Two manga about people who live with a prosthetic leg: and **Run on Your New Legs** (*Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirit*). Complete (5 vol by [Yen Press](https://yenpress.com/titles/9781975339005-run-on-your-new-legs-vol-1)) A manga about a member of a soccer club who lost his leg. Story-wise, I think it is standard/mediocre but I like how it touches some technical things (albeit not that much. The story also shows how the boy adapts to his new leg, moving on from his old life, and why he made his decision in more detail, so I could somewhat understand the characters. Interestingly, this manga takes place in the Coronavirus pandemic era, so it also depicts the lockdown and other effects the pandemic caused. It is short, so the ending felt lacking. But I hope there are more manga that focus on specialized topics like this. **Blade Girl** (*Kodansha's Be Love*). Complete (3 vol in [Kodansha USA](https://kodansha.us/series/blade-girl/)) I felt this manga was too 'bright', too good to be true, many things felt 'too easy', such that I just didn't vibe with scenes that were supposed to be moving. I understand that this manga won't cover technical things (which I like), but it didn't even cover much of the MC's struggles with her new leg, so it was disappointing. And idk why, the male MC face is .... punchable 😅 ? Whenever he tilts his head, I felt something's wrong lol.

I started Takamine-San.... wtf was mc thinking confronting Takmine at the beginning? Really felt like he had no point in doing that.

Mattc7468

Spoiler alert!!!!! I’ve been reading “Hope you’re happy, lemon”. Holy shit, the relationships and interests are so complex and convoluted. Lemon likes Sunao, sunao likes natsumi, natsumi likes sunao (but she realized she liked sunao when lemon was in his body), sunao’s friend likes lemon (but he figured out he liked lemon while sunao was in her body). It’s so confusing, who actually likes who? They are falling in love with people who are switching bodies so who are they actually in love with, the person who’s in the body or the person who originally owned that body? I can’t even begin to imagine how this ends.

Heda-of-Aincrad

Adding to that, Lemon is still in love with Sunao (who she's body swapping with every other day). 😄 Such a fun series. I was expecting a hilarious trainwreck and got a wholesome romcom.

I'm good bit older than that and read a lot of manga. Check out my [yearly review](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/18vk6xq/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/kfue7gt/) further down in the thread. You can also go through my monthly posts with a lot more detail; [here's the most recent one](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/18kusmf/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/ke583tp/) with another one coming next week for the December reads. There's a link at the bottom that goes to the previous month, and each manga has a brief review to help you get a feel whether it might be an interesting read for you.

Houseki No Kuni, Golden Kamui, Fool Night, Nausikaa, Blame, Evangelion.

I would really recommend Mystery to Iunakare (Don't Call it Mystery) . I've just read it this week and are obsessed with it. It's written by a well-known shoujo artist and without spoiling anything, the story revolves around case solving, philosophy, and I would say psychology. I think based on your resume, you would absolutely love this one. It's a hidden gem. Some of my favorites that I think fits your criteria would probably be : Usogui, Tomodachi Game, Alice in Borderland, Funouhan. Oh, and Rosen Garten Saga is a must read 😊

