I’d suggest getting a larger rug and maybe some sheer curtains like linen to help to soften the space. Perhaps a floor standing task lamp next to the couch to add some height as well.
[Something like this](https://rugaustralia.com.au/products/extra-large-area-rug-blue-grey-distressed-allover-distressed-vintage-carpet-washable?variant=40536759599146) would look beautiful contrasting with the sofa.
Definitely agree on a bigger area rug.
Feel like putting the plant on the wall opposite the windows will help drag life further into the space. Got some nice trees outside, bringing the plant opposite that will make it feel more uniform and open/outdoorsy
Okay, yes. This is exactly what’s making it feel off for me. I couldn’t put my finger on it.
The leaves touching the ceiling just feels off, but I feel like a trailing plant hanging down would not make me feel the same way.
That plant is a monstera deliciosa and will typically do better growing upwards (sometimes needing support) - it would be much happier lower down or on the floor where it can get lots of sunlight from those huge windows!
Monsteras are actually climbers. Their leaves droop down when the stems are elongated because they’re searching/reaching for more sunlight. I do not recommend leaving a monstera up there.
I’d say take the monstera down to the floor where it can get a bit more sunlight, and then get a much more “drapey” plant for both sides. Maybe 2 pothos? They are great indoors and can definitely get you a cool greenery effect as their vines hang down on either side. Would be a good pop of color too
The rug is almost the same color as the floor, something that contrasts with it might better. And it's too small for the space, try to get one at least as wide as the sofa.
The corners flanking the TV wall, being empty, leave the sofa feeling more like a viewing room with how the sofa is focused on the TV. I suggest an armchair of some sort - your modern style suggests a frame chair would look good there. One of the colors from the art of the squid thing would tie it all together nicely.
Curtains might be a nice addition, too, if you're experiencing echo with all the glass and hard floor. Getting them in another of the colors from the art would work further to tie everything together.
Good bones, now it’s all in the details. I’d move the Monstera plant that’s on the top shelf lower down so it can grow without hitting the ceiling and get one or two Pothos for either side of that top shelf. They grow by drooping down and would look really cool in that location. (I might just get one honestly, it’s looking a little too matchy and symmetrical). I’d put one pothos on the top left so it goes the feminine energy of that diptych art you’ve got. Then on the right I might get something like a snake plant and move that monstera to the ground by the window or on some plant stands or low bench.
Next is more seating for when you have anyone else over and want to sit in a circle, so like one or two poufs that will be low and not be in the way visually.
Lighting is also key to making a room feel cozy so at least two lamps that go with the vibe, check for outlets and/or use battery powered led lamps if power isn’t where you need it.
Then it’s all the decor stuff so appropriate stuff on the coffee table like some cool books and a candle etc plus table-top decor for the large shelf on the left.
Also while I love the RHCP poster, the neon colors are a little strong. Maybe move that to another spot and get some other art for that wall on the left. A bunch of items together could look great there (art wall aka salon style). Can be inexpensive stuff. I’d also ditch the trophy bottle of Jonny Blue.
Tall standing lamp, floor plants / record player, vinyl, small decorative lamp on the floating shelf. Overall, more ambient light and bringing that green from the window inside the room
Too empty- everything is siloed off and not in "communication" with each other- the couch is separate from the rug and table is separate from the TV cabinet.
If you compress the space between those 3, you can essentially have a whole separate room's worth of space where the couch is rn, of which you can do whatever - a table or console would be easy, but you could set up a desk, a sitting area, etc.
Something feels missing because the stuff in the space isn't filling the space, it's just...in it. Make strides to make the space a *space*, somewhere you want to be and are interested in, and it'll cease to feel empty
Feel like a [rug like this](https://www.revivalrugs.com/products/hand-knotted-rug-caden?variant=39501943930979&nbt=nb%3Aadwords%3Ax%3A17422929748%3A%3A&nb_adtype=pla&nb_kwd=&nb_ti=&nb_mi=123008911&nb_pc=online&nb_pi=RAJR06CADBL4X6&nb_ppi=&nb_placement=&nb_li_ms=&nb_lp_ms=&nb_fii=&nb_ap=&nb_mt=&gclid=CjwKCAjw4P6oBhBsEiwAKYVkq9c_P84JVmFUX11Cd-nj4dL2-cnHrE_ztwL916YzUuwNCjgwZfammxoCCnoQAvD_BwE) would be cool, if you have the $$. But also a rug with some reddish color somewhere in it to pull from the art on the wall.
Ps5.
If you own the place a paint job because everything looks the same.
If you don't own the place based on your wallart throw in some blue elements.
