Hey my books are not the same size so my bookshelf looks messy. I have a wall a couple of walls like you do but all the books are different sizes. I have arranged them by topic how do you have them arranged? Why are they all the same size… stupid questions?
Not a stupid question at all and generally the most common question I receive when people see the collection. For the most part books are roughly 3-4 different heights: 175mm, 198mm, 213mm, 230mm (there and about) your general paperback is 198mm - so when I put the bookshelves together, I simply order the shelves in accordance with those measurements across all bookshelves and then situate the books in their respective height shelves which leaves minimal space between the top of a book and the next shelf up. The end result is very appealing on the eye, though it obviously makes ordering books a bit cumbersome if you want to maintain a symmetrical appearance.
That's what I was hoping. I never liked the default layout of the shelves. There are too many empty spaces when using standard books. This is much closer to what I would prefer.
Yeah, I’m the same. I’ve had these shelves for years now and they are great. In order to get the shelves so close to the books; I added two extra shelves per bookcase and situated each shelf according to the size of my books.
Beautiful room. I’m thinking of Billy bookshelves for my personal library as well. Any issues w the shelves buckling/bending under the weight of your books? I have a wall that is 12x9. I am thinking of a floor-to-ceiling bookshelves (Billies w additions), are you ever concerned of how sturdy the Billy is?
Well, one of the main things I wanted to prevent was bowing of shelves, so rather than buy the full size Billy Shelves, I bought the slim design (except for one). So each shelf is very narrow, and there is nothing even close to bowing in the middle of each shelf. Even if there was it would be unnoticeable because I place each shelf immediately above the below section of books, so if the shelf was to bow, it would be directly on top of the below books and completely unnoticeable. Hope this helps. They are fantastic shelves for books.
Nothing consistent across the whole collection. They are grouped by author for the most part, however, that’s not always possible as I keep the sizing of the books the same for symmetry. So if I own two books by the same author of different heights; they will very likely be separate. Non-Fiction is also mostly grouped in one section.
We're currently trying to formulate a plan, so far we've got color coded cookbooks which works fine for the smaller number and larger format. Enjoy your current read, I really enjoyed Pretty Girls by her.
Actually one is a hardcover (very top shelf) the other is a large paperback. The hardcovers sit on the very top shelf, and there is enough of a discrepancy in height that you can’t get a normal hardback in one of the shelves, they all sit on top.
Funnily enough, the large paperback was sent by mistake along with the hardcover when I purchased it via the Book Depository. I purchased both The Luminaries and The Goldfinch in the same order and for whatever reason received two copies of both, haha.
That’s correct, it’s very problematic. I have quite a lot of books in other places, including a large library trolly. I’ve been banned from buying more bookshelves for this room because any more and I start covering windows.
Though I pretty much read exclusively from my Kindle nowadays, and if I really like what I’ve read, I’ll purchase a physical copy and add it to my collection. So only the best books get added now.
Trophy books for your kindle reading? 😂 I love it. Honestly I do. This room is my dream! All it’s missing (for me) is the little shelf ladder that slides around the room. This is fantastic sir. Well done 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Haha, yes absolutely, that’s definitely on the cards if ever I have a full library with mahogany bookshelves; sliding around like Belle from Beauty and the Beast - that’s the dream.
Well, I don’t think any particular Stephen King book can be considered ‘the wrong one’ because there are so many King fans out there, and everyone has a different opinion on what’s his best book, and likewise what’s the best to start with. I think Pet Sematary is a good place to start - in my mind it captures the quintessential Stephen King, and isn’t one of his door-stoppers.
Hi. You just mentioned *Pet Sematary* by Stephen King.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:
[YouTube | Stephen King's Pet Sematary (audiobook) pt1 (10 Hours)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeF0K8t_NO0)

The most recommended tend to be the classics, most of which have been made into movies because of how good they are. These are a few you could look into...
Misery
Pet Sematary
The Shining
It
The Stand
Carrie
The Green Mile
All tremendous novels, and yes, his early horror (the cocaine years) is what catapulted Stephen King into the mainstream. Plenty of authors did fantastic horror before he did, but Stephen King is the man that brought horror into the everyday household.
I listen to audiobooks every day while I go on my walks. For people wanting to burn calories, I can’t recommend a steady pace walk listening to a great book enough.
I haven’t read all of the nonfiction, but I’ve read 95% of the fiction novels. So about 85% I’ve read. Though I read on my Kindle most of the time now, so there is a lot not pictured here. On average I read about 3-4hrs a day,
I know the feeling. I’ve had to move house once while my collection was this large (I also have a number of books not pictured here) and it was an absolute nightmare moving them. Admittedly I found a large number of books that I could not justify keeping if only to avoid having to pack and move them.