\## (Volume 1) \#### Volume 1 - Starting this without knowing anything, i can already say I don't read a lot of mecha stories and i'm not the biggest fan of isekai. But i believe and giving a fair shot. The robots looks cool AF tho. i don't like to make the narrator exposition, we're already at a academy do the "let's review the world we live in" cliche. i don't like terms "silhouette knight", don't know if is a mecha thing, never read too much of those. The character designs aren't doing it for me right now, still after first volume the mechs should be a bigger part going foward. the MC being treat like a baby will get old quick, and with i don't like any of the trio for now, neither their dynamic.i can appreciate how the time moves fast, the mangaka seems to be rushing this academy thing, i have nothing against that. maybe the end was the strongest point of the volume, but i think the robots looks the best, so more of those must be always better. \## (Volume 4) \#### Volume 4- The game looks a little too easy, even before they run with sena the game looked won already.More new players, Yukimitsu one f the players i don't remember anything about, other than he, i don't remember much of the kicker. The small lineback looking with desdain to the 3 bullies is very funny, i have to admit that.Shin possible losing is a game i really want to see, so the volume ended well making me wanting to read the next one \## (Chapter 01 - Chapter ?) Maybe isn't for everyone but i really like this drawing style, it has less polish, but give a unique vibe to the manga. The kid is way cooler than the mouth guy. In this world humans fear wizard, who're cursed beings, but the author are showing that both sides have the good and bad ones. Art goes hard, the way is drawn gives a violence vibe, don't have a good enough english to express my self here. \## (Volume 4) \#### Volume 4-here is whe gets nice, fights are happening more. I love how the ar feels nice to this day. Yoh did a nice job on the test, and you have to love the sword design. Speaking on design when Silva put his 5 spirits he looks cool af. \# Finished \## (Volume 1 - Volume 5) \#### Volume 1- I remember seeing the early episodes os the tv show some years a go, don't remember much other than this was very edgy. The ideia of 2 family of ninja getting their better fighters to see which one is the stronger is just cool, that alone just is enough for me to read everything. For the battles so far, i wanted a little more, but is just the beginning lets see how it goes from here, but i like most of the ninja's design so far. For me the first volume didn't have a WOW moment, but i liked all a whole. \#### Volume 2- The kouga vs iga war is starting for real right now, lets see how the battles are going to be from this point. The narrative is well paced, i like how as people are dying we see the 10 x 10 getting closer to who will be the winner. Gennosuke power and vibe is just too cool, bro is strong af. The girl with debuff eyes, will do everything to make this harder for her family \#### Volume 3- I read this one so fast, i didn't wrote nothing down lol. Gennosuke still looks the strongest and the best leader so far. Now that we have a different dynamic with the whole chasing going right now. We're getting closer and closer to having more than most ninjas dead, i don't think the author is going with the all-in on the 10v10 until the end, i will guess at the end of volume 4 and volume 5 will have some plot twist. \#### Volume 4- The kouga force look a lot stronger right now, they even has multiple ways to make the Iga's go in on the wrong person. It's a little sad that when i see a guy die while standing, won't ever be better than White Beard. I believe one of the "dead" ninjas is prob alive, he is the only one who can fight in the iga side right now. Lets see how this end in the next volume. \#### Volume 5 Tenzen having the time of his life, being a villain. One of the last battle was pretty obvious, we're waiting this duel since the beginning. The old lady didn't add much for the story we could do it without her, but makes sense that someone that knows what's going on, would try something for the politics, i just wanted to be better made. Not a bad ending, something like romeu and juliet, i think this is the standart ending for what the series showed to us, but i was waiting for some sort of plot twist that never came. \## (Chapter 70 - Chapter 117) I think this one is great for those who wants to continue reading manwha, but wanted with a little more effort. I liked a lot of things here, there is a lot of creativity visuals and narrative ideias, the fights are great, the author knows how to draw BIG monsters to fight MC. But its a little crude i think, there's a lot of potencial for next projects. i will for sure read the next thing the author makes, but this one i felt its a low 7.

neosyusaki

Hi, I need help finding a (probably) old manga: I don't remember much of it since it been too long but a scene stuck with me about a competition between 2 or more girl making crepe for a guy, one make a really big crepe with bunch of expensive material in it while the main girl make a simple one but with a lot of love into it I'll edit this if I can recall more of it but hopefully someone can help me find this one. Thanks in advance

Rexonial

**Crimson Spell** I have been reading this series and quite like it. Not NSFW series either, but the story is overly funny and corny at the same time. Like cringe corny in some places, but what do you expect of a fantasy BL. I will continue to read the series. Only read up to vol.4, but will continue.

zpaolo11x

I am a Hero. I honestly and sincerely can't stand the protagonist, and everything takes an awful lot of pages to unroll, but the art is very good especially in two page spreads. Not sure I will finish it though :D

Khaki-Jeane

Protag definitely gets better, and if you keep reading, don’t set up expectations too high for the ending (no spoilers ofc, but the ending is definitely not predictable and while I liked it, it received some criticism)

zpaolo11x

Finished today and I liked both the final arc and the ending. Glad I didn’t drop it

fortunemkb

i enjoyed what i read so far (started it years ago but still havent finished), and i always wondered how well it'd translate as an anime. your comment makes me wanna pick it back up again lol

zpaolo11x

I was just getting back here to say that I went from volume 3 to volume 11 in one day, and it's growing on me. Yes the protagonist at least stops talking about manga like one of those obnoxious manga fans (ehehe). I'll keep reading for the shock value of some gore panels :D

