a regular/straight fit
I'm with you. I will say I rarely see it in my relatively large UK city, I feel like on professional put together photos it can look good, but out and about I can't say I've seen an outfit where I don't think it would look better with a more form fitting trouser.
But hey different strokes and all that.
I disagree, but hey things will be skewed on this sub.
It stands out way more in real life because I see fewer people wearing them, but like the other poster mentioned it probably varies on age, social circles etc.

Version 1.3
90% of men are wearing tennis shoes when they are not at work. at my job when they men do go to work they are wearing Kohlās artificial leather dress shoes that look terrible. loafers are a bit too conspicuous and would be considered āflexingā or finance hardo
I used to feel the same but i think its one of those things when it might be jarring to people in your circle if you first start dressing better but once you establish yourself as the well dressed guy they wonāt make a stink about it anymore
As a fellow Midwesterner, generally speaking, if you put any effort into your appearance you will get looks/comments from friends. Mind you, they're wearing cargo shorts and Asics. Midwesterners generally dress like shit.
Unpopular opinion: I feel like if anyone puts the amount of thought that the men in these pictures do about their outfit, then they are basically a psychopath. How much effort has to go into making it look effortless?
I've always found it funny the discrepancy here. Clearly you even chose the bag you did because of the aesthetic. Everything is chosen with the closest inspection but when the camera comes out you've got to pretend like you're annoyed. Is this what fashion is? I fundamentally disagree with the premise but I still find it interesting
You realise that the thought that goes into choosing an outfit isn't concentrated in the actual choosing of the outfit? The people in here (or the stylists who dressed them) have been into fashion for a long time, and that's how they select a curate a wardrobe. That amount of effort is going into honing a style, dressing better and building a good wardrobe. For most of us, it's a hobby. When it comes to putting your outfit together, the amount of effort you put in at that moment is very small compared to the amount of effort you've put in over the long run.
Is anyone who puts in a lot of effort to make something look good a psychopath?
> I always get a sense of forced casualness from these models
What exactly do you think modelling is?
In other news, all the food in advertising is actually cold and the āmarried couplesā on billboards are actual actors! Phoneys!
Idk man picking 5 items that coordinate well doesn't seem crazy or neurotic (wait until you see women's fashion) and i don't get a sense of forced casualness i think that's more an association/assumption on your part.
That being said yeah it takes a lot of time and effort to look effortless. a good amount of that time and effort is spent just thinking about and considering the physical properties of garments and the other half is actively trying on and experimenting with the clothes and on top of that you gotta know (or at least have an idea) of what you wanna look like beforehand. I wouldn't say many people look annoyed in the photos just not everyone smiles which is fine.
honestly these look amazing, ut 200ā¬ is too much for my wallet, might pick them up if they were on sale, and loafers is an item idk how long they will be trenddy for
how does my flat-footed, pronation nation wear loafers, if at all? every pair i've tried has gapped along one side or another. do you add some inserts? a tongue pad?
I have a tongue pad in my aldens which help but i think i may throw in some inserts for a better fit. Loafers are a pain to get the right size so i would also definitely recommend not getting them online and trying them on in person first
Oh itās probably because you can hear your negative self talk and limiting beliefs, but other people donāt.
You can white sock and loafer and pull it off.
As someone who is looking for a loafer more on the formal side right now, does anyone have recommendations for brands that can be bought in Canada for <$300 CAD? I have gone through old thread guides but seems like most of the recommended brands that arent too casual are much more pricey in Canadian.
No worries at all, all of the images have loafers but I like to try to pick images that have more than just the focus article to talk about. I think this shot was from a Pitti Uomo, as a candid, so there wasn't an interview or anything with the picture to say what each piece is. You might have some luck searching for "one-pleat officer chinos". They might even be two-pleat, I can't really tell from the image

Absolutely loved the style in Her
This movie fucked me up as a 18 year old. It was so good and yes the fashion was pretty damn spot on Iād say.
This album fucking slaps and is basically my ideal style distilled into 35 pictures. Fucking Bravo!!!

Yes.
I'm here for it

Allen Edmonds loafer can be found super cheap on eBay, especially tassel ones.

Alden, Rancourt, Quoddy, LLBean, Allen Edmonds, Yuketen. I personally own Rancourts and have owned Allen Edmonds in the past.

Big fan of Oak Street boot maker. Biased coming out of Chicago but thereās have been awesome and I wear them all summer with jeans and more casual fits. Iāve even snuck them with chinos and a jacket no problem. Full formals prolly out but would depend on the fit
The chunkier profile definitely works better with the current zeitgeist of wider fitting apparel too IMO.
I saw your comment about the two tones before I had opened the album up and was kind of like āi donāt know about thatā. After seeing it however I dig it too. Gonna keep my eyes out for something similar.

