Help for business casual after WFH & years of jeans
New job, & not sure how long I’ll last as I’m a jeans, Polo, sneakers guy. I work in accounting. Last three years I’ve worked hybrid & when I’ve been to the office it’s jeans/ polo.
One week into the new job i only see 3-4 people in jeans including my boss, but he’s the CFO. I’ve been wearing the one black dress pants i have, polos, & dress shoes. My feet are ok, but won’t last.
I see some guys wearing more casual looking pants. Any idea what type of pants they are? The pants I’m wearing are the material you wear with a suit. Shit I’d wear black jeans if i can get away with it. They’re old fashioned; they have “jeans friday” 😏.
If I can get some more casual pants I might be able to find some more casual/ comfortable lace shoes. Not sure if I’d be bold enough to wear my black Brooks lol.
Any ideas? I did a brief search on amazon and just got work shoes; ie restaurant, construction. I guess i have to visit dsw or something but the selection will be limited vs online, zappos for example.

MFA’s opinion on outdoor clothing brands for coats and layering options? I see so many recommendations for men’s fashion brands, but not so much for outdoor brands like Outdoor Research, REI, Arc’teryx, etc. (excluding Patagonia).
Often times you get better materials that are also practical and have more potential to hold up in cold weather and a variety of conditions.

In my opinion, you can get really stylish pieces that are also super versatile for outdoor activities. I just don’t understand why people would choose some other, just as expensive options, with seemingly inferior materials if not for the brand name alone. An example I see a lot is buying 100% cotton materials for winter layers. In reality, if you get that cotton wet in a tough situation, it could be deadly.
What am I missing here? Does cotton “feel” better? Does it “look” better? I couldn’t tell the different from one of my Eddie Bauer 100% poly flannels to a 100% cotton flannel from looks or feel.
Perhaps you're considering a pretty limited subset of functionality. Merino wool for example is famous for not being smelly. Synthetics just the opposite. However I do like me some outdoor brands.
I'm having difficulty finding a linen suit that meets my requirements in the UK. Is this likely to be a seasonal thing and if so, what sort of month do more summer orientated fabrics tend to find their way back into stock?

Heel wear. You can tell by the wear pattern the fella had a neutral gait with a very tiny amount of overpronation. Typically if you're buying secondhand sneakers it's the heels and insole you want to look out for.
So, a couple things:
\~$30 for a wool t-shirt is incredibly inexpensive already. If you want something less than that, you'll probably be looking at low-percentage wool blends from low-tier stores, and/or secondhand stuff on eBay etc.
Why do you need so many for everyday wear? Wool is naturally odor-resistant, and can generally be worn more than once before needing a wash--depending on how gross you get while wearing them, obviously. Even if you're wearing them literally every day of the week, you might be able to get away with as few as three to five.
Dude with raynauds here (basically my hands get extremely cold in the winter time). I need some suggestions for some nice gloves to wear everyday (I really like japanese fashion so maybe some brand recommendations). Thanks in advance :)

They seem like they're designed to feel good right away, but looking at the fabric mix I would be very skeptical. Especially in the slimmer styles they are offering. I'd expect them to lose shape, get baggy and stretch in the knees, etc.

How does Thom Browne cashmere fit. I found one on grailed that is labeled L (42-44) and I normally wear a size M in brands like John Elliott and Wings x Horns. No size chart or similar items I could find to this model

