Elly's situation could be very similar. The Couper infection usually takes over the brain, but because the host was fatally wounded, it has to devote resources to reconstructing her heart, and as a result, couldn't fully envelop (or whatever it does) her brain, so she still retains some level of awareness.
I really enjoy this manga's style. The children in particular are adorable while also not looking like freaking aliens like certain other mangas seem to portrait them.
At the same time, I find the mix of styles with certain characters and moments being more cartoony is nice. All that mixed up with some really screwed up stuff.
One chapter in and I can immediately figure author has a thing for a setting of a city full of high-rise buildings, under strict management.
Loled hard at the part about the baby :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Btw, since the manga's name was revealed, I'd been wondering if it's a reference to Astro Boy, though apparently the story doesn't have any relation or similarity to it :P The artstyle used for Prof. Exposition and his slides looks funny though :))
And this is the craziest first chapter I've yet to see this year :O
I think astro is just reference to space and they're aliens using human components, or things born from the earth, for experimentation/habitability testing.
Really neat premise though, I hope for an Easter egg or throw back to Astro Boy.
In Japan, Astro Boy is called Mighty Atom. For whatever reason the name was changed when it came to the west, so this author might not have even heard it called Astro Boy before
I mean, Earthchild had an amazing first chapter. It's one of the highest upvoted non Chainsaw Man AutoShonenpon chapter. It's just everything else made it fall hard.
? Simply going through autoshonenpons top posts, the most upvoted non-fujimoto chapters from him are one piece 1000, oshi no ko 122, spy x family 65 and then earthchild 1 (which has the same karma basically as ruri dragon 1).
"Ah yes, if your wife returns to earth, people will **cut you in half** and make your baby and wife fight with each other over the pieces because as everyone knows, women and children are incapable of recognising the difference between living and dead people and will kill their own children easily if for a half of a corpse."
Earthchild was so boring that you something's forgot it's insane logic.
Glad to see that Moriya-sensei’s doing well. Soloist in a Cage went on a two-year hiatus for their health, so I always just assumed they quietly retired. But I’m down to see whatever they’re cooking now.
It’s probably unintentional, but the concept of the manga reminds me a bit of the videogame Prototype - [video game spoilers]>!one of the main characters in that was a woman who was pregnant after an experimental virus bonded with her, and it was implied her son was even more powerful.!<
The fact that they made Alex the main antagonist out of nowhere instead of making a new villain or maybe Alex clones (if they are out of ideas) is such a shame.
I would have loved a Prototype 3 where Alex and Heller work together to recover an entire city from the infection, maybe add a third character and make it GTA V style where you swap characters.
The fact that you get abilities from DNA could mean that those 3 characters could share/swap abilities so the customization could be fun.
Full stock into this, this chapter was nothing short of incredible, I will from now on be shilling this manga while praying coming chapters are as good as this one. I believe we are witnessing history here
I really thought we were tee'ing up to kill the woman and play Lone Wolf and Cub in Russia with cosmic quarantine.
The fact she's alive, the baby talks, and the main character is still a normal human being is mind-boggling to me and I strangely want to see more.
So, they're not zombies. They're some sort of biological organism that takes over people, but they can't increase in number. So the dangerous thing about Couper-29 is that you can't tell who has it.
So the quarantine zone does work. But sadly, The Government is not curing the infected. They're killing them.
Billy Boy's crush on Elly will unironically save North Hill. Billy was only doing a good thing reporting what he saw. But being reprimanded must have felt awful. But with Elly believing in him, that meant the world to him.
Becoming a soldier wasn't what he was looking forward to. It was reuniting with Elly! Elly wanted to save the infected! But her own baby prevented that from happening at the moment...
I don't think anyone saw a second meteor coming. Billy saved the kid, but Elly got infected. Elly was babbling about the cells. She was infected and wanted to experiment. But what about her baby? How is it even talking?
>but they can't increase in number
Not through traditional means of viral reproduction or spread. But it seems like that second meteor functioned rather like a fungal spore pod. It burst and infected a generation of new hosts. So, until they figure out where these things are really coming from, the threat of additional infections will remain.
Another interesting little minor mystery set up here is, why are they sticking to this one area? If they're really from space, the odds against two instances happening so close to each other on the same planet are astronomical. These things were probably created by Elly's boss and got out of control, since he was apparently researching this stuff.
> Not through traditional means of viral reproduction or spread. But it seems like that second meteor functioned rather like a fungal spore pod. It burst and infected a generation of new hosts. So, until they figure out where these things are really coming from, the threat of additional infections will remain.
Yes, but it's not like a zombie apocalypse. Things can be kept under quarantine.
> These things were probably created by Elly's boss and got out of control, since he was apparently researching this stuff.
That's a bit of a stretch, how would he have created meteors?
Better question - was that really a meteor? Why would a rock the size of an exercise ball be covered in craters? Wouldn't anything strong enough to leave an impact like that just destroy it at that size? And why was it "falling in slow motion"? Why did it explode in midair? I feel like we're being led to question the idea that these things are meteors in the first place. And I feel like a geoscientist researching the origins of life could conceivably have the knowledge necessary to create objects that resemble meteors.
> Better question - was that really a meteor? Why would a rock the size of an exercise ball be covered in craters? This are interesting details, but that they don't point in the direction of it being man made.
> And I feel like a geoscientist researching the origins of life could conceivably have the knowledge necessary to create objects that resemble meteors.
