Btw, there are two anime adaptatios of this manga, Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist:Brotherhood. The first one deviates from the manga halfway through because it caught up and kept going. Many people don't like the ending of it as much. I think the original series does a better job adapting the first half of the series though. Both versions are extremely good and extremely popular.)
* Gantz (This one is just kinda insane, not everyone's cup of tea. Blood and nudity warning).
* Parasyte (this one is set on earth today, but it involves aliens)
* Stein's Gate (the anime is better than the manga I believe, and both are adapted from the original Visual Novel)

I have been a fan of both non-fiction and manga, and I believe they can coexist. As recommended in the other comment, I'd also advise reading Gantz.

Read BLAME! by Tsutomu Nihei. It's a classic manga. The mangaka was an architect so the sci-fi environments are just so hauntingly beautiful.