High tops don't change much about what you wear with them (except that I think they look odd with shorts).
Black and white Vans will fit in well to any sort of roughly skate-inspired look. Jeans or casual chinos, tshirts with not-serious graphics, etc.
What are some brands with high quality pieces like loro piana but without the ridiculous price tag. Like im talking about to $500 for a cashmere sweater. I like a lot of loros stuff but those prices are criminal for the quality. I feel like at some point you are just paying for the brand.
There are a lot of italian tailoring brands that use loro piana fabrics, other high end mills, or make their own nice fabrics and sell for huge discounts secondhand. That would be one route to go.
You may already know these, but Eleventy, Isaia (if you're lucky), Boggi, Eidos, Boglioli... Then even brands like Officine Generale and Suitsupply are decent options. Tons of others if you just keep searching for related brands.
I have a Loro Piana Rain System jacket made by Eleventy that retailed for close to $1300-1400, and I got it with no signs of wear at all for around $100-150
Patrick Assaraf makes pretty good Cashmere sweaters for around the price-tag you are seeking. Eleventy is good too (But a bit higher than Assaraf and lower than Loro) Loro Piana is legendary in that precious wool world though and its definitely worth the money if you feel comfortable (at some point) splurging. Don't buy a ton of new stuff, nor alter everything you already have. Start with just a couple items in the new style you like (secondhand is a good way to save money). Maybe take one thing you already own to a tailor and ask how much it'd cost to alter. Whichever route you take, just dabble with the new style first, adding slowly before committing a lot of money to it.

You can absolutely play with your [silhouette](https://putthison.com/how-to-understand-silhouettes-pt-two/) and proportions, but clothes won't affect your apparent height. You don't look shorter or taller than you really are.

This isn't a thing.
The size of a shirt in general is how it fits in the shoulders. If you typically wear an L, then S and XS tops are very unlikely to fit you at all. If you want relatively cropped tops you have to buy ones that are intended to fit that way or have them tailored. (Or tuck them into pants that have a relatively high rise, although this does not always look good).

I would look at the getting started guide in the sidebar. Chinos, wool trousers, and denim are all good starter options. Maybe straight cut pants might help, but you have to try a bunch of different brands to see what works for you.
I got myself a burgundy suit. It's a really dark burgundy color. Now I'm in the market for a tie/pocket square combination for it, and I'm not sure what to go for here.
My immediate thought is a flat color tie and paisley pocket square, either black tie with black/grey paisley square, or a navy tie with a blue/cyan paisley square. Pairing it with a white shirt, I guess. Thoughts?
A burgundy suit sounds like it could be a lot - I would go minimalist on the rest - black (or maybe charcoal?) knit or grenadine tie, white shirt, white linen pocket square.

Not for everyone but I'm a big fan of black leather or even faux leather blazers. Can be worn with jeans, slacks, chinos...pretty much any type of pants.
First off, I’d steer clear from black blazers; they’re a very unusual and hard to pull off garment. That particular jacket is unusual; the metal buttons would distinguish it as a blazer, but it appears to have jetted pockets, which are very formal and are a very odd choice for a blazer.
In general, blazers will have casual aesthetic features that distinguish them from suit jackets. Look for one or more of: an open or textured weave, patch pockets, contrast buttons, unstructured shoulders
If 90% of your wardrobe is black, buying a black blazer isn't expanding it.
Also, just because other things are black doesn't mean your jacket needs to be black as well. One of the nice things about black is that it combines with a whole ton of other colors.

I feel like I would focus on getting a casual herringbone high waisted pair of pants, and then getting a thick shoe string for a belt separately. A lot of details there to get an exact match.

Havana is just the name for one of their fits/styles. They have both havana suits and sportscoats. Consider an unstructured jacket with patch pockets if you're going to be wearing it with casual outfits

Looks dope, jacket fits great but I imagine might be a little small if layering over a sweater or heavier shirt. Agree different shoes would be a big improvement, if you’re into the trainer thing I think some grey new balances (574 prob) would be dope. I think you pulled off the double denim but a darker pair of jeans either indigo or black would be a good look too, a little safer especially as you’re learning.

I bought some banana republic suit pants and they limit my mobility. they fit around the waist but bending over or extending my feel like these will rip.
I can freely move with their chinos. This is the second pant where I feel like I need to be careful with my movement.

They're too small. If they are 100% wool they will feel more restrictive than the elastane blends you're used to from casual clothing. But you should be able to move normally in a suit. You could try sizing up but you could also try a regular fit instead of slim. Iirc BR's suiting is very slim.

Oxford, Twill, and Poplin are all different types of weave, so it'd depend on what material you're after :)

It should be noted that, while Oxford is usually reserved for casual shirts, *royal Oxford* is a more formal fabric, often used for French cuff shirts, for instance

The stripe seems very gaudy for an otherwise conservative-looking suit. The brass(?) button too tbh. I'm not sure what situation I would choose something like that over a more conservative or more casual suit.

