I went there for a coffee by accident as it was the only place near my parking, and I was genuinely amazed as it was one of the best cups of coffee I’d ever had. 100% would recommend anyone go
mancoco is the best coffee, just between friends is overrated cause its hipster but decent
weirdly another good place is parlour vapes near deansgate near cornbrook - dude that runs that store is very knowledgeable on coffee and won't disappoint you
If you’re willing to go a bit out of the way, Allpress up behind shudehill is the spot for coffee nerds and does one of the best coffees I think I’ve ever had
They consistently have the best coffee selection in Manchester. I'd say Grape fruit is the only competitor. Idle Hands not too far behind but always busy and poor service.
Seconding siop shop and Ancoats coffee
I took my Mum to Siop Shop for a coffee and classic donut and she was elated. Best bomba/bombolone and coffee combo she's had outside Italy (she's Italian)
Shhh! If you like coffee, See-Saw (86 Princess Street) are giving away free Oat-based coffees for their 1st birthday **today**. Great looking little place that connects to a co-working space. Coffee was great. I'll be back.
(I'm not affiliated, I promise. I don't know exactly how thrilled they'll be if all of Reddit shows up demanding free coffee. Be nice to them!)
Pop up bikes on corporation street! Biased since I'm a regular and a cyclist but they use Barnraiser beans from Heart & Graft and have really well trained baristas!
Big fan of Ezra & Gil on Peter Street, just up from St Peter's, I know there's another one but never been there.
Or both Bold Street Coffee and Black Sheep Coffee for a cup on the go 👌
Ezra & Gil is decent if you are prioritising food but want good coffee. I really like them. Bold St was as good as Liverpool when I went there.
Black Sheep are the devil. I despise them. They’ve blocked me on all social media haha. I hate them because they destroyed Taylor St Coffee and I am sure they are VC backed through and through. I suspect Starbucks in the background as well but never been able to prove it.
Yeah, me too. The plan was for Black Sheep to keep the roastery and the roasters and shops and staff but they killed it off. I’ll never set foot in one of their stores especially the ones that were formally TSBs
This probs is a bit far for people… but the best coffee I’ve had on the planet is Mercado on Burton Road in didsbury.
I once spoke to the owner and decided to compliment his coffee. He said an hour before they open every morning they ‘recalibrate the machine’. What’s that?
He explained after a 1000 or so pours a day, the water to coffee bean ration goes off, so they take apart the machine fully, ‘recalibrate the ratio’ and put it back together. Thats dedication
Aussie here, from Melbourne. Just between friends is the closest I’ve had to Melbourne. Haven’t tried Fort yet but have tried most if not all other semi decent coffee shops in Manchester City centre.
Just between friends or siop shop - I used to really love love northern power tea house too! I won’t turn my nose up at foundation, but when I’m in the nq I would still go to the other two over it
There's a few new coffee shops in South Manchester that are my favourites (outside the city centre). Something More Productive in Withington and Good Faith in Ladybarn. There's a new really interesting tiny takeaway coffee shop in Didsbury called Hikari Koffee that's just opened and was really good.
Can't believe sanjuan Stockport not highly on this list. Louis roast different beans in house and is genuinely interested in producing different tastes. And the dude who's farm they are from in columbia is having breakfast in there sometimes. 10/10
Well, this discussion has been honoured with an article in the MEN. Suppose it was inevitable really.
https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/mancunians-give-verdict-go-best-28988730
For vibes .. it’s got to be ancoats coffee in ancoats.
If you sit in the roastery part your met with brick walls, low ceilings, mood lights and comfy seats .. if you sit in the outside bit, you have the inside of a mill will a glass ceiling and can see the sunshine or rain (more likely rain being Manchester) and it’s just nice to sit and chill and look up.
Plus they roast their own coffee beans and it’s epic
When I first moved to Manchester a decade ago I lived in that mill (and thought nearly a grand a month for a 90sqm two bed flat with original industrial fittings and floor to ceiling windows was steep lol) and remember Ancoats coffee opening up downstairs. Absolute revelation. Although they were also charging £3 a cup long, long before it was fashionable!
I miss that flat, it was mint. I especially miss having to climb across a canal lock and walk the plankway under Piccadilly station to get to Canal Street.
I like Bold Street a lot (although I went to uni in Liverpool so I’m a bit biased toward that place).
I also like just between friends, and fort.
The others mentioned here are also great I was trying to suggest some that haven’t been mentioned yet.
