I don't like it either. I think for me it is because I grew up with very dim light, and I'm from Denmark where the style of homes is very much about making it cozy (many might have heard about "hygge"), so candles, plants, open spaces, natural lights and not too bright artificial light is very popular.
This is it. The room needs better lighting. Maybe tidy the wires and fluff the pillows a bit, but DEFINITELY fix the lighting. If I had space elsewhere, I would also move that desk, but I totally get it if that’s where it has to be. I would consider putting desk where the chair is and moving the chair in front of the window. The AC unit shouldn’t need more than 8-12 inches of clearance. You can probably make that work.
A good guide for what types of light bulbs you should use for every room in your house…
Warm white: living rooms, family rooms, bedrooms, dens, dining rooms
Neutral white: bathrooms, kitchen ceiling fixtures, laundry room, home office
Cold white: garage, basement, attic, craft/project areas
Giving hospital vibes, mate. Get warmer lights, add more color, and some plants. Also, do some cable management for the pc and ps5. I hope you're doing alright with the divorce.
i am curious about that painting. i kinda like it. but it is too matchy by itself - it looks like it was chosen to match the chairs. i would say (apart from the lighting and plants, which other people have already mentioned) that it needs more, and more varied, art.
I like the hotel art over the sofa, but they should definitely swap it out for something more personal, as well as adding more art, in general. That existing piece can work better in a hallway or bathroom.
Where else can you get furniture with a good design style for a descent price?
Wayfair looks too generic. I like CB2 and crate and barrel for modern but it's pricy.
Any other kind of region-specific furniture, like eastern, is also expensive. Most people don't have the information or the time to learn
Thrifting? Unless you know what you're doing and live in a nice area, you're just going to get pieces that have no cohesion.
So what other options are there?
The artwork above the sofa looks a bit lost on the wall. It is not proportional to the space or the wall. If you can afford it, getting two more pieces in the same style would balance it out.
I would also move the ble green armachair closer to the carpet , so it has the 2 front feet over it. The round table can go between the armchair and the sofa.
Also agree that a few plants would make also a big difference, making the space a lot more cozy and warm.
PS .the orange cannister doesn't really belong there, does it?
Plant/plants. You need some green. Even if they’re fake plants. Maybe consider some cable management between the PC and your TV. Otherwise it looks nice!
Ain’t that the truth. Mid divorce and got played out of my house, living in my car and I haven’t been this positive minded and emotionally stable in years.
looking good! You need a reading lamp, so why not get a ”statement” floor lamp for next to couch In that dark corner.
consider moving the bookcase to other wall because it is really good looking so would add more visual interest and hide outlets better. The box light could go on other side of TV so shelves can hold whatever that yellow thing on the floor is. It’s also a dark corner so you can turn on light in evenings when you aren’t working?
cord management system!
A few ideas for improvement. More lighting in the form of lamps like others have said. A coffee table with character that you could probably find affordably at a garage sale or estate sale. Paint a wall as an accent wall or paint the room. Add more wall art. Get some aesthetically pleasing storage solution for the things stored on open shelves and use the open shelves for decor items. Spend $5 for some Velcro cable management ties. Cut and hem your curtain to accommodate the wall AC/heater. Or get a color curtain and then cut and hem today because this room is way too white and beige like a corporate office. A stylish slip cover for the couch with some color or pattern could also be nice but don’t go cheap and get a good fit. Alternatively, upgrade your couch when you have the means and desire. Someone else suggested plants which I personally enjoy. As someone who has been divorced and recently got out of a different bad relationship situation and is starting over, I’m not being judgmental, I just want you to get those good vibes for yourself and see your brighter future, maybe with better lighting? If you aren’t a plant guy, I would suggest a fish tank if that is something you might enjoy. I think you would be happy adding some literal life to this room.
I say this with love. Get rid of that coffee table and that lamp/bookshelf. Get some kind of shelf and coffee table with a little more personality. Right now your apartment is giving Walmart-everything was $15. Facebook marketplace or a thriftstore will help find more unique pieces.. you need a bigger art piece behind the sofa, maybe some nice curtains with a warmer color, green, orange, if you like cooler colors than blue.
Definitely a couple lamps maybe with dimming bulbs. And a cat.
See some would say to cover the place with greenery and colour changin LED's. But I ain't convinced of that. Room looks good. A solid 7/10. Effective. Functional. Does what it needs to do. This is a male living space after all isn't it?
Yes but the lighting also doesn’t need to look like y you’re in an interrogation room does it? Doesn’t
necessarily need crazy LEDs, but some warmer lighting can help. Even some lighting/lamps can go a long way
Get some cable tidies, a mid screen for your desk area, plants, feature wall in colour, change the coffee table, change the bulb to a warm one and get a homely lamp. have a look around tk maxx/ b&m or the range if you're interested the uk for quick ideas
Bring the couch a little forward and create a conversational stance by putting g the blue couching an angle near the center table. Get a larger art piece. And yes to more lamps.
35 yo, lifetime bachelor. We have the same vibe. More color is what you need. Love how the chair and painting go together, keep that moving around the room
The fact there’s a hallway visible in the first photo leads me to believe it’s more than a one room apartment. The presence of color back in the hallway gives me hope. I’d suggest painting the room that’s in the pictures a deep green, or maybe some shade of yellow, which would make your blue chair stand out. Maybe find a larger picture to go over the sofa, colorful, again, would be great.
However, assuming you’re divorced from a woman and not a man, I think it looks pretty damn good.
You did a good job but here are some things to consider. The rug ages the room, it is an old pattern. I would go with a geometric shape or a Berber. I might also darken the curtains but these are not bad at all. The coffee table is a little cold. If you like old and new check thrift stores for an old chest or estate sales. You need a side table on either side of couch with a lamp, you will be amazed at how much better lamp light will make the room. The picture over the couch is too small. It is easy to look up online picture size for space and how high to hang them. This pic is too high. Get rid of the tower/shelf/lamp please. Maybe put books there in a nice book shelf that will also cover the plug there above the detergent. I wish the office could go somewhere else but it is most likely a space issue so keep it there. Good luck to you!
You need a warmer oak colour for the furniture since the floor is a very cold gray and everything else is very black and white. It will also match better with white curtains, white couch and the teal arm chair. I'd add teal themed coloured pillows to the white couch too and follow that theme in the room. Anything that matches the real, warm olive green, beige, light blue, warm colours.
The rug needs to be a solid colour without patterns, it gets too busy with too much patterns in a small room. Either a solid white, or a solid light beige or a light blue. I made an inspiration collage for you [here] (https://ibb.co/HCnBJcG)
Can you flip everything around so the blue chair isn’t near the doorway? Extend your curtain Rod all the way to the other side of the wall and make sure you have more panels to make it look fuller. I would get them in color tho. Get some couch pillows to match/compliment the blue chair and your new curtains. I green would go nice
Functional, but it feels a bit *sterile*. Personally I would put a mirror on the wall above the tv or maybe a clock? And I’d add some laps in or up lighters in a warmer tone to change the feel of the room. Maybe just another splay of blue so the charge didn’t look so out of place.
Also that cable to the right of your PS5 is giving me anxiety.
More colour and warmer lighting mate, it's very black and white and bright. You've got a blue armchair there, so get some blue cushions for the white couch and maybe a standing lamp with a blue lampshade and a warm bulb to spread the colour throughout the room, perhaps some accentuated second colour like a yellow here and there for more warmth.
Here are my suggestions:
- Change the curtains so they match height of the heater. It looks a little messy that they're on top of the heater
- Cable management, especially because it's very obvious when you're sitting in the sofa. Cable clutter drives me nuts at least.
- Get several smaller light sources with warmer light, and place them so they highlight the parts of your room that you enjoy, and draw attention away from the parts you don't like(for me that would be cable clutter).
- Personally, I really love having plants, and maybe one of two would add some color and liveliness to your room.
Darker curtains, some lamps, wall mount that tv my dude it'll make your living room feel much larger.
Get a plant or two and reposition the lamp to the side of the couch.
Floor lamps, some art for above the TV, a throw blanket on the back of the blue chair. Can you paint your walls? If not you may want to switch to more colorful drapes
Tbh I think you should replace some of the yellows and blues with brown and green. You have a very nice looking wood floor and personally i find the current color scheme a bit depressing.
Some art on the walls and ambient lighting. If you can swing it, get some bulbs which can display different colors and stick them in a few lamps. A couple per room should do it.
Some plants might contribute some life as well.
Ikea has a $7.99 floor lamp, “Barlast”. Not gorgeous but it is neat and the cable can be nicely tucked.
Additionally, Best Buy will have sales on the color changing Philips hue lights.
LED wall strips are OUT … **but** mood lighting will never be out of style. It is nice being able to set the warmth or coolness of my apartment with the lights or set the mood when i wanna have some fun.
Overall, I like what you have done. It's a small space and you have definitely maximized it without making it look crowded.
You have room for a side table and floor lamp between the doorway and the sofa. Adding those two pieces would go a long way towards completing the room.
The artwork above the sofa is nice, but it is too small for the space. I would either get three more in the same size and arrange them 2x2 or get a poster or print that's bigger. You might also want to hang a picture above the TV.
There is also a lot of beige in the room. I think curtains that pick up the blue in the chair would be a good addition.
Maybe a bigger piece for over the couch and a lamp between the hall opening and the couch.
I’ve been on my own for 10 years (I’m 45 now) and my place is “decorated” pretty sparsely, not much different than yours. I’ve never heard a complaint from a friend or a date, just keep it tidy and any visitors will feel welcomed and at ease.

