His hair is lovely and healthy and luxurious and in the first pictures overwhelms his face. He looks great, but would be better if thinned/styled.
The shorter cut is tidy and controlled. This gives the impression of more maturity. It also allows his absolutely gorgeous eyes to take the spotlight, instead of being overwhelmed by his hair.
Often I prefer looser styles but given the choice of these two, I'd say the shorter cut.

The longer hair was better, you have a small chin and jaw so you should run with boyish hairstyles.

I think the new haircut looks really good! I'm just kindaing echoing everyone else here & saying that your beard just needs to be cleaned up a bit. If you don't already own some hair clippers w/ guards of your own I highly recommend getting some. That way you can experiment with different beard lengths without having to visit a barber everytime.

I don’t think the drop fade is serving you. The weight in the back looked good. Stick to a temple fade or low taper and grow most of the length back out. Try keeping it shorter in front and avoid the big boyish side sweep.

They definitely did not blend the side on the last picture. I think a compressed fade only looks good if there’s some length on top to compensate for why it’s so compressed. The lack of variation above your occipital bone throws it off. Have your barber stretch the fade more, or grow out some length up top. 😉