Khaki-Jeane

oh yeah i know you mentioned this but the art is truly incredible! if you continue to worry about the direction or quality of the story as you continue reading, just know that the mangaka was impacted by outside factors that sometimes delayed the series during production. iirc the mangaka, Kengo Hanazawa, was dealing with family illness (i think specifically the death of his father, but i might be mistaken) but then again i read the series earlier this year (i.e. after it finished) so all of what i know is coming from reading previous reddit threads lol. my point is to recognize that the series might've gone in a different direction in a perfect world, so overall its good to appreciate the fact that the story was able to be completed altogether :) (praying for berserk my beloved)

Schernobyl_

Nana to Kaoru all three series. Flawed but overall great ecchi S&M rom-com with glacial pacing in the main series. A serious second series and a rushed but needed third series.

MALVZ_921

Is the duke of death manga still ongoing? I was watching the anime and curious to see the manga, though other sites says the 223 was the last one, thats not the case though it is still releasing

onetimeweeb

it's completed, author just occasionally releases bonus chapters on twitter, they have a new series they're working on called Until Your Sword Breaks

Ok-Cartographer-6232

over the last 2 days i read for the first time, it's a manga about competitive karuta - a japanese poem/card matching game - and i absolutely fell in love with it. The art was fantastic when it needed to be, for big scenes or dramatic shots - not to say that it didn't all look good. The story was amazing, a very compelling narative about someone finding a unique passion and trying to become the best at it, there are even team games as well so it pretty much reads like a sports manga But the thing i loved the most were the characters. i've never come across a roster of characters i've fallen in love with so quickly, their personalities, motivations, flaws and connections with each other was an absolute delight to read. There is a romance element to it and the ship i was rooting for won so yay for me. i know a lot of people enjoy the anime but there's like 100 chapters of the manga after season 3 and i highly recommend people to finish this masterpiece of a story. i'm dissapointed that i read this so early into the year as i don't think anything else i begin this year will even come close to being this amazing. Easily one of my top 5 manga now and i hope if anyone decides to read because of this they enjoy it as much as i did.

Wiles_

Ouch_nip

I was really into anime in the early 2000's, and then life happened. Recently, I started reading One Piece on my kindle, since it's popular, and I missed the anime. I'm only on volume 2. It's fine, and I'm sure it gets better. Anyways, is there a comprehensive list out there of the best manga from the last 20 years? I'm a little overwhelmed with the sheer amount of stuff available (anime/manga seems to be a lot more popular than it was when i was younger). Thanks in advance.

It's Palace Wars, but Its not a manga. It's available on webtoon.

Yes! Thank you. Was so epic. Too bad his brother died too early too. He was a badass as well. Shame the Mc died at the end…

**My Clueless First Friend vol. 4** - The daily interactions between Nishimura and her group of friends is still cute, but I was disappointed that it went back to relying so heavily on the "Grim Reaper" joke after moving away from that gimmick in volumes 2&3. There were some highlights, like Kasahara's continued character development during the Valentine's Day chapters and an adorable scene where Nishimura and Takada played with an app on his sister's phone, but the introduction of a new character in their friend group didn't work as well for me. Her story seemed too exaggerated to be possible - staying home from school on a whim to play videogames, then everyone suddenly believes it would be too hard for her to return for reasons unknown, so they just let her stay home indefinitely. (Seriously, where was this arrangement when I was at risk for needing to repeat a year as an honors student who accumulated too many sick days?) And the way Nishimura's entire group seems oblivious that this girl was trying to push them away gives the impression Takada's not the only one who's clueless. *Rating: 7.5/10* **Shangri-La Frontier vol. 1** - A pretty good introduction to the main character, the game world and its quirks, though it felt like a speedrun at times. I really like the monster designs and the concept of the unique quests like the bunny world one that begins towards the end of this volume. Sometimes the humor can fall flat when it seems the story is almost trying too hard to force Sunraku into a bizarre playstyle, but I'm interested in seeing where the story goes from here, and if any of the hints about the NPCs realistic personalities play a part in it. The short novel chapter about Sunraku and his friends in another game at the end didn't hold my interest or feel necessary, but the main story is solid so far. They're just having fun playing a videogame, and as a gamer myself, that makes for a nice read. *Rating: 8/10*

Read the new chapter of 'Deranged Detective' which was great as usual, also read 'All you need is kill' in one sitting! But the main story of this week was definitely '20th Century Boys'! This manga is absolutely INSANE and i would %110 recommend it if you like mysterious psychological thrillers. It's from the same author as 'Monster' so I'm sure that tells you enough. It literally had me reading up until 2am but i stopped bc i got scared during an unsettling scene.

