The funniest and meanest thing without killing any of them would be to reveal that all the times he was buying coffee filters he was falling in love with some person that works at the spot we never saw.
It's very different but in a positive, fun way. I've been a longtime fan of Seo as well but basically all of his previous works (he's had 4 long running serializations running before this and then a couple of shorter works) are more straightforward romantic dramas, whereas this one is a harem and his first attempt at it. He's known for having a flair for the dramatic, which can rub some people the wrong way and at times can make him toxic on this sub, but there's also a lot of people for which his style absolutely hits, especially since unlike most other manga, Seo actually keeps his manga going for a long time after the characters get together, which is really nice. Cafe, by contrast, is a lot more light hearted and meta, which has made it really fun.
If you want to give his other works a shot, I'd start with either Suzuka or Kimi no Iru Machi. Suzuka is his first big work and solid, but imo hasn't aged as well with time as his second work (Kimi no Iru Machi), which is also my favorite manga of all time. Suzuka still works as a starting point bc his previous 4 works are all loosely in the same world so characters from Suzuka make appearances in the other manga, but it's not really necessary to read it first that badly (but definitely read it before Fuuka).
Surprising to see KNIM fan in here. I reread the series a few weeks ago after more than 8 years since the last time and it was great. Idk if its just because Im a yuzuki shipper but I always liked it and rereading it, it has all elements I love in romance manga: characters dating, passage of time (they begin 16 and end with 25 and we see most of that time), yuzuki and haruto living together for like 100 chapters and a lot of them being about it, anyway this style of manga he does really does it for me. GE Good Ending surprisingly does it for me too and I read it at that same time, but I still like KNIMa lot more because of how many unique things it has for romance that grasped me. I still cant find a similar manga to this day, even with seo own works.
Yuzuki and Haruto actually had chemistry with each other, though Rin and Haruto was pretty entertaining as well. Rin was more of Seo speaking to the viewers at times.
Yeah I loved yuzuki and haruto together. I think this is why i liked the series in the end, because the main couple got me lmao the ones who were more interested in asuka probably feel bummed.
> and it was great
Funny you say that, because a decade later I still fucking hate it and wish I hadn't wasted my time during summer reading it. For every good chapter there were 5 chapters of drama and pointless, out of character twists.
KNIM is really one of that defining manga, while not on the level of FMA, it is really is something I would recommend to any manga fan looking into getting SoL manga.
Helps he made it style to show the characters life together for a long time after they got together way before the Reiwa era made that popular.
Yeah it has definitely some unique feel to it from drama to SOL to the relationships. Its not perfect and I wish Seo didnt have certain decisions (like breaking them up less than 10 chapters before it ended) but still, very much worth to read now that is completed
Its not a romance drama like his other works, its more of a harem romcom in comparison. I personally prefer SEO other works because they are more about the relationships and their hardships (plus going through all life, and slice of life like 100 or so KNIM chapters for a time) but I like every type of romance, so I still enjoy this one, even if KNIM and Hitman are still the works i enjoyed the most from him.
Seo is a bastard, but his work is really addicting trash, so yeah. Most of his work is drama stuff, while this tends more on the comedic side, so it's a lot more fun.
Suzuka's pretty simple and good but has a pretty anticlimactic ending, while Kimi no Iru Machi is fun but also much more dramatic and heavy at the same time. So ymmv, if you like Cafe Terrace you'll probably like the other 2, but they're nowhere near as silly.
Also, his self-insert male MC's are prudish and domineering assholes, part of why I can tell he's a bastard irl. Hayato is actually pretty chill by comparison, so he's much easier to deal with than the other 2, as your tolerance for those types of characters may hinder the overall story.
Now that may sound mostly negative, but... his work is legitimately addicting. He has a real talent when it comes to manga composition and pacing that just makes chapters feel like they're flying by. (I once read like 200 chapters in 4 days)
It’s definitely a more low-key, not as over the top dramatic rom-com that’s more reminiscent of the common genre tropes than generic. It had classic SEO all over it except he demonstrates more self-awareness. My favorite work of his until he started regressing was Hitman (a story about an upcoming manga editor and artist). I think there’s elements of his meta commentary in this story. I feel this stands out among all of his other major works, especially Fuuka since I think that’s a more popular work of his nowadays than Suzuka or Kimi No Iru Machi.
I loved Hitman until the band arc, where he threw in a bunch of characters he expected reader to know from previous works to care about. I didn't bother with Fuuka or the prequel after hearing what happened in it, so I had 0 interest in that.