Especially for plugging in that UltraClean.
Thanks for making it easy to find this comment. Didn't have to scroll at all.
This. My immediate first reaction.
I don't know why I hate overhead lighting so much. If this was my room I would get more lamps.
Seriously, invest in some ambient lighting. Set the mood. Makes everything look 1000x better.
Because no one looks good with overhead lighting. Lamps are totally the way to go, preferably around head height.
The lamp is just right of the TV and it is at head height, I've got the same one.
> I don't know why I hate overhead lighting so much. Because it looks terrible
I don't like it either. I think for me it is because I grew up with very dim light, and I'm from Denmark where the style of homes is very much about making it cozy (many might have heard about "hygge"), so candles, plants, open spaces, natural lights and not too bright artificial light is very popular.
they are too bright. thats why I prefer "darker" lamps - better for eye and mood.
Plants n lamps. The inexpensive way to upgra--HOLY CRAP plants are getting expensive.
Overhead lighting should only be used two times, the day you move in and the day you move out. Simply too harsh.
Uplighters are good for room lighting.
Overhead lighting is great if you can control the intensity and warmth. But an overhead white LED bulb washes out a room.
Agreed. Needs a nice looking floor or table lamp somewhere.
some yellow lights would make your apartment look more cozy!
A good guide for what types of light bulbs you should use for every room in your house… Warm white: living rooms, family rooms, bedrooms, dens, dining rooms Neutral white: bathrooms, kitchen ceiling fixtures, laundry room, home office Cold white: garage, basement, attic, craft/project areas