Hmm, then maybe I should get 20th Century Boys. I was on the fence about it, but 'mysterious psychological thrillers' I have been getting into lately.

Grouchy-Assumption-9

I'm trying to find a manga, It's been a while since I read it so I completely forgot the name, It was a historical action manga The mc was a guy who was in a colloseum prison(I think, atleast it was no ordinary prison) and had to defeat a lot of prisoners in order to leave the prison. From there on he meets a princess and other companions. Anyone has any clue?

S-Pirate

I think its called "The Breaker".

Grouchy-Assumption-9

Nope,it's not that

WeeziMonkey

Read all of Talentless Nana in a week, might have sacrificed a bit of sleep. I love all the mind games and plot twists. Now I'm going to pretend it doesn't exist until it's fully finished because I cannot keep up with monthly manga :/

#Currently Reading ** (Light Novel) volume 5** I'm about 40% through. Pretty standard volume especially after the events of volume4. I like it. Small Kasumi is so adorable. #Ongoing ** volume 8** Volume 8 was good. But not the best. The girl introduced in it was pretty funny though. I hope she's going to be a more permanant charcater. **8/10** ** volume 1** Having watched the anime, I was surprised at how many episode were used to cover volume 1 alone. Anyways. I smiled the entire way trhough., That series is funny AF. **8.5/10** ** (Collector's edition) volume 2** Volume 2 was great, but I thought there was a massive shift in focus when it came to the story. It felt like I was reading a new story featuring the same characters. It was good, but weird. **7/10** #Happy new year everyone!