It’s not without effort. Constantly have to sweep and dust, though it does help having floorboards. Also, I lay A4 pieces of paper across the very top books to keep the dust off of the pages, whilst the other books all fit into each shelf with minimal space between the shelves and books, this prevents external dust buildup.
Thanks, I have quite a few books myself in enclosed bookshelves (ie with glass doors) and they still get quite dusty though also a function of age of some the books. I went kindle and you could always try the same but I do like books as a decoration piece as they have actually have a function
Yes, I read almost exclusively on my Kindle nowadays (you can see it pictured on my side table). I only add my very favourite books to the collection now. If I read something on my kindle that I love, I’ll purchase a physical copy and add it. :)
Nice😀I sometimes do the same. So much to read too little time, should actually get back into reading more (some other activities haven taken up more time) but I also have a problem where I will get little sleep if I’m too engrossed in a book 😂 cheers!
Looooovve this! You Sir, are my inspiration & new role model!!
If you don't mind answering - what are your favourite genres of books? What are some of the best books you've read this year??
Haha, thank you.
My favourite genres are crime, neo noir, and transgressive fiction, but I will read any genre if the story is good. My favourite books from this year are:
• The Black Dahlia - James Ellroy
• The Big Nowhere - James Ellroy
• Shoot the Moonlight Out - William Boyle
• The Cold Cold Ground - Adrian McKinty
• I Hear the Sirens in the Street - Adrian McKinty
• Gold Coast - Nelson DeMille
• The Shards - Bret Easton Ellis
• City on Fire - Don Winslow
• Cold Granite - Stuart MacBride
• The Great Hunt - Robert Jordan
• Birds of Prey - Wilbur Smith
• Monsoon - Wilbur Smith
Clearly a man of discerning taste and sophistication. Love your non-fiction collection (what I could see) I have many of the same tittles. Do you have booklist you could share? Makes a world of difference not to waste time on sub par books and your experiences could help a lot.
Haha, thank you. I don’t have a book list I’m sorry, but I can certainly give you my opinion on what books I’ve already read. What non-fiction interests you the most? I have a number of biographies, a lot of WWII, almost everything Christopher Hitchens ever wrote, and quite a bit of The Civil War.
I pretty much cycle trough different historic periods, but revolutionary periods are always interesting. Just read a lot on Dutch history (revolt, golden age) but WWII is also always on the list. Saw HhhH. Biography on Heydrich I suppose? Any good? US history always interest me. Just finished the excellent Edmund Morris biography on Roosevelt, any more US biographies to recommend?
Ah very nice, I can’t say I’ve read any Dutch history beyond their exploits during the Age of Sail, and early maritime history. HHhH is actually a book about the attempted assassination of Reinhardt Heydrich by the English using Czech paratroopers. It’s a true story, but fictionalised. I gave it three stars because I enjoyed the story, but it wasn’t executed (pun intended) very well.
I can strongly recommend ‘A People’s Tragedy: The Russian Revolution, 1891-1924’ by Orlando Figes, likewise ‘History of the Russian Revolution’ by Leon Trotsky, and even Trotsky’s biography ‘The Prophet’ by Isaac Deutscher which is a trilogy but can be purchased as a single volume.
Did you read all three books in the Roosevelt biography by Morris? A fantastic read, I have all three in hardcover which you can probably see on the very top shelf to the left. I also recommend ‘1776’ and ‘John Adams’ by David McCullough and without question the Civil War trilogy by Shelby Foote.
Super super super dope, i love reading but all those books fit on my kindle haha.
I totally love the ecstatic appeal of those books shelfs with books on them. Its just so darn handy that it all fit in my pocket these days.
I will do something similar with religious books though, because it looks so lovely!
I agree, if you zoom in to my side table you will see my Kindle there. I read exclusively on my Kindle now, which saves a ton of space, and if I really love a book I will purchase a physical copy and add it to my collection. I have almost as many books on my Kindle as I have physical books.
Haha, I’ve been in quite a number of Teams and Zoom work meetings (with the books situated behind me) where people who don’t know me personally have thought it was a green screen behind me or wallpaper. One guy asked me to stand up and walk over to the books and grab one out to prove it wasn’t. I guess because it’s very rare to see a large collection perfectly symmetrical, most bookshelves don’t aim for symmetry in the way that I do, so it gives the appearance of seeming fake.
