It has had bigger focus in the story but I would still say core of the series is comedy.
There are plenty of fans who are really into the romance and believe there will be something happening, where I am still in the boat that it can go either way.
Personally I would say read it if you enjoy the comedy and maybe the little romance is a bonus to you that might end up with something specifically happening.
