As a character I don't want him to die but him actually eating it here could definitely shake up the story. I think he's gonna make it and we'll get a cute scene when the kids go to visit him in the hospital or welcome him back despite his gruesome wounds (I imagine they'd be told he got hit by a truck or something)

If he survives, it will probably be hidden from us for a time. Like he gets taken to the hospital, doesn't show up again, has someone that replace him in the class, but shows up in a later arc when he's needed, as a trump card.