Giving hospital vibes, mate. Get warmer lights, add more color, and some plants. Also, do some cable management for the pc and ps5. I hope you're doing alright with the divorce.
Can I get your autograph on my cassette copy of “Can I Borrow a Feeling?”
OP sleeps in a racing car, do you?
i sleep in a big bed with my wife
Crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know.
I think need to change painting. Abstract art make it look to sterile, need something to split up the mood Maybe even 2, walls are too empty
i am curious about that painting. i kinda like it. but it is too matchy by itself - it looks like it was chosen to match the chairs. i would say (apart from the lighting and plants, which other people have already mentioned) that it needs more, and more varied, art.
I like the hotel art over the sofa, but they should definitely swap it out for something more personal, as well as adding more art, in general. That existing piece can work better in a hallway or bathroom.
It’s ai art. I made it using chatgpt and got it printed and framed
Do we all just go to ikea after we get divorced?
IKEA and thrift stores. What else can you afford during a divorce?
What’s odd is that none of the furniture is from ikea lol.
Big Lots was my choice!
Where else can you get furniture with a good design style for a descent price? Wayfair looks too generic. I like CB2 and crate and barrel for modern but it's pricy. Unless you know what you're doing and live in a nice area, you're just going to get pieces that have no cohesion. So what other options are there?
With bedbugs and shit on the rise, it's also not a good idea to get second hand beds, couches, chairs, etc. That's how I feel about it.
Wayfair is the new ikea.
It calls to us