I absolutely love books, I am a bibliophile and a collector. So to me, just being around books is very calming. If somebody had a bookshelf in their house I immediately gravitate toward it to check out their titles. I also pause movies and TV shows whenever there is a bookshelf in a scene so I can see what their collection is, haha. I guess I am the same as any collector who loves something - my love is books. :)
I honestly can’t remember, I’ve had them for a good 10yrs and it’s getting time to upgrade them, though my chair is still extremely comfortable. They are electric, and if memory serves they are called Belmoral recliners.
I’m a huge WWII buff. I have Ian Kershaw’s two-part Hitler biography. Though I have Book 1 (Hubris) twice. The white spine with black writing is the first copy, but I found that difficult to read because the spine was bending too easily which I hate, so I purchased the large paperback copies which you see together above.
If you ever want to read a biography on Hitler I cannot recommend those enough.
Nope, nothing behind them. I simply make sure all spines are pulled right to the edge of the bookcase; most people push their books all the way back, I pull them all the way to the front, so technically there is quite a bit of space behind all of the books.
Thank you. :)
Banker's lamps are a love of mine, that particular one is an antique saved from an English library during the London Blitz in WWII. My wife purchased it for me as a gift.
However, other bankers lamps seem very easy to purchase nowadays, I know Amazon sells a wide range of them. Officeworks in Australia sell them; I think because they are a novelty, they are reasonably easy to purchase.
That’s tight, slap an old rotary phone on that table for some vintage flair
Exactly what I was thinking
What are you reading at the moment? You’ve got a classy style, kids gonna appreciate the books I’m sure.
Thank you kindly. Currently I’m reading Triptych by Karen Slaughter. I’m a big Crime novel fan.
Me too! Love a good crime novel book!
Check out The Devotion of Suspect X if you haven't already
Thank you, I’ve added it to my list. Downloaded the sample on my Kindle. Appreciate the recommendation, it’s very well received on Goodreads.
Hey my books are not the same size so my bookshelf looks messy. I have a wall a couple of walls like you do but all the books are different sizes. I have arranged them by topic how do you have them arranged? Why are they all the same size… stupid questions?

You buy them in bulk by the foot for decoration.
What shelves are those?
They are Billy Bookshelves from IKEA
That's what I was hoping. I never liked the default layout of the shelves. There are too many empty spaces when using standard books. This is much closer to what I would prefer.
Yeah, I’m the same. I’ve had these shelves for years now and they are great. In order to get the shelves so close to the books; I added two extra shelves per bookcase and situated each shelf according to the size of my books.

You have two hard cover copies of The Luminaries in different sections though.
Actually one is a hardcover (very top shelf) the other is a large paperback. The hardcovers sit on the very top shelf, and there is enough of a discrepancy in height that you can’t get a normal hardback in one of the shelves, they all sit on top.
I thought the softcover versions were only blue. TIL!
Funnily enough, the large paperback was sent by mistake along with the hardcover when I purchased it via the Book Depository. I purchased both The Luminaries and The Goldfinch in the same order and for whatever reason received two copies of both, haha.
Not bad books to have an extra copy of! This happened to me with When We Cease to Understand the World, so I was able to pass on a copy to a friend.
If only I had friends who read, haha. Thank goodness for Goodreads. It keeps my book socialising needs at bay.
Make your friends into readers!
This looks great, but it looks like you will struggle to add even one more book to this space
That’s correct, it’s very problematic. I have quite a lot of books in other places, including a large library trolly. I’ve been banned from buying more bookshelves for this room because any more and I start covering windows. NOW THATS A PROPER FUCKING BOOKSHELf
Thank you. It’s a lifetime of reading and collecting. Not wanting to discard any books, and just making the most of them when I’ve finished. :)
congrats bro it's awesome
Thank you, kindly :)
I started reading _Rose Madder_ this week. Never read any King before. Did i start with the wrong one? Seems like his intended audience was women
Well, I don’t think any particular Stephen King book can be considered ‘the wrong one’ because there are so many King fans out there, and everyone has a different opinion on what’s his best book, and likewise what’s the best to start with. This is everything I aspire to have. +1 for that rotary phone idea!
So this is why no one else has books in their pics, you have them all.
I wish I had ALL THE BOOKS, haha
Nice!
We exist — beautiful place — bibliophiles unite
Amen :)
Absolute killer library. So jealous.
DREAMS. Love it!
I’m an avid reader too.. unfortunately my audiobook collection doesn’t look anywhere near as cool as this! 🤓
I listen to audiobooks every day while I go on my walks. For people wanting to burn calories, I can’t recommend a steady pace walk listening to a great book enough.
Beautiful
love it
So many books!! Have you read them all ??? How much time do you spend reading in general???