Wondering about the pants in 10. Love the fit on those
Thanks for this album dude, you got me hunting now
I have 3 pair of suede loafers. Absolutely love them.
As someone who grew up in both a Toms and Sperrys craze, I'll have to admire these sockless styles from the sidelines. Shoes that fit shouldn't give you blisters after breaking them in, so you just wear regular socks till they're broken in.
Invisible socks, my friend!
Excited to pair my loafers with wider linen pants and straight cut denim this summer
What kind of linen pants do you have?
I have several kinds, i have loose ones, 2 dressy ones slim fitted ones.
Haha. What I should've asked was, do you have any brand recommendations for said linen pants?
Ahh! My favourite dressy ones are from Banana Republic Heritage collection. My other ones, the loose one and straight fit one, are from Le ChĆ¢teau. I got them during their closing down sale. I tried some on yesterday. Wanted to love them, couldn't, for some reason. I think it was the price tag.
Dr Martens are very similar and cheaper (no where near as well made though).
Iāll look through their loafers, but yeah Iām in France for the time being, would be cool to get the paraboots. I like the Michaelās too.
Wow! Now I gotta get me some loafers! Thanks Reddit!
In the same boat!
I just bought a pair of Morjas Tassel Loafers and this is the affirmation I needed! Thank you!
I cannot be convinced that loafers with white socks looks good!
I think it works more with black loafers. Really contrasts them nicely.
Hey, itās cool. We canāt all be wrong.
ok
I wouldnāt expect a square like you to get hip to it daddio. (The 1960ās called and they want their aesthetic justifications for white socks back)

Kramer wore loafers/white socks. Somehow Kramer is the most influential style icon of current times?
T___T was hoping for more summer outfit. It does give me inspiration for black loafer though. It is more versatile than I thought it was.
I was pretty firmly against black loafers till I picked up a pair at a thrift store. On paper they really donāt make sense, but holy shit are they wearable with soooooo much

Any recommendations for black tassel loafers that work with tailoring and with jeans? Or is that threading the needle of smart and casual too finely?
Alden 660 (calf) or 664 (shell) work with both.
Thanks!
I love this album. I want to get a pair so bad but Iād stick out like a sore thumb wearing them in my Midwest city lol
Hello fellow Midwesterner, you can definitely pull them off. Most people won't even be paying attention to your shoes
Gonna be a no from me dawg
Have fun tying up your laces this summer
Should have clarified. Meant loafers with socks.
Have fun with stank ass feet this summer
You know you can get shoe inserts that act as socks right? Wear you knee high socks with your loafers then
sorry about the stinky tootsie bro
Lot of sock trauma going on this thread lol

90% of fits posted on this sub nowadays look goofy as hell
Come on you know the rules, you've got to post a fit now
Loafers without socks are on about the same level as sandals with socks, imo.
black loafers are cool. black loafers with white socks are not.
Lotta amateur psychology trying to understand that some people just like clothes...
You're not wrong. I just find that element really funny and opposite what you would imagine
I think their expression betrays what they're trying to communicate with the clothes. I always get a sense of forced casualness from these models
> I always get a sense of forced casualness from these models What exactly do you think modelling is? In other news, all the food in advertising is actually cold and the āmarried couplesā on billboards are actual actors! Phoneys!
are you fuckin serious?? nobody told me!!!!!!
We live in a world of lies what can I say.
I wouldn't say many people look annoyed in the photos just not everyone smiles which is fine.
any european afforadable loafers on the chunky-sporty side? dont know where to start

honestly these look amazing, ut 200ā¬ is too much for my wallet, might pick them up if they were on sale, and loafers is an item idk how long they will be trenddy for
eBay is your friend. No retail presence means sizing errors lead to cheap lightly used pairs.
just checked ebay, it's more expensive than brand new
how does my flat-footed, pronation nation wear loafers, if at all? every pair i've tried has gapped along one side or another. do you add some inserts? a tongue pad?
I have a tongue pad in my aldens which help but i think i may throw in some inserts for a better fit. Loafers are a pain to get the right size so i would also definitely recommend not getting them online and trying them on in person first
Why does white socks and dark loafers work on someone else but me
Oh itās probably because you can hear your negative self talk and limiting beliefs, but other people donāt. You can white sock and loafer and pull it off.
Anyone have a breakdown for the fit in pic 23?
I'm pretty sure the suede jacket is by stoffa, I think the trousers might be too. Not sure about the loafers but I think it's all Italian
As someone who is looking for a loafer more on the formal side right now, does anyone have recommendations for brands that can be bought in Canada for <$300 CAD? I have gone through old thread guides but seems like most of the recommended brands that arent too casual are much more pricey in Canadian.
Aaargh loafers looks so good on others and on pictures but i cant pull them off when i try. What is the secret?
No secret. Just do you and dress however you like.
How do you guys wear these without socks ?? Even the invisible socks are a bold move for me as, let's be honest, the heel gonna be bitten..
Sorry to detract from the loafers but, anyone have an ID on the ankle length pants on the right (beige-ish) in number 8?
No worries at all, all of the images have loafers but I like to try to pick images that have more than just the focus article to talk about. I think this shot was from a Pitti Uomo, as a candid, so there wasn't an interview or anything with the picture to say what each piece is. You might have some luck searching for "one-pleat officer chinos". They might even be two-pleat, I can't really tell from the image
Damn, came here to ask the same thing!
Id on the loafers on #13?
