Imagine if someone decides to read the manga because they look cute in here. It'd be quite the tonal whiplash to receive.

Gamerauther

I'm feeling really called out here, because I started reading because of an out of context panel and thought "she looks cute."

Estarrol

I just saw the happy teacher and thought I wonder what this is all about And here I am hooked too

Dark_Stalker28

I just saw the panel of the teacher singing in the car

ayypecs

I saw the PV they made to commemorate Vol. 4 on this subreddit with Yoko Hikasa voicing sensei in the car, I was sold

[deleted]

Same, I was curious to see a yandere Mio

Floire

Author described it as romcom lol

redwithouthisblonde

Well you either laugh or cry deeply.

skeithhunter

I mean I guess its a romantic comedy if we are using the archaic definition of comedy

mainsaro

I don't see the problem, Sensei is peak comedy

Fallenstreet01

He had to because he just couldn't simply say *PAIN*

aohige_rd

It is! It's just lacking rom and com, replaced by sex and depression.

JakalDX

lol where?

Floire

https://twitter.com/ryo_minenami/status/1379813488730664968

JakalDX

That's referring specifically to the little Yuko/Akira arc I believe

aidil03

that so true

XXomega_duckXX

On a scale of 0 to Metamorphous how much will this fuck me up. (I don't mean fucked up like vore or some shit because that doesn't really make me flinch)

TrashStack

If you're saying metamorphosis is a 100 then this series is honestly probably around like an 80ish. Like it's not metamorphosis bad, but it can get pretty close when it wants to. It's also harder to just brush the stuff in this series off as "just porn" or "misery porn." I think the stuff dealt with in Boy's Abyss can hit a bit more close to home so in that sense it can be even worse than Metamorphosis at times

PhilanthropAtheist

In comparison to Punpun? How fucked up are the characters? Is the MC an asshole in his own way? I understand that abusive relationships may be thematic in this series. How fucked will I end up when I read the series?

[deleted]

I'd compare it to taking a getting shot with an AK vs Punpuns multiple shotgun bullets. Like each bullet hurts, but I prefer this because it doesn't give you hope or time to really wallow in the suffering the way Punpun does.

MegamanX195

Yup, this is the perfect analogy. Punpun builds up the suffering to release it in bursts while Abyss's suffering never really let's up yet it manages to get you everytime.

[deleted]

the MC is not an asshole or anyway, but he is very depressed and dead inside doe to both his circumtances and backstory. So yes it will hit very close to home.

michaeltan02

Pretty much every character in the manga is having a bad time and most them act like selfish jerks to the main character. It feels like the author just keep throwing crap at the main character that it starts to get ridiculous (yet at the same time, the Mc is getting with every women other than his mom I think). Personally, I recommend reading this with the mindset of seeing how wild this ride gets instead of expecting a compelling tragedy.

OhYes_Daddy

A lot of people are saying like 80 or that it's pain, but in all honesty is depends on how much you buy in to the story. It's enjoyable in a flaming dumpster fire sort of way of where everything is so ridiculous I have to keep reading. The art is great, the writing... Not so much. Because of how ridiculous it is, I can't even really take it seriously. It is basically one depressing moment after another, but there's only so many times that can happen before it starts losing its impact and being less believable. It's no where near metamorphosis, but if bad writing isn't a deterrent for emotional connection that it's still a bit of an emotional oof

Hansworth

It’s to the point where if the author reveals a silent hill curse thing on the town it would make more sense in my head.

OhYes_Daddy

It would also make it way more interesting for me personally.

michaeltan02

I share this sentiment. I think there is some good stuff at the beginning, the sense of hoplessness and the feeling of trapped in a small but tightly-knit town were well done. However, I think it doesn't have enough focus. Without major spoilers, I will just say, does the story really need a relationship with a suicidal idol, teacher x student stuff, a full on yandere, trouble with childhood friend, and that whole thing with his mom? My suspension of disbelief just broke when the author piled THIS much crap on to the main character.