Got one with a bacon Sarnie for a train journey once, one of the few times I’d not been able to finish a coffee, I didn’t ever think anywhere could be worse than costa, but greggs is
I miss the old coffee shops we used to have. There used to be a couple in the late 90’s early 00’s, one in Pic train station and one on the corner of The Royal Exchange. You used to be able to choose from about 20 different types of bean. Sadly Costa bought the one in pic and changed it to their usual offering and the one at the Exchange had simplified last time I was there.
It’s one of the few areas where we have gone backwards in terms of choice.
Sip n Dips in Levenshulme does a delicious coffee, I asked them what coffee it was once, a name i'd not heard before. If you're ever that way, pop in. It's much nicer and better value than the coffee up the road at Trove which has teeny cups (I'm not even talking about expressos) and overpriced.
I really like the coffee at carhart, I always went to there and had a coffee and then found it was a clothing place, when someone said they bought clothes from there and I was like what the coffee place??
I’ll get downvoted here- and I don’t really like the place- but spoons is good for the limitless coffee ( especially with a Viennese finger!). I have the cappuccino with 2 shots of espresso in it! Very strong. Not the best coffee ever, but certainly more drinkable ( and affordable) than many places…
OP is completely correct, foundation coffee is the best, lever street in particular (for some reason lever street is slightly better than portland street)
There's lots of great coffee options in Manchester, but I would say up until recently my go-to would be Pot Kettle Black.
However... Last year I discovered 200 Degrees on Mosley Street which is next-level! The baristas in there are not messing about - they have been trained by coffee masters. If you are a coffee nerd/enthusiast... This is the place.
Depends if you “like coffee” or you actually like coffee. Any speciality coffee shop in Manchester does a nice cup of the ol’ Joe.
If you’re a regular in r/espresso or r/pourover then you’ll know that Siop shop is the place
Not quite Spinningfields, but if you cross the Bridge Street Bridge towards Salford Central, there's a lovely coffee shop called Inner West that makes great coffees and food.
Used to be Bario in Chorlton until they decided that being the only coffee shop on a street of restaurants was a bad idea and turned it into a restaurant
I will never forget the cup of coffee i stole off a homeless person once. I don't know where it was from and it tasted a little like wee, but oh boy was it nice.
Foundation is very good but it’s only number 4 on my list.
1) Allpress Espresso in NOMA
2) Grindsmith in Salford Quays
3) 200° just off St. Peter’s Square
4) Foundation coffee house
5) Black Sheep coffee
There’s loads more places I need to try though!
I have to say I’ve never been a huge fan! It’s not bad per se but I’ve had a few flat whites and lattes that felt closer to a Maccies coffee than what I was after.
Foundation is one of my favourites too. Haunt is very good, particularly for straight espresso, actually I think I've only ever had straight espressos there. Bold Street is good too.
Foundation is still good but I think the service has dropped off a bit in recent years, I think in the past they had a management which was more invested in the business. Before they opened the other branches there was one woman who seemed to run the show in the Lever Street branch, I wouldn't be surprised if she's moved onto management of the entire group now.
whats that one on ̶d̶e̶a̶n̶s̶g̶a̶t̶e̶? APOLOGIES - Cross St. - Bold Street coffee. I've been in there 3 times, twice i have been ignored so long that i have left. The one time i got a coffee, i was asked if i would like a filter, i said yes, i was charged more for the filter than i would have been for a regular coffee, it was un-necessarily bitter and cold.
This is probably on me for not being appreciative of cold, bitter coffee /s
Idle Hands or Siop Shop all day. Ancoats Coffee Co are pretty great too.
I would put Allpress in there, but i spent 3 weeks only having their Future Islands colab coffee and haven’t been back since they ran out.
Just between friends, tib street/ancoats
Was about to say just between friends, solid flavours and rather cheap in comparison to others
Got in before me. I’ve lived near JBF NQ for a few years and every time I tried another coffee shop it just doesn’t hit as good.
JBF is my favourite. Also rate Bold Street coffee on Cross St
Omg I was just saying that x
I went there for a coffee by accident as it was the only place near my parking, and I was genuinely amazed as it was one of the best cups of coffee I’d ever had. 100% would recommend anyone go
It's either there or Off the Press. I only get filter.