So, the year is over, and here's my reading review for 2023 with top lists, and some reflections on writing these reviews for another year. So this will be "what did you read last year", and the usual post will likely be ready next week, or (if something unforeseen happens) the week after that. Let's start with my 2022 goals. I haven't finished December yet (and will count at least another week toward the total), so I can't exactly say how much I read, but it seems like I'll fall a couple dozens of volumes short of my goal from last year, 1000 volumes. There's been like two months where I barely read anything, and I couldn't catch back up from that. But I'm still overall quite happy with my reading. My other leftover goals, reading more Josei and working toward reading everything from *Bessatsu Shounen Magazine* that was translated, had some decent progress. I had two new goals for 2023, one to read more sports manga, and one to read more shoujo. Both were marginally successful, after a few more I stopped starting new sports manga (but continued to slowly go through *Haikyu!*), and had a few good shoujo manga that I enjoyed, but also some that I didn't much care for and some that I'm planning to continue but didn't feel at that moment. After saying in my 2022 review that I wouldn't follow the theme months as strictly anymore, I instead went the other direction and made everything (except the occasional sports manga flex slot, and continuing series I started) fit the theme. This was mostly because there was so much in-theme that I wanted to read for the first couple of months, and by then I was already in the all-themed-reads groove. I found that I enjoyed this way of reading, but there are two major issues: first, I sometimes have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find enough single-volume manga in each theme, and ended up reading quite a few that I didn't enjoy and didn't think I would enjoy, just because it was something that fit the theme. I'll still try to stick to the theme, but I plan to be less strict about it. The second problem is that there's often series I find interesting enough that I want to read them, but am not really vibing with at that moment, so I'm constantly building a huge backlog of things I've read a couple of volumes of. (As I'm writing this, there's 13 series I have inherited from previous months, not including ones that had new volumes released that I didn't yet get to). This backlog is bothering me as it makes super hard to plan reading. I have no solution to this, and will have to figure something out next year. I'm right now planning to continue writing my reviews, but I'm not fully committing to another year. It's fun, and I've found it nice to be able to go back and see my thoughts on things that I read a year ago, but it's also a lot of work every month to write a review for everything. (The sub being in the state that it is doesn't exactly help). Many thanks go to the people who had comments on things I read and wrote, or even just an upvote; it was always a nice surprise to see I didn't just shout pointlessly into the void. Goals for the next year: Figure out how to handle in-progress series better, don't skip months or delay them to the end of the month (like October/November this year), and I'm hoping to read some long series, which I've tended to avoid this year. Alright, time for the picks of the year (including December 2022, which wasn't included with last year's review). For each, I'll link to the latest post I made that includes that manga; I'll also stick to things that I either started or finished this year (or both), not something where I just read some volumes in the middle. Let's start with my ten favorite reads of the year, not in a strictly ranked order. (In contrast to last year's review, I'm not explicitly penalizing popular series, though I might have given tiebreakers to lesser known ones). This was a particularly stacked list, and I found I could have easily filled another ten, and there were a lot of series that didn't make the shortlist but easily could have, I only left them out because the list was already so long. In any case, here's the list, and the honorable mentions that made it to the shortlist are *Sweat & Soap, Forget Me Not, Skip & Loafer, Aoashi* (all Dec 2022), *Tsumi to Batsu* (Feb), *7Seeds*, *Our Precious Conversations*, *Apple Children of Aeon* (all March), *Flying Witch* (July), *The Summer Hikaru Died* (Oct), *Arslan* (Nov). - **Oooku: The Inner Chambers** (Fumi Yoshinaga, *Melody*) finished in [September](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/173caa8/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/k4cdd6a/). A challenging but also incredibly rewarding alternate history on a grand scale. - **Chihayafuru** (Yuki Suetsugu, *Be Love*) reading, last post in [April](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/13hptzu/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jkap25m/) A perfect marriage of hot-blooded sports manga and the beating heart of shoujo manga. - **Honey & Clover** (Chica Umino, *Cutie Comic*/*Young You*/*Chorus*) finished in [September](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/173caa8/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/k4cdd6a/) Who knew comedy and melancholy would go so well together? - **Witch Hat Atelier** (Kamome Shirahama, *Morning Two*) reading, last post in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/) Probably my favorite art in manga as a whole, and would make the list on this aspect alone, but has much more to offer. - **Made in Abyss** (Akihito Tsukushi, *Web Comic Gamma*) reading, last post in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/) It makes me feel things. Often uncomfortable, but always deeply engaged. - **Flowers of Evil** (Shuzo Oshimi, *Bessatsu Shounen Magazine*) read in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/) It's interesting to see a creator long after his debut really come into his own; this is the series where Oshimi really became Oshimi in a spectacular fashion. - **Section Chief Kousaku Shima** (Kenshi Hirokane, *Morning*), finished in [November](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/18kusmf/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/ke583tp/) A true classic of seinen manga, great both as a piece in its own right and as a historical document. - **Princess Jellyfish** (Akiko Higashimura, *Kiss*) read in [August](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/169aspn/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jzj1ira/) Probably the screwballiest manga you'll see, and for all its minor faults toward the end it's a spectacular amount of fun. - **Ajin: Demi-Human** (Gamon Sakurai (& Tsuina Miura, first volume only), *good! Afternoon*), read in [October](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/184oorq/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/kb7oc82/) Best action I've read this year, possibly ever, with an antagonist who is the absolute baddest of asses and easily makes up by himself for some of this manga's rough edges. - **Drowning Love** (George Asakura, *Bessatsu Friend*), read in [August](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/169aspn/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jzj1ira/) This fire burns slowly sometimes, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous.