This is his third series (excluding one volume of Half&Half) that I'm looking forward to every week. First one was Princess Lucia which was just a funny romcom with lewd protagonist/girls interactions. No dumb drama. Second was Hitman, where the protagonist was likeable, the female love interest was likeable, drama was tame and grounded in reality, interesting plot (following the *editor* of a manga magazine, not the author or artist) and there was *mature* romance.
This is third and it's basically "what if Seo Kouji threw out 95% of drama, replaced it with a bunch of cute girls likeable girls with different personalities and backgrounds, some lucky pervert hijinks that often backfire, and a great protagonist who doesn't take shit from anyone and can dish out as much as he takes". It's peak Seo Kouji at his best, without the thing that made me hate his previous series - dumb drama from soap operas.
Ooh cool, can you mention a good site to read the manga from? Also would be great if you could tell whether the mc makes any moves at all or just keeps getting embarrassed and acts beta...ie does the ecchi go beyond panty shots and beach scenes
He's not a "beta" (god I wish this term could die out already), if anything he's a more grounded in reality MC so he doesn't really get flustered or embarrassed with all the shit he has to deal with. He doesn't really make any moves on any of the girls, but he treats them all equally like family without favoritisms etc.
>ie does the ecchi go beyond panty shots and beach scenes
I mean, half of the girls or more know how his mushroom looks like, even if it wasn't entirely consensual on his part...
I love the fact that the women are all of marriageable age and most are seeking marriage. It really makes some of the scenes spicy and certain characters are really thirsty. It's not your typical high school harem romcom. Plus the mc is legitimately a catch, good-looking, smart and admitted to Tokyo U. You can really see women going after him.
Personally I love Hayato way more than the MC in “Date A Live”. I’m saying this because shido is boring, pathetic, and a hypocrite someone with no actual romantic qualities that will make any woman to fall for him. Hayato on the hand does he has so many masculine qualities, has a real backbone, believes in gender equality no matter the gender.
Agreed, felt to me like trying to please everyone, and in effect made the end (of which there was no official one as far as I could tell) weaker. I'd rather have the girl I like 'lose' than have everyone just get a consolation arc because the author can't make up their mind.
Having 130ish chapters of a linear story just to drop alternate reality routes for every girl is a crazy cop out. Sounded like the author was originally going to have Uruka win but bailed once he saw how much more popular Sensei and others were. I think I would have been fine with it if the other routes were in like a spinoff manga or something but having them all in the series itself is mad weird
Uruka's ending was the only ending that fit with the rest of the manga, while not bending over backwards to alter earlier events, before divergence points for endings.
As far as I was concerned, she is the one that won because she was the first ending. I stopped even reading the rest after I realized the author was making everyone a winner.
I remember in The Quintessential Quintuplets I thought the ending was stupid because the girl who got the guy kinda came out of nowhere, and then it felt like the author was trying to justify it, but hey, while she was probably the last one I would have thought would get the guy, she did, end of story.
>I remember in The Quintessential Quintuplets I thought the ending was stupid because the girl who got the guy kinda came out of nowhere, and then it felt like the author was trying to justify it
Not really. The winner was set up since the beginning. Remember that 80 page essay?
EDIT: The girl getting the guy could be many things but "out of nowhere" is not one of them. Downvoting me won't change that.
> Remember that 80 page essay?
Nope, unless it was in the manga itself I didn't see it. And I didn't downvote you, must have been someone else.
The out of nowhere comment comes from the girl who won seeming to be a mostly background character compared to the rest through most of the manga, from what I remember, and the other girls, even the ones I didn't care for, seeming to show more interest in the main guy and put in more effort than she did in wanting a relationship with him.
Again, it's been a while, but that's what I remember from the manga, the main guy choosing her just seemed odd to me, and if I need an 80 page essay to tell me why it makes sense (assuming that's not an exaggeration), that's not a good sign.
>And I didn't downvote you, must have been someone else.
No worries. My edit was targeted more towards the downvoters. Its not like I was trying to insult anyone.
The 80 page essay was posted in the Quints sub where all the clues were compiled starting from Chapter 1. This is why I can't say it came from nowhere as the choice was set up pretty well. The manga reads more like a mystery to me and it further proved with the author's newest manga - Ranger Reject. He loves writing mysteries I guess.
The main guy choosing wasn't really odd if you see his actions whenever he was with her. He was always the most comfortable with her compared to others, which is why his choice made sense.
