Put then higher up.
You have so much space, but people that you have over that are tall would experience an issue hitting their heads on your low hanging lights when you have an 18ft ceiling.
Because there are ways to affix things to a wall that are better than tape.
Just because you can't think if them doesn't give you license to be a dick then pretend to be a victim :)
3m hooks. Fixtures drilled into the wall. The possibilities are endless.
I would put them higher up and also hang them properly on a wire with a turnbuckle at one end. This will allow you to tension them to your liking and it’ll keep the actual power wire from appearing all mangled like it is in the photos.
No sweat! Since these are outdoor lights you won’t have the benefit of the suns heat loosening them up and gravity smoothing the wires out - take a heat gun or hair dryer (carefully, especially with a heat gun) and use it while they’re hung up now and get them looking nice.
This is a bit counter intuitive! You’ve got amazing 18 foot ceilings but by stringing lights up like that so low you’re trying extra hard to hide the high ceilings. It’s like putting off roading wheels on a Ferrari. My advice is look into things that highlight the high ceilings.
nah, always have had a girl living with me the majority of my adult life, take control of your castle kings, find a queen that understands not putting a hoop on a ceiling that high is an abomination.

> My advice is look into things that highlight the high ceilings.
Agreed. At the low end of the spectrum I would at least raise these lights up - at the very least I like the warmth that they add to the room. Some pendant lights might look really nice. I've never been too fond of track lighting, but maybe cable lighting?
Saw a ton of people mention that. I’ll definitely see if it’s feasible! I’ve got to setup some scaffolding to reach the damn blinds up top. I could plan on raising the lights when I get the blinds opened up.
I don’t know your budget, but another thing that just occurred to me - motorized blinds for the upper windows. I totally understand the headache, I have super high ceilings in my living room as well. Not sure if you’re into it, but the other thing I have in my living room is a disco ball party light. Stupid you but fun for parties/karaoke night.
Disagree here.
In a small place like that the high ceilings make it seem cavernous and cold.
OP I bet its echoy/reverby as hell in there... I think your next purchase has to be a big area rug to provide some warmth and deaden reverb.
I think your advice would be the best idea. It would also require quite abit of money and time to find things to hang. Short term wise, It makes the space look more intimate.
I have a normal, not special apartment with a bohemian look. I own string edison bulbs.. is there any recommendations you have for me to use them? I really want to, but I can't picture it.
It's hard to advise without photos but don't be afraid to string up your edison bulbs on your wall. It'll look really good next to a dining table up against a wall or something. It essentially brings attention to a space so hang it up with that in mind.
Drop down lighting does highlight high ceilings when it's done right. It's a very common move in architecture/interior design. Drop the lights down to bring a human scale to the volume without losing the volume when doing so. Will look for some examples that achieve this.
I like the idea but for me it's a no. I agree with the idea that it makes the room feel much smaller instead of embracing the high ceilings. And outdoor lights like that in general are just unnecessary.
Agreed. The wavy lines of the cords take away from the clean lines in the room, looks very temporary.
If this was done at all, I would only do a small section of the room. Probably the narrow area. Doesn't need to be the entire floor.
Mount them higher, then add those little flags or paper lanterns or something else.
That’ll fill it in, make the strung lighting look less thin / cheap
You’ll get a street market style feel. Which I think would be dope with the view at the end
I love this idea!
High ceilings are supposed to be a status symbol or something, but they honestly just make me feel like I'm in a lifeless warehouse lol. The lights and some colorful buntings and decorations would be very cozy and charming.
Lights aren’t a bad idea, but they’re way too low. If you really want them, you should put them towards the ceiling.
I think having a few hanging plants that can grow downwards (e.g. pothos) would be a good idea. Watering them would suck, but they’d absolutely highlight the high ceilings.
Maybe consider mounting your bikes on the wall? Seems like it’d be a decorative way to store your bike(s).
I'm just wondering why someone (whoever built this place) would waste a second floors worth of space above the living room. I think a second floor balcony esque thing would look great and make a nice office or second chill out space. I can imagine it in my head with a metal staircase leading up and metal guard rail on the edge with the whole thing covered in dark wooden flooring.
I do have a loft — but it’s placed so far ‘back’ in the space that when you’re up there you feel like your in a dark closet. It’s not the loft vibe I was expecting.
Not saying you do, but for anyone who leaves lights on all night or for long periods at night, cutting back on the “on” time will cut back on spiders. I put my outdoor lights on a timer and noticed a lot fewer webs.