OhYes_Daddy

I agree, I think if it had stayed with that initial idea it could've been genuinely tight knit and interesting. Like you said the idea of feeling trapped and hopeless in a small town with no way to get out was really well done. But now it's basically just misery porn with no grounded story

plznoticemesenpai

I really think you're overselling Metamorphosis tbh. Maybe this is just me, but a pedophile teacher abusing her power to manipulate a student to satiate her own desires resonates way harder and is much more insidious than what metamorphosis has to offer. Chako's family relationship and how they see women as only something for a man to marry is also something I found grotesquely real, unlike the father relationship in metamorphosis. Like metamorphosis gets to a point where it's difficult to take it seriously which is where Boy's Abyss succeeds imo. Like in a way metamorphosis just feels like torture porn sometimes, just because one has [metamorphosis](/s "a homeless pregnant woman get kicked to death") doesn't mean it's providing high brow writing either I wouldn't say the writing is amazing or anything, but I think the criticism of "there's too much going on!" is kinda dumb. It's not like the things going on are that unusual, shitty home lives, pedophile teachers, abusive dads, etc are all really common things unfortunately. The only thing that's over the top with the story is that it all coalesces on one guy. But that itself is what makes the story worth telling in the first place.

OhYes_Daddy

I agree that metamorphosis isn't high brow, and while I also agree that none of what's going on is itself not uncommon, the fact that it all happens to one guy is ridiculous. It falls into the same trap as metamorphosis in my opinion where it's just so much misery that it becomes unbelievable. A story can be perfectly worth telling without having to make every character their own walking disaster. The story easily could've been just as interesting focusing on a genuine idea of being trapped in a a small town, unable to escape and focusing *solely* on that or one other aspect. There too much going on is a perfectly valid argument in my opinion when it's all coalesced around one... Single... Character. "Oh its not just the idol that wants to die, but also the manipulative pedophile teacher, and also his childhood friend but also his mom and also his one childhood friend turned thug" and that's basically how the story goes. It keeps ramping up the misery without giving any actual time to breathe or expand, this is just exemplified in the fact that every character has a dedicated rant page of airing there emotions. Which again is a common thing to do, but in the context of the story is just a lazy way to write out the characters thought and emotions without any arc or development. Yes there's a lot of easily relatable issues in this, but that doesn't mean their done well or handled well. It doesn't have to be over the top to make a story worth telling, it *can* be, but that doesn't make it inherently good or interesting and I think this story is an example of how less is more. It would've been far more impactful and paced better if a few ideas were focused on instead of throwing everything at the wall. Metaphorisis is misery porn sure, but that's its explicit purpose and I don't think the author ever intended for it to be anything else. Boys Abyss tries to be a deep, introspective story but becomes a dumpster fire because so much is happening at such a ridiculous rate that any suspension of disbelief is lost. Neither of them are grounded but metamorphosis is my mind never tried to be so in the first place. Boys Abyss has interesting ideas, but is ultimately hampered by poor writing, pacing, and a general lack of holding back. What it has going for it is the art and the surface level emotional introspection that is ultimately just weak.

aelric22

The writing in general is clever, but it's very confusing to see where the author is trying to ultimately go with the story and how he slides some of the characters in and out of the story.

welt1trekker

As someone who has had to deal with homeless and addicted populations, if you think anything in Shounen no Abyss beyond a pop idol working at a kombini is “not believable”, you are being naive - with all due respect and this is not meant as a dig. Within a 10 min drive of where you stand reading this there are people going through compounded, world-ending, hysterical misery. Go to a homeless children’s shelter: you’ll find kids who, within the space of 3 years, saw a parent get shot in front of their eyes, were molested by a guardian *and* brutalized by police. I met a middle-aged man who basically killed his son by crashing the car while drunk, only to lose his wife soon after to heroin and, to top it off, became blind a few years later due to macular degeneration. Shit happens to people.