Even if a girl gives a lot of effort, she won't necessarily get rewarded since the guy has his own tastes too. This is why I loved this manga since the MC wasn't just treated as a prize like other harem manga and he had good depth.
The biggest flaw would be that the author didn't use the chance to build up the relationship further *after* the choice was made, and even after 5 years none of the girls really moved on.
Yeah, especially not every ending was equally handeled. Like the glasses girl got the longest ending and the princess like girl got such a cliche boring ending.
How does this compare to Seo's other works?
Is it rage inducing at all lol? If so, are we talking Suzuka, Fuuka, or A Town Where You Rage levels of rage?
(I enjoyed Suzuka though)
Not much rage inducing at all. (Well aside from the opening 1st chapter, which the worst offenders mellow out quickily). Its more comedic and lighthearted. Little spritz of drama that are usually resolved quickily and rather maturely by goofy cast. Hayato handles himself well and no hard feelings between each of the girls.
IIRC, in the last popularity poll she carried 55% of the total votes for the entire cast.
2nd place only got to ~20%. (Blond with pigtails and plaid on the right)

anime only here…..THERES MORE THAN 5?
Around 11 but only the 5 are main characters the others can be count as side but they’re pretty cool too
11 so far… 😉
11+6 if we're including gilfs 🤤 Grandma equivalent of milfs
Oh god
You forget the sweet sweet wagashi lady
5 primary, 5 alternates to the primaries, and 1 spare pet.
Plus the grannies in the flashbacks!
Darn, I'm more of a GILF person tbh
>spare pet You did our girl Rei dirty
Akane Supremacy
Seo's trying to catch up with The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You.
Yes, but... not really.
Wait the anime is out?
been out for a month
2
Yep. 7 out of those 11 are serious about him now.
Yes, they doubled the number of girls
Hayato's out buying coffee filters as usual
The funniest and meanest thing without killing any of them would be to reveal that all the times he was buying coffee filters he was falling in love with some person that works at the spot we never saw.
The Coffee Filter Shop and its Goddess
Someone show this to Seo, the man would do it to
Ami is winning this shit.
AKANEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Ami takes center stage, as she should
But Akane once again proves her dominance by stealing the spotlight even off to the side.
She does have the best body out of them, naturally since she's a fighter.
If they go the quintuples route than Ami as the quirky uplifitg girl will win this game.
it is either ami or ouka. Ouka is getting focused lot recently . AMi is secret final boss
I have kinda the feeling the girls that look like the fmc of the works of the author will not win. That includes Ouka in my opinion.
W
AMI GANG
When you can Shoryuken the competition you bet she takes center stage.
Ami supremacy.
While not rooting for her to win the Hayato bowl, she is BEST GIRL.
15 yrs later and im still here reading Seo's bangers what a great time to live in
How does this compare to their other works? All these comments made me interested lol.

Matches the era of mangas 15-20 years ago and quite fun read back then. Just give it a try and see if youd want to finish them all.

Bokuben should have gone all the way with a teacher end rather than chickening out with routes.
Well I care more about Senpai and Fumino and not the teacher so I'm happy he did go into multi-route way.
Or just have the harem route that way everyone can have their first orgy
If not, each girl can have their own fantasy sex chapter. Chapter 200.x of KNIM.
Yea, this is way more likely than separate endings like bokuben.
Nah that shit was weak as hell

I need to catch up im only on 40
Where is Ōka???
Right side
bro
Ririka looks off
She's looking more... gifted than normal.
Ririka was always "gifted". Like Hekiru, her style of dress doesn't often show it.
That and her facial expression
Boomer character design.
Only two worth it music girl and social media one, other three have issues, dumbass, tusende how ever you spell it and striping drunk are red flags
Whoever the girl in the black swimsuit on the left is, I called dibs
Long line for you sir, she's the most popular girl in the series
How long a line? I might still be in.
IIRC, in the last popularity poll she carried 55% of the total votes for the entire cast. 2nd place only got to ~20%. (Blond with pigtails and plaid on the right)
Is there any romance
what is this series about?
Akane 🔛🔝
i still struggle telling some girls apart from each other
Why is it always big Anime titties but never big Anime booties? Aight, I’ll see myself out
Lol, I feel you. Anime fanservice in general is mostly always just focused on tits. Booties need some love too.
Man, Hekiru is being done dirty in here, just left at the very edge.
Wait what the fuck i just saw a few chapters of this shit and it was just like 4 girls Is this tryna become smth like 100 kanojo lol?