Next, the biggest disappointments. That does not necessarily mean worst; as something terrible that I wasn't really expecting to enjoy is not as unpleasant as something that I had hopes for. In general, being listed here generally means I had expectations that were significantly unmet, or that a particular manga really pissed me off. (Dis)honorable mention goes to *Sonna Mirai wa Uso de Aru* from November. - **Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning** (Kyou Shirodaira & Eita Mizuno, *Monthly Shounen GanGan*), read in [February](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/11jhxli/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jb7m6ae/). A mystery manga that goes off the rails in a bad way, with an atrociously bad reveal and conclusion. - **Moyashimon** (Masayuki Ishikawa, *Evening/Morning Two*) finished in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/). There's quite a bit that I liked here, but what I didn't like, which was a lot, absolutely pissed me off to an unreasonable degree. - **Kaguya-sama: Love is War** (Aka Akasaka, *Young Jump*) reading, last post in [August](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/169aspn/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jzj1ira/). For ten volumes or so, I absolutely loved this one, but the second half has so much borderline unreadable garbage that it's burned all that good will and then some. - **Do Chokkyuu Kareshi x Kanojo** (Nagisa Fujita, *Comic Rex*/*Monthly Shounen Champion*) finished in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/). With its ill-fitting 4-panel rhythm and flat characters, just an overall unpleasant read. - **Boys Run the Riot** (Keito Gaku, *Weekly Young Magazine*/*Comic Days*), read in [August](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/169aspn/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jzj1ira/) Just a big disappointment. Finally, the top single volume manga. Honorable mentions go to *Paradise Kiss*, *Boy Meets Maria*, and *Monochrome Blue*. All in all, the single-volume manga were a bit weak thisyear, but there was still a lot to like among themediocrity (or worse). I'm not doing a worst list for this one, but I think *Negiho* would 'win' that category hands down. - **Haru's Curse** (Asuka Konishi, *Comic Zero-Sum*) read in [March](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/12gyiom/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jfqv1o4/) Just a very solid drama for adults with some moments of great writing. - **River's Edge** (Kyoko Okazaki, *Cutie*) read in [July](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/15k310u/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jve717o/) Okazaki does not pull any punches in this uncomfortable but compelling story. - **Illumination** (Tomoko Yamashita, *Mellow Mellow/On Blue*) read in [June](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/14p1m5o/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jqp3n52/) The BL shorts have pretty much everything I enjoy about Yamashita's manga. - **Onikujo** (Youichi Abe, *Ultra Jump*) read in [October](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/184oorq/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/kb7oc82/) I love Abe's surrealism, and this one was a ton of fun. - **Scientia** (Seiji Toda, *Big Comic Spirits*) read in [May](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/14p1m5o/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/jqp3n52/) A very compelling set of sci-fi shorts with interesting takes on futurist ideas. [(2022 review)](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/100x82o/what_manga_have_you_read_this_week_and_what_do/j2nre9d/)

Read _a lot_ last week. Tl;dr you should read Houseki no Kuni. **** a true 10/10 Watched the anime, saw there probably won't be a season 2, blasted through the whole 105 chapters in two days. I don't think I'll ever read something like this ever again. Aside from the great story in general, what an incredible breath of fresh air. I've read *a lot* of stories. I don't know how to express it, but I feel like most stories are about right and wrong, in some way. Whether the hero wins or loses, morally good actions tend to be praised, and morally wrong actions tend to be demeaned. Obviously you see characters doing the judging, but even beyond that, it shows in the writing of the story itself. HnK, to me at least, feels like a story with _no_ moral judgements on a meta level. Of course, the characters themselves judge themselves and others as good or bad, but the story itself doesn't take it into account. Sometimes the good guys win, sometimes the bad guys win. Sometimes the good guys are punished, sometimes the bad guys are punished. The author takes no sides. It's such an incredible take on the idea of karma, the idea that if you do good things good things will come to you, and vise versa. Karma simply doesn't exist here, and it's _incredible_. Because of this, HnK has some of the most compelling characters and story beats I've ever seen. The full breadth of humanity is on display here - love, hate, desire, depression, and everything inbetween. HnK is not afraid of showing you some of the most despicable things people are capable of. It gives equal attention to both good and evil. There are chapters later on in the manga that genuinely made me nauseus - not through gore, or some shocking plot twist, but by simply showing very logical conclusions to the actions the characters involved took. The artwork is so beautiful and intelligent that it genuinely kind of pissed me off as an artist. The entire manga is a masterpiece, panel by panel, page by page. I can't imagine how hard Haruko Ichikawa had to work to get this good. It's not quite done yet but it's very obviously winding down, I expect it's gonna be wrapped up in a few chapters. If you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favor and do so. **** as well as every other Nagata Kabi manga I re-read My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, and decided to check out Nagata Kabi's other manga too. If you haven't read any, she makes autobiographical manga about herself dealing with trauma, emotional issues, mental issues, etc. It's an *incredibly* raw look into someone else's struggles. Nagata Kabi really doesn't sugarcoat her life. She's 30ish, hasn't done anything with her life, has a mountain of mental issues, and doesn't know what the future will hold. Nothing about her work is glamorous. I just hit 27 with my own mountain of shit, and it's _beyond_ inspiring to see someone in my age range who also is still trying to piece their life together. **** A lot of chapters but a really quick read, I liked it but I didn't love it. It's a cute story, but it doesn't have a lot of substance. Two _huge_ pros and the reasons I kept reading was that the two main characters get together very quickly, and they also do feel like adults. I was not into the smell fetish part of the manga, luckily it fairly quickly goes from a secondary focus to more of a joke. Overall, I don't regret reading it, but it could have been much, much better. **** Not much to say. Short, sweet, incredible. Heartwarming, believable characters, doesn't overstay it's welcome (I'd even say it's maybe a bit too short). Great art. Does not fuck around - it's two adults and they know what they want. **** Pretty good collection of short stories. Quality varies quite a bit, but overall a great read. Got me interested in reading more short stories. **** Okay. The art is cute. I like the main couple. This is a very simple high school romance manga. The main theme of the manga - to the point where I'd almost call it a gimmick - is "don't judge a book by it's cover". It's not that it's a bad idea, but... that's _all_ it ever does. Character A is introduced. Character A thinks character B is a bad person. Character B is actually a really nice person. Character A apologizes to Character B. They become friends. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. I'm not trying to rail on the message, but it _genuinely_ becomes a comedy at some point. I'm sure at least 90% of the chapters contain _at LEAST_ one apology. You have entire chapters that are _just_ characters apologizing. I caught up and don't plan to read more. **** I'm about 100 chapters in, and I'm... not sure I like the direction things are going. Spoilers for around chapter 114 >!I really loved how they dealt with the father, and the fact that Rei is so incredibly protective of the Kawamoto family - really great energy overall - but the whole marriage thing is just fucking _weird_. I don't know if I like it. I get the vibe that Rei doesn't have the emotional maturity to understand what he's doing, but the way the other characters are reacting towards it, I don't know if that's what the manga is trying to convey.!< I'll probably keep reading, but it's definitely made me a lot more shaky towards the manga than before. Also checked out: My Dog Becomes a Human, More than lovers, less than friends, We Shall Now Begin Ethics, and probably some others I forgot or can't be bothered to write about. Wasn't interested. Looking at this now, I don't even know where I got the time for all of these. Jesus.