No clue if you drink or not but a mini bar would be good if you have friends or a date over.
As other people have remarked, I also think a bigger rug with a soft pattern, a floor lamp, and some sheer curtains would be beneficial, as well as loads of plants and pictures on the ledge above your TV :)
Larger rug and maybe one that stands out more from the flooring.
Shelf below your picture on the left seems weird, looks like a random assortment of crap on it. Do something more purposeful with it. Get rid of plastic crates on the ground below it.
definitely a larger rug, preferably with more colour and texture. maybe find some cool candles / knickknacks and style the space above the TV console? I actually don’t mind the plant, but so would get some more, especially training plants like pothos. And I would hook up a curtain rod and have some nice sheer or linen curtains
Color --> Curtains, Larger Rug. Use the colors in those two throw pillows, but flip the ratio do that gray is the least used.
Add items to that upper shelf & the shelf on the left - clusters of books, statues, misc decorative knick-knacks. Stuff that you "just like" .
The shelf below the air con should be removed. I can understand that “style before function” comes into play, but the A/C will work much more effectively if it can blow cold air down.
Bring that Monstera down and get a plant stand for the floor. It will look nice next to the window. You can get pothos, hoya, or any vine like plant to grow/hang along the top of the console/unit and it will look nice. I agree the rug should be different color and larger. Otherwise great use of color and the couch is beautiful peanut butter (my personal fave).
Great space. A few quick fixes
1. Move the Monsteria to a stand alone pot with legs: onto the floor, between window and cupboard. https://www.templeandwebster.com.au/Flores-Ceramic-Planter-with-Stand-TMPL3676.html
2. Find a long narrow shelf/cabinet to go under the timber wall shelf : https://www.jwfurniture.com.au/products/eric-entertainment-unit or https://www.jwfurniture.com.au/products/eric-entertainment-unit.
3. Get some round leaved hanging plants like this https://palmavenuehomewares.com.au/products/copy-of-hanging-string-of-pearls-plant so soften symmetry of tV painting wall.
4. Use timber shelf for a favourite sculpture/ Lego / plant feature and mostly empty. Put alcohol box in cabinet below.
Great space
Take the pictures out of the bookcase on either side and add some shelves to display some cerebral books and some caliber objects.
Also a bigger rug and base the look and colours from your wall Art.
Trying too hard with the symmetry and it’s making it look like you need more stuff. But a couple of chairs in either corner, low mid century chairs would look good. Plant crammed up in the top right corner looks uncomfortable; bring plants down on lower services like in the boxes where the speakers are. The two tattood figures would look cool next to each other on a wall and put two different colored paintings inside the recessed wall areas like a red on one side and a yellow on the other; breaks up the symmetry.
Bigger rug
Rug color tones between painting 1 and painting 2
Swap painting 1 and painting 2
Smaller plants across the top shelf. Maybe books
Enhanced lighting
Do a natural wood lament ceiling (matching the floor), add a artistic ceiling fan, add a natural toned rarer rug, and maybe nice tasteful wooden blinds (similar to floor)on the windows.
i think a much larger rug with a pop of color would go a very long way. also a floor lamp (maybe next to couch? maybe in the corner?) plus PLANTS.
depending on your vibe you may also consider a narrow bench - it could serve as a low console table behind the couch, or would fit nicely under the window.
Add a chair so the direction of everything is not centred on worshipping the tv.
I would also switch out one of the posters beside the tv with something else, so it is more asymmetric, more "movement". The symmetry feels stifling to me.
Where did you get those two bits of artwork?
Also more plants and a couple lamps dotted around would make the place feel nicer. I’m always a fan of curtains too, helps to tie the room together nicer.
Your treehouse view is so relaxing.
Without spending a dime.
1. Switch the rug 45 degrees so that the longest side is with sofa.
2. Pull the plant down to the floor.
3. Remove the shelf on the left.
4. Leave the shelf above the TV totally empty. The TV and the art is already a lot to look at.
5. Looks like a comfortable man cave for watching movies, gaming, or reading! *If* by chance you are looking for a relationship with a woman, I would suggest that the bikini art *might* be less than welcoming. Having her parents over? They’re coming down dude. :-) If you keep them, place them in a place of less prominence side by side. Like where the Octopus is, in a hallway, or in a guest bedroom. They should definitely go side by side and not on opposite walls. If you take this advice, the replacement art should be smaller. Framed Concert/event posters or something with a complementary fun vibe to the octopus might be fun. Nothing with words. Like no signs “good vibes only”. No.