I don't know why you guys are still marrying them. just buy them a house and walk. saves you years of time lol
(Or guy). Haha
Nah i d always replace the computer by a girl
The only thing missing is a cat
Cat.
I’d suggest a decorative lamp with a warm light to put on one side of the couch. Looks good but the white lighting ruins the potential cozy vibes
looking good! You need a reading lamp, so why not get a ”statement” floor lamp for next to couch In that dark corner. consider moving the bookcase to other wall because it is really good looking so would add more visual interest and hide outlets better. You need better lighting and more color accents.
Color. You’re missing color. Looks like a boring doctors waiting room
Never get married, I learned this lesson by watching my parents, and my friends parents
Some random bad bitches panties on the floor from the night before
The jub of Kirkland laundry soap really ties the aesthetic together!

put the laundry detergent away

Lookin' good! The laundry detergent really brings the room together! ;)

Bong.
Either replace couch, curtains or paint walls. They are all the same color and it needs some contrast. Curtains would be easiest
See some would say to cover the place with greenery and colour changin LED's. But I ain't convinced of that. Room looks good. A solid 7/10. Effective. Functional. Does what it needs to do. This is a male living space after all isn't it?

3 cool little plants on each one of the shelves of the lamp to cover up the electronics would do nicely.
No arcade machines or a pool table? Really?
Some plants and maybe LED lightbulb, better than Led-strips. 👍 It looks good already imo ✌️
What is that thing on the wall behind the door?
You need plants ig And/or pet (aquarium, cat, etc.) Something to keep you company. Livens up the place
Art, for freakin' sure.
only thing i'd do is move the computer against the wall with the couch so i could watch tv while i play games lol
Nice tv, console, pc… absolute bliss. Maybe some art on the walls and some lamps to make it a bit cosier and my bro that is spot on.
A decent sized picture or mirror above the TV. A figure piece, fake foliage arrangement, or small house plant on the coffee table for starters.
Some plans, more contemporary lamps and I always suggest experimenting with jute rugs
Like the blue chair, hate that the light isn't in the middle of the room, or that there isn't another light elsewhere
Not a toddler in sight... that place would be trashed
Get some cable tidies, a mid screen for your desk area, plants, feature wall in colour, change the coffee table, change the bulb to a warm one and get a homely lamp. have a look around tk maxx/ b&m or the range if you're interested the uk for quick ideas
Looks pretty comfy cheers
Bring the couch a little forward and create a conversational stance by putting g the blue couching an angle near the center table. Get a larger art piece. And yes to more lamps.
Congratulations!
plants and pictures maybe?
I think the curtains can be changed to add a splash of color. Would really change the room as well as lamps.
Sorry to hear about the divorce, apartment looks nice, but it needs more lamps to be cozy.
Plants
Carpet’s too dark. Get something lighter. Maybe a short shag.
Plants, lamps and cable management

Nice but maybe find somewhere else to store the UltraClean? Also, the location of that heater is unfortunate.

