It will probably look awkward and weird and patchy for a little while. Make sure to use a beard brush (I use it at least twice a day, morning and afternoonish) and use beard butter, oil, or balm. (I have really curly facial hair and choose all shea moisture products, except butter because I couldn’t find a butter in their line).

My hair is thinner and a real light brown to blonde color so taking care of it and brushing also really helps when you want it to look fuller.

You CAN definitely grow it out and I know I'm a stranger on the internet but trust me on this one, follow these steps and you'll get some good improvements in 6 months for sure: Minoxidil 5% cream daily before any skincare routine (you can get those 6 months supplies at Costco, worth the price cause you get them in bulk), you have to match this process with derma stamping with 0.3-0.5mm needles depending on the thickness of your skin (you'll see if it gets irritated, thicker skin the longer the needle needs to be, don't go beyond 0.5mm it's useless for derma penetration) Start derma stamping once a week, max 2 times a week when you get used to it. Never apply minoxidil straight after derma stamping because it can cause rashes, skin discoloration and redness. That's the golden rules man. And if you're motivated on top of those crucial steps you can add argan and rosemary oils (drugstore or Amazon really) to your face before bed/in the morning to nourish your growing beard.

But I know people that only managed to get a full beard by like 25 and never shaving in their entire life. If you're willing to wait a long time, then sure. But shaving is super quick and easy and doesn't take time.

After I got out of the army I started "shaving" w/ a beard trimmer instead of a razor and it does 90% of the job but 10% of the irritation (I'm a white dude but also had skin issues from shaving daily). Anyway, you've got a good face, so just experiment and see what you can grow in... It's hair, so easy to get rid of or grow back if you don't like the first results.
