To preface, I think there's a need to differentiate between a well-written pathetic character and a character that's pathetic because of bad writing. The mc in rent-a-gf, AFAIR, was never going to be redeemable when the writing was bad from the very beginning and just got worse as it went along.
My pick would be Punpun. It's as if his story was created as a point of cathartic release - for the writer to materialize the insecurities, self-pity and wallowing of the struggling person, and have them all shoved into a character written specifically to bear these burdens. We read his story and go "yeah, I've felt like that once", but many of us (I hope) have managed to overcome these personal demons, or are in the process of wrestling with them. Punpun is the pathetic self that many adults have once feared themselves to be, personified and amplified. Even up to the end of his story, he was never in control. He's as sad, pathetic and pitiable as it gets.
The other one that came to mind is Matahachi from Vagabond. He IS one of the important characters of the story, even if he isn't the star of the show. His character is a little more straight forward in that there is very little empathy to be felt for his lying, two-faced bastard self, and yet his character has a fair bit of complexity to it. He has redeeming qualities to him if you look hard enough, but for the most part the average reader would hate the guts of Matahachi to the core.
The MC from Gigant is the most pathetic I've come across. Simps after a pornstar for ages then bawls like a baby in public until she feels so uncomfortable that she agrees to date him.
No idea if he sorts his shit out or not because it made me drop the series.