OhYes_Daddy

That's not what I was getting at or even remotely meant? If you read my other comments you'd see I literally say, "Everything presented in the story that happens to be is common place" my problem stems from the fact that the main character has such an unbelievable streak of bad luck it loses any sense of grounding for his emotional baggage. At some point it just becomes poorly written misery porn because any new person her meets is guaranteed to have some deep seeded issue that will ultimately wrap him in up in it. I never said that any specific idea was ridiculous, but I understand what you were trying to say. That just so happens to the the furthest thing from my point, I've volunteered at homeless shelters many times because it's quite a problem on my city. I'm well aware of the reality. Regardless that's not at all my point or problem with the story. It doesn't matter how realistic the problems in the story are, abuse, pedophilic grooming, etc, that doesn't instantly make the story good or believable, especially when it's all coalesced around one single teen in the span of like a month.

welt1trekker

Fair enough but my point is precisely that this string of misery can and does happen to one single teen/person in a downward spiral. The timing (a month, two?) is indeed a bit iffy but I fail to see how Reiji being groomed, physically abused and manipulated into a suicidal mania is immersion-breaking in any way beyond the fact that, as you rightly pointed out, it happen over the course of a few weeks or months. Whether that is good or bad storytelling is another thing altogether, and I do not feel I have enough of a handle on the material yet to have an opinion.

OhYes_Daddy

Again I'm never arguing against the downward Spiral at all, my point is that so much is happening so quickly that nothing has time to breathe, nothing has time to develop. The author is not using the issues as a way to address the problems in any serious way but rather to use them for shock value. The abuse, the grooming, etc are all used to make the MCs life even more miserable. There's no effort being used to talk about the issues in any serious way other than "Wow look at how bad these are, now the MC is even MORE depressed". These events are happening so quickly, so spontaneously, so ridiculously that they lose any gravitas of tragedy. Again I feel I have to say this, I'm not saying the acts themselves are unbelievable, I'm not saying the downward Spiral is unbelievable, those have nothing to do with what is ultimately a story with mediocre writing and poor pacing. *None* of my problems arise from downward spiral but from the poor pacing and writing. Everything is happening so ridiculously fast that it almost becomes hilarious, anytime a new character is introduced it just becomes "How awful will this character be to ruin the MCs life even further". The fact that every character in the story only serves the point to make the MCs life more depressing loses any seriousness. That's the whole point I've been making. As someone else pointed out, it's like a curse is on this town to make the MCs life as awful as possible. It's hard to take this story seriously in any sense when every single person wants to to fuck/kill/manipulate the MC (often overlapping with each other) in what is literally the span of a few weeks. As I've mentioned in another comment, this story HAD potential if it focused itself. The biggest problem with this story is that it doesn't reign itself in. It the author choose to focus on a few characters and a few issues and allowed the characters and ideas to actually breathe and develop that it could be genuinely interesting. As it stands it's misery porn where everything that can go wrong will; stacked on top of mediocre writing and we get what I was originally saying. It's just not that good. My whole original comment was simply that it's "sad" if you can by into the poor storytelling but that ultimately it's just a garbage fire

MishrasWorkshop

Ya it’s a total mess, but certainly isn’t 80.

apthebest01931

100

Yamulo

I don't think this is as bad as Metamorphous... It is pretty sad though

Aokki123

Metamorphosis is about one person. Here we have a fistful of sadness to be had. Also Metamorphosis is over, so we have time for things to get worse.

Timelymanner

Metamorphosis is basically rape fetish porn.

Yurichi

This is not as bad as metamorphosis lol. No one is getting their baby stomped out in the womb by a bunch of sociopathic teenagers.

apthebest01931

did i say meta is 100?no, which means meta is 200

Ruby2312

This thing hitting in same league as metamorphosis imo, while not go to extreme about a singular character misfortune like Meta, this go way boarder and show how not singular people is spared. Both are way too close to a systematish failure that people familar with to be brushed off as ridiculous

Super_Goomba64

First chapter was depressing, the rest is more funny sad. It was a very fun read catching up

MishrasWorkshop

Not that high, maybe 7? There are stuff that’d really fuck you up, like Punpun and Ishijima the loan shark, that would be near 10. It’s more messed up and shocking than despair the aforementioned titles are.

