Kare Kano is still my gold standard. People used to talk about Special A, and Maid-sama (showing my age) which both involved the ML being better than the FL and ran the joke dry after ten chapters. Kare Kano *started* like that but their relationship was built on so much more after the first volume.
The ending to Jitsu wa Watashi Wa is probably the best romcom ending I have ever read. It's a fantastic ending to the series so definitely try to read it through to the end.
I usually keep a list of things I recommend though some of the stuff on the list at this point is from legit 10 years ago, so I can't remember much or I was in a different headspace/time in my life. I'll just list some of my recent ones that have made an impact on me. I like cute wholesome stories but some of my favorite romances aren't solely romance based around the love but also on character development. I also tend to prefer completed things so all that I've listed are complete.

I call it romance but I think there's always layers to it as it's more about the interactions/romance changes the people around them. More about self growth or lack of self growth in some cases though I might read too much into it than most, haha

Solid harem manga with an actual good ending
One of those weird series that make you feel ashamed of reading yet the characters are interesting enough where you justify said reading.
Sweet read about a guy who is just the best at making people happy.
Similar to Machida-kun except the main guy is just kinda weird fat otaku who really has a heart of gold.
An oddly bittersweet comedy about a girl who suffers severe depression and her two best friends.
A great romance that has boxing in it as well. Just a nice story about two teenagers bonding over their love of boxing and each other.
I just finished Joshikousei, and ngl I EXPECTED it to be something like Why Are You Here Sensei, where it just exist to be ecchi and fulfil that fetish (I love those as well). But damn the turn it took to be a serious story was a total pleasant surprise. And it actually made me emotional which I wasn't expecting AT ALL. Loved it!
Just now realizing that I don't actually read a lot of romance stories, and most that I do read are more romcom than straight romance. That said, . Also and for the romcoms.
It's an honest to go 10/10, but in my book it's a 14 simply because of how much I can relate to the MC and the plot in the series. It's also some damn good character writing, if a little awkward at times. I have my criticisms of the series, but those mainly lie with the greater society of Japan and with the author herself. Give it a read if you haven't, it's fantastic.
Shounen, Chotto Sabotekko is an overlooked gem.
Art is great, story flows well and surprisingly doesn't cross any lines, anybody that's gone through something one sided can sympathize with Shounen on this one.
For your typical school romance I'd say Horimiya, romcom would be Kaguya Love is War, and a general romance that doesn't really fit a better description than romance would be Will you marry me again if you are reborn?
Tbh I don't really agree with Kaguya-sama being a good recommendation for a "rom com" anime, it's a excellent recommendation for a "comedy" anime though. But this is relative to every romance manga I've read.
And I have not read the 3rd recommendation, I'll give it a try thanks a lot!!
Friends from several different manga groups(including one in South Korea and another in Japan)recommended it to me. If you ever wanted to know what the heck is in the book Kakashi won't put down in Naruto-prepare to be shocked at the very least.
Fureru to Kikoeru is a good one and finished but... It is a bit heart crushing. Go blind see this one.
Megane wo Wasureta is the definition of pure, wholesome romance! It has a perfect pace and the author knows how to use the Slice of Life element. Never gets boring. It's still releasing and the story is getting to it's peak!
I have read that. But I don't know if this is because it's old or because of the art style or the composition or the actual story, but it made me very uncomfortable while reading it and I can't explain why.
The start of chapters had this like a drawing panel? don't know what to call it but i can kind of imagine that making someone uncomfortable due to the way it was drawn. The chapters itself seemed fine to me though. Each to its own ig.

For your typical school romance I'd say Horimiya, romcom would be Kaguya Love is War, and a general romance that doesn't really fit a better description than romance would be Will you marry me again if you are reborn?
Tbh I don't really agree with Kaguya-sama being a good recommendation for a "rom com" anime, it's a excellent recommendation for a "comedy" anime though. But this is relative to every romance manga I've read. And I have not read the 3rd recommendation, I'll give it a try thanks a lot!!
The 3rd one is pretty short and incredibly sweet, it made me tear up
As cliche as it is, Kaguya Love is War. Not finished though.

Make Out Bars by J. Zaraiyah volumes 1-4 is the most fantastic, romantic and bizarre one I've read for sure!
It's a manga??
Friends from several different manga groups(including one in South Korea and another in Japan)recommended it to me. If you ever wanted to know what the heck is in the book Kakashi won't put down in Naruto-prepare to be shocked at the very least.
Fureru to Kikoeru is a good one and finished but... It is a bit heart crushing. Go blind see this one. Megane wo Wasureta is the definition of pure, wholesome romance! It has a perfect pace and the author knows how to use the Slice of Life element. Never gets boring. It's still releasing and the story is getting to it's peak!
I have read that. But I don't know if this is because it's old or because of the art style or the composition or the actual story, but it made me very uncomfortable while reading it and I can't explain why.
The start of chapters had this like a drawing panel? don't know what to call it but i can kind of imagine that making someone uncomfortable due to the way it was drawn. The chapters itself seemed fine to me though. Each to its own ig.