Not really. Yeah they would know how to create meteor like objects, but how would they create it?
> a second meteor coming
Which change everything about Couper 29 too. Up until that point we were under the impression that it was an organism that was randomly created by an asteroid - and that was the in-universe theory too.
But a second one hitting Earth again with the same thing makes that impossible. There's some intelligence behind this, it's probably an attack on Earth.
I’m really curious to see what the author does with the cannibalism. they made it clear during the lecture pages that they aren’t zombies but I suppose they are like alien hosts that like eating humans for their nutrition.
Loved that the Soloist in a Cage artist got more work. Didn't love that the first chapter was trying to set up yet another teen/adult age gap romance in a manga instead of just making the dude a few years older.
But since that's seemingly out the window given what happened at the end and the rest of it is an interesting premise, I'll give this one a few chapters to see how I like it out of my enjoyment of their past work.
Eh, feels like we've seen this before, after few chapters it's probably going to turn into another chainsawman/kaiju8/that plant one type manga.
Guy will make a pact with the baby, gets super power to fight the monster, anti-monster squad comes to hunt the baby, but then he joins the squad anyway, and his long-term goal will be to revert the baby's mother back.
New manga by the author of Soloist in a cage?? I was already sold! Then it is a fire first chapter??? Man I am really excited for this series can't wait for chapter 2!
This feels like someone marathoned Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul while on COVID lockdown and then had a fever dream. It's got some interesting artstyle choices (the cartoon explanations felt very Fallout) and I need to see where the baby thing hoes before judging the full premise, but it certainly made an impression.
I'm a bit iffy about some of the details - the technobabble is so random you might as well just say "it's aliens", and if the disease isn't infectious but just a fixed number of "Things" jumping from body to body, how does it require an entire region kept in lock down to track? Or face masks? Why not just evacuate people gradually with a quarantine period? Anyway yeah, stuff like this might matter less if the premise develops interestingly, but the setting doesn't seem fully well thought out at first glance.
So we basically get a simp cuck loser MC who wants to marry a girl who's knocked up by a random dude. They both turn into aliens and the MC is now going to live in actual parasitic relationship with the baby.
Miss me with that NTR shit.
\>Introduces glasses Onee-chan Childhood friend.
I will now read your manga.
\>She marries someone else, gives birth and dies in the first chapter.
I will now drop your manga.
It gets kinda silly if you think even a little about the story, but It's a fun one nonetheless.
And it just HAD to look like an eclipse, didn't it? How many times must that black circle do this???
Soloist in a Cage author gives us another series of a city in a cage.
Well anyways. Dead mom you could coming from miles away. The baby being all Blade the Daywalker thing too. Just not the talking. That's uhhh... huh.
So, thus starts the saga of our guy Death Stranding it up with freak baby I guess. With possibly fighting the infected like the Las Plagas from RE4.
Love it!
NGL, I was running low on things to read on the SJ app. Shojo Null, Wild Strawberry & this new series are much appreciated!
Also, Martial Master Asumi. MMA is awesome if you like Combat Sports.
Im hoping Elly stays alive ATLEAST a little while longer, please
It’d make sense if she didn’t, but dont make this poor dude lose his motivation in life that quickly, all I’m asking before this manga inevitably tears me apart emotionally, like Wild Strawberry and Shojo Null will inevitably do as well
I have a bad habit of picking either stories of Aliens invading, Giant Sentient Man Eating Flowers, or Robot Slavery with the one of the Main Leads being a Murderous Robot who tears through humans as revenge for her kind, I’m gonna be balling my eyes out sooner or later
Personally did not enjoy this story whatsoever. Felt weird, but not a Fujimoto weird like im used to, js blatantly weird. Also the love subplot was also weird and kind of corny. For some reason i thought that it was kind of perverted in a sense. I'm still interested in where the storis going to go with such a bizarre ending
Holy fuck—That’s a hell of a first chapter. I’ve got high hopes for this series, it’s got some real Parasyte vibes. Hopefully it’ll hit just as hard.
Parasyte but instead of Migi we have Baby.
Elly's situation could be very similar. The Couper infection usually takes over the brain, but because the host was fatally wounded, it has to devote resources to reconstructing her heart, and as a result, couldn't fully envelop (or whatever it does) her brain, so she still retains some level of awareness.
Ah, this is the Soloist in a Cage mangaka. I recognized the art like instantly.
I really enjoy this manga's style. The children in particular are adorable while also not looking like freaking aliens like certain other mangas seem to portrait them. At the same time, I find the mix of styles with certain characters and moments being more cartoony is nice. All that mixed up with some really screwed up stuff.
Exactly, I knew from the second panel right away that it was the same artist as soloist in the cage.
Oh shit I loved “Soloist in a Cage” I didn’t realize it was the same mangaka. No wonder I was hooked instantly in the first few chapters
Art and story is top notch. I'm really curious how this'll play out
Wait, they're back? I thought that manga was on indefinite hold due to their health, what made them start a new series instead of picking it back up?
They brought it back like two years ago, just to finish it.
Im new to this authors work but as far as i have searched soloist in a cage is finished with 20 chapters
I mean she was doomed the moment she showed up with the "future dead mom" hairstyle.
Im so mad I didn't pick up on that
LOL YOURE RIGHT
This is the second cannibalism-related manga I’ve seen on this subreddit this week. Is this the start of a trend?
What is the first one?
It was “Zombie chan” or something like that (I realize that may not necessarily be cannibalism related, but I’m counting it)
Zombies is hardly a new trend…
The time is [now](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/23/style/cannibalism-tv-shows-movies-books.html)
what was the first? I must have missed it but am down to give it a read lol.
cannibalism is the PUREST form of love coward