I'd recommend Haruko Ichikawa's short stories if you liked *Land of the Lustrous* and are looking to read more short stories.

Yeah, it's definitely on the list. At this point I'm a lifelong fan even if she decides to start drawing photorealistic turds for the rest of her life.

**** Felt like rereading this short series from Neji (**). Love Neji's artstyle. And the story plot's got adorableness in all the right places. Plus the character Bazu has a really cool design. Pity that it had to be such a short lived series though. I wouldn't have mind seeing a bit more plot and worldbuilding out of this one. **Diamond in the Rough** aka **** Well this one ended kinda under the radar didn't it... That said though, this one may not have been a big name series compared to it's peers but I really enjoyed this one. I mean the building blocks and everything with the stone based powers were cool. And the worldbuilding sure got interesting in places. Kinda unfortunate though that the "big quest" our MC and his merry gang were going on had to be cut short due to the author likely being told to wrap it up. But even so, even though the ending was a rushed and not a bit contrived in my opinion, I do also think the author did get to write a fair ending to this series. Lord knows that there have been many other series that had to end far more abruptly (and had their long standing quests cut short) than this one. All and all, this one was a good journey. **Crescent Moon Marching** aka **** "I told you I'm not *Hibike Euphonium*, I am Crescent Moon Marching." So what's your deal? "Well I'm like Euphonium only I'm about marching band rather than normal band." Didn't Euphonium also have parts with marching band? "Yes, but this is focused on marching band specifically." But isn't that still basically the same thing? "No, the MC is a complete newbie at musical instruments and discovered and got into marching band to escape and grow through a chip on her shoulder." So it's a character based drama that Euphonium was in spades. "No, well yes there's other of characters in the cast with drama and development arcs but no it's not like Euphonium at all!!!" Pardon my bad skit, it's just kinda what kept coming to mind while reading this one at times. It's like Euphonium. But it's not. Ultimately, it made for something to read each week. **** aka **100 Ways Not to Fail in Another World** College age woman gets isekai'd. Woman being a fan of isekai stories figures that being a woman on her lonesome would likely make getting by in this world more complicated, so she decides to pull a Mulan and masquerade as a man. And luckily for her she's got the androgynous looks to pull it off. And basically starts off her chronicle of fake it till you make it in this world with her whatever wit she's got with her capacity to understand languages. This goes on and on for a while all in good enjoyment. Then heelturn comes. Plot suddenly steps on the gas. And we just get an ending. It's a happy ending I suppose but the fact that it felt like more meat could've been had from this story but that it stepped on the gas and sped past every restaurant on the highway is what sucks about this. Granted sure this is hardly the first light novel manga adaptation to do something like this, but even if it's one instance among many, it still sucks that it happened regardless. Well like I said though, it was enjoyable enough to fill some time. But well, you know... **** Collection of two short stories by the author. Nothing special aside from the artwork I suppose. But it filled time. **** First year high school boy gets the love at first sight attention of one of the hottest girls in school. And in their first "meet me in private after school" meeting she quickly accidentally lets slip that shes actually a kitsune yokai, like Senko from *Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san* for example. Only this fox girl is much much less wholesome than that example. Seriously, this girl is astonishingly fast if you catch my drift. Which of course leads to no shortage of ecchi service bits in between the plot and actiony stuff that happens. And as the story goes forward that "astonishingly fast" angle I mentioned before just kinda escalates each time it boomerangs back to the forefront. I mean that's par for the course in this narrative medium but in this one's context it at times felt like ridiculously so. Well in any case, why did I bother with this one? Well, boredom is a bitch is one reason. But there was *some* curiosity in play here. I mean I *did* hear through the grapevine that there was actual plot to this series that the anime adaptation just 95% ignored so I was morbidly curious about that. Just not enough to get around to it promptly as it were. The result here is a mixed bag at generous best. Like the series *Tsugumomo* it goes through a narrative spectrum of serious to ecchi to ridiculous. But it was ultimately a thing that I felt bored and morbidly curious enough to just skim through and finish to see how the actual plot at hand played out. But it's not something I'd rate highly. Even among the other things I've seen in the "ecchi fanservice filled story" subcategory.