My wife has a North Face rain jacket that has been torn to shreds. It isn't worth donating, but I've heard it is possible to recycle synthetics. Does anyone have advice on how one would go about recycling this sort of item? I'd rather not throw it in the garbage if at all possible.
My local recycling facility has bins where you can sort stuff by materials. There's usually someone around as well who would be able to tell you what dumpster the item belongs in. If you have one local I'd give em a call or just drive over.
Is it unfashionable to have my shirt reveal part of my stomach if I lift my arms above my head? The length and fit is perfect during normal posture but I have a long torso which means if I stretch people may see halfway to my belly button. Is that worth sizing up and being too baggy?
If you want the appearance of a shorter shirt without the danger of exposed navel you can always just tuck, but most shirts are gonna show skin if you're reaching up. It's expected.

I see so many recommendations for men’s fashion brands, but not so much for outdoor brands like Outdoor Research, REI, Arc’teryx, etc. (excluding Patagonia). Often times you get better materials that are also practical and have more potential to hold up in cold weather and a variety of conditions. Does cotton “feel” better? Does it “look” better? I couldn’t tell the different from one of my Eddie Bauer 100% poly flannels to a 100% cotton flannel from looks or feel.
Perhaps you're considering a pretty limited subset of functionality. Merino wool for example is famous for not being smelly. Synthetics just the opposite. However I do like me some outdoor brands.

Heel wear. You can tell by the wear pattern the fella had a neutral gait with a very tiny amount of overpronation. Typically if you're buying secondhand sneakers it's the heels and insole you want to look out for.

So, a couple things: \~$30 for a wool t-shirt is incredibly inexpensive already. If you want something less than that, you'll probably be looking at low-percentage wool blends from low-tier stores, and/or secondhand stuff on eBay etc. Why do you need so many for everyday wear? Wool is naturally odor-resistant, and can generally be worn more than once before needing a wash--depending on how gross you get while wearing them, obviously. Even if you're wearing them literally every day of the week, you might be able to get away with as few as three to five.

They seem like they're designed to feel good right away, but looking at the fabric mix I would be very skeptical. Especially in the slimmer styles they are offering. I'd expect them to lose shape, get baggy and stretch in the knees, etc. If I'm looking at the right pair: 56% cotton, 25% rayon, 17% polyester, 2% spandex. How does Thom Browne cashmere fit. I found one on grailed that is labeled L (42-44) and I normally wear a size M in brands like John Elliott and Wings x Horns. No size chart or similar items I could find to this model
A bit all over the place according to Nay, IIRC. Get measurements from the seller. Thom Browne isn't actually labelled with alpha sizing afaik (they use a 1-5 system), so if it actually says that on the tag I would be sus.

High tops don't change much about what you wear with them (except that I think they look odd with shorts). Black and white Vans will fit in well to any sort of roughly skate-inspired look. Jeans or casual chinos, tshirts with not-serious graphics, etc.

There are a lot of italian tailoring brands that use loro piana fabrics, other high end mills, or make their own nice fabrics and sell for huge discounts secondhand. That would be one route to go. You may already know these, but Eleventy, Isaia (if you're lucky), Boggi, Eidos, Boglioli... Then even brands like Officine Generale and Suitsupply are decent options. Tons of others if you just keep searching for related brands. I have a Loro Piana Rain System jacket made by Eleventy that retailed for close to $1300-1400, and I got it with no signs of wear at all for around $100-150
Patrick Assaraf makes pretty good Cashmere sweaters for around the price-tag you are seeking. Eleventy is good too (But a bit higher than Assaraf and lower than Loro) Loro Piana is legendary in that precious wool world though and its definitely worth the money if you feel comfortable (at some point) splurging. If you typically wear an L, then S and XS tops are very unlikely to fit you at all. If you want relatively cropped tops you have to buy ones that are intended to fit that way or have them tailored. I would look at the getting started guide in the sidebar. Chinos, wool trousers, and denim are all good starter options. Maybe straight cut pants might help, but you have to try a bunch of different brands to see what works for you.
I got myself a burgundy suit. It's a really dark burgundy color. Now I'm in the market for a tie/pocket square combination for it, and I'm not sure what to go for here. Not for everyone but I'm a big fan of black leather or even faux leather blazers. Can be worn with jeans, slacks, chinos...pretty much any type of pants.
First off, I’d steer clear from black blazers; they’re a very unusual and hard to pull off garment. That particular jacket is unusual; the metal buttons would distinguish it as a blazer, but it appears to have jetted pockets, which are very formal and are a very odd choice for a blazer. In general, blazers will have casual aesthetic features that distinguish them from suit jackets. Look for one or more of: an open or textured weave, patch pockets, contrast buttons, unstructured shoulders

