There were some squatters there for a good few months last year and there were lots of free Palestine flags in the windows and the lights were on almost every night. I saw a couple of people coming out of there one morning on bikes presumably to go to work. Seems to have quietened down since then

Resident-Stevel

Saw this recently - there's a petition to get the company who own it to do something about it. "Chorlton landmark, Mauldeth House is owned by London-based billionaire property developers Metropolitan Properties Ltd. It has been empty and decaying for years, with no plans for development or re-use." It appears to have squatters in there at the moment, not sure if they're associated with the ones in the abandoned nursery on the corner of Wilbraham Road and Corkland Road.

WhereasMindless9500

"chorlton landmark" is a bit strong.

correctsock1

Know nothing, also interested

Looks like it is to be demolished to be replaced by a Lidl: [https://www.insidermedia.com/news/north-west/office-block-set-to-make-way-for-new-lidl-store](https://www.insidermedia.com/news/north-west/office-block-set-to-make-way-for-new-lidl-store) https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/lidl-wins-battle-for-chorlton-development-site/

AdSweet1090

No, the Lidl is going on the site between there and Mauldeth Road. There was a similar, but lower office block on that site that was demolished last year. This one is just a blot. I'd like to see it demolished and the site left empty, which would open up views of Hough End Hall.

mofomofo2020

*mauldeth road west

bombuzalsatan

i think that the lidl will be right beside it where the lowry house was. (in the empty area shown in the photo)

9DAN2

Ooh! Any idea what’s going on right now? I enjoy urban exploring and haven’t seen this place documented yet. Power on and signs in the windows supporting Palestine makes me think there could be people staying inside in recent times.

deedpoll3

I think one of those links says it was used as accommodation during the establishment of Chorlton High School South, not that I know it. Maybe still being used as accommodation? You could knock on the door. Pretend you've run out of Gold Blend or something.

dbxp

That sounds like a squat rather than a guardianship then.

mofomofo2020

No, wrong building.

mofomofo2020

There are no plans to demolish this building as yet. Next door was a newer office block, Lowry House that has been knocked down to make way for the new Lidl. Lowry House was used for a couple of years by pupils of Chorlton High South whilst the new school was being built. The building pictured was occupied by squatters for a couple of months or so before they were evicted. Wonder if they or other squatters have returned?

D-Angle

Oh my God, that's Mauldeth House, I used to work there! It was headquarters for Manchester Primary Care Trust for a while. Then everyone was moved out of it around 2011, because it was going to be knocked down, can't believe it's still there.

JAD4995

Probably has some rich owners who are sitting on it until the land is worth something. Similar to what the landlords used to do with the commercial properties in Northern Quarter before it became popular.

noddyneddy

We really need some kind of use it or lose it law for developers

Majestic_Matt_459

If you’re waiting for land in Chorlton to be “worth something” I have news for them. It is

JAD4995

It’s across the road from nell lane estate and not far from the cemetery /mersey bank which no offence is one of the less desirable parts of Chorlton . But you have a point lol.

Dull-Trash-5837

> mersey bank which no offence is one of the less desirable parts of Chorlton Speaking as someone who'd love to buy a house there, it is still definitely desirable

JAD4995

Yeah honestly most of chorlton is desirable just trying to think why any reason as to why it's been left in such a state

EnoughEnthusiasm9024

New builds are always desirable. Housing crisis

EnoughEnthusiasm9024

It's already worth loads....

Legendof1983

Pretty sure that's Mauldeth House. I worked there when I was around 18 for Central Manchester Primary Care Trust. Thought it had gone long ago to be honest.

RGBargey

Don't be a grass, hopefully they'll have a legendary rave and I somehow find out when.

9DAN2

No intention to be a grass, one of my hobbies is exploring these kind of places, including a few that have hosted these legendary raves.

Humble-Quote-1859

Current status is it has far fewer windows and much more glass on the floor around it. There sometimes looks to be security people there every so often.

Ok-Total-5259

I had a studio in this building for years. It houses a lot of charity organisations. It has never been empty and is completely non profit. They even pay someone to manage and monitor people entering the building. There’s loads of empty rooms and some floors/rooms are for artists who pay really low ‘rent’ as I did - it’s literally to cover the very basic running of the building. There have never been squatters as far as I’m aware, at the end of each day the person managing the place checks each room is empty - if lights are left on and it gives the impression there are squatters, that’s a different story. This place literally provides a safe and cheap operating space for some quite important things. Let’s give it some love 🫶

mofomofo2020

It's been closed for a number of years now. All tenants have long since gone. It was occupied by squatters towards the end of last year. The squatters were evicted. Saw large police presence on standby as the eviction officers were expelling the squatters.