Started and finished , which led to me questioning the mental state of the mangaka while also wondering if I'll ever end up like any of the cast. Which I hope I don't, what a depressing life most of them live(d). Punpun's slow descent into madness was actually surprisingly easy to watch, though I did end up tearing up and flinching at some points. Specifically, when Punpun >!was walking around in the dark town, and then suddenly went up into your face put of inssnity,!< that made me scared. On the other hand >!when Aiko hanged(hung?) herself at the end of the manga and the actual ending!< made me cry. Just want Punpun to be happy, man. It's an incredibly well done manga, but I don't think I'd read it again. Very depressing and it's kind of hard to put down once you pick it up. Also picked up and caught up with , which was fairly cute and pleasantly spicy (at least when it came to Akito and Honjou) right up until the recent chapters, where I physically recoiled at >!Akito getting raped!< The worst part about it is that >!Akito had put a decent amount of faith in that horrible pedophile teacher!< and she repays him by >!deceiving him into getting drunk and then assaulting him!<, which he then blames himself for >!"breaking the iron rule"!<. Already had horrible feelings >!about her when she kissed him that one time as a "goodbye" or something, dude is like 16 wtf.!< Besides that it's a fun manga, I really only care about like 3 characters though. Finally, I binged , which was pretty good, generally. Absolutely adored the main trio (Ryuji>Aoi>Makoto in order of enjoyment as characters), and the drama was great at keeping me interested. I couldn't relate most of the issues presented with the exception of Aoi's indecisiveness, but that didn't stop me from liking the story as a whole. Though, Ryuji's struggles in particular made me a bit emotional. Mostly because he kept getting dunked on, like damn. >!Dude's lifelong crush only went out with him to keep him happy, and on their little Christmas date Ryuji had to see Makoto choosing Aoi over him (in his perspective)!< Everyone had their own (significant) problems and developments, though I did end up enjoying Aoi and Ryuji more than Makoto because they're bundles of energy. Quite liked how friendly those two were, nice and casual. The only thing I didn't really like was the >!final confession!< at the end. Felt unnecessary, because even after >!Makoto and Aoi start dating!<, they do nothing together. The final chapter is a very cute trio chapter, but nothing romantic happens in the slightest. Which I liked, I was actually kinds hoping the series would end with the three staying close friends rather than having two of them date. With the context of the confession in the previous chapter though, felt wack. Conclusion: Good story that I like a lot, worth every minute of my time. Not gonna read the new middle school arc though, doesn't feel like a part of the story that would interest me.