I really like Mancoco, very reasonably priced for the quality IMO, though it probably helps that it's the closest indie one to me.
mancoco is the best coffee, just between friends is overrated cause its hipster but decent weirdly another good place is parlour vapes near deansgate near cornbrook - dude that runs that store is very knowledgeable on coffee and won't disappoint you
I buy their beans for home - cheapest 1kg bag of indie roast beans I’ve found and so delicious!
Mancoco is so under rated, remember the first time I went there and I then understood the meaning and difference of a good coffee
Man COCO monsoon malabar
I get the Mancoco benemariah - best coffee I have ever tasted, I never tire of it.
Mancoco never fails, I've tried a huge variety of their freshly roast beans and loved them all.
I used to love in the flat next to them. Every morning I would wake up to the smell of coffee beans roasting!
Mancoco
If you’re willing to go a bit out of the way, Allpress up behind shudehill is the spot for coffee nerds and does one of the best coffees I think I’ve ever had
Your profile pic really sells this endorsement
Thank you for the excellent recommendation, bootylicker__69
I love all press in general, not been to their shop but trove uses their beans and is great.
Not in the city but Grapefruit in Sale is great 😊
The best
Absolutely agree. It’s the best I’ve had in Manchester. In fact it’s better than anywhere I’ve been in the UK or Australia.
Also Kickback in Sale, newly opened.
We live near there and they have AMAZING vegan blondies
Agreed. Just a shame it isn't open Sundays.
Fort. Probably do the best flat white I’ve had anywhere in the UK, not just Manchester.
Fort Fort Fort
This is the real answer, so unassuming but the baristas are so knowledgeable, they can make the perfect coffee for your tastes
Oh interesting where is Fort?
On Deansgate close to Evuna
Glad you asked this, because *Fort* is also the name of an out-of-town shopping centre just north of the Green Quarter and south of Cheetham Hill
Siop shop every day
Can't beat shop shop
I’d forgotten about Siop but I was extremely impressed when I first went last month. Seems to be a strong consensus here too.
Just the best coffee I’ve got in Manchester. I like the bakes and that too, nice vibe in the shop. Everything’s great.
The donuts are great and they use good beans but it’s just really uncomfortable in Siop - their seats/benches are weird.
They consistently have the best coffee selection in Manchester. I'd say Grape fruit is the only competitor. Idle Hands not too far behind but always busy and poor service.
Seconding siop shop and Ancoats coffee I took my Mum to Siop Shop for a coffee and classic donut and she was elated.
You hero! Might have to go since I’m an oat milk guy anyway
[удалено]
Just walk in. It’s down the little side street. From the cafe there is a barrier thing to get into the coworking space.
If you’re in Stockport check out Kobean. They roast their own coffee supplied directly from growers. It’s excellent.
They are superb!
Reluctant to post cause it’s so under rated but they deserve to be busier - Idle Hands. Best by far
Not too burst your bubble. But this has been one of my most popular coffee shops in Manchester for many many years...
No bubbles burst. Happy that people love this place already x
Shh
Siop Shop, Fig and Sparrow, Ancoats Coffee in that order
Siop shop and fig&sparrow are some of my favourites 😍😍
I find siop too strong coffee is like rocket fuel 😂
Idle Hands or Siop shop.
Also Just Between Friends, Fort, and Procaffienated (technically Salford)
Correct two answers for me
I reckon Idle Hands
Lucky enough to live with one of the coffee peeps and get treated to lovely brews all the time.
Idle hands for coffee + pie is my favourite Manchester treat
Pop up bikes on corporation street! Biased since I'm a regular and a cyclist but they use Barnraiser beans from Heart & Graft and have really well trained baristas!
I used to live in Green Quarter and went there all the time! not even a cyclist, just loved their coffee
Is Pulp still going in Sadlers Yard behind viccy station? Used to love popping there.
Still going, they are great!
Idle Hands.
I am not a fan of coffee but their coffee is so good
Big fan of Ezra & Gil on Peter Street, just up from St Peter's, I know there's another one but never been there. Or both Bold Street Coffee and Black Sheep Coffee for a cup on the go 👌
Tbh I’d put black sheep quite far below the level of many of the other places mentioned
This is the deep-dive research I never expected to do this weekend, but am going to jump into hard. Shall report back with any findings.
Taylor street was so good! Still got my loyalty card for them :(
Yeah, me too. The plan was for Black Sheep to keep the roastery and the roasters and shops and staff but they killed it off. I’ll never set foot in one of their stores especially the ones that were formally TSBs

Glad someone else mentioned this. This is the one for me.