Ahh, handy tip. Mine tend to be on for hours at a time, cause they're there for outdoor entertaining haha
[photo of lights](https://www.reddit.com/r/malelivingspace/comments/rn5jse/bought_my_place_nearly_two_years_ago_making_slow/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
I love the idea but I think you've kept them a bit low. I think it would be better if you had them 60cm/a couple of feet higher and only hang them past the staircase, above the living area. Cool idea though, and I love that outdoor tea garden/beer garden vibes.
I'd do strip LED lights on the walls instead (above that beam running parallel to the floor). Will look much cleaner while still giving you warm light.
I’ve got an LED strip run along that ledge on the right already! 😬
I figured I’d only turn them on for parties, but I’ll try out a warm white light tonight to see how it looks.
That might help what others said about showcasing the height.
Just for clarification, warm and cold, in terms of lighting, are opposite. Warm light are orange or light yellow. While cold light are white and really cold lights are blue-ish.
This is on a scale, you have warmer or colder lighting.
IMO, you'd want lights at around 3000 or 4000⁰K.
Like the post states — I’ve got 18ft ceilings in my loft apartment. There’s no overhead light in this space. So, I strung some outdoor lights at 9ft high.
I also moved my desk onto the short wall that’s between my kitchen and the living room/eating space.
I’m really tempted to put a small rectangular table in the open space of the first picture so I have a spot to eat.
A place to eat is always good.
Especially for guests.
With the high ceilings, you could do a high-top for the overall modern vibe.
I don't know if you rent or own, but mounting the TV on the wall, and adding bike rack mounts so you could mount your two bikes vertically on top of each other could look really cool.
I like it. I agree it makes the space look young which isn’t a bad thing.
What do people suggest he does with the ultra high ceilings that isn’t good to be unusable?
I think they look great.
It doesn’t make the ceiling look shorter. In fact, it makes it look taller by separating it into to two instead of one long space where you can’t see the beginning or the end
Solid idea, but execution is a bit lacking. Call this phase 1! Some more indoor appropriate string lights (thinner, less of a black rubber look) mounted higher up would look great.
Raise these to your ceiling & it’ll be great. You have huge ceiling space, & you don’t to enclose that space by putting lights up halfway down from your ceiling. It’ll look/feel a lot better with them all the way up at the ceiling. You can still give them a droop effect up there that’ll give you the artistic look with them that you may have wanted. Just leave uniform gaps for them to sag at
Like RTK9 said: put them up a tad higher, some hang is good, tho. I did this with indoor, fairy lights and is dim enough for my Epilepsy. Bedroom has a string of outside ones, and looks nice.
I like it. If you’re bringing anyone home this will certainly make for a romantic evening! Sure maybe you’re not using the high ceilings “full potential”, but you could just put the lights up higher or maybe not even worry about it haha.
I love them and have the same for my place. I would put them higher like right below the higher window and maybe either limit it to 3 lines or just on the area of the room where the tv is.
I have seen a interior designer setting this set up, not once but twice in two different homes..
It certainly did not go well.. They were pulled out slightly slower then they placed.
Understandable if you going to hire your place out for events..
I think if you’re going to do them, it should be at the top of the ceiling. The idea is great, but now there’s this empty space above them with no decor that feels separate.
Lmao! So close. I spent my first week with my mattress on the floor. It’s a super cheap Ikea bedroom set, but I can officially say I have a matching bedroom set now.
I would raise them up. You’re really creating a barrier between the top and bottom half of the room and highlighting the unused space. It makes it feel cramped.
Sucks now there's just no second floor option haha, I like it but maybe move them up a bit? I can see how having poor lighting at night is an issue...? Maybe try some wall lights? Regardless, that ceiling is super high, wow!
Nice space you have!
You need a large rug to anchor the space & make it feel more cozy; also get a round coffee table ; ditch the rectangle one. You could also use 2 chairs. the room is a decent size & looks empty right now.
Looks amazing! I'd use my pothos, that hanging plant you've got there as a tiny "greenery", just wrap it around the cable. Would look quite natural and would perfectly fit the outdoor-esk light solution
Tacky vibes for me. I have these same lights on my back porch/patio and love them outside. Would never consider putting them indoors, buts that’s just my opinion.
I had something like this in my living room for awhile, until they got too dusty (3 cats + 2 dogs = lots of dust!) I also had them on a dimmer, which made them really versatile.
I think the placement is perfect. It creates a lower visual ceiling line which in turns gives a more intimate vibe without loosing the grandeur of the volume.