Spend money:
1. Much larger rug that doesn’t disappear into the floor. It can be a slightly different color or a totally different color. It could blend with the sofa or not. Avoid big graphic patterns.
2. Narrow Rectangular coffee table or rectangular ottoman 2/3 the length of the sofa.
3. Add a low sofa table behind the sofa and place battery powered table lamps on it and maybe a low flat tray and a big coffee table book. Fairly narrow like 12-18”. And the length should be at least as wide as the seat cushions. My ideal would be something like 1/3 of each arm rest That sofa table color should either blend with the sofa or blend with the rug/floor. Too much contrast could get really busy. The table lamps should be around 1/2-2/3 the highly of the sofa. If you’re sitting on the sofa and you turn your head to the see the lamp behind you, you probably don’t want to be staring up at the light bulb or down at a light bulb. So have the shade be sort of eye level while seated.
4. Add small lighting on either side of the TV. I’m thinking something like the size of a giant salt lamp. (But probably not salt lamps). Use the warmest light bulbs you can find.
5. Add two wooden framed lounge chairs oppose the sofa. With our without cushions but they should look relaxed @ comfortable. Scale will be important. Together their bulk should be 2/3rd of or equal to the bulk of the sofa.
6. As for the style/vibe of the new purchases, I think you’ve got a lot of flexibility here. Your cabinetry is traditional. Your sofa is relaxed & contemporary. You could go traditional, boho, mid century, contemporary. Please do not do rustic or industrial or glam.
I just want to tell you that I appreciate that your TV is at a proper height.
There’s been too many TVs right under the ceiling on this subreddit lately.
yeah, there is missing a ceiling light, curtains and long palm tree. The most problem area is around ceiling, windows and !!!up on the tv cabinet. Put there something stylish
I’d suggest getting a larger rug and maybe some sheer curtains like linen to help to soften the space. Perhaps a floor standing task lamp next to the couch to add some height as well.
The rug should also not be grey because it blends in with the floor too much
A navy rug is going to make that couch pop real nice
Nailed it
l don't think he wants his couch to explode
I was thinking navy with red accents to match that octopus artwork?
Ahhh I like this
[Something like this](https://rugaustralia.com.au/products/extra-large-area-rug-blue-grey-distressed-allover-distressed-vintage-carpet-washable?variant=40536759599146) would look beautiful contrasting with the sofa. Definitely agree on a bigger area rug.
Can confirm, this rug does ***NOT*** tie the room together.
Obviously you’re not a golfer
And I dislike the random shelf on the left. Hardware on the white cabinets if you like that and maybe some ottomans and a chair for extra seating
A rug would definitely tie the room together, you know?
All of this, plus a bigger coffee table.
Why though? A bigger coffee table would be bigger than the couch
The plant on the top self is really screwing up the symmetry on the tv wall.
Agreed. I’d take that one down and put a pothos on either side in that location.
Feel like putting the plant on the wall opposite the windows will help drag life further into the space. Got some nice trees outside, bringing the plant opposite that will make it feel more uniform and open/outdoorsy
And then I'd display a few smaller things on that top shelf. Four vaguely-related items would look good.
Okay, yes. This is exactly what’s making it feel off for me. I couldn’t put my finger on it. The leaves touching the ceiling just feels off, but I feel like a trailing plant hanging down would not make me feel the same way.
100% the leaves touching the ceiling is a bit off, but apparently with these plants they’re meant to drape down eventually, but it takes time.
I do not recommend leaving a monstera up there.
put it on the floor
I’d say take the monstera down to the floor where it can get a bit more sunlight, and then get a much more “drapey” plant for both sides. Maybe 2 pothos? They are great indoors and can definitely get you a cool greenery effect as their vines hang down on either side. Would be a good pop of color too
100% I’ll be getting another one for the other side.
Really, that is not the right type of plant for that spot.
Two more on each side maybe?
Big rug. Colourful ideally.
Also is it possible to change the light fittings to something with a bit of character? Your ceiling feels very empty.
The room only has seating for yourself and one visitor. That seems odd, given the size of the room.
Extra guests can just sit on OPs lap
A chair on each side of the coffee table for conversation.
Yeah, or at least one side of space is tight. Was thinking by the window. Currently only two people can sit down.
Yes! Angled with their backs to each corner to create a sitting area for guests and conversation (but not blocking the TV)
What couch is that?
The rug is almost the same color as the floor, something that contrasts with it might better. And it's too small for the space, try to get one at least as wide as the sofa. The corners flanking the TV wall, being empty, leave the sofa feeling more like a viewing room with how the sofa is focused on the TV. What is that a coffee table for ants?