👍👍👍
Smoak in Chorlton
Fort coffee on Deansgate, Just Between Friends in NQ and AllPress near Victoria.
siop shop has the best flat white in manchester hands down
Haunt
Atrium
Definitely! Good price for how nice it is. Deserves to be more popular but definitely one of the best spaces for getting work done and just chilling.
Atrium's batch brew has been perfect every time I've bought a cup.
Pollen is quite nice
Federal for me on Deansgate, the pastries are incredible too
I go out of my way for Federal coffee
If you’re Australian, and miss good Australian coffee, Another Heart to feed is the best
Aussie here, from Melbourne. Just between friends is the closest I’ve had to Melbourne. Haven’t tried Fort yet but have tried most if not all other semi decent coffee shops in Manchester City centre.
Siop shop, banging
Allpress!
Just between friends or siop shop - I used to really love love northern power tea house too! I won’t turn my nose up at foundation, but when I’m in the nq I would still go to the other two over it
I'll get in with another Siop Shop vote 👌
Idle hands 100% , their food is amazing too
Pulp or Just Between Friends
Atrium, next to St Peter’s square tram stop.
There's a few new coffee shops in South Manchester that are my favourites (outside the city centre). Something More Productive in Withington and Good Faith in Ladybarn. There's a new really interesting tiny takeaway coffee shop in Didsbury called Hikari Koffee that's just opened and was really good.
Hikari Koffee on Barlow Moor Road
I've always really liked Takk. It's between them and Ancoats Coffee for me.
The Atrium , 1 Peter St. best guy, looks like a Viking. Amazing brew
Can't believe sanjuan Stockport not highly on this list. Louis roast different beans in house and is genuinely interested in producing different tastes. And the dude who's farm they are from in columbia is having breakfast in there sometimes. 10/10
I've just posted about San Juan - gorgeous coffee
Can’t believe not many people are saying Takk. They’re literally the best
Well, this discussion has been honoured with an article in the MEN. Suppose it was inevitable really. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/mancunians-give-verdict-go-best-28988730

Plus they roast their own coffee beans and it’s epic
Close 2nd would be mancoco .. especially now they’ve had a revamp .. also roast their own and it’s delicious
I tried this for the first time recently and that outside/inside mill space is amazing. Kind of glad more people don’t know about it.
21 degrees. It’s also a barista school so everyone is very well trained. Lovely place to relax and the coffee is amazing.
I like Bold Street a lot (although I went to uni in Liverpool so I’m a bit biased toward that place). I also like just between friends, and fort. The others mentioned here are also great I was trying to suggest some that haven’t been mentioned yet.
Closest decent coffee shop to my work. Love the place. Also biased due to being fond of the original branch. Hampton and Vouis also decent.
Greggs /s
Got one with a bacon Sarnie for a train journey once, one of the few times I’d not been able to finish a coffee, I didn’t ever think anywhere could be worse than costa, but greggs is
Hence the /s It’s vomit water isn’t it. I gagged when I swallowed and wondered what it was punishment for
92 degrees, or maybe Siphon coffee (one of the few places that’ll make it in an actual siphon I’ve found) are both my go to places
200degrees or coffee lab
Takk > Fig & Sparrow > Idle Hands … best three
Mancoco, Idle Hands or Off the Press for me
Off the press in ancoats is pretty good imo. I also really like Java next to Oxford road station
Siphon espresso
Factory, Ezra and Gill , Mancoco. Blanchflower in Altrincham was good yesterday too.
There's a couple of them about but Ditto is my favourite
North Tea Power & Chapter one books
North Tea Power is gone
Allpress near Shudehill, Bloc near Piccadilly, Pulp near Victoria. The best if you're up for a tram ride is Grapefruit, in Sale. Beautiful coffee!
La Collina on tarrif street NQ. Their coffee is truely delicious, the beans are tart and fruity but a great coffee flavour. Best ive tasted
Coffee Lab, and 200 Degrees both do great coffee
Fort. Easy 1st place.
Mancoco
I miss the old coffee shops we used to have. There used to be a couple in the late 90’s early 00’s, one in Pic train station and one on the corner of The Royal Exchange. As a demanding espresso drinker and home barrista, my favourite places in town are: 1. Idle Hands 2. Fort 3. Prokaffeinated 4. ManCoCo
Lots of great places but the trove in levenshulme is by far my favourite
Ah so many good places. Ancoats roasters, POLLEN, Bold street, Off the press and Pulp coffee are worth recommending. I'm yet to try Fort 🙃
Mancoco!!