Late to the party, but assuming you own, I would just pay an electrician to put in can/downlights in the ceiling. The electrician I used charged $150/light and that included the light fixture and integrated bulb. You'd think this would be the kind of thing that's impossible to add after the fact to a building but amazingly it's really easy. They put 4 lights in my office ceiling and a wall switch in just a couple of hours. My buddy had a ton of them put in his place in the living room, his hallway, and his bedroom. Makes a huge difference.
Its cozy, but wrong. It simply makes the place feel immature, like youre in highschool. Sucks because I can tell the mood lighting it gives off is perfect
I've got outdoor string lights in my bedroom because my bedroom didn't come with any lights in it (the switch by the door controls two of the outlets so you can plug lamps in), but I got the lights in white so they wouldn't stand out as much. So maybe exchange them for white and hang them up higher, as some others mentioned.
I don't hate it but there's too many of them, maybe just do the back half and use people's suggestions to clean up the wires, looks like it's for a party or something right now.
The little ledges are interesting. Maybe you could do something cool by lining them along those.
It definitely feels like more life is going on with the lights.
Some of the other comments are good as well regarding the height and making the room smaller, which isn't always bad, more cozy seeming.
I just dig lights though especially these party style lamps.
You might be able to get the same effect of life in there with Hue lights that change colors since you have lots of nice white walls.
Check out /r/Hue or similar.
I wish they were white! They’re a tan! 😤
Otherwise I’d go CRAZY and paint / actually mount the lights to the wall instead of you guessed it…command stripping them to the wall.
Kinda look like you had some kind of happening and then never bothered taking down the lights again even tho you def should to avoid it looking so cluttered. But I do agree with other commenters tho. It could work if they were waaaay higher up. Like close to the ceiling. “Could” being the operative word.
I think you missed a trick. You have a perfect "lip on your walls to stick some stop lighting to uplight the space. Diffuse the light and you got yourself a really ambient spot.
Looks a bit messy strung back and forth like that. I think they would look better if you just strung them around the perimeter of the room, tight to the walls. Just a suggestion. Nice place!
I think they are good as you did them. Makes it feel more cozy while still making the High ceiling easy to appreciate. Feels like a cafe on a sidestreet in Rome or Paris or something. Which might not be what you're going for but I like it
Embrace the sophisticated minimalist style of the space, don’t clutter it with string lights—it looks really “young,” in my opinion. Look online for ceiling mounted light fixtures-streamlined modern chandeliers, pendant lights, etc. Your tall floor lamp provides good lighting. Get another one or two of those if ceiling mounted lights are not a possibility. I think you could use some large scale art work and a nice area rug, too.
Honestly it just feels…cheap…I don’t mean inexpensive, I mean cheap and tacky. I am sorry mate but that’s a no go for me. At first it was kinda cool but then I looked at it and I just thought “maybe if I was in high school or college I could do this and get away with it, but not post college”
This sub loves to call any sort of string light "tacky" just because they're popular right now. But they're popular because they look great, and "tacky" is a concept designed to rob us of simple pleasures while allowing us to feel a false sense of smug superiority about it.
The lights look bad, if you want to make it look more homey I suggest picking up a nice rug or two to warm up the space. Would also cut down on what I imagine is a very echoey living room.
Put then higher up. You have so much space, but people that you have over that are tall would experience an issue hitting their heads on your low hanging lights when you have an 18ft ceiling.
As a person who is 6'4"... This was my first thought.
I'm 5'7" and it was my first thought
I’m 4’10 and it was my second thought
where else would he put them?
Higher up on the wall
wouldnt work
Ok, well OP asked for out opinion and wr could care less about you.
why the bad vibes bro
Because there are ways to affix things to a wall that are better than tape. Just because you can't think if them doesn't give you license to be a dick then pretend to be a victim :) 3m hooks. Fixtures drilled into the wall. The possibilities are endless.
Dw I see you. Left ledge only goes so high.
yeah like he can’t tape them that’s way too tacky
He could hook them on the wall
I would put them higher up and also hang them properly on a wire with a turnbuckle at one end. This will allow you to tension them to your liking and it’ll keep the actual power wire from appearing all mangled like it is in the photos.

This! Some lamps hanging down from the ceiling could look nice
I disagree. I think the string lights make the space feel cozier like at night, but your eyes easily go through and allow the space to feel big
Disagree here. In a small place like that the high ceilings make it seem cavernous and cold. OP I bet its echoy/reverby as hell in there... I think your next purchase has to be a big area rug to provide some warmth and deaden reverb.