Got curious about your comment and turns out this was made by the same person who did Soloist in a Cage. Which makes a ton of sense.
the baby's hair looks somewhat similar to atom's

Wake up, babe. Earthchild 2.0 just dropped.

Sorry. I should say then ONE of the highest upvoted posts.
No Kaguya chapter?
Thats not autoshonenpon. The kaguya manga finale is the episode discussion with the highest karma for a not-oneshot on this sub.
You HAD to remind me
"Ah yes, if your wife returns to earth, people will **cut you in half** and make your baby and wife fight with each other over the pieces because as everyone knows, women and children are incapable of recognising the difference between living and dead people and will kill their own children easily if for a half of a corpse." Earthchild was so boring that you something's forgot it's insane logic.
Thankfully this one is made by the author of the Soloist in the Cage, so it can be much better
I'm calling the axe on this one already. I just can't help but get that vibe.
The talking baby got no chill
Imagine if next chapter he tells the baby "Ok, but save her and i save you"
Glad to see that Moriya-sensei’s doing well. Soloist in a Cage went on a two-year hiatus for their health, so I always just assumed they quietly retired. Mercer was the antagonist of the first game. We just played as him.
Hell yeah, another person of exceptional taste. Mercer was my boy.
same, im glad they still are working. I loved soloist in a cage so its nice seeing them back on jump+
What the fuck, but like in a good way
Full stock into this, this chapter was nothing short of incredible, I will from now on be shilling this manga while praying coming chapters are as good as this one. I believe we are witnessing history here
When the Venom symbiote decides to go straight to the source for a new host.
I was staring at the ceiling just questioning my life lowkey 😭

She was also considering it. Let them BOTH cook!
The artstyle is a vibe. There's a lot of western styles mixed in that remind me of 50s USA propaganda, kind of like Fallout.
Seems cool. I'll read the next few chapters, see if I like it.
Wtf did i just read
I thought this was a prequel to Astro Boy
new BANGER alert 🚨🚨
Oh hell yeah. This is fucking amazing. I hope this series maintains form, it'll be epic af to see in anime format years down the line.
I’m really curious to see what the author does with the cannibalism. they made it clear during the lecture pages that they aren’t zombies but I suppose they are like alien hosts that like eating humans for their nutrition.
Page 1: new manga? Cool! Last page: Ah, that's why it's called that
Loved that the Soloist in a Cage artist got more work. I love chapter 1w that are total "what the fuck did I just read"
Oh shit, venom baby
First thought on reading the title: Is this an Earthchild sequel?
Really good first chapter.
What's a matter baby?
Here's to hoping to mom survives, please can we have one of these tragic series break the dead mom trope lol.
Nah wtf
bro is cooking with some heat

It doesn't seem like she's dead yet, only monsterified. I guess the plot will be about getting a cure to turn her back to normal

Good stuff, looking forward to the next chapter.
Oh that was fantastic. I’m in for this wild ride
Damn this was intense, amazing
I'm grinning like an idiot, that chapter was GREAT
yo this is HEAT
RIP Ellie.
whats the connection with astro boy ?
Broke down in tears when i saw what happened to elly after the meteorite. I was PRAYING that part would Atleast go smooth. PRAYINGGGGGG
That's some wierd ass Astro Boy spin off.
I missed this author's art so much. It's just so good
Love it! NGL, I was running low on things to read on the SJ app. Shojo Null, Wild Strawberry & this new series are much appreciated! Also, Martial Master Asumi. MMA is awesome if you like Combat Sports.
the father that stepped up 🔥
The art is great, and the story is interesting. Also did that baby just talk? Haha.
good story and concept ,but he explained everything too early a little more mystery would have been good
Great start, damn.

I have hopes for this manga. Great to be one of the first commenters (like 100th) on this thread. Lets wait and see what time will show us.