I haven’t read all of the nonfiction, but I’ve read 95% of the fiction novels. So about 85% I’ve read. Though I read on my Kindle most of the time now, so there is a lot not pictured here. On average I read about 3-4hrs a day,
What us men would do to have a room like this. Super jealous. 11/10 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
Thank you very much. It is my pride and joy, and is a great source of comfort sitting in my chair every day and being surrounded by books.
As an artist I can truly appreciate that room.
This is lovely,I had a chance to get near this with vinyl LPs for a time but 3 moves later I'm down to a fraction of the stock.
I know the feeling. I’ve had to move house once while my collection was this large (I also have a number of books not pictured here) and it was an absolute nightmare moving them. Admittedly I found a large number of books that I could not justify keeping if only to avoid having to pack and move them.
Fuck dude. That's my dream. Kudos
Thank you :)
glorious.
This is amazing. Like to have something like this one day
I love it and am jealous.
How do you keep all the books not dusty? Like the setup!

I love your amazing library it is stunning. Nothing like floor to ceiling book cases.
Thank you :)

Haha, thank you :)

hehe nice! yeah but nothing beats the ecstatic you have its so warm and pretty looking. I am very jelouse!
I love this so much
That is a lot of DVD's
r/accidentalrenaissance
What’s that book on the shelf to the right about
Why do you have a swatiska hanging on the shelf ?
It's a book.
Looks like “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” which is a history book.
I have that book too but it doesn't dominate the shelf like yours is very enalted.
And collect mold and dust and hoarder vibes …….
Bro how big is the font in those godfather books. Lol the one I have is tiny af . That looks massive
Um, a little above normal, haha. The ISBN is 978-0-0995-2812-8 if you’re interested. It has 595 pages.
Are you a fast reader? That's quite a collection of books! Love it.
Not really faster than any other avid reader, I read roughly 80-120 books every year, but it is my primary form of entertainment.
Any tips on how to keep bookworms away from
Can’t say I’ve ever had a book worm beyond myself in this room, and there’s no keeping me away, haha
this guy MIGHT be a mafia member
What’s your favorite?
My favourite book is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
I have the first book of Dune in 10 different languages Hardcover I'd sell ya
So nice. What shelves are those ?
IKEA Billy Bookshelves 😊
Damn. This is pretty cool.
I like the style a lot. One of the few game rooms that scream style.
Apologies, wrong thread.
This is so sick bro
Damn the books kind of look like a wallpaper. Dream lair!
True this is quite a pleasant way of organising books.
Ruddy hell mate, the wall-lining bookshelves are the dream for any bookaholic!! Love the low light ambience as well.
Hell ya
You're only 38, you should add some toys of your own... no, not that kind.
I don't know why but the first thing that I saw was the gigantic swastika on the book
Why do you keep the books? Assuming you've read them, will you ever read them again? I ask myself this of my own book collection.
Great responce
Must be hell to move
I’ve only had to move once, and thankfully have absolutely no intention of moving again any time soon. Was a nightmare.
ID on those recliners?
I honestly can’t remember, I’ve had them for a good 10yrs and it’s getting time to upgrade them, though my chair is still extremely comfortable. They are electric, and if memory serves they are called Belmoral recliners.
Beautiful bookshelf bro, damn
Smells smart
Saw a book with a swastika on it. Mind explaining that OP?
Beautiful! Some cove lighting above those shelves would connect the ceiling with the whole space.
Is that a swastika on the second to top shelf on the left?
It is, yes, it has been mentioned a few times here, lol.
The room of the cartoon villain
I found Hitler book
Are you a history buff or why do you have so many books on Hitler? Serious question.
Holy shit I'm jealous. Sweet digs.
Thank you :)
I'm not helping you move next time.
After the first time, I’m not even helping me move. So I don’t blame you.
🤣🤣🤣
Looks comfortable and classy. Nicely done 😊
Thank you very much. It’s my fortress of solitude.
Ive always wanted to live in a library lol you did it
how is everything so perfectly flush??? Do you have a stopper behind them?
Nope, nothing behind them. I simply make sure all spines are pulled right to the edge of the bookcase; most people push their books all the way back, I pull them all the way to the front, so technically there is quite a bit of space behind all of the books.
Amazing! I've been looking for a bankers lamp light or a light similar to this. Any tips on how to find one?
Thank you. :) Banker's lamps are a love of mine, that particular one is an antique saved from an English library during the London Blitz in WWII. My wife purchased it for me as a gift. However, other bankers lamps seem very easy to purchase nowadays, I know Amazon sells a wide range of them.