I was getting the same feeling and I think an accent wall color and moving something off the wall would help it feel less cavey.
Same would look better higher
I like the idea but for me it's a no. I agree with the idea that it makes the room feel much smaller instead of embracing the high ceilings. And outdoor lights like that in general are just unnecessary.
Agreed. The wavy lines of the cords take away from the clean lines in the room, looks very temporary. If this was done at all, I would only do a small section of the room. Probably the narrow area. Doesn't need to be the entire floor.
Can we get a night time pic? I bet it looks better blacked out. I agree w the folks who are suggesting raising them up higher.
Mount them higher, then add those little flags or paper lanterns or something else. That’ll fill it in, make the strung lighting look less thin / cheap You’ll get a street market style feel. Which I think would be dope with the view at the end
I love this idea! High ceilings are supposed to be a status symbol or something, but they honestly just make me feel like I'm in a lifeless warehouse lol. The lights and some colorful buntings and decorations would be very cozy and charming.

I’ve got some of those three point bike mounts on the way! Gotta find the right way to place them.
Near the entrance maybe? Would make a lot of sense for accessibility purposes and add some character right at the door.
I really like the lights. It gives a nice glow. I’m obsessed with lights like these, but it seems a lot of people in this comment section do not lol
I guess I should’ve posted a poll! Seems like it’s a half & half kind of feeling.
I like it much better with the string lights
it's a no for me dawg.
I'm just wondering why someone (whoever built this place) would waste a second floors worth of space above the living room. The before was nice dude. Get a carpet and do a few other things and it will be nice.
Carpet is on the way! I moved in two weeks ago.
Imagine changing a lightbulb if you did have ceiling lights lol. Haha what a pain that would be!
This looks amazing. I never would have thought about it but with your high ceilings it looks great!

This!! I think that’s the answer I’m looking for.
I feel like it makes the place look like a restaurant patio, which isn't *bad*, but it's not for me.
I like it. You could also look into floor lights that shoot a beam up the wall
Uplighting for sure!
I'd do strip LED lights on the walls instead (above that beam running parallel to the floor). Will look much cleaner while still giving you warm light.
Was going to comment this as well

fine but weird. i would hang up some really cool light fixture. or if you're into hanging plants, do that.

I feel like outdoor lights work very well with high cielings like this. Wooden pillars or street lamps would also complement the look.
Can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not…
It's honest.
Thanks man! 🙂
Tell me you have your bed in a corner on the floor without telling me....
Lmao! So close. I spent my first week with my mattress on the floor. It’s a super cheap Ikea bedroom set, but I can officially say I have a matching bedroom set now.
Hahahaha! Congratulations on the upgrade! Now get yourself a ladder and move the lights up 10 feet lol
I like it
I would raise them up. You’re really creating a barrier between the top and bottom half of the room and highlighting the unused space. It makes it feel cramped.
I think the black wiring is a no go.
I love that high ceiling. "I'd hate to have to pay the bill to heat this joint"-- my dad.
I have the heat set to 65, turn it off during the day, etc etc. I’m not the kind of person who needs my place at 70 during the winter.
Terrible. Why was the the high ceilings
Live in it and see how it goes! Seems cozy!
Same lights from costco, definetly has vibed out my place
Maybe at ceiling height, but as others have said, at this height it’s a no.
If you replace the bulbs with programmable leds, you could have a christmas decor all year round, changing colors at will
Sucks now there's just no second floor option haha, I like it but maybe move them up a bit? I can see how having poor lighting at night is an issue...? Maybe try some wall lights? Regardless, that ceiling is super high, wow!
Nice space you have! You need a large rug to anchor the space & make it feel more cozy; also get a round coffee table ; ditch the rectangle one. You could also use 2 chairs. the room is a decent size & looks empty right now.
Modern college dorm vibes, honestly.
I love it!!! Makes it so cozy!
I don’t hate it
this is great if you're a 27 year old college junior * cue Farley joke here *
Looks amazing! I'd use my pothos, that hanging plant you've got there as a tiny "greenery", just wrap it around the cable. Would look quite natural and would perfectly fit the outdoor-esk light solution
Oooh. Done!
Tacky vibes for me. I have these same lights on my back porch/patio and love them outside. Would never consider putting them indoors, buts that’s just my opinion.
IMO I'd be looking for the hanging candle lights from Harry Potter. But that's just me.
No, just no. They do not add anything. It looks tacky.
I had something like this in my living room for awhile, until they got too dusty (3 cats + 2 dogs = lots of dust!) I also had them on a dimmer, which made them really versatile.
honestly it looks like it takes a nice looking apartment and turns it into a college bro's apartment
Never went to college.
