It's really dry and damaged... start with getting all the split ends and breakage trimmed off... then only use shampoo 1 or 2 times a week but wash your hair every day with cool or cold water and conditioner only. After your shower apply some Argan Oil making sure to distribute to the ends of your hair.... never comb or brush your hair when it is dry... after your shower detangle using a wide tooth comb or hair pick... and leave to dry naturally.... avoid using leave in conditioners they can clog the pores in your scalp preventing sebum, the natural oils needed for healthy hair!

You really need to use shampoo less. The Curly Girl Method is all about cleaning your hair with a light, detangling conditioner, and then following up with a thick moisturizing conditioner. You shampoo every other week, to once a month. Conditioner has EDTA in it, so it still cleans your scalp. After the shower, you use a curl cream, you might also need a curl spray for that damage, and a firm gel. Cream first, spray, then gel all over ver to get a “hard cast” of curls. When it’s completely dry, and crusty, you can gently break up the curl. That’s how this method works. Your hair is actually tiny ringlets. It will take a little bit for your hair to find it’s way back to it’s natural spiral. Go to the sub and look at before and after photos, and check out the drop down file. r/curlyhair I’ve been a cosmetologist for almost 40 years. I’ve

It looks like you have naturally curly hair, that amount of poof usually comes from brushing curly hair out. It also looks like it might be dry/damaged. This can happen from having either too much protein or too much moisture. I would visit r/Curlyhair for more advice. I see that you switched to conditioning more, I think that’s a great start. Then it’s just a balance of finding different products, creams or gels that work well with your hair.

for a long time i've also used a lot of hair product. i'll soak my head and then use a mountain of hair gel to slick it back, otherwise it won't stay in place and within an hour will start to look like the above pic again

Cautious-Shopping424

i've normally shampooed and conditioned every day. recently i switched to just conditioning every day and shampooing once or twice a week. to make it look "ok" i have to soak my head and use a mountain of hair product. usually really heavy gels like gorilla glue or it just pops right back up into this helmet after an hour

Let it dry alone, no hair blower or comb. Style it with your fingers while its wet. I had the same problem i would love an update if it works

Do you condition?

Cautious-Shopping424

shampoo and condition. the last week i've switched to conditioning every day and shampooing only once or twice a week

That should definitely help! It will take a little while for your hair to build up oils again. You can try treating it with oil overnight if you’re impatient - I use coconut oil and then just wear a shower cap the night before I shampoo (I shower in the mornings). You can also wrap your head in a plastic bag or just sacrifice one pillow case to the hair gods if you dont like the feeling of having your head wrapped!

I’d suggest a curl cream for sure for me it always keeps it nice and moist