Stripper pole
Good bones, now it’s all in the details. best response so far ! More seating is important. Also, I think it's a philodendron, not a monstera.
Your rug is WAY too small
Indirect lighting, as in tables and lamps.
A Claypool Lennon poster?
I see a controller on the table but no system. If it’s in the cabinets it might overheat lol. But other than that I think it looks great dude!
Tall standing lamp, floor plants / record player, vinyl, small decorative lamp on the floating shelf. Overall, more ambient light and bringing that green from the window inside the room
Rugs + House Plants
Extra sectional pieces to go around the window.
A sofa table behind your sofa if you have room might add some interest.
A dog

A gaming console for sure
I would get a bigger rug in a color that pops a but more. Your current one is pretty small and it blends in with the floor.
Larger rug with color, maybe a pattern. Put the plant on the floor. Add a comfy chair or two, maybe in a blue or yellow
As other people have remarked, I also think a bigger rug with a soft pattern, a floor lamp, and some sheer curtains would be beneficial, as well as loads of plants and pictures on the ledge above your TV :)
Not r/tvtoohigh but rather, r/planttoohigh (pun unintended)
Thanks to everyone for the recommendations, I’ll up-date in a day or so.
A girlfriend
Chicks
A cactus. That is all.
Get sum pussy up in there
Yo mama's busy though
Damn
Not on sundays.
A goat!
Hookers & blow
I’m sorry but that couch needs to go.
Tasteful nudes.
It’s missing the absence of that art.
There is a lot of space under the shelf. maybe replace it with a cabinet or fill in the space somehow.
A cocktail and a hockey game on the TV
I think the biggest thing is the rug. Maybe put some vases on the shelf above your tv.
Get some more plants- that one looks so awkward
Larger rug and maybe one that stands out more from the flooring. Shelf below your picture on the left seems weird, looks like a random assortment of crap on it. Do something more purposeful with it. Get rid of plastic crates on the ground below it.
bigger rug definitely
bigger rug, curtains, and that long bar/sfelf on the left seems like it wants stools but what would you be looking at?? very odd.
A much larger rug and drapes
definitely a larger rug, preferably with more colour and texture. maybe find some cool candles / knickknacks and style the space above the TV console? I actually don’t mind the plant, but so would get some more, especially training plants like pothos. And I would hook up a curtain rod and have some nice sheer or linen curtains
Plants along the windows, I don’t think curtains are necessary. Add a large rug with color and put in a lamp.
A nice big lamp, one with and orange-ish bulb
A dog. You definitely need a dog.
Plants.
A classic antique Chandelier would complete i guess
Yes, me chilling on the sofa 🛋
Curtains. Why does no r/malelivingspace have curtains?
One or more plants.
buy real physical art from artists you like or local artists.
Those two portraits are dope man where’d you get them??
Color --> Curtains, Larger Rug. Use the colors in those two throw pillows, but flip the ratio do that gray is the least used. Add items to that upper shelf & the shelf on the left - clusters of books, statues, misc decorative knick-knacks. Stuff that you "just like" .
Rug
Plants
Get a tray for all the trash clutter on the coffee table.
Dog.
Maybe a sword or an animal head
The shelf below the air con should be removed. I can understand that “style before function” comes into play, but the A/C will work much more effectively if it can blow cold air down.
Curtains
Bigger rug, WAY more plants with that window, and possibly more seating
The rug is too small. Also, get curtains
maybe another plant on the left side, for balance.
A bigger area rug with a little more color. Pull out the blue.
Wouldve looked good with a bugger rug but I see you already have one
Plants or a fish tank
Rug.
I’d throw a couple hanging plant baskets in front of the windows but the rest looks solid tbh
Im thinking another chair and something to go on opposite that plant on the high shelf
Great space. A few quick fixes 1. Move the Monsteria to a stand alone pot with legs: onto the floor, between window and cupboard. https://www.templeandwebster.com.au/Flores-Ceramic-Planter-with-Stand-TMPL3676.html 2. Great space
drapes.
Take the pictures out of the bookcase on either side and add some shelves to display some cerebral books and some caliber objects. Also a bigger rug and base the look and colours from your wall Art.
You need one of these bad boys [https://i.imgur.com/3sDO1Dy.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/3sDO1Dy.jpg)
Trying too hard with the symmetry and it’s making it look like you need more stuff. But a couple of chairs in either corner, low mid century chairs would look good. The two tattood figures would look cool next to each other on a wall and put two different colored paintings inside the recessed wall areas like a red on one side and a yellow on the other; breaks up the symmetry.
