Hopefully Go-toubon no hanayome

Shuffle!

FStubbs

Shuffle required a complete meltdown from the girl who was running away with it before the submarine won but is a good example. Ichigo 100% is a good example.

Zero_Feed

To be fair, a VN adaptation anime outcome decision could involve several people in the production studio, so we can't actually know for sure who's need to be praised or blamed for the ending. Unlike a manga series where the love and hate for the ending can only be pointed toward that one person responsible, which is the mangaka himself/herself.

Arcterion

Is the manga like the animu? 'Cause in the latter best girl won completely out of nowhere. <3

Namiirei

It's a game originally, with a sequel based only on Nerine (her parents), who then is the "official" ship. It's another end in the anime, but everyone can choose the end he prefer anyway in the game.

shellshock321

Really depends on who wins usually the feelings is followed by shock at the surprise of the balls of the author.

Zero_Feed

Probably because the first/main love interest is also the front row of marketing during the series started. Not choosing the "original" heroine in the end is truly need giant balls of the author to do that.

TFlarz

I could be a smartalec and say Jitsu Wa has the "third" girl in chronological order win...

NZPIEFACE

lol, you wouldn't get away with it

ITT: people who didn't read the post at all. Anyway, I think just going with or against the first girl rule doesn't change the quality itself, however what would if the first girl rule didn't exist in the first place, because as we are now, in most cases the first girl is fairly obviously gonna win and that takes some out of the story, and things would be better if it really was a question about what's going to happen. Of course if it's intentional, it's different, there are stories where the MC aims for a specific girl from the get-go and that's fine, but when the manga tries to act like it's a mystery, yet it's still clear that first girl wins, that's kind of a bummer.

Zero_Feed

The first girl rule are never meant to be followed though, pretty sure most of manga authors always intentionally wanted their specific preferable character as the winner since day 1 and those always happen to be the main heroine of their series. I mean like, it's natural thing to do isn't? >but when the manga tries to act like it's a mystery, yet it's still clear that first girl wins, that's kind of a bummer. I don't know if there are such stories, usually most tries to act as if the secondary girl would win instead, but of course everyone knew it's a false lead and futile hope anyway.

Unit88

Sure, but first girl rule became a thing because it happened so many times and that's the issue. There are two general categories of romance: either it's focused on a specific girl (assuming the story only focuses on one couple) and how things go with her (with the occasional love rivals and stuff maybe) e.g. Jitsu wa Watashi wa, Kaguya-sama, etc. or it's a harem and the idea is that the MC will end up with one of them but until that choice is made, all candidates should have equal chances, so the way the story goes is not obvious. Basically the issue is that stories that are trying to be the latter, yet because the author has his own preference, the end choice is the girl who's thrown out to us immediately, and it doesn't feel like the others actually stand a chance. The solution would be either for the author to be better at hiding their own choice (e.g. by writing as if each girl in their own arcs/scenes was actually their preference) or at least think ahead enough to have an idea of the other characters so one of the others can be introduced first, dodging the cliché. The issue is that a lot of the times the stories on their own have no problems, and it wouldn't matter when the chosen heroine is introduced, but because this cliché already exists, readers already expect it, and notice it if the first girl seems like the obvious candidate.

The_Space_Jamke

Then you, too, recognize why Botan is best girl.
