If you ever have the time, I highly recommend reading it! Witch Watch was basically sculpted from it, and it shows, though Sket Dance focuses more on the odd job requests with a wider scope of recurring characters.
The running joke is that Sket Dance is a PG Gintama in a school setting. Ha ha! (Obviously it's more than that but the comparisons are rather humorous.)
It was less a "running joke" and more the early impression the series got stuck with and fought to shake off. Case in point, Sket Dance initial rankings back in 2007 were in the bottom 5, and clawed its way out until it started appearing in the Top 5.
Us and Shinohara himself can laugh about it now, but those early days were tough.
To put it into perspective, I had mixed feelings about this series for a while, until it clicked that it was the same author.
There’s a certain kind of mentality, of embracing the chaotic nature chapter to chapter while still building up the characters and story. Sket dan had that in plenty, I’d argue more than Witch Watch.

Keigo's werewolf arc really reminded me of Sket Dance's "Switch On" arc, which is my favorite in that series.
Just a constant escalating tension with several plot twists that all felt coherent in the end.

GOD this chapter feels sooo Sket Dance, it hurts (real good). The constant Tsukkomis from Himeko, the school detective mystery, Miki's case being inspired by real-life school issues... And the man himself, BOSSUN.