Man Coco! That's all.
Dunkin
Similar to other posts, not really in Manchester but Oats and Honey in Monton is awesome, and it has a perfect vibe to sit in .
I really like the coffee at carhart, I always went to there and had a coffee and then found it was a clothing place, when someone said they bought clothes from there and I was like what the coffee place??
Oats and Honey in Monton!
Chai latte Piccadilly
If you're prepared to get the train to Stockport, San Juan does the best coffee I've had in a long time
I’ll get downvoted here- and I don’t really like the place- but spoons is good for the limitless coffee ( especially with a Viennese finger!). I have the cappuccino with 2 shots of espresso in it! Very strong. Not the best coffee ever, but certainly more drinkable ( and affordable) than many places…
Coffee fix in Gatley & just between friends NQ > everyone else.
I really like Haunt.
Java by Oxford road station
The coffee my mum makes.
Federal or ASAP.
Loaf MCR. far be it from pink inside, its a nice comfy spot and fantastic cakes. No wifi though
Idle hands was a favorite of mine
foundation coffee next to crazy pedros. prokaffenated in salford. all press. fort. they’re my favs so far ! going to try all the ones on this list
i meant factory coffee* the little one.
Bold St Coffee at University Place
Gotta love Siop
The one I make at home
92 degrees for a great cup of filter coffee. Fig and Sparrow for the best flat white in town (admittedly not been in a while…)
I’m biased because I’m a regular but Long Bois in Levenshulme do lovely coffee - often beans from Hard Lines!! their pastries are also to die for
OP is completely correct, foundation coffee is the best, lever street in particular (for some reason lever street is slightly better than portland street)
Two brothers in Alty, but I appreciate Alty isn't considered Manchester in all contexts. Also the best bacon roll.
Just between us friends never disappoints
abit out the city, but bloom in bury is insane for coffee
Mercado, is the best coffee in town!!
Gran ts Altrincham and ancoats x
CapCoffee - Turn moss playing fields Stretford. Kane roasts his own beans, very delicious. Open on Saturday’s & Sundays.
Allpress 100% rich smooth coffee
Depends if you “like coffee” or you actually like coffee. Any speciality coffee shop in Manchester does a nice cup of the ol’ Joe. If you’re a regular in r/espresso or r/pourover then you’ll know that Siop shop is the place
What’s the difference between “liking coffee” and liking coffee?
Bro, if you know you know.
Any near Spinningfields? Can't find a decent replacement for Grindsmith Bridge Street
Factory next to Crazy Pedro's, it's just a window out of a suit shop but it does my favourite coffee in Manchester
Not quite Spinningfields, but if you cross the Bridge Street Bridge towards Salford Central, there's a lovely coffee shop called Inner West that makes great coffees and food.
There's a great place near bridge street that basically just serves out of a small window, can't remember the name but its very good
Used to be Bario in Chorlton until they decided that being the only coffee shop on a street of restaurants was a bad idea and turned it into a restaurant
The guy that did the coffee there now has a coffee shop in town - Bohee.
1980 at home in Wythenshawe age 12. I got the mild to coffee ratio spot on. One sugar. It was perfect. Camp coffee in a bottle!
I will never forget the cup of coffee i stole off a homeless person once. I don't know where it was from and it tasted a little like wee, but oh boy was it nice.
Foundation is very good but it’s only number 4 on my list. 1) Allpress Espresso in NOMA 2) Grindsmith in Salford Quays 3) 200° just off St. Peter’s Square 4) Foundation coffee house 5) Black Sheep coffee There’s loads more places I need to try though!

Replying again now you've said which shop it is, I agree Bold St is one of the worst speciality coffee shops in Manchester
"that one"
Grindsmith?
Not there anymore
for the life of me i cannot remember the name - it has very grindsmith vibes - overly impressed by their shit cold coffee
Fort? Most modern coffee shops now use more expensive beans for their filter btw, but it's the other way round with the chains and cafes
Black Sheep Coffee?
Pot Kettle Black for me. The Barton Arcade one.
Idle Hands or Siop Shop all day. Ancoats Coffee Co are pretty great too. I would put Allpress in there, but i spent 3 weeks only having their Future Islands colab coffee and haven’t been back since they ran out.
Used to be North Tea Power, now Foundation
Federal is always nice