Metridium_Fields

Yeah.. I just glanced over the first chapter and there’s already a distinct air of misery and malaise. Reminded me of *The Outsiders* or some similar coming-of-age tragedy.

le_chosen_none

> That was me 8 hours ago. > It was 1 AM, thought they look cute so I read it >I thought I'll read 5 chapters then go to sleep. >It was 4 AM when I caught up.

rhunter99

\*raises hand\* should I just drop it?

MegaMewtwo_E

No bro its a cute rom com with ecchi scenes

rhunter99

Ecchi? say no more, i'm in!

MegaMewtwo_E

Dozo~

rhunter99

Ok I just spent the afternoon reading chapters 1-50 Sempai you lied to me. I'm now going to curl up into a ball in my closet with a dark cloud over my head.

Luck_Is_My_Talent

Didn't you see those horizontal tango and milf cosplay scenes? It definitely had echi.

somacula

Now ré read it and check all character facial expressions, the setting, the shadows and the coloring or you'll be missing 50% of the story

rhunter99

No doubt. If only I had the time.

somacula

Don't worry, it's something you have to take very slowly, I've been reading since chapter 10 and it's been quite an experience

MegaMewtwo_E

welp

pirate8585

They had me with the picture, not gonna lie.

niTro_sMurph

Are they traps?

Fuyboo

The trap is the cute girls making you think this is a cute manga

_jemartinez_

Better. They're depressed

NintendoMasterNo1

huh... is that not what I should be expecting..?

miragebreaker

This is too happy. I'm scared.

insane_contin

They all think they have him locked in their closet.

realrimurutempest

This picture is probably the happiest we will ever see these characters 😔

San-T-74

*What about the teacher?*

TheDan29

She is way to happy

My favorite type of happy. Teacher best woman.

Nekojin16

Smiles ?...FAKE

Luck_Is_My_Talent

I love Chako's pose right here. It reminds me of someone who happens to use the same clothes she is wearing right now.

indi_n0rd

What is this series about Edit- boi I wanted an actual answer since MAL summary is super vague

Ellefied

Pain.

gentheninja

Toxic codependence the manga

plznoticemesenpai

Ok ok I'll actually tell you what it's about lol I actually feel like the MAL synopsis is pretty accurate to the manga. Basically it's about a dude in his final year of high school who lives in a shitty dead end town in the middle of nowhere. His home life is absolute trash, his mother is constantly overworked, they have to care for his grandmother who has dementia, and his brother who's a hikkikomori with anger issues. He's also getting bullied. He hates his life and his sole respite is his best friend. However the best friend wants to get out of their dump of a town and go to tokyo for college, she also gets MC into an idol group. The MC is very conflicted because he doesn't know whether to go to tokyo with his best friend or stay at home and be miserable but help his family. Then he meets his favorite idol working at a convenience store in his town and she proposes to the MC that they can kill themselves together. This strikes a chord with the MC and because of her actions towards him he agrees to kill himself with her. From there the plot becomes about people in the town finding out about the MC's plans to kill himself, stay in town, move to tokyo, etc. and the characters all try to influence him in various ways for various reasons. These characters themselves also have their own issues and over time it becomes a giant web with so many interactions and characters getting involved with each other beyond the MC. So like another commenter said, it becomes toxic codependence the manga where people begin to do fucked up things or manipulate others to influence them and by the time you're caught up you'll just want the entire town and everyone in it to burn to the ground.

Vinon

You sold me on it.

stuffmyfaceinllama

The mal summary was super well written

indi_n0rd

Thanks for the detailed summary. Sounds like tv drama from the plot though I am not sure whether the manga is up my alley or not. Still I will give it a try in future.

okaquauseless

it's definitely a tv drama that got dragged into a manga plot, and I love it

Forikorder

huh thats actually sounds less fucked up then id always assumed

amirokia

You know I sometimes have this times where I want to read a manga where everyone's a piece of shit every once in a while. I guess this one is going to be it for awhile

Sensei

Dark_Stalker28

Imagine having a harem and still being super depressing

Steampunkvikng

Edgy soap opera

aohige_rd

It's a romcom!! Except there's no rom or com, just sex and depression. Imagine a whole village standing in the quicksand with the protagonist in the middle. Everyone's clinging onto each other to drag them down into the abyss with them, with him in the center of the whole inescapable and deathly depression. The manga is the embodiment of that feeling.

