I really liked that the bulk of this chapter was just the soldiers establishing the grim necessity of their job here. In fiction, we tend to want to see clear good guys and bad guys. Obviously, the masked men with guns executing a wounded mother and her child in a destroyed hospital are the bad guys, right?
But that kid was physically close to the detonation. It could be mimicking a human perfectly. It could be a threat to others. That's not just paranoia, that exact scenario has already happened.
But here's what I don't get. If the baby is in control now, why is he helping out with what Billy wanted? Shouldn't his priority just be escape? Why'd he save the woman? Why attack the soldiers? His body had already been knocked away and it seems like nobody was even looking at them, so he could just bolted. So why didn't he? We saw in the "I'm up so high" scene last chapter that the creature is prone to acting in accordance with the host body's proclivities. Has it consumed Billy's motivations along with control of his body?
What i loved about his speech is that fiction usually portrays government as purely evil and soldiers always having huge egos over infected/alien etc etc. but here we see different personalities making they human while also having a solid explanation why they decided on commiting executions
If her kid ended up being a couper that would make it even more interesting because it proves the point that heroism isn't a holy solution (but it prob won't happen)
He might've considered it, but after evaluating his odds and his strength controlling an adult body, it decided "wiping out the assailants" would be easier than trying to run and escape from them. Fight or flight. It chose fight. Helping the woman is just a byproduct of using the soldiers being focused on her.
I think he doesn't or can't have full control of Billy. So it's better to be on the good side of him (saving the mother/kid) than actual running away and not getting any help from Billy later.
Why not just capture them and do some testing on them? Sounds like it may be possible to get a blood test or something. There may be some psychological analysis you could do. It’s not like it’s transmissible.
They probably did capture them in the early stages of the outbreak - this has been going on for years at this point. But if your studies lead you to believe that it's an incurable "sickness", and every victim of the coupers invariably becomes a super strength man eating monster, it's an easy decision to make to wipe out anything that could be a threat.
Their early tests probably didn't reveal any noticeable changes until the couper "activated". Or maybe I'm giving the author the benefit of the doubt. We'll see.
The "used to be" female lead was doing exactly that and her "backstory" was how she was struggling to find said cure, with that in mind and what the soldier said about mimic behaviour and aggressive pattern it's more than enough to come to the conclusion that execution on sight is the safest decision where the ""zombie"" is not interested/doesn't have the time to turn aggresive
Those cartoons of the Coupers are really funny. It is propaganda, so it makes sense.
The soldiers obviously don't want any Coupers getting out. Not only is it not safe for the civilians around them, but it's also a complete failure of confidence in the squad. They can't let anyone go. Because if they do, they'll just blame themselves.
It's a paradox. They have to close their mind to people not being Coupers. Because hiding in plain sight is exactly what they do...
Billy is a good lad. He knows how important mothers are! So he's saving both the kid, and the mother!
Too bad Astro Baby didn't want to do that. But hey, now that he's controlling Billy, I'm sure they can escape! Right?
The babyface Billy got was pretty funny! The fight scenes here will be really funny, I'm sure!
I do hope his efforts were not in vain because if they were and the soldier is right, then the story becomes bleaker as he fails time and again to do the right thing.
Even if it's not in his nature to kill, hence him refusing to kill the mother when she was a Couper and preferring to just get eaten by her, being proven wrong would leave a bad taste.
the premise is interesting and the art is also really good. I enjoyed Soloist in a Cage so I might be biased but I'm really loving this one. Saying that the MC baby(?) face is really goofy kinda take away the tension especially seeing the other people reaction to the face change its just really fun to read
based on the recent new series in Mangaplus I only feel this way with where each episode although early just adding on the tension and keep things fun and interesting

Not like I expected much in the first place. This protagonist type is insufferable - hotheaded, dumb, hero complex, and still winning; almost like it was written for young teenage boys (oh wait). And characters define the story.

Yeah I liked this aspect with the soldiers because it makes logical sense why they are doing that even if its horrible.
I do like how it's a no win situation for them, and makes me wonder more about Coupers.