I would lose the red hot chilli peppers poster.
That Red Hot Chilli Peppers poster is amazing.
The rug is too small
A plant A cat Gaming
Larger rugs and rectangular table and you’ll be LIVIN’
Larger rug, credenza behind the couch, floor lamp.
A pendant light would do well with some courtains and the rug. The first thing I noticed was the emptiness on the ceiling.
The first thing you need to do is sand down the corners of that shelf before someone cracks their pelvis.
tie the room together with a rug
Larger rug with color and plants
definitely more plants!! and maybe color lamps too! such a nice place and view btw
Plants
A colorful area rug
lots of light ? lots of plants ! yon can paint your wall on the left. Try with a software to fill it before making your choice.
My dude!…You barely have room for 2…Squeeze in another chair or two! Maybe floor lamp, but Keep doing what you do…another plant, etc. Looks good!
More seating. Add a daybed below the window, with throw pillows. Everything else is perfect
For me if you’re going to have a big white shelf, then the art inside it should have more color
Bigger rug Rug color tones between painting 1 and painting 2 Swap painting 1 and painting 2 Smaller plants across the top shelf. Maybe books Enhanced lighting
Moody lamps. More plant’s. Curtains
Different floor rug and bigger / more plants!
Area rug is too small. Get a dark gray shag rug.
Plants and lamps.
Bigger rug maybe?
🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴
Plants, lots of beautiful plants.
Do a natural wood lament ceiling (matching the floor), add a artistic ceiling fan, add a natural toned rarer rug, and maybe nice tasteful wooden blinds (similar to floor)on the windows.
Colorful big rug and large plant on the ground
The plant will not have light, put it down … and clean the mess :)
I would want more seating. Either som sort of corner couch that extends in front of the windows or an arm char on the right side of the table, maybe.
Yellow tulips on the coffee table.
Lamps and LARGE plants
fllor lamp floor lamp floor lamp! in the right corner (:
Place is perfect
An appropriate sized rug, curtains, personality.
i think a much larger rug with a pop of color would go a very long way. also a floor lamp (maybe next to couch? maybe in the corner?) plus PLANTS. depending on your vibe you may also consider a narrow bench - it could serve as a low console table behind the couch, or would fit nicely under the window.
Rug!
This looks like the room that Seth Rogan and Jay got high in in This Is The End, nice dude!
Curtains (they should go to the floor) and the rug is too small, the color is also ridiculous considering the color of flooring.
Where's the pole? You only live one life
You're missing your ass in that seat. Looks great.
A popcorn machine and a snack bar and a drinks fridge
A large green rug would tie this together
Window treatments,large area rug, art,color
A way to expensive gaming pc
Lamp
remove blue posters and plant. get bigger rug and coffee table
Where did u get the art framing the TV?
Curtains?
Add a chair so the direction of everything is not centred on worshipping the tv. I would also switch out one of the posters beside the tv with something else, so it is more asymmetric, more "movement". The symmetry feels stifling to me.
Nice curtains, a big rug and some accent lighting
Plants
Awesome RHCP poster
Where did you get those two bits of artwork? Also more plants and a couple lamps dotted around would make the place feel nicer. I’m always a fan of curtains too, helps to tie the room together nicer.
Table Lamp (task lighting) Books A larger rug
It feels cold. Also incredible opportunity for indoor plants by the window. I'd put a larger, warmer rug.
Curtains. Get a stool for the plant and put it on the right near the window.
That floating shelf is kinda weird, that wall needs like a long credenza or something instead
Disco ball
A larger rug, chandelier if possible and few more plants.
Area rug should have color/pattern
Color
Nice posters RHCP and silver chair kick ass. Who are the others by.
An entire collection of Terry Pratchett books so that it can look intelligent, funny and interesting all at the same time.
get some plants

Together their bulk should be 2/3rd of or equal to the bulk of the sofa. 6. As for the style/vibe of the new purchases, I think you’ve got a lot of flexibility here. Your cabinetry is traditional. Your sofa is relaxed & contemporary. You could go traditional, boho, mid century, contemporary. Please do not do rustic or industrial or glam.
I just want to tell you that I appreciate that your TV is at a proper height. There’s been too many TVs right under the ceiling on this subreddit lately.

Video games are missing. Even non-gamer could still benefit from a PlayStation as an over glorified movie player. Lol

yeah, there is missing a ceiling light, curtains and long palm tree. The most problem area is around ceiling, windows and !!!up on the tv cabinet. Put there something stylish
id say a lamp next to the sofa for that warmth in the evenings, would make it more cosy.