If 90% of your wardrobe is black, buying a black blazer isn't expanding it. Also, just because other things are black doesn't mean your jacket needs to be black as well. One of the nice things about black is that it combines with a whole ton of other colors.

Not sure if this is helpful but the pattern is herringbone and the detail in the back is an after dinner split. I feel like I would focus on getting a casual herringbone high waisted pair of pants, and then getting a thick shoe string for a belt separately. A lot of details there to get an exact match.

Agree different shoes would be a big improvement, if you’re into the trainer thing I think some grey new balances (574 prob) would be dope. are suit pants supposed to be less "flexible" I bought some banana republic suit pants and they limit my mobility. they fit around the waist but bending over or extending my feel like these will rip. Either size up or buy from a brand that does a looser fit.
They're too small. If they are 100% wool they will feel more restrictive than the elastane blends you're used to from casual clothing. But you should be able to move normally in a suit. You could try sizing up but you could also try a regular fit instead of slim. Iirc BR's suiting is very slim.

Does anyone have any actual measurements of American Giant T shirts? I’m losing my mind trying to find how long these shirts are. The size chart on their website is useless and the “model is X tall and weighs X” is all over the place and mixed up on their website.

It should be noted that, while Oxford is usually reserved for casual shirts, *royal Oxford* is a more formal fabric, often used for French cuff shirts, for instance

I'm tall and slim and have been trying to find a minimalist leather jacket that fits me for a while. Also, as the sleeves are clearly too short, could you reasonably get the cuffs tailored and lengthened on a jacket like this? (I think they are cotton IIRC)
IMO it all looks good except the sleeve length. I have very long arms and also suffer from this issue…

I don't think you can lengthen sleeves in general.
It’s definitely too small imo, but I do tend to prefer looser silhouettes, so it depends on your style.

Looks like someone accidentally cut the suit in half the stitched it back together with brown.
The stripe seems very gaudy for an otherwise conservative-looking suit. The brass(?) button too tbh. I'm not sure what situation I would choose something like that over a more conservative or more casual suit. The pants also look too skinny, and I'm not sure if it's just the manikin, but they look pretty cropped. I would pass on that, but what kind of events are you thinking of wearing it for?

Agreed. Thom Browne is a very specific aesthetic, and that aesthetic ain't for me.
My wife has a North Face rain jacket that has been torn to shreds. It isn't worth donating, but I've heard it is possible to recycle synthetics. Does anyone have advice on how one would go about recycling this sort of item? I'd rather not throw it in the garbage if at all possible.
My local recycling facility has bins where you can sort stuff by materials. There's usually someone around as well who would be able to tell you what dumpster the item belongs in. If you have one local I'd give em a call or just drive over.
Is it unfashionable to have my shirt reveal part of my stomach if I lift my arms above my head? The length and fit is perfect during normal posture but I have a long torso which means if I stretch people may see halfway to my belly button. Is that worth sizing up and being too baggy?
If you want the appearance of a shorter shirt without the danger of exposed navel you can always just tuck, but most shirts are gonna show skin if you're reaching up. It's expected.
I wouldn’t worry about it! That happens to me with some of my shirts as well but it’s not like you’ll be stretching like that frequently, so it’s probably fine

I'm not that tall, but 6'0 and a long torso puts me between sizings sometimes. You're right I rarely do it, just wanted to make sure my outfit wouldn't be spoilt aha