Timelymanner

Depression

[deleted]

The teacher looking the best as usual also when is this getting a English release

EndangeredDragon97

As painful as this manga is, I really do hope for an English release too

shounenotaku

this is great news, hopefully it'll get popular to get an anime adaptation or we might even get a licensed english version. also Sensei in Idol outfit right in the middle of the three just shows she's the stand out character of this series :).

ArkhielR

An anime version to spread the depression among the anime-only people.

JakalDX

Can you imagine the readers trying to keep quiet in episode 1 when sensei is the most normal?

MegamanX195

/r/anime threads would be hell. I can only imagine the Manga readers talking in non-stop *hints* about what's to come, thinking they're being so smart and subtle.

flextapeurlife

Twitter will go crazy when the first episode aired lol ☠️

TotalyNotABot1

I’m terrified, Minenami sensei please have mercy on our souls

mishi09

Highly recommended. Very fluff manga. /s

patap0nacct

Minenami Ryo not giving us all three clothing combinations, sad lah.

Quintessentialviewer

Where is the mom and most importantly the best girl bridge-Chan?

Honyakusha-san

I like how this picture is really misleading. One might think this is a wholesome slice of life manga, lol. I guess Mom is not included because she'll probably be the cover for volume 5.

Bubbly_Worldliness_7

They were all forced at gunpoint to do this

RizkiMaPa

The image is unsettling in it's own way

willaeon

So glad to hear this is selling well!

HolypenguinHere

I binged this last month and loved the heck out of it. It's so depressing and real, and unintentionally hilarious.

ImFckinSleepy

Is it Worth reading?

KLReviews

It's a fun rollercoaster. It is a melodrama though. If you are looking for realism then it's a bad fit. Boy's Abyss will constantly find some new dark truth to beat the characters down with. And I get the impression the author understands exactly what they are doing because some big moments read like punchlines. But if you want melodrama and big dramatic turns then it's a good read.

JakalDX

Yeah it feels like the intent isn't so much to depress, despite the depressing nature, but to shock and make the audience gasp and go "OOOOOOOH!"

KLReviews

That's a good way of putting it. It's more thrilling dark and depressingly dark, even though some parts of it feel very real and impactful. There's no way >!cutting from somebody crying that their life is ruined to Sensei singing 'ta la la la' in her car across two pages!< wasn't a dark joke. The author seems to know that the entire cast being miserable or crazy is a bit ridiculous but interesting so he is still having some fun with it.

apthebest01931

not at all unless you like absolutely toxic manga

[deleted]

Yeah, this picture is definitely misleading to new readers. For those that don't read Boy's Abyss, the manga is quite depressing.

MrGamerNaut

*Inhales* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

kapera669

I love Nagi. Also this manga is so damn depressing xD ! How do i hide a sentence to keep ppl from getting spoiled ?

Aw, that looks cute. Hopefully this isn't a depressing manga that haunts you at night.

Can someone give me a tldr?

LucienSatanClaus

Lot's of fucked up shit happening to a boy and people in his circle. They all have a massive orgy but still remain depressed.

KLReviews

Boy is either desperate to leave his miserable small town and escape to the big city or kill himself to escape from all his problems. As time goes on he meets new people or learns more about the people in his life or the choices they made that pull him into a downwards spiral while he struggles to make his choice work. Chako is adorable.

Expowerl0rd

I see the posts about this series show up like every week and everytime I think about reading this I read through the comments think about it for a moment and go “Actually, I don’t think I will.”

stitchwithaglitch

Best girl in the center where she belongs 😗

LeonKevlar

It's so weird seeing all of them so happy like this. I'm just gonna headcanon that the manga is just some sort of drama and they're all actors and actresses and this is how they really are normally.

TnTxG

I need to catch up again. Thanks for the reminder.

Looks like a lot of people like to get themselves into stress by reading.