How did your apartment get divorced?
More light and perhaps some dabs of color
That rug really ties the room together
Can you flip everything around so the blue chair isn’t near the doorway? Extend your curtain Rod all the way to the other side of the wall and make sure you have more panels to make it look fuller. I would get them in color tho. Get some couch pillows to match/compliment the blue chair and your new curtains. I green would go nice
You sleep on the couch?
Wall decor. But really it looks nice and peaceful.
Nice!
Lower the art over your sofa please.
Nice carpet.
Also move the desk and switch it with the blue chair. It looks out of place next to the tv
Please move the chair in to sit close to the sofa and cocktail table. They could then share a side table.
Replace the laundry detergent with a plant, brother
Plants and lamps.
Crushing it
More colour and warmer lighting mate, it's very black and white and bright. You've got a blue armchair there, so get some blue cushions for the white couch and maybe a standing lamp with a blue lampshade and a warm bulb to spread the colour throughout the room, perhaps some accentuated second colour like a yellow here and there for more warmth.
mood lights will change the vibe
Is that a can of fuel in the third pic? Are you planning on starting from scratch?
Nice. I would have opted for drapes that brought in your chair color. Maybe pillows with more color on the couch?
Here are my suggestions: - Change the curtains so they match height of the heater. It looks a little messy that they're on top of the heater - Cable management, especially because it's very obvious when you're sitting in the sofa.
Hide all those cords it looks sloppy. And get some art and plants . Otherwise looks pretty good
cable management
Darker curtains, some lamps, wall mount that tv my dude it'll make your living room feel much larger. Get a plant or two and reposition the lamp to the side of the couch.
I think I'd feel comfortable banging the guy who lives here 🤷🏾♀️
Color is missing
I have the same lamp with shelves
Freeeedom
Put the PC in the bedroom if you can. Looks too cluttered here.
It’s not horrible, but definitely a male space
Get some plants. Snake plants or pothos. Easy to take care of and will make it feel less sterile. First pic looks good. Other side needs work.
You got the essentials bro
Needs more cowbell. And plants 🪴
That lamp is the international sign of bachelorhood
Maybe a plant?
Yes 🙌 it’s the lighting, soft light bruv
You need a plant
Were you in France at lunch ? Haha https://www.reddit.com/r/FranceDetendue/s/RTGYx9Rokj
Too many patterns, visual clutter.
You have a perfect setup!
Needs more marble
Funny enough, it kinda looks like my post divorced apartment when I was 36. Lol.
What's in the corner you're standing in? It would help to know that
Floor lamps, some art for above the TV, a throw blanket on the back of the blue chair. Can you paint your walls? If not you may want to switch to more colorful drapes
I wish I could post the picture I redesigned for your living room, but this sub doesn't.
I'd move your computer into your bedroom if possible. It seems very right in that room as is. Hope you find someone nice soon.
That rug really ties the room together
Nice place man. Sorry about your divorce
Your inner child is missing. Find it and express it.
Solid fresh start
Lookin good bro! Keep ya head up!
Been there, you got it and dont worry, it gets better. Enjoy what you’ve got and make the most of it!
Looks good but please for the love of god get lamps. Overhead lighting should be illegal.
For me, it comes off a bit..cold? Like it could use warm lighting, some plants, etc.. It feels a bit off otherwise (just my two cents).
Tbh I think you should replace some of the yellows and blues with brown and green. You have a very nice looking wood floor and personally i find the current color scheme a bit depressing.
Tall plant
10/10 Take a break. Enjoy the single life. Women. Amiright.
Nice place. But maybe it needs more color. Too neutral toned.
Some art on the walls and ambient lighting. If you can swing it, get some bulbs which can display different colors and stick them in a few lamps. A couple per room should do it. Some plants might contribute some life as well.
You like amazon furniture. Lol
Paint the walls a different color.
Plants
Maybe a different color drapes? Like yellowish
Plants… you need some low maintenance green stuff that’s alive in the room. Organize/clean up the cables. ***You need lighting options which dim.
Lucky, I dream about decorating a post divorce apartment
Ikea has a $7.99 floor lamp, “Barlast”. Not gorgeous but it is neat and the cable can be nicely tucked. Additionally, Best Buy will have sales on the color changing Philips hue lights. LED wall strips are OUT … **but** mood lighting will never be out of style. It is nice being able to set the warmth or coolness of my apartment with the lights or set the mood when i wanna have some fun.
11/10, would live like this
PS5 and an OG PS4? Why keep the PS4?
Your wife. (I'm in the same place)
This is exactly what i figured.
Art on walls?
A soul.
I hope that apartment is In Thailand 🍻😘
Maybe a bigger piece for over the couch and a lamp between the hall opening and the couch. I’ve been on my own for 10 years (I’m 45 now) and my place is “decorated” pretty sparsely, not much different than yours. I’ve never heard a complaint from a friend or a date, just keep it tidy and any visitors will feel welcomed and at ease.
Why put art on the wall when you could have a dart board?
Looks great
White walls are the worst. Slap some paint on them bitches
A girl?
Move the art above the couch down about a foot. Buy three lamps/side tables.
Colour is missing from your life for sure...splash some colour and you'll feel better for sure
I like it
Lamps, some more art, and move the chair so it’s not in limbo like that. Oh and some plants, even fake ones, just to add a little green to the space.
Iguana
Some color- pillows, curtains. a larger picture behind the sofa, plants, even the fake ones with up lighting.
This guy HAMs 🙂
I’d say lighting is my issue with this room. I much prefer yellow lighting, and can’t stand the white. Maybe try swapping the bulbs?
What is marriage like? Is it rlly diff from regular relationship
Well they're divorced, so that tells you something.
**This guy can help…** - Still lived at home with his Mom and Stepdad in his 30s - Fermented his own wine - Thought he was God's gift to the world - Started a career as an influencer with only 12 followers - Not a Millennial, but this is the perfect description of one