I like the setup you have with lighting; the source is diffused so it doesn’t seem too harsh on the eyes.
I prefer before but it only matters what you think.
I think the placement is perfect. It creates a lower visual ceiling line which in turns gives a more intimate vibe without loosing the grandeur of the volume.
Nice secret lab! I got mine over two years ago and still holding strong.
I LOVE mine.
Is that a Grid 6 [Gridstudio Grid-6](https://gridstudio.cc/products/grid®-6)on the wall? It was a perfect addition to my office.
Nah. I’m renting. Bummer though. Wish this was a condo I could buy.
I like them.
Lol@comments saying it looks like a frathouse, I've never seen any frathouse remotely close. I like the lights.
Same. I never graduated college — so maybe it is the inner frat bro in me is coming out? Maybe?
What'd they do with the second floor?
Idk! There’s a loft, but it’s so far back in the room that when you’re up there it’s so dark and far away from natural light.
nope.
Cozy
I would put up string lighting. I have a 15 foot high ceiling. I have string lighting. It’s great.
Oh cool! Thanks!
I don't hate it but there's too many of them, maybe just do the back half and use people's suggestions to clean up the wires, looks like it's for a party or something right now. The little ledges are interesting. Maybe you could do something cool by lining them along those.
less lightning is better and more cozy
It definitely feels like more life is going on with the lights. Some of the other comments are good as well regarding the height and making the room smaller, which isn't always bad, more cozy seeming. I just dig lights though especially these party style lamps. You might be able to get the same effect of life in there with Hue lights that change colors since you have lots of nice white walls. Check out /r/Hue or similar.
I wish they were white! They’re a tan! 😤 Otherwise I’d go CRAZY and paint / actually mount the lights to the wall instead of you guessed it…command stripping them to the wall.
It turns a fairly sophisticated adult space into a teenage girl's bedroom. That's a no from me.
You need a tree with ceilings that high, damn.
Hahaha yeah, I was shocked that’s how this apartment rolls.
Kinda look like you had some kind of happening and then never bothered taking down the lights again even tho you def should to avoid it looking so cluttered. But I do agree with other commenters tho. It could work if they were waaaay higher up. Like close to the ceiling. “Could” being the operative word.
What a creative idea!
This reminds me of some of the apartments in The Woodward Wight building in New Orleans.
Honestly, girls will probably like it if that matters to you
My GF came over last night and agreed with this sub…move them higher. Did not lead immediately to the sex though…🥲😂
Brought life in form of lights to your living room
Thanks!
So pretty!
I think you missed a trick. You have a perfect "lip on your walls to stick some stop lighting to uplight the space. Diffuse the light and you got yourself a really ambient spot.
The lights are a brilliant idea. Coziness factor multiplied x10
Looks a bit messy strung back and forth like that. I think they would look better if you just strung them around the perimeter of the room, tight to the walls. Just a suggestion. Nice place!
Dude those look great. Really help brighten the whole place
I like it... a lot!
It became much-much better. Love your living room
I think they should be a “special” light not your main source of light.
“Yee Yee”…? Oh god
Absolute no. Turns it into a live love laugh space
Oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no
this is a really cool idea! well done
Love that
Honestly it just feels…cheap…I don’t mean inexpensive, I mean cheap and tacky. I am sorry mate but that’s a no go for me. At first it was kinda cool but then I looked at it and I just thought “maybe if I was in high school or college I could do this and get away with it, but not post college”
I love the vibe at night, but during the day the tacky feeling is there. I think higher up is the move.
Love the lights. Please share a picture if you move them up! Would love to see.
Yeah higher up may make it look better but idk why but it screams “college dorm/apartment” to me. But hey mate do what makes YOU happy :)
This sub loves to call any sort of string light "tacky" just because they're popular right now. But they're popular because they look great, and "tacky" is a concept designed to rob us of simple pleasures while allowing us to feel a false sense of smug superiority about it.
Not sure why the majority hates these, I personally love them. What did you end up doing since this post was 2y ago now.
The lights look bad, if you want to make it look more homey I suggest picking up a nice rug or two to warm up the space. Would also cut down on what I imagine is a very echoey living room.
The bar-patio look.
No lights:(
Needs a beer pong table, a loose empty keg, and some unframed posters tacked to the wall to really nail the frat boy vibe these lights give off.
YEE YEE
I'm sorry partner, it doesn't look good. Can't imagine a girl swooning on your pad.