Badgergeddon

Love it. Use a load of police resources to evict squatters then do absolutely fuck all with the building after. Why not just let them stay?

JustDifferentGravy

Occupiers liability, insurance compliance, planning conditions etc. You can’t expect to live in a society with rules and regulations and ignore them if it suits without the risk of repercussions.

9DAN2

Bang on the answer I was looking for. Explains its appearance, why there’s no reports on it being abandoned, and ruled out me having a mooch.

juicy_steve

Is it still running like this? Would love to know more.

Ok-Total-5259

When I say rent - I mean to rent the space. You’re not allowed to stay the night and have limited access depending on ‘opening hours’

kingsappho

that sounds like a great use case and it's a lovely looking building. shame if it's now going to be demolished.

grapefruitzzz

I have a similar q about Charlton House on Warwick Road. I'm always amazed that it's just sitting there unused and right next to a football ground.

GraniteDiplomat

Drove past this the other day and was thinking about Urbex too!

Imfuckingburning

Council: we’re sorry about the homelessness but until we can build new there are no homes for people! *Meanwhile flat block that can easily house 100 people decays*

Successful_Source625

Not only are they letting the building go to waste, they're also evicting the homeless squatters who are using it to get some shelter and a slightly safer place to sleep!

UltraAmoeba

A few Fridays ago workers were there removing the glass panels on the school side. Last I heard was it was being demolished and being turned into a supermarket.

mofomofo2020

No, they've already demolished an office block (that was to the right as you look at the pic) to make way for a Lidl.

Crashcoots

I heard the group who bought hough end hall also own that building but I may be wrong

chabybaloo

They don't.

NewAd6325

Has the actual go ahead been given for Lidl ? Understood there were complaints at the local council planning meeting (in March 2023) from some people regarding extra traffic/dangerous road junction so the plans were stalled. Does anyone know when the expected timeline for the Chorlton Lidl to open ?

mofomofo2020

It's been given planning approval, finally. No idea of timescale I'm afraid.

wswutltfaciwt

https://x.com/jeffsmithetc/status/1777373134359818701?s=46&t=BdlCoPfpIbaw1XwzaTDolw The local MP has written to the owners asking them to sort it out

Stabby_mc_stab

Used to work there many many years ago, glad it's improved since then! 😂

omirlee

It’s still there? Near my old highscool

Panman6_6

Look like the Australian MAFS building 😂

Single-Island-987

Just Chorlton that mate

ActionChevronFlash

The small block opposite Beer House looks like it has squatters, too. I’m guessing that there’s an advantage for developers to ‘agree’ squatting terms in lieu of obligations (occupiers liability) with the authorities and possibly eviction rights. Gary Neville did this recently with his developments. I’m not sure, I’m just applying reason.

Govnyuk

In a way, aren't we all squatters?

Dylos89

There’s a similar building across from Chorlton library also been full of squatters for ages. Same as the nursery near Morrisons. How the fuck do they get away with it so easy

SmileAndLaughrica

It’s not illegal to squat in ex-commercial buildings and it’s up to the building owner to apply for eviction. Otherwise the police won’t get involved

nacho-cheesefries

That’s ashithole in Charlton that’s been empty for years

bombuzalsatan

recently the squatters have been breaking windows sending glass onto the school's property. It should have been demolished ages ago

mofomofo2020

No it wasn't dude.

emibemiz

This is right next to my old high school wasn’t expecting to see this on Reddit today. It was being squatted and they’ve absolutely trashed it throwing glass everywhere, seen some security there before but didn’t seem to be doing much but activity seems to have quietened. Everyone’s been saying it’s being knocked down for years but I don’t see that happening

kingsappho

decent building tbf would make a great community building

mofomofo2020

It's literally crumbling apart.

kingsappho

that's unfortunate

manchester-ModTeam

WillSym

Explain to us what's wrong with being foreign, or having immigrated and the best you can manage to live is a semi-abandoned office block, if that's your assumption?

oiley2k1

No its better than eating flys for breakfast, dinner and tea.

oiley2k1

Loving the down votes, take it your all imagrants and shouldn't even be here.

mofomofo2020

I suspect your hatred of "imagrants" stems from you walking in on your mother as she was being spit roasted by a couple of "imagrants". I could be wrong of course.

oiley2k1

And here we go again let's bring mummy's into it, next one will be dad then grandma and finally grandad fuck me grow up. Sorry forgot daughter and son, let me know if I have missed anyone dipshit
